I was detained by Indonesian Police for being with an Indonesian woman. Kuta, Lombok.

  • Today walking around Kuta, Lombok, I talk to Gary who with his wife spends half the year living in Lombok. We discuss the reasons why Gary prefers living here and also chat about how some of us seem to have an innate need to wander or constantly be on the move.
I tell the story of a night on one of my first trips to Indonesia when I joined a local woman at her home after a night at a bar on the backpacker street Jalan Jaksa. After a short time chatting inside her apartment local police officers arrive to inform me I was in trouble as I wasn’t allowed to be inside an Indonesian woman’s home.
I also meet the wife of a local fisherman who explains a little of her life in the fishing village of Kuta, where she comes from, and why her English is so good.
A great walk around Kuta, Lombok.

My experience in Bali with my future wife at the time (now married)
This was 10 years ago. We had decided to get married and I went to her father and the head of our village to ask his permission to marry. Happily for me, they agreed and we made plans to marry on my next trip back. My future wife already had a house, so i came to stay there while we made wedding plans. Things were going well for a couple of days and then we had a load of police turn up and threatened to take me to jail for living together out of wedlock. Of course, they were trying to get a large cash payment to make the problem go away.
The system here is that whoever informs on this kind of thing gets a percentage of the bribe payed to the police, its like a business almost for them. But unfortunately for the local police and the informant we had the approval from the village. We told them to get off our land and find someone else to harass for easy money.
I fully understand the intentions behind the law and agree with it. it's just unfortunate that it gets manipulated sometimes to extort money from foreigners.
I do love Indonesia and the vast majority of the people, but there are a few that let jealousy and greed consume them.

Selemat Malam, Beautiful Sasak woman with child, so gentle & relaxed. Scary story about being trapped by late night escapade. Traveling is in my blood, as a "army brat" growing up in the US with many different nationalities. It has helped me tremendously traveling solo, especially on buses in Indonesia. Once stayed with a Chinese man I met at a bus station in Madura, who took me traveling in Java to stay with his family. We didn't have an intimate relationship & think as outsiders, we just 'clicked'. Traveling alone & going back to your room can be lonely. Where else can u just show up and be invited immediately to stay with people?

It is very interesting how Westerners don't understand the mentality of the locals. Locals are not calm or relaxed they were raised in a culture and system which is very oppressive for the regular person. As a coping mechanism they lower their expectations and slow their life. As an example stop giving your woman money and see how quickly she finds another foreigner to give her money and you become a forgotten history. Lets be honest most Westerners with average or limited means go to these places as a form of economical arbitrage your few dollars just gets you more than in The West. I am not against Westerners going to these places as long as you really understand your true motivation and accept the place for what it is.

I had a funny “shakedown” moment on the beach at Nusa Dua many, many years back. Me and a friend decided to go out on jet skis. Paid the fee and spent probably 45 minutes riding around on the sea. At one point my friend’s jet ski bumped against mine - but there was no speed involved, we were stationery. It was literally just the waves bumping us together. Suddenly the hireshop guys on the beach are shouting and jumping around.
Anyway, when we came in, they claimed there was damage (nothing visible ofc) and wanted to charge us many thousand IR. Well we were at the beach and didn’t have our wallets and our hotel was a good 10 minutes drive away. “No problem” they say “we will take you back to the hotel for you to get the money”.
So we get taken back - get the money, pay them, and off they go. We then sat and not being fully familiar with the exchange rate, worked out exactly how much that adventure had set us back. Turned out the “repair” bill, which came with a free ride back to the hotel, was cheaper than the hotels minibus that took us to the beach originally! 😂
It became a running joke as we explored the area. “Let’s find a cab if we can’t find a jet ski to kick!”.
Anyway - quality upload as usual friend. Safe travels!

Actually recent law allow more ppl to sue if theres a sexual relationship outside of marriage. Before its only husband or wife, but now parents or children can sue. I guess it only apply to indo citizen, but if foreigner sleeps w indonesian they might get sue by member of the nuclear family.
Sure its a controversy but its a middle ground cuz some ppl say now ppl cannot be "raided" by strangers, only their own nuclear family member can.
And most fam won't cuz it cant imprison only 1 party but must be both so their own family member as well.
This to prevent attempt of blackmail and such.
*context : the law finally pass just after cov id pandemy and mon key pox.
