I used to take notes and LOVED taking down notes, but when I was introduced to Anki on my third year med school, I noticed that I took down notes less...until such a time that I DO NOT take notes at all, even today that I'm preparing for my licensure exam. What's also good is that since I used spaced-rep for studying, my grades went up, and retention was better too. :) how I wish I knew about this study technique before! Anyway, thanks for the informative video! Happy studying :)
That’s so true!! Thank you so much for sharing your own experience transitioning from note-taking to tools like Anki for spaced repetition. I’m glad to hear it’s had a similar impact on your performance!
WOW! I feel like this technique was meant for people like me who retain information better by listening and reviewing instead of taking notes. Another great video keep up the great work!
I've always been on the note taker train and as soon as July comes around, I am thinking about hopping off. I know my time management could use some polishing and note taking is such a time-sink, especially when the benefits of Anki is multifold and staring you in the face. I appreciate you taking the time to show the grind and how people really be fienin' out here; ahaha. #KeepEvolving

It depends on what school you go to. If my all of my professors were efficient and on point in delivering information , why would I care to take notes and go through text book and UA-cam tutorials. On the other hand, tricks being used and not revealing helpful information in solving problems and what is being faced. I actually found TA’s helpful more than professor, they just give it to you and it all then makes sense.

Fellow M1 here (not at Mayo tho lol) and I hopped on Anki since day 1 of med school and never looked back. Big props to those who don't use it haha. That said, I never used AnKing (only zanki pharm) as I was scared that there may not be too much overlap with class. I'm thinking about looking into it this summer but we'll see. It's definitely interesting thinking about how to approach Step 1 as it will most likely be pass fail next year.
Yeah it’s super interesting to think about how we should be approaching step 1 now. I think people just won’t feel too pressured unsuspending the lower-yield cards.
I’m a first year medical student in Sweden. I have to do my own questions for Anki. I do questions based on the syllabus/curriculum/goal description for the course (don’t know how to describe it 😅, we get it from the teacher, it contains the things we need to know for the exam). If you didn’t have access to premade Anki decks, how do you think your study work flow would look like then? ☺️
That’s a great question Amanda! I would probably do something similar where I would make cards based on the high yield topics in my lectures and what my professors say will be on the exam. Making your own cards can be nice because you’re getting an additional rep off studying just by making them!
Loved the vid, been preaching this style for a while now lol. Question though, how does lecturio compare to uworld or bnb in terms of prepping for step and for general m2 use?
I’m glad you liked the video Ricardo! I like lecturio for general M1/M2 use to review topics that may have been confusing in lecture (the video library is really incredible). But I would probably use Uworld or AMBOSS to prepare for step just because those resources are the mainstay for step
Thank you so much! I always see med students just bringing a laptop or an ipad to study while I bring a notebook and yet they retain so much information so this was so helpful to see. I was also curious, do you take notes while watching recorded lectures for the first time (some of my professors don’t post the lecture until a few minutes till class)?
I personally rarely take notes, even when watching recorded lectures. I use tools like Anki and practice questions to assess my understanding and review topics I am learning. It’s a much more active process which is ultimately a better way of having that information stick!
Do you think you can make a video regarding med school and balance? Like having time to spend with family/working out/pursuing hobbies. I’m getting anxiety from all the stuff I hear on the internet about the time med school sucks up.

Who actually tried this and found it helpful ???
no drug dealer but practice question dealer
You could’ve just told us how you did it right off.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND YOU, in one video you say how to take notes in your Ipad and now say no take notes
Some people prefer taking notes so I made a video on how to do this on an iPad. This was initially what I did and some people still find this method of studying helpful. This is a video detailing why I ultimately changed to a no note method of studying. People have different learning preferences and and those preferences can change over time. The goal should be to find what works for you and be willing to experiment with other strategies
