How fast will the 7mm Rem mag go?

- In this video I go to the range with a 7mm Remington Magnum loaded up with the 180 gr ELD-M bullet. We are trying to accomplish two things... Get to 2970 FPS and get a small group. I also bring my 270 Winchester loaded up with some Hammer bullets.

I have been reloading the 7 mm REM Mag since 1975.
High velocity with 175 grain bullets is done with Retumbo, VV-570 and RL-33 !!!
Wish I had that powder
How fast can you get 175-180 bullets with retumbo
3,000 fps in a 26” barrel
@@robertblumer2578 whats the best powder for 160gr? I’m getting 3120 with 160gr cx 71.7gr of retumbo, new brass, 215 primer but in trying to get just a bit more velocity
I get over 3000 with h1000 its temp stable, I save my retumbo for my 28 nosler.
That's a great load. You should be able to match or exceed the 7 PRC, on the rokslide forum they pulled apart a 7 PRC load and figured it looked like RL 26. They loaded up the exact same charge of RL26 as the factory round and it was identical in speed. RL 26 is fast but has a reputation for being volatile. A 1 in 8 twist 7mm RM is at least as good or better than the Hornady round. The new Remington's are also going with a 1 in 8 twist for the 7mm RM.
That is a very impressive group shot! I thought I knew a guy that ran a compressed ram shot Magnum powder that hit 3000 FPS. If you have some of that... Do what you feel comfortable with doing. As always, safety first. Youll get that speed and really good video man! Also, he may have some better luck adding a little bit of jump.
The big different in accuracy in 7mm was changing from bipod to the bag, bipod with hard rubber feet on a crapy uneven bench will make the gun bunch all over the place in the recoil..good recoil management is the key to success (accuracy)
Can't disagree with you. The owner of the rifle prefers a bipod
Great video! Prove him wrong there buddy!
That last group was really impressed
I have a 7rm and am shooting 180 eldm at just under 3000fps. Retumbo, rl26, and n565 are my choices for the 180s. Extremely accurate and devastating on whitetails. As long as you have a fast twist barrel you will have no issues pushing them over 2950
Just need to find RL-26... and Retumbo
@@ReloadingWeatherby finding it is the hardest part of that equation
Looks like a fun day!
It was!
Wow that is some impressive loading and shooting. Keep it up. Try the Nosler 140 gr ballistic tips in your 270. Thanks for sharing.
Not all guns are equal. I have had three 7mags. First I didnt own a chrony but second was a Interterms fancy rifle it had longer then a 24" bbl and shot pretty well. Reliable to 1" with most loads and broke 3k with my 160's. (My preferred) That rifle was gifted to a very good friend as he lusted over its figured stock and nice bluing. I hunted for three or four years until I found another. Same rifle but plain walnut without grip cap or forend tips of first. Anyhow I had to really push to vet solid into 29's. Just past 2950 and thats all I can get with any powder I have tried.
This is something I have seen before. Bottom line is that Some barrels simply are "faster" then others.
Absolutely it comes down to the individual barrel
My 270 loves reloder 22. I usually load around 59-60 grains depending on bullets and have had excellent accuracy with it. I know everyone’s results vary but just wanted to mention it in case you haven’t tried it yet.
I tried it in the next video
One of my 7mm Rem Mag with 1-9T 26” tube pushes the 175 grain NP which has a very long bearing surface @ 3060 fps with no pressure signs.
IMR- 7828,
H-1000 pushers the 180 grain Hybrid @ 3000 fps easily and SD and ES both single digits.
RL-26 or Retumbo will provide higher velocities.
So you have no need for 7mm PRC
Nice! I've got a Remington 700 in 7mm rem mag!
It's the most popular 7mm of all time. An absolutely devastating round on anything in America. I'm partial to my 28 Nosler but I can really appreciate this platform. You pick one of the top big deer rounds
@@Jeff_Seely actually the most popular is the 7mm 08 rem, but it’s still really popular
Yep it is a pretty gun, left handed gun, my brother bought it new in around 82 and was going to trade it for a senduro, so I bought it, killed nice deer in Nw Oklahoma and antelope in panhandle. Brother took it to Colorado on Elk hunt and Moose in Canada in the 80s!
Would love to see a 280 24 inch barrel 140 SBT with 56gr IMR 4831 ✈️
A custom gun builder told me to press down on the top of the scope when shooting groups. It really helps control that muzzle jump and improves accuracy allot.
You do realize that goes against everything we were ever taught, However I'll try that the next time i'm at the range.
You're talking about The Real Gunsmith
@@ReloadingWeatherby I can’t stand that guy.
@@dutch9357
Good thing he's the "real gunsmith." Let him tell it, everyone else is incompetent or fraudulent, compared to his wealth of knowledge, and decades of experience. He has very little good to say about anything new in guns and cartridges, (other than the ones he built and wildcatted) and even less to say about the noted manufacturers; having called them "liars" in some of his uploads.
His curmudgeonly, "Get off my lawn!" attitude is a bit tiresome too. Otherwise, I'm sure he's a peach of a guy. 🙁
@@bustabass9025 I mean he’s not really wrong. 300 prc, 7mm PRC, 6.5creedmoor 6.8 western will not replace the .300win mag or 7rem mag anytime soon. He tells it like it is, I mean is he wrong saying that people are shooting cartridges way past their original intended ranges? He knows how to build rifles, how to reload properly etc… he may seem like he’s a very cocky person but he knows a thing or 2
You know. I always see guys use their calipers to measure groups because they're "more accurate" and then they don't even measure them accurately. Instead of guessing where center to center is measure from edge of the group to the further edge and then subtract .284 for 7mm. That's how you get a truly accurate measurement.
I like that rifle. The browning
It's accurate
It's a great gun, I've loved mine!
H4831/sc is my favorite powder for 7mm mag. Your accurate load is very close to my accurate load with 162g ELD-X.
7 Rem Mag, accuracy load is with 162-168g with 71g of Retumbo with fed 215s at 3100 fps on a 26" barrel
My rifle shoots a charge of RL 25 & 175 eld-x in a nice accuracy node @ 3050 fps (roughly, there is a decent temperature variance w/ rl-25 in my experience), over a magneto speed, out of a 24 bbl.
My buddy just found some 175 eld-x for me, but RL-25 doesn't seem to exist anymore.
7 Rem mag holds 4.5g more powder than the 7 PRC.
28" 7 Rem mag shoots the 160-162g at 3200 fps with Retumbo and Fed 215's.
Yea but PRC is more efficient case design
Despite the velocity accuracy wise adi here in Australia recommends 2217 which is your h1000 equivalent not the slowest not the fastest but most accurate but if you could get 3000fps which is possible with 175 grain would it still group nice is the question . It seems 160 grain is the sweet weight for this calibre
I use fed 215 m primers, 61.5 grs. IMR 4831 and hornady brass and get .3 groups all day long with nosler accubonds and sirra game kings and federal fusions and berger bullets
Nice
Ole trusty 7 rem mag gonna make those prc cry 😂 and what else is funny the 300 win will basically do the same to 300 prc
I didn’t realize 7mm rem mag was that fast. I was debating between rem mag and prc down the road. I don’t think I need the prc after seeing this.
Get a 26 inch barrel and it will most likely match the 7 PRC
I've got both. Get the PRC if you have neither
Retumbo works great for 180s
Ever use absolute hammer bullets? Thinking of a load for 30-06 but absolute hammer need to be reload little different
I haven't tried them yet...I would like to
@Reloading Weatherby let u know what I come up with. Got the 151 gr
Need H1000 if you want those numbers.
H1000 😊
Yep 70gr.
Use some 140 grain bullets next, just a couple to see please.
He hunts with the 140 gr. They are going over 3300 FPS.
@@ReloadingWeatherby that's what I use and they work great
What bullet do you use?
@@JasonGuymon usually ballistic tip boat tail, but with the last couple of years I take whatever I can get my hands on. Amazing how a shortage will end being picky.
@@GrouchyOscar-cx6df Haha I'm in the same boat
About 110 km/ hrs in my truck
Any pressure signs?
None
@@ReloadingWeatherby nice 👍 basically 300win mag factory ammo energy but with a much better BC
Use your micrometer or caliper and measure just above the belt. About 2mm, ive had to use a Larry willis die for that issue. I use 180gr bergers and they shoot fantastic Thanks for the vid
What in the world is that scope so high for
Not mine...
Q: How fast will the 7mm Rem mag go?
A: Not as fast as a 7mm Weatherby!!! 😅
Very true
@@ReloadingWeatherby
Keep shooting & posting your videos buddy!!!! Happy hunting this fall.
@@ReloadingWeatherby Hey bud. Did you see Weatherby just released the Mark V "Live Wild" edition. The 7mm Wby comes with a 1:9" twist barrel.
@@hawkeye4497 I saw that!
@@ReloadingWeatherby Great move on their part.

We are shooting a 180 grain in this video
@@ReloadingWeatherby Thats cool mine is most accurate with 175 Remington core locks! Around 1.5 inches high at 100yds and dead on at 300 yds! On a good day, thats me lol I can group three rds. Size of a quarter!
@@ricknone4686 1.5" high at 100 yards and dead on at 300 yards? A 220 Swift at 4000 fps can't even do that. Or was that a typo and meant dead on at 200?
Back 10-15 thousandths off of the lands, and use either Retumbo or R-26. You’ll achieve 2,970 with 180s.
I think we will get it with RL-22, if I could find RL-26.... I'm sure we could easily get 2970
I think you will get it with RL22 also. Increase in increments 0.3gr and watch the pressure maybe? Giving yourself a little bit of jump is probably a very decent idea. I believe you'll hit over 3000!
Slower than my 7STW or 7RUM
I run compressed load imr 7828 + 175 gr, 3000 fps says my chrony (24" barrel)
Thanks for sharing!
@@ReloadingWeatherby no problem. I use win primers, 68 grains, get 3 shots inside a dime @100 yds. it is a medium barrel. maybe will be a good recipe for you.
