Hunting with the 1873 Winchester rifle

  • The 1873 Winchester has a very unique place in my heart. Being a child I never dreamed about having a bolt action rifle, the rifle for me was always operated by a lever. Hunting with a cartridge charged the traditional way with black powder gives a special touch to the day as well. And if all these things are happening in snow? Well, that's just perfect. Let me guide you through a few days in the woods. Sighting, using the Ideal tool for making cartridges, target shooting, making a lunch from the game, all included in this episode.

Your earlier videos with your 1873 is what originally attracted me to your channel. They even got me back into shooting as I had given it up for 45 years. I now own an 1873 like yours as well as an 1892 Rossi in stainless steel, both in .357 magnum. I even reload with an Ideal tool not unlike yours and it reminds me of tying my own flies for trout and salmon. Both the fly tying and the simple hand reloading I find to be as enjoyable, if not more so, than the shooting and fly casting itself. I still no longer hunt or fish as I had my day, actually many, many days in pursuit of game and gamefish and I am content to leave them alone to flourish now. I don’t harbor any animosity towards others that still go afield so long as they are respectful and I think your videos show what I mean when i say being respectful. Thanks for another enjoyable look at how peaceful and enjoyable hunting can be. Keep on keepin’ on.

I started watching your channel because of your presentation of lesser known vintage firearms and stayed because of your hunting videos. The romantic, poetic way you present the hunt and being so respectful not only to the game but to the hunting ground itself is absolutely amazing.
This is a far cry from most videos where the hunters are treating it all like an amusement and posing to photos as if they had just killed a T-Rex with their bare hands. You show that ,we the hunters, are merely part of the life cycle and not masters of Mother Nature.
Also the quick history of the gun, preparation of the meat and finally you enjoying the fruits of the hunt with your family(including animals) is an icing on already incredible videos. Respect from Poland!

Beautiful rifle. But I will never give up my 1892 in .44 WCF, that has been in the family since 1892. And has taken everything in Pennsylvania up to white-tailed deer. Always dependable even after 131 years. Just need a bit of TLC to keep going.

I cannot and will not try to add to the comments about this superlative video. It is as close to perfect as one could hope for. Like others, I am not sure I shoot to reload or reload to shoot, but this video touches all the bases, right down to passing on some of what you have learned to the next generation. I wish I had had someone like you to mentor me when I was young enough to learn, but I am getting up there (71) and that time has more or less passed me by. So I will watch and enjoy your videos instead. Please keep them coming as your time permits.

An 1873 Winchester was the first Winchester that I purchased during my collecting. As I recall it had a twenty-six inch barrel and was in 38-40. It had a bead front and buckhorn rear sights. At the time, Dominion made ammunition that was safe to use in it so I bought four boxes which gave me lots of cases for reloads. The case necks were very thin and had to be annealed after two or three loadings. As far as hunting goes, I think I got a couple of pot-shots at grouse but I left them to raise more chicks for another day! Always enjoy your vids. Cheers, Dan.

A day truly worth living and remembering. May the war gods stay away from your beautiful land. They have visited so much I fear they may dwell there. God bless and keep you and yours.

Great documentary about the use of a rifle for hunting from beginning to the end. You are a very respectful hunter and a great maker of ducomentaries. I also like to effort you take to obtain the special tools for making ammunition in the wild. Nagyon tisztelem önt.

Amazing video honestly one of my favorites from you. This reminds my of my native American culture and practices passed from my father as I will one day pass to my sons and daughters. To all great hunters and family traditions around the world. 🤝
