Oh man, same here. I’ve been rewatching all the videos from 3-4 years ago and they were possibly the best guitar shows/episodes/programs I’ve ever seen!
I am blessed to be one of the first people to own the Key 9 and did a long winded video about it. I've had it for years - love it sometimes, other times need a break from it. I recently pulled it out and rewatched the Bill Rupert videos (he is a treasure). One thing that I think should also be said about these 9 pedals: use your bridge pickup. Yes... the bridge. Notice that's what Bill does... and I fought that because I come from a Jazz background... though the proof is in the pudding. The Key 9 seems to "like" the higher timbral/frequency range of the pickups closer to the bridge. They make for a better blend, though even when you turn the dry all the way down the "effect" sounds better from the bridge. Mike Matthews and the team at EHX think this stuff up and sell us dope things at affordable prices. We are wealthy to be musicians today - and that's just pure fact.
Proud owner of a very early B9. Some other tips for potential users: put a compressor before (to feed the B9 a consistent signal) or after (to tame unwanted cutoffs or spikes). Ditch the Mod control and put a decent Leslie emulation after it with a Ramp up/down option (I use the Leslie mode in my Digitech EX7 Expression Factory). If you aim to approximate a Hammond, play single notes, lots of double stops or chord fragments of 3 or 4 strings, don't bend and make the most of the sustain. OD/Dist after the B9 is instant Jon Lord
I pair my B9 with EHX's own superb Lester G Deluxe. Hell of a pedal duo especially when the organ sound gets it's own amp and doesn't have to go through with the guitar. I'd also recommend a volume pedal somewhere to help even out spikes more easily.
EHX should make a super deluxe multi effect with all of the patches on all the 9 series pedals, plus more parameter controls. Call it "The Whole 9 Yards"
Man aside from how cool these pedals are this video is just overall incredible. All around very quality. The commentary and the organization and the band it’s just awesome. I feel like I should’ve paid for it haha
I hope one day that they make a nano version of the Mel9, and the others as well. I don't need the extra I/O, 1 in & 1 out is good enough. If they can now make the pico series, the DSP/board issues are solved enough to do this. They can at least shrink these to nano-size.
Bass9 owner here! You perfectly described me as the target audience. I think everyone wants a combined 9 series pedal with all sounds combined, midi presets, expression input and a dedicated freeze footswitch. Besides that, a Piano9 or Pia9 with grand piano and DX7 style sounds would be cool.
@@ExplodingPsyche Freak mixing accident. That’s why I always say it’s safer to mix all in the box. Analog gear and their high voltage components can be so dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. 😞

Thanks for bringing back the style of the pandemic-era videos which got me through 2020. I'm a bassist who has used an EHX Bass Mono Synth pedal for years, but what I's REALLY like them to develop is a pedal FOR bass which emulates all the classic keyboard bass sounds like Taurus, Mini Moog, organ pedals, etc., as well as more modern keyboard bass sounds. A polyphonic pedal which tracks well on bass -- I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
@@ExplodingPsyche Yesir, and I’d argue that nobody shows the full scope of a pedal quite like Bill does. His Effectology series is a must for any creative mind. So much fun and so many ideas. Then of course Bret Kingman, Mike Hermanns, Ola England and now Josh have all added to a great landscape. Im serious when I say they’re as influential on my playing as any modern recording artist.
The best way I've found to use the 9-series pedals in with an EHX Tri-Parallel - the parallel mixing of a single source through any combination of 3 effects loops allows the 9-series pedal to sound like a separate instrument mixed (as if at the sound board) with the guitar with various guitar effects added in the other fx loops. By heavy use of the sustain on a couple of the pedals (Mel-9 and Synth-9 particularly), a pad + guitar can be achieved (somewhat like a Freeze, but only affecting one of the instruments)!
Mel 9 is the perfect, "weird sounds for shoe gaze" type pedal. Image a huge stereo delay and reverb with those cello sounds bouncing around on a venue's speakers.
The soft picking at 5:50 sounded so nice. Those few notes Josh played was reminding me of the creepy Vermillion Town theme from Pokemon Red/Blue. (P.S. Squirtle rules)
I use the Mel9 in our instrumental surfband, setting 8 low choir. We use it as accompaniment for a riff in a Phrygian scale. A low choir screaming a low E

Oooh, back in the groove. Really loving the switched rhythm section in the jams. I have the C9 and is impressive. I should use it more...but they are all great. EHX should make a 81 model with all the sounds in it! The demos made by Bill Ruppert are immense, he's in my view the absolute best demo guy on the tube. Check out his rendition of Pink Floyd's On the run...
The Mellotron was literally a tape loop playing machine. It had tape loops actually in it, note the wow and flutter. That's why almost nobody took them on the road as they always broke down and were stupid heavy - just ask then Moody Blues, they took one out and it was a tech's nightmare. They also did all the orchestration on Threshold Of A Dream on a Mellotron.
I love this episode and those like this with the jam sessions! Also we need more "just try stuff" episodes. Loved the one with the nylon string guitar from Taylor with effects. Would like to see an episode with acoustic guitars and distortion type sounds with reverb and delay.
Love this channel you have taught me almost everything I know about pedals in the past couple weeks love this pedal series so 345,479 thank you for giving me a 1 in one millionth of a chance
Thanks for the rundown of all the options. So many good points. Biggest takeaway?: Don't play like a guitar player. Think like a keyboardist. Approach chords as three builder notes, Root, Third and Fifth. If you strum all 6 strings it's kind of like a three year old pushing down on a bunch of keys of a piano, just a bunch of noise. Isolate for the best tones.
Unfortunately these pedals are not converting or handling MIDI in any way. They are basically reprocessing the input sound using FFT algorithms, which radically reshape the spectral characteristics of an input source. It’s also how EHX’s freeze and super-ego pedals work.
I am the only musician in my church and lead worship playing acoustic/electric guitar, along with three girl singers. I make my own backing tracks with Aeros Looper and Beatbuddy. But what makes all the difference is the EHX String 9, and the Stryman Cloudburst pedals! The backing tracks I make sound great. The SingularSound Looper and drum machine make it so easy to create them. But the String 9 and Cloudburst make my acoustic sound just incredible! Would recommend all this gear to anyone wanting to make the best backing tracks, and want a single acoustic guitar to sound like heaven!
when i was a child i was dreaming if there's any way that I can make sound of trumpet/organ/synth on electric guitar. And till today I know the 9 series, these are really really interesting!! thank you so so much for this episode, this pedals are all amazing invention to all the musician!
The String9 has allowed me to keep synths at home for one band, and just play parts on the guitar. Love it! Need to get a Mel9 and a C9 for my pedal steel.
Not a big pedal guy but when playing a solo, my B9 is always lightly mixed in with my acoustic. Think the beginning of Blue Collar Man. I could play an entire hockey game too! Best pedal ever!
what I really want and kind of need is an effect that will faithfully re-create the sound of acoustic pianos. Grand, baby grand, upright, etc. I tried learning how to play piano and I was horrible. Hopefully an acoustic piano effect is in the works. thank you, JHS for this episode.
Awesome video! Thank you so much for covering this series of pedals. They are truly spectacular pedals for coming up with new song-writing ideas especially for guitars who suck at playing keyboard. I think II need need all of them. They all have fantastic sounds. EHX should do a larger pedal that combines all of these pedals into one big multi-FX unit. That's what I would like to see from EHX. Also the songs you guys were playing were absolutely amazing. I hope you guys do a compilation album of some of these songs. The last few on this video I could listen to over and over. Very fun songs! I especially liked the string one (Dracula Boss Fight). That one sounded very goth and fun song for Halloween. As a Type-O-Negative fan that made me very happy.
As someone who has owned and used the B9 for a number of years, live and studio, one of the best pieces of advice I can give is seperate it from your guitar completely. So live, ideally a full range keyboard amp or the PA with only wet signal, then run the dry guitar through your regular guitar amp. Immediately takes on a life of its own and sounds better for it. Treat it more like a seperate instrument and it'll sound more like one. EHX were smart to make a dry output for this, then you can turn the dry control dial to zero and get only organ, perfectly separating the two. I cannot emphasise this enough.
What I love about Josh is he’d be doing the same type of content (with different production values) if he didn’t have a pedal company. He loves all pedals.
I bought a Mel 9 shortly after its release and it’s been one of my all time favourite effects pedals ever since it arrived and I plugged into it. You can spend hours with this outstanding pedal and still not get the best from it. You need to spend a few quality weeks in isolation with a Mel 9 to fully understand what it can do especially when linked to other outstanding effects pedals.👍
Those last pieces you played with the Strings pedal were stellar. The Dracula One and the rest. There’s an album and band there. Fave was the Strings followed by the Mellotron.
I love these episodes. Great Wall through of these pedals. I have often thought about getting one, but never sure which one. I’m thinking of the Synth9…I love the band jams… your music is cool. You should release it. Thanks again.
The Mel9 is a wonderful thing. My duo partner has one, she plays an electro harp through it. My 12-string goes through my Mel9, and the outputs each have their own phaser & shimmer/reverb. A third channel has flanger & Cloudburst. We have fun.
I play guitar in a 3 piece classic rock cover band. We strive to create a full sounding performance without the empty spots that can exist in a three piece arrangement. We accomplish this by featuring vocal harmony in almost every song, often three part harmony. Also, I use a digital mixer with saved EQ settings that seat all instruments and vocals cleanly in the mix. There's no mud or artifacts and our sound in most venues is natural, full, and clear. We multitask and we find creative ways to use our strengths to work around our weaknesses. My younger brother, our drummer, also sings lead and harmony and plays harmonica on several songs while playing drums. I make full use of a pedalboard of effects to add many different textures to our music. One of my pedals is the C9. I mostly use the Shimmer setting. It pairs very well with my guitar and allows me to create the sound of an accompanying organist while keeping the full presence of my guitar. It's very effective in building song intensity. I often activate it softly in the second verse and it becomes more prominent as the song progresses. We love to watch audience reaction when folks look puzzled trying to figure out where the sound comes from. They usually notice it immediately We get lots of comments from musicians from other bands who can't believe what they're hearing is coming from only three people. I'm recently retired. I just turned 60 years of age. My brother and me have been performing and gigging for over 43 years. This is our first 3 piece band and we're having the time of our lives musically. It's very challenging and has inspired us to stretch and increase our abilities. We're playing things now we never thought possible. We feel like kids again. Pedals like the C9 are invaluable tools to me and well worth every penny paid and then some! Thank you for your review and for sharing your knowledge and experience for our benefit. For anyone interested, I use an ampless rig. My pedalboard consists of 12 effects pedals including the C9, a Radial Bigshot EFX switch pedal for better control using the C9, plus a Radial JDX Direct Drive amp emulator/direct box that is the foundation of my rig. It all works very effectively and I get compliments on my sound and tone.
28:37 Electro Harmonix has the tri mixer. But it would be nice to have a floor mixer/selector w/effects loop and expression on the volume. These pedals are so versatile for ambient looping. They need a “mother pedal” to incorporate a mix. Loop. And expression. Stereo please.
I gotta say, I picked up a Mel9 and use it like Bill showed in the EHX demo as a backing to guitar (after a hotone acoustic simulator pedal, dry at 100%, wet at ~25%, followed by reverb) and it sounds great. The Cello really shines as an accompaniment imo.
342,000 is the number. anyway, this is a video that is long overdue, but in a way where i didn't know it deserved to be made until it was. these are legendary and this is another of one of your many great videos. if this reads like teachers pet vibes, im over it. thanks for what you do.
the 9 series line is genius because you can't do it with an H9 or Helix or whaterver. so unique. all my friends with one of these on their board would never consider removing it for any reason.
I'm a happy owner of a C9, a Key9 and a Mel9. 😁For doing demos on my own, this pedals are really fantasctic as I can't play keyboards but I love blended sounds of guitars and keybords. I usually use only the wet sound from the pedal, and play guitar parts separately
I actually couldn't get over how amazing Nick & Addison's bass(es) sounded. A couple of the pedals I thought, "oh, that's the Green-Eyed Lady" sound or "Oh, that's "The Violence of Truth" sound. Actually, that might've been the same pedal, different settings. I've long wanted to pick up the M9 but I think the C9 and whatever the Rhodes-sounding pedal was (E9?) I'd actually strongly consider as well. Great jams, gents.
Listening to Bill Rupert sold me on the c9. I run signal through aby switch. A goes to guitar rig and B goes to PA channel. I have to drop highs and volume there because I'm not going to finger pick just for c9 sake. It makes a nice filler lower in the band mix and only use it for extra texture here and there. Ty for this great video!
I bought the B9 in 2014. I bought it the day my local music store put them on the shelves. I was there when they first put them on the shelf and I bought one then. I think I was the first guy to buy one from that store.
I’m a hack guitar player and an even worse hack of a keys player. I love the 9 series for bridging the gap between the two. I’d love to see a synth pedal that can do arpeggiated chords/sequences using some of the classic 80s synth sounds.
I have the C9 and the Mel 9, they both benefit from a limiter and/or compressor following them just to tame the dynamic, also a rotary pedal behind the organ sounds is great, and reverb of course. They also sound good with solid state amps or preamps.
@alexandrn5519 is the winner of the Electro Harmonix B9!!
What was the number? Was it 7? I bet it was 7.
Congratulations!

Unfortunately these pedals are not converting or handling MIDI in any way. They are basically reprocessing the input sound using FFT algorithms, which radically reshape the spectral characteristics of an input source. It’s also how EHX’s freeze and super-ego pedals work.
PLEASE DO NOT STOP PRODUCING THE NOTAKLON ,THEY ARE ALREADY TRYING TO SELL IT FOR $200 AND UP USED.
Damn. I ordered mine last week. I would imagine eventually they will catch the production up with the demand.

This video just received the fastest like in my life, under 40 seconds, what a great content!!!
The EHX 9 series are all fun on different levels. Too bad they will all be $400 plus two cups of coffee to purchase after this episode 😅😂🤣
Luckily they’re still in production. The JHS effect is usually more prominent on used and rare gear.
@@thetribalist6923 indeed. I'm just being silly.
@@jimthecraftyguitarist878 ha my bad. I’m short, so lots of jokes go over my head.
You should make a pedal board with all the 9 series pedals, and demo all of them at once. Then, we can watch our ears bleed.
I can't see my ears. Should I see my doctor?
Thanks for the Joy Techniques plug. What a fantastic record!
That "Hold on Lucy" Arp 9 demo track was my favorite of your pedal demo sounds I've ever heard. So catchy.
Always been fascinated by this series. Thanks for this review!
when i was a child i was dreaming if there's any way that I can make sound of trumpet/organ/synth on electric guitar.
What a fun show . Really enjoyed this. Cheers !
I would love to see a video about distortion pedals on a TB-303!!
Not a big pedal guy but when playing a solo, my B9 is always lightly mixed in with my acoustic.
Think the beginning of Blue Collar Man.
I could play an entire hockey game too!
Best pedal ever!
I love these video formats so much better than the live ones
what I really want and kind of need is an effect that will faithfully re-create the sound of acoustic pianos. Grand, baby grand, upright, etc. I tried learning how to play piano and I was horrible. Hopefully an acoustic piano effect is in the works. thank you, JHS for this episode.
ADDISON 😊 it was time to enjoy again this nice episode format
Love the jams. It's rare to see pedal reviews in actual context.
Nothing like a new JHS video !!
Those last pieces you played with the Strings pedal were stellar. The Dracula One and the rest. There’s an album and band there. Fave was the Strings followed by the Mellotron.
Yep. I've had a B9 in the box for about 5 years and just recently pulled it out. I may have a use for it.
Recently picked up a used Synth9 on Reverb without really doing my homework, so this episode is just freakin awesome 👏🏾
I love these episodes. Great Wall through of these pedals. I have often thought about getting one, but never sure which one. I’m thinking of the Synth9…I love the band jams… your music is cool. You should release it. Thanks again.
My guess is 864 ... Great video! I've tried to find a video with all these to compare. I've been debating on getting one for a few years now.
C9 owner...have loved it. Great pedals, and yes, very overlooked...
They usually notice it immediately
We get lots of comments from musicians from other bands who can't believe what they're hearing is coming from only three people.
This pedals are great! I own the Key9 and with the right efx you got very close to the original sounds! I love them ;-) Thanks for the demo 🙂
21:46 , when that sad day comes and the tears start to flow , remember these times, when y'all Rock'd and Roll'd ! - Jesse
The drum part for "No One's At the Park" (17:10) is hypnotic
I gotta say, I picked up a Mel9 and use it like Bill showed in the EHX demo as a backing to guitar (after a hotone acoustic simulator pedal, dry at 100%, wet at ~25%, followed by reverb) and it sounds great. The Cello really shines as an accompaniment imo.
They got the band back together!
I have the C9, love it for song looping. I would totally dig a full blown brass version of these!
I'm a happy owner of a C9, a Key9 and a Mel9. 😁For doing demos on my own, this pedals are really fantasctic as I can't play keyboards but I love blended sounds of guitars and keybords. I usually use only the wet sound from the pedal, and play guitar parts separately
I've the B9 and Mel 9. Fabulous pedals and unique.
Great bass groove on that synth 9 jam. Love it.
It was nice to see Addison back on the show! Hope he's doing well in his recording business.
MEL9 with acoustic is the sound of angels.
