Conquest has to be my favorite game. We played kings for years but after conquest, we haven’t looked at kings again.
Definitely an advocate for all of these alternatives, especially Kings of War. So simple and perfect for tournament and narrative play. With rules for mega battles and sieges, it covers all bases for that big battle feel.
Hadn't heard of some of these, will have to give them a looksee! Thanks for the vid 😊
Not tried some of these games yet. Another one that springs to mind is Age of Fantasy Regiments from OPR.
Not heard of that one
Kings has excellent rules. Games are less forgetting rules all the time and more tactical positioning and army building. Love me some Kings.
I recently picked up a set of KoW rules and was really impressed with them.
Thanks for the video, very enjoyable.
I have to mention though that you missed the best and most important alternative of ToW, which is no other than the 9th Age.
Having basically the best rules and most balanced armies out there, being in my opinion by far the best table strategy game at the moment.
I didn't include it because I've no real knowledge of the game. I'll probably do an update video a later date with some of the suggestions in the comments.
@@irregularmagazine That would be awesome, thank you!!
Instead of Frostgrave I would say Oathmark is a better alternative, because is from the same author and was created for mass battles.
I've not played Oathmark which was why I didn't include it. I've no experience of the game so I couldn't really talk about it and make a judgement on the game.
WarGods (Crocodile Games) is also a cool choice. Also Argatoria (Spellcrow) and Forgotten World (FireForge Games).
Also community driven The Ninth Age is a interesting alternative.
The first that comes to mind is the classic game Hordes of the Thing (DBA fantasy game). Saga Age of Magic is what I recommend for most people who want to play an alternative to Warhammer. The skirmish game plays well, with not many figures and it is quick enough to play a couple of games. Since the the company only sells the rules, the miniatures are up to your imagination. Saga is highly competitive for people who enjoy that part of the hobby which none of the games you mention offer. The boards give armies their style of play. If you want something larger, Rick Priestley's Hail Caesar with Shadow Storm. If you have played "To the Strongest" then I highly recommend Monsters and Magic. To the Strongest claim to fame is the battlefield is broken down into a grid system so measuring figures is gone and trust me, you will not miss it. You can roll a dice but the preferred method is to use a deck of cards for unit activation. Simon Miller is working on his own fantasy rules but until those come out, this is fun to play.
You should definitely check out the game of God's, they're running a beta at the minute, plays like all your favourite games in one, my go to game at the minute.
Old World is alright, not amazing, kings of war is fun.
Not tried frostgrave yet.
Frostgrave seems more like narrative war cry than warhammer the old world
I say in the video it's narrative skirmish, but it's a great game
Nice video. What are your thoughts on Oathmark? Seems like it would be a good alternative for someone that wants to have a similar experience as they would playing Warhammer the old world
I've not had a chance to play Oathmark but I've heard good things about the game.
@@irregularmagazine Oathmark is an elegant rule system with some great ideas, such as allowing to create a "Kingdom" with specific types of territories that "unlock" certain types of units for your army. Conquering or losing territories during a campaign therefore determines changes to the units available for your ranks: i.e., conquering hilly terrain during a campaign could give you the opportunity to add a Giant or some other kind of creature to your army (which can also be made up of units of different races!).
@@alessioscandy I like the idea of creating a Kingdom.. will have to pick up a copy, cheers.
My goodness! You forgot to mention The Ninth Age: Fantasy Battles!
I've not played it which is why and like I say in the video I've just dipped my toe into what's available out there.
Hobgoblin is also one to look out for.
Not heard of that one, will look it up.
It comes in pints.the idea is to drink as many as you can and then look for junk food.
@@klintreeves Lol.... Hobgoblin beer.. not sure why I didn't make that connection lol I was thinking it was a new wargame I'd not come across. As it happens I played a game last night. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@irregularmagazine greatest game ever
Relicblade!
I've not come across that one will have to look it up. Oathmark is already on my list to try this year. So I'll do a follow up video after I've checked out some of the suggestions in the comments.
@@irregularmagazine Relicblade is a skirmish games with four to six models a side played on a 2’x2’ board. The art and minis are fantastic. The game is made by a single individual, Sean Sutter. He created the game, sculpted the minis, did the art and even packs the boxes as they are shipped.
@@photonfartsqueeze6694 I'll check it out, cheers
