    This was exactly what I have been looking for. When I was deciding what flash gear to get I was wanting a video comparing the power output between a strobe and a speed light so that I could make an informed decision with what I chose. I'm sure there would be people who would find it extremely helpful if you could do another video comparing various strobes and speed lights using a light meter, and labelling the video as such.
    In the end I went with a 5x speed light kit and when I need extra power I mount 2 or 3 speed lights inside a single soft box.

    I have an AD360ii plus multiple Godox hotshoe flashes. I actually have three TT350 flashes because I got two of them free from Adorama as part of a free package when I purchased my Sony cameras. That makes a nice travel flash kit...
    I love that all these units are capable of speaking to each other.
    The Li-on versions of my full size hotshoe flashes are great for their quick recycle while the "Y" power adapter is super for decreasing the recharge time on my AD360ii. At quarter power or lower, the recharge of the AD360ii with "Y" power yoke is almost instantaneous.

    It is interesting to compare the actual light output of various strobes. For example, in my studio I have an ELB400 with Quadra Action head, an Dynamite Baja B4, and two Normal ML400 studio strobes. The energy input of the Baja and the Norman lights are rated @ 400 J (w-s) while the Elinchrom ELB400 is 424 J (W-s). Please note that the energy rating is the energy input to the flash tube- different flash tubes may differ in their efficiency. In a test using my old Sekonic L-358 meter, I measured the bare bulb output of each unit at full power from 6ft at ISO 100. The results are: Baja B4 F11, ELB400 F13, Norman ML400 F16. With 7" reflector Baja B4 F14, ELB400 F25, Norman ML400 F29. From the results, the Norman strobes are greatly under-rated, the Baja B4 has the lowest output. I wonder how the AD600 would compare to the Baja B4 and the Norman lights...

    Thanks for this video! I own the AD600B TTL and the remote head and used it the other day for a shoot for Harper's BAZAAR. Being that I was shooting wide open at f/1.8, I noticed little to no difference in the power output between the head with the remote and without. At full power I noticed around 1/4 to 1/3rd stop (to my taste of exposure that is). So for all intent and purpose little to no differences what so ever. I love this system. The other day I used it all day long at the power output I needed and only used 2/5ths of the battery. I do have a second battery. But then again that was an interiors photo shoot.
    Just once question, what are you using as a case for your GODOX AD600B system? I do have the Godox Pb-600 Portable Flash Strobe Bag for the AD600B module only and I noticed that the Adorama Flashpoint 600 version has a very nice carrying case for the module, bowl, module, extra bulb, battery etc. I wrote GODOX to ask if they have a similar unit and waiting on their response.

    • @BenjaminKanarek
      @BenjaminKanarek 7 років тому

      I purchased the actual GODOX case in orange and black directly from GODOX. They now have them. Exactly like the Flashpoint.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому

      I use the same case from Godox. Flashpoint distributes a case in the exact same dimensions as the Godox bag. The only difference is the lid is padded on the Godox bag, flimsy on the Flashpoint bag (not sure why because otherwise they seem identical aside from the colors. Unfortunately it's not on Amazon, but I found it on Ebay as the Godox CB-09 . I fit 2 AD600's, AD360ii + battery, reflector, y-cable, and stand. I do not put my AD600 reflectors in there as I rarely use them.

    Thank you for the video, one of the best on the UA-cam. Can I quickly ask if you used deflector plate inside your softbox in this set up or you were just shooting your strobes/Flashes directly through diffusing panel? I understand this brand of softbox comes with the plate as a beauty dish. Please also advise if you tested with and without such plate and if there was light power loss due to using deflector plate? Thank you

    That's a decent amount of juice for a little speedlite, basically f/11 at ISO 100. That means at ISO 400 you could be shooting f/22 if need be. At least to me, that's pretty impressive for the cost and size savings over carrying larger units.

    Really appreciate the comparison Rob. Mostly I'm invested in the Phottix system (Odin) with their Mitros+ flashes (very reliable system) But have been thinking about getting the AD360II for TTL and HSS while using it with the phottix (odin) receivers so it can play nicely within my phottix system. Not sure if I'd want to get out of the phottix all together and get into the Godox system with X1 trigger, but might consider if the consistency and quality of light is not compromised at a better price point. Your thoughts?

    I found a rare problem in ad360ii c, while shooting at ISO 100 from my canon 700D it is giving me a red tone in all the pictures, in ISO 200 it is getting reduced and in ISO 400 nature colour tone can be seen. can you please explain it, why it's happening? I took few shots with other canon DSLRs and giving more or less same kind of images in different iso level

    Great video man! Answered pretty much all of my questions. How is the tranceiver for this Godox/Flashpoint system... is it reliable? I currently use YN622 tranceivers, and I love them (except for a few quirks).

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому

      I prefer using a speedlite to control the off camera lights over the X-1. I find it really reliable, but I find the controls of the V860II / R2 Lithium Ion TTL way more user friendly. My problem with the X-1 is that I don't feel like I can look away and adjust the power. Like, 4 clicks isn't always 4 adjustments with the X-1, whereas I can easily navigate the adjusments without looking on the speedlites.

However i am so concerned that it doesn't have a modelling light just incase i wanna shot in low light....how do i focus? This is soo much of a concern to me. Any advice pls? Hi Robert! Would you mind telling me how is the color consistency and light quality comparing it to Elinchrom, Profoto and Broncolor Monolights?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  8 років тому +1

      Hey Plamen,
      So all I can say is I see no practical difference between the Godox AD600 and the Profoto B1 / Elinchrom Ranger Quadra in terms of color consistency. I've never touched a Broncolor light. Keep in mind, I work in weddings + occasional commercial work, but nothing where color is hyper critical (where at 50K shift would be problematic). Light quality...that's a buzz phrase to me, light is light, and it behaves under the same laws no matter what it comes out of. Things such as flash duration are detailed on my channel, and can be compared with details of other companies online. All I know is I was considering Profoto B1's for a long time when the Godox AD600 came out. Being a mixed flash user the Godox AD600 is a much better choice to me. The only reason I would choose a Profoto B1 over the AD600 is if I needed instant recycle at very high power outputs.
      I hope this helps, I tried my best to answer while staying in my lane based on my true experiences.

    My very cheap Chinese studio strobes are a lot more consistent both in colour and aperture than my friend's Alien Bees. I also have the yn685 with the yn622c-tx and they are as good as anything canon do at a fraction of the cost. The days of Chinese imports being a joke are fading fast. I thinking the ad360 II are looking good because of their size and weight to get in to awkward spots. Great video.

    Thank you for the work on this, I only have the Xplor 600 so far and have been evaluating options for expanding the system. The bit of extra power you mentioned metering may be due to the light bouncing off the table if you metered handheld first. I was initially disappointed seeing the loss of power with the extension head that just about matched the 360ii, but as you mention the recycle time is a great advantage, as well as the LED modeling light, and the larger capacity battery. The 360ii is shaping up to be a nice option though for quick shoots with limited bag space and mobility in mind! Are you able to control the AD600 modeling light from the TT685 when it's used as the master on camera?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  8 років тому

      Yeah I'm really liking both. the AD360II is phenomenal when I'm working alone. Yes, the AD600 triggers off the TT685 as a controller on camera, as does the AD360II.

    are there any videos that show the limits of the 360 and the 600 in use. I only ever see the 360 been used close in I've not seen it used to light groups yet would it take to two 360's to light a group of people.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  8 років тому +1

      that all depends on the ambient/modifier situation. I have used the AD360 barebulb to light a family group with the sun at their back. If you were using a softbox or reverse umbrella you probably won't have much luck in sunlight with a group.

    • @robhallphoto

      I have 2 of the AD600 and 1 of the AD360ii. I'll use my AD600's as my 2 primary lights to fill a reception hall with a base level of light. Generally at a low power. The AD360 could easily do this as well. I basically use the AD600 if i'm fighting with the sun and need every drop of power I can get. I use the AD360ii if sun is not as much of an issue and I'm working alone, or if I have to move a lot at a location as its just lighter and faster to use.

    Nicely done.... Have you looked at 'hypersync' power at 1/1 for the ad600 and ad360 compared to 'HSS'. Incidentally it sounds (by your recycle speed on the ad360) you need the y connector for the PB960 battery....

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  8 років тому

      I quickly bought the Y Connector for the AD360II after someone told me about it. Now when I recommend the AD360ii to someone I tell them the stand clamp and y-connector are "required" accessories lol. It makes an insane difference.
      Anyways, the hypersync power 1/1 maintains a similar power gap between the two.

    • @RobCollins2015
      @RobCollins2015 8 років тому

      The point I was making about 'hypersync' is that by my testing (which isnt very rigorous) you get one extra stop power at 1/1 compared to HSS at 1/1 (full power) on the ad600. I havent tested hypersync on the ad360 but I am really interested in getting power efficiency out of the ad600.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  8 років тому

      oh, yes, I seem to lose about 2/3-1 stop in efficiency immediately flipping to hss in real world usage. Oddly enough they tend to meter almost equal though. Not sure whats going on there!

      Unfortunately, due to it's high recommendation, it is typically delayed in shipping.
      With the bowens mount you can use with this to have it work with AD600 and speedlights or even an AD360II

      If you can't wait for the shipping delay on the box I previous suggested, the Phottix Spartan softbox in 28" is a great alternative.

    Get the 2:1 cable for the 360 and the recycle times are cut in 1/2.
    FYI The original AD 600s were delivered with about the same output as the 360.
    As near as I can tell the early lights were only available direct from China.
    In the next rendition Godox increased the power output well over a stop...a step in the right direction!
    I hear Godox is starting to ship new studio strobes (mains powered) compatible with the new triggers.
    If so this is the first time a manufacturer has assembled a coordinated system speedlight to big studio strobe.
    Very exciting stuff!

      The original AD600 shipping with the same power as AD360 is simply not true. considering both the AD600s tested in this video were ordered the very first day they were available from China, and are quite possibly the first two AD600s to hit stateside.

      The efficiency loss of the AD600 and AD360ii in hss is .1 stop. But, you will also lose a stop for each stop of shutter speed increase over your sync rate. So, if your max sync speed is 1/200, you will lose 2.1 stops at 1/800.

    You said the difference between the ad360 and the tt685 is one stop but isn't f16 to f8.8 almost 2 stops?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  8 років тому +1

      Nope. 8.8 Is just above 8 2/3 Stop. On a meter, 10th stops would increase as such. 8.5 (8 and a half stops), 8.6, 8.7, 8.8, 8.9, 11, 11.1 and so on. So the difference between F16 and F11 is one stop and F11 and F8.8 is .2 stops. In total it is 1.2 stop difference.

    Does the X1 transmitter for the Xplor 600 automatically switch the strobe to HS when you go over the camera's max sync speed? If not, is there a way to switch it over without having to walk to the light and press the HS button?

    • @robhallphoto

      as long as your camera settings have HSS enabled (auto-fp on Nikon) so the camera allows you to exceed the typical sync speed, the X1 will automatically goes into HSS.

      That's pretty awesome. So if you look at the Xplor 600 display you'll see it automatically turn on HS and turn it back off depending on shutter speed? I clicked the link to your camera bag and saw that you also use the Nikon D810. Any difference between setting auto-fp to 1/250 vs 1/320?
      Hope you don't mind all the questions, just want to make sure it's right for me before purchasing :)

      Thats right,
      It will change back and forth and you'll see it represented on the display as you change your SS.

      He didn't. Some Sekonic meters for an optional radio trigger module that you put in the back and you can fire the flash as you take a reading. There is no Godox module available (sadly) but you can use auto reset cordless mode - you press the button on the light meter and it waits for up to 90 seconds for a flash. You then trigger the flash with the test button on the unit or from a remote and it' displays the output.

    If @ 24mm the 685 is doing 1 1/3 stop slower than the 360, I have to suppose shooting with a 85mm (or higher) zoom mean the direct power on a given point overcomes the 360, isn't it?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому

      Sure, you can get a higher meter reading, but it's just because its a more narrow beam of light. You could also put a reflector on the AD360II and the speedlite wouldn't be able to come near the reading. The point of the power of a hybrid strobe like the AD360ii isn't to just be more powerful at a narrow beam, it's to be omnidirectional and create the most soft, wrapped light possible within modifiers like softboxes. When considering volume of light the AD360ii is substantially (about 4-6x) more powerful than a speedlite.

    I am confused a BIT with the Godox line for TTL vs Non TTL!
    Lets say the AD600BM sold with no transmitter.
    IF I buy a NON TTL model( no transmitter with it), Just a basic AD600BM. I know this will not know if I am shooting a Canon Nikon nor Sony.
    But then if I get a XTR-16 with the X1 for either Canon/Nikon/Sony....
    Shouldn't the transmitter with the XTR16 plugged into the flash give me TTL according to the model of X1 (C/N/S) transmitter?
    So If I buy a X1C it should give TTL with the Canon. If I buy the Sony X1S and use it on my Sony A7RII, it should give TTL on the Sony.
    Does anyone know this 100%?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому +1

      +Phil Indeblanc not at all, the AD600BM will never go into a TTL mode because it doesn't have the information inside. It's like using YN-622TX with a 560 speedlite. It doesn't matter what type of radio equipment you use, if the light doesn't have TTL there's no way to fake it.

    • @philindeblanc
      @philindeblanc 7 років тому

      Robert Hall Photography I see. I was under the impression that the transmitter X1 communicates the cameras metering to the XTR16, and that's what the flash uses to output.
      So there is no way of buying one set of the ad600 and adapt it with ttl to more than just Canon or just Sony? No difference in what triggers you use? I have the Ad360iiCanon with ttl, but just ordered 2 non ttl 600s with triggers for Sony and Canon.
      Uuughhh!!
      So basically would that also be that if I buy the Sony ttl model I can't get ttl with my Canon, Eve. Using a different Canon trigger?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому

      The AD600 accepts signals from any X1, that's why there is only 1 model of it (as oppose to the AD360ii / V860II which are denoted as N, C, or S models for their respective brand. So all you need is the right X1 trigger and you'll have all the functions, without any receiver at all. Although you won't have TTL of course since the Manual 600 doesn't do it.

    • @philindeblanc
      @philindeblanc 7 років тому

      Robert Hall Photography thanks for the feeback Robert. I see the 600 sell as branded models also, for Canon, Sony, Nikon, so.....Just to further clarify ...So if I get a TTL version that sells as a Canon model with trigger, and I want to use it on a Nikon or Sony camera....If later I get a Sony or Nikon X1 trigger, I can get TTL on either camera using a AD600 that is ttl capable?
      This should be more clear to consumers.
      Hope you know and can clarify.

    So basically AD360 has almost same power as AD600+H600!???
    Thinking aloud:
    AD360 with accu weighs about 1.4kg
    AB600 + H600 weights about 4kg
    Big con for the H600 system in my opinion, or do I overlook something here?
    Two notes/questions:
    A) Recylce time is almost the same for both systems when you use a Y-cable for the AD360. So your statement that recycle is considerable slower with AD360 compared to AB600 is a bit misleading in my opinion.
    B) There are rumours, that the H1200-head, powered by just ONE AD600 has less power loss compared to the H600 head (maybe due to a more efficient H1200 bulb?) Do you know anything about that?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому +1

      +Florian Andreas not really that close, 16.9 for H600 vs 16.0 on AD360ii, that's 9/10 of a stop more light from the H600 which is about what's expected given they are a 600w/360w light.
      A) If you look at the units at full power, and include the Y cable on the AD360II, then yes they both recycle full power at about 2 seconds. However, the AD600 is putting out 1.4 more stops of light at 1/1, so if you were to knock the AD600 to the same max output of the AD360II it would be recycle about 3x as fast as the AD360II, 6x as fast without the Y cable. That is a significant difference.
      B) I've only known one person who's tested it and had those results, I can't verify but that seems to be the case so far!

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому

      +MAD Science Hacks hahahaha. You should really expand your photography knowledge before you come at people like this. Some lenses have a maximum aperture of 22, but others have a maximum aperture of 32. Then, looking beyond dSLRs you can get apertures of 64, or 128. Measuring light output is a matter of relativity and can go far beyond 22, even if your camera can't. If I cut the distance by 1/2 and measured that same light, it would measure at f/45.4
      So again, make sure you are informed before you decide to try and trash someone else. And if you need more proof, just google "F/64"

    • @MadScienceHacksTV
      @MadScienceHacksTV 7 років тому +1

      Robert Hall Photography I think you should not assume what my expanse of knowledge is or isn't. I think you are comically confused. Aperture F22 and 22 stops does not refer to the same thing but is rather a standardised measurement of light output that enters the lens. 1 F stop is not generally 1 stop of light. You need to watch your video again and hear what you said... more than once. I kind of feel sorry for you. You spent all that time responding to me but all you did is ramble on about something so irrelevant. Proves how confused you are. I don't need Google to reassure myself of what I know. Saying "22.4 stops" is just insane. The standard scale of light stops would never exceed that much for the gear you are using. The standard scale from F1 to F32 is only 10 stops. And just to amuse you... DSLR's are capable of apertures beyond F32. Heard of pinhole photography? I'll give you some time to verify the above with Google..

    Just roughly in my head, f 22.4 is just over one stop brighter than f 16. You said it was about 1.4 stops difference. Also, roughly in my head, f 16 is just under two stops (about 1 2/3 stops) brighter than f 8.8. You said it was just one stop.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  8 років тому

      In meter terms, a reading of 22.4 is "22 and 4/10th of a stop". 22.9 is 1/10th of a stop from 32, not 25.
      Therefore 22.4 is 1.4 stops higher than 16, and 8.8 is 1.2 stops lower than 16.
      A reading of 8.8 would be represented as F10 on a camera.

    Why using the Head halfs the power on the AD600 ?? It should be exact the same power because it makes no difference, there is only a cable between it, nothing more... dont understand this! Can you tell me? EDIT: I tested it with my AD600MB, with head and withoud head, firing through a softbox, maximum power 1/1 in M Mode, 1/125. I didnt measured the light but i compared the photo. There is nearly no difference between both configurations. In your test with head there is a loss of a full step, but i have to my taste a loss of 1/8 steps. Nearly no difference.

    • @ianmaclennan6705
      @ianmaclennan6705 8 років тому +1

      I use the AD600 with the H600 head and can confirm Robert's measurement that the light loss is about 0.5 stop. This is due entirely to the power loss in the extension cable. Separating the flash lamp from the discharge electronics means that the very high discharge currents have to travel along a cable with finite resistance. Even although the cable resistance is probably only tens of milliohms the high current will lead to a significant power loss because the power loss is proportional to the square of the current.. However the flexibility of being able to mount the flash bulb in an extension boom to create a high light source easily outweighs the half stop loss for me. The power and portability of the AD600 opens up amazing possibilities for use in the field. Here are a few examples using HSS mode from the UCI Downhill World Cup in Fort William last week :

      Thank you for your answer! But as i wrote, i got perhaps 1/8 step loss but never a half stop. i compared directly the images... perhaps there are build-differences in our cables? but yes you are right, this system is very great! Nice pictures/examples you posted!

      In HSS Mode you can at least double the output by shifting the flash-time from F00: 0 to 26 in the X1T trigger, but the edges can get little bit darker then.

      I doubt that the cables would be different as my H600 cables are already quite beefy and to reduce the loss virtually to zero would require a very substantial increase in copper thickness. How did you measure the difference?

      Sorry Max - you already stated your post that you did not measure the difference. If you can see a visual difference in the image then it is probably at least a third of a stop so I am pretty sure that if you get out the light meter it will confirm the loss is actually half a stop.

    I use 2 AD360ii’s with out the modifiers they come with to shoot skateboarding outside in bright sunlight and they have absolutely no problem overpowering the sun to freeze action
