Among the more popular family acts on the '70s R&B circuit, Memphis' Sylvers recorded for Pride, MGM, Capitol, Casablanca, and Geffen during their 13-year chart run. No less than nine of the ten brothers and sisters in the family -- Olympia, Leon, Charmaine, James, Edmund, Ricky, Angie, Pat, Foster -- performed in the group that was viewed as a Southern version of the Jackson 5. Their 1972 Pride single "Fool's Paradise" got things going in the right direction, reaching number 14 on the R&B charts. They had three other Top Ten R&B hits in the '70s, but their biggest song was "Boogie Fever" in 1975. It perfectly captured the disco spirit and topped both the R&B and pop charts that year. "Hot Line" was another Top Ten on both lists in 1976, and their second biggest single. They scored another Top 20 R&B single on Casablanca in 1978, "Don't Stop, Get Off," but the charming qualities of their earlier material seemed more calculated. They couldn't recapture the spark during their mid-'80s period on Geffen.

This song should have been a number one hit. The Sylvers were so underrated & definitely deserved better. The music industry & their management definitely messed over them. They could have really did well, if they had the right management & someone who had their best interest. So Sad!! But they still were a nice looking family & had a lot of nice songs. I still listen to their music & i'm still a fan!!

Charmaine did come back in to the group in 1984. From the late 70s and well into the entire 1980s, Charmaine wrote several songs for many of the SOLAR artists including The Sylvers (in 81") and The Whispers as well as co-writing many songs for SOS Band for their 1982 lp, SOS III. She co wrote Janet Jackson's 1983 R&B/Rock hit "Come Give Your Love To Me."

And the Jackson 5 came first, so they were the first superstar family. But As talented as the Jacksons are, The Sylvers could give them a run. I believe if the machine was behind The Sylvers like they were for The Jacksons, The Sylvers would have the edge *as a group*. Again, no one could ever compare to Michael; The Sylvers don't have a worthy equivalent (no disrespect). But The Sylvers had no weak links. They were all solid. Whoever sang lead was always solid. Their harmonies were impeccable. Immaculate. The Jacksons together aren't topping The Sylvers vocally. And they were always in sync with their choreography. And from the beginning Leon was writing most of their songs (with James contributing a few as well) and would go on to be one of the greatest producers we've ever heard.

This was one of my favorite groups from back-in-the-day. I still have some of the albums and will be transferring to mp3's. I just saw "Unsung" which explains what happened to them. I didn't know Edmund had died!!! No good news for Ricky and Foster.

Nah, Foster's voice is a bit deeper than Edmund. Foster was 19 when this video and the Concept album was released. I wish they made videos for "Reach Out" and "Heart Repair Man" because other than this song, those two were my favorite cuts on the Concept album. Their next and last album album, Bizarre was a kick ass album (listen to "Tension", "Falling For Your Love", the title cut, and "Boomerang" and you'll know what I mean)
