    I tried taking 0 notes for one full semester and ended up doing just as well in terms of grades. I am still not taking notes but I will soon switch to taking notes again because after having tried both methods for a good time, I have found that taking minimal notes is better for me for gaining a deeper understanding of the topic. But I really agree with your idea that not taking notes is great for times when you are very busy.

      Samee , I take minimal notes , bc my class requires it (I'm a younger student) , I usually take my own notes before the test when I have a pretty good understanding of the topic , and I basically just explain the topic to myself as if I were teaching a class the topic , if you do try that my tip is explaining the topic in the most simple way possible as if you were explaining to a child .

    Interesting, I feel the same way. Taking minimal notes to solidify the concepts while doing practice tests / Anki is the way for me. I tried doing super detailed notes but it didn't stick with me. Keeping an open mind to different techniques is the way to go. Perfect vid timing when people are starting to go back to school.
    Editing and filming are getting cleaner! The b-roll is sick!

    Taking too many notes didn’t work out for me (copying verbatim). Taking 0 notes didn’t work for either. I found a happy medium, allowing for me to think while in lecture, but have something to “review” when I don’t know something. I do practice tests these days more, but I still take notes.

    Tbh I find that during lectures, the lecturer is always adding to the information given in my slides, therefore I have to write notes around the ppts since the slides themselves are quite bare. But, as an engineering student, I can see the appeal of not taking any notes since ultimately it's the HW problems, practice questions and application that matter more than the heavy memorization of any notes or formulas. After all, what use of notes is there if you cannot apply your knowledge to different questions? I think notes are probably more useful for theory based subjects like biology (or for annotations) than something like math or physics which dominates my degree. Anyways, great vid as always!! Loved the experimental nature!!

    Hey Josh, I really appreciate you making this video. Seeing all of these "This is the right way" videos made me think of my pen and paper studying as insufficient and counter productive. I kept wasting time and sacrificing marks to try and adapt the "right" ways. When really I just should have been doing what works for me. This breaths a little confidence back into my life. Thank you!

    I really enjoyed this video. I always felt that the “no notes” strategy would work better for fact heavy (assuming a pre-made Anki Deck is available) instead of concept heavy material. Those quick notes to help organize facts, in my experience, always made me feel like I understood the material better. But, it could just be a bias.

    I take “notes” but it’s in a very different way. It’s more so drawing what’s happening and making important annotations of what’s going on. When I’m learning type 3 HSR, I draw what’s going on and I give each cell an outfit. Then I go to the white board and teach it to a “class” (in my head), by re-drawing the whole process. I can memorize it after doing it a few times

    I think there's no reason to not take notes while in class, I find it aids me to keep focused. Anyway, don't know why I watched this video because I relay heavily on notes. And I'm somewhat forced to since we don't use textbooks in my degree, so if I want to review the content I have to take notes in class. Afterwards I don't take many more notes, I mostly read it over and highlight, but occasionally, I do resumes or diagrams, which are time-consuming but can help make things clearer when I'm not quite understanding something.

    When you watched the lecture videos at home did you watch them at regular speed or faster? Also, do you think this method of studying was uncomfortable because you're not use to it, or is it something that can become more comfortable with time?
    I'm looking to try this method at the beginning of this upcoming semester. I'm in undergrad about to start orgo and physics!!
    Thanks alot, love your videos!

    • @yugiohforce1
      @yugiohforce1  3 роки тому +5

      For one, orgo and physics is more about practice problems than notetaking. But also, I think it was uncomfortable more because sometimes you need to organize your thoughts somewhere and not being able to take notes makes that harder. Not something that will necessarily get fixed with time, but maybe will be a little better. At home the speed i watch depends on how easy i think the material is. It ranges from 1.1x to 1.6x.

    Zero notes has always seemed hyperbolic to me. It's one thing to record information word for word, but I believe taking notes is a useful tool as an extension of your brain. What I mean by that is that notes are good when learning a topic, because when you take in information all at once it can be quite chaotic and disorganized. Using paper helps organize these thoughts into a logical sequence of information to which the larger concept/common theme can be drawn from and learned

    This might be a dumb question but is there any way to improve your ability/intuition to take notes on comprehension instead of just writing everything down? In the past, I've been trained to just drill down every single fact and detail and review them rigorously 2-3 days before the test (bio/biochem/med term). This is extremely exhaustive and doesn't produce the results that I want. I'm taking physics and ochem this semester and I don't think my methods will help in those subjects. Do you have any tips/exercise on improving that comprehension ability and knowing what notes to take vs what not to take? (Example notes if you're willing to share!)

    • @tinhyeu5952

    • @tinhyeu5952
      @tinhyeu5952 2 роки тому +1

      @@breats4703 For sure! So the guy who commented suggested that instead of taking normal notes (i.e just writing down what the teacher says), you could format the notes in terms of questions instead. (so for example, if you're learning about photosynthesis, instead of writing down "the two steps of photosynthesis are A and B", you can instead write down "what are the two steps of photosynthesis?" or " What process involves light-dependent reactions and the calvin cycle?". I know it sounds redundant at first, but you're actually training yourself to understand the concepts instead of regurgitating (plus they make great review materials!) You can use Anki (software) for this, which helps you to retain the information in the long run through steady repetition.
      Since I've posed this question, I've been able to refine my note taking by breaking down the lectures after every class. What helped me was realizing that in each lecture, you're really only learning 1-2 new things (3 max!). You need to ask yourself what the big ideas are (i.e I only get to keep 1-2 things from this lecture--which one do I keep?) This makes it so much easier to retain the smaller ideas because they all link back to the big idea. Good luck!
