Thanks to this gentleman I'm just now passing from reloader to an actual hand loader. When I first started watching, I had no idea how take Randy. He was kicking me all over the place and exposing my complete ignorance. Every video I watched, made me mad at myself for buying into all the hype for every new thing that came down the line. I've spent an embarrassing amount of money trying to be good at my hobby. Finally, I just admitted he was right, started over, followed his advice for proper hand loading and shot a .325 5 shot group out of a bone stock Weatherby Vanguard in 7 RM. I'm no sniper, so I thought it was just luck, until I did it several more times under various conditions. His methods just work.
Randy is not only a MASTER Gunsmith and rifle builder but a MASTER Hand loader too, I can’t say that I’m surprised, What I’d give to spend a year working or him and looking over his shoulder!!!
Finding the best cartridge overall length for your specific hunting loads is limited by the length of the magazine and throat. It's a time and test routine that I thoroughly enjoy, just like you. When the magic recipe is finally done, I will always stick with it from now on. It's permanently recorded in my book of ballistics for future reference. My stainless steel Remington is all that I need for anything in North America using the 160 grain partition bullets for a point blank range of 300 yards. It will reach alot farther, but this is my maximum range for shooting at any game animal. IMR 4831 and 7828 have yielded the same results, with 5/8 in. Groups at 100 yds. This is alot better than the 1 .4 in groups from the factory ammunition groups.
I've long been suspicious of the facts about factory loads of this cartridge as Randy outlines here. I had the good fortune of purchasing a Remington Sendero a number of years ago. It was and is by most standards a very accurate rifle. About three years ago, a good friend caught my interest with "precision" reloading. Most would think all the work was ridiculous to go through doing, with a hunting type of rifle. One of the steps he showed me was seating the bullets out to the lands. This, of course, added to the overall length of the cartridge, which in turn means more powder capacity. Switching to slower powders, the rifle easily yielded 3100 fps+ with 160 gr. bullets, an incredible 3496 fps with 140 gr. Accubonds, and 3588 fps with 120 gr Nosler BT. I used a chronograph for the velocities and the brass remained "good-to-go", with no extractor marks, expanded primer pockets, etc. I really think the factories download a lot of the older cartridges so they can sell a newer, "faster" version that burns more powder.
I think it's fairly common practice to load lower charges to avoid the potential lawsuit of blowing up a gun in someone's hands. Problem is they go much lower than what is necessary to be safe.
Thank you for the information. I'm getting ready to start a 7mm rem mag build using 160 gr bullets. Because of temperature sensibility I was thinking of trying H4831 although I wish it burned a little slower. After listening to you, I did a little math and realized I'd just be better off trying out 7828. Thank you again for sharing your lifetime of knowledge.
thank you for your advice . I have spoken with you several times about that particular cartrige . I am loading much more accurate ammo now and with much better velocities ! great video that cleared up many aspects on the 7mm rem mag ! Thank you ! and I mean that !
For my Sako 85 7mm rem mag i bought a 20 pack of the Norma 150 gr. The ogive is 380 tho short of the lands in the rifle. I also bought 20 Federal 150 gr, and these are around 170 tho short of my rifle lands. I reload my own now 150 gr Partition 30 tho back of the lands. I'm glad i saw this video. You always have great advice! Thank you!
Thanks for the Info everyone in the Family got a Trump 2020 cap from me for Christmas. Every time I hear u talk I want to shut down my clinic for a couple weeks just to fly out and follow you around and learn from you directly.
It's the same thing with the 28 Nosler too. The COAL is severely shortened to get it magazine fed. I decided to use a single fed action and ran the freebore out to from 181 out to almost 300 and I am able to push a 190gr VLD to almost 3200fps using 90gr of US869. Now those kinds of number are only possible by running the heel of the bullet right at the shoulder/neck junction to get that compressed load with 90grains. And it is a one-hole rifle to boot! It's my favorite magnum and I really love shooting it. It packs a good wallop so I run a 4-port brake on that rifle and it has the recoil similar to a 12gauge bird load. Thanks Randy and Mrs Selby for the time and effort in producing these videos and God bless the Selby's!
I remember getting a load from a very old reloading Manuel. 7mm Rem Mag. IMR 4831. Nosler 175 gr partition bullet. I won’t say powder weight but I’ll say the new books are WAY UNDER on what the old book said to do. That load was incredible! Several times I could put 3 shots in one jagged hole. Rem 700 action. I just retired and want to rebarrel the ole 700
Thank you for a great vid, I have a 7 mm mag still in the box, I subscribe to learn, and this vid sets you on a good course in 7 mag. Also, I talk ethics and bullet placement and type when I can. That is what most impressed me most, giving full acknowledgement of your expertise.
Got my Trump hat wired every day appreciate the advice on The 7 mm mag I hunt Whitetail in North Carolina mountains but you gave me some good ideas thanks and God bless
When I first started hunting in California in 1993, my experienced friends recommended the Remington Custom Model 700 KS in 7mm mag (stainless barrel and Kevlar stock). It's off their custom line, which I think means it was assembled start to finish by one builder. I put a Leupold VariX3 3.5x10 scope on it. I love the gun and it has always been extremely accurate with factory loads (Federal Premium). I've taken a 200-lb. wild boar, a couple mule deer and a caribou with it (one shot each). Now I'm looking forward to hand loading my own ammunition and really getting it dialed in.
Great video!! 7mmRM is definitely my favorite cartridge to load. 168gr Nosler accubond long range at 2965fps with Winchester brass .025" off the lands has been giving me 2" groups at 550 yards. Unbelievable cartridge!!!
Please consider reviewing the 308 Winchester cartridge for one of your next videos. Us East Coast guys don't need those big cartridges were not shooting out over a plane or from a mountain top to a mountain top. Sometimes we're shooting 52 200 yards max. Thank you very much, Echo.
Love your videos and i thank you for making them. I have been reloading for about 35 years and have learned a lot over that time. I especially liked your die set up video. And will apply that the next time i sit down to load. Have always set up the way rcbs recommended but in all fairness that was the only information i and others had to go by. Keep the videos coming.
I can remember all my dad and I still use the 4831 Hodges for the 7 mm and also the 270. 71 grains for 120 Sierra pro hunter. And 59 grains of H4831 in the 270 with the Sierra game king bullet.
Thank you for your time Miss Cathay with out your time and effort I don’t know if we would have the chance to learn so much. Thank you stay blessed and healthy.
Thanks for the info! Im about to pick up a Bergara in 7 rem mag and will definitely be reloading. I currently reload for my 338 RUM and the reloading manuals load that cartidge very short too. I've found a large increase in velocity and accuracy by pushing the bullet out to 3.75 instead of the 3.59 the book recommends.
Hey Randy, I love your videos, I was wondering if you could name your very favorite powders for the following cartridges; 25-06 Remington, 257 Weatherby, 264 Winchester mag, 270 Winchester, 270 Weatherby, 7MM Remington magnum, 300 Winchester magnum, and 300 Weatherby mag, I sure would appreciate your recommendations, and I love your hat. Thank you sir.
Thank you sir for the wealth of experience. Thank you. Found this video, after struggling the last to days to work up loads for the Savage 116 7mm Rem Mag. It may be that the rifle is so lightweight and it kicks like a mule, and a stiff trigger, I just need to shoot it more, I keep getting flyers. Multiple tight paired shots, and third flies off. Nosler 150Gr Silvertips, IMR 7828, WLRM, New nosler ready to load brass. It should be ok for hunting, I just like seeing more consistent tight groups. TRUMP 2020
@The Real Gunsmith It would be really cool if you made a video walking through and showing your reloading process for belted Magnum cartridges. I just order a single stage reloading kit, along with a few other things to complete it out. I’m going to start with trying to work up a load for my 7mm Rem Mag.
I’m putting together an all weather Ruger M77 7mm mag. Been in storage for over 10 years. Field stripped and lubed her up this week and installed the scope rings. I have a Leupold 4-12x 40mm with adjustable objective. I am the original owner. I will be hand loading.
We've always run 7828 in our 7mm Rem mag rifles. It's what I always start with on any 7mm Rem mag. In an old Savage we had we pushed 140 grain Barnes TSX bullets to 3280fps with no pressure signs and groups averaged under 3/4 moa.
I go with the tried & true older powders like H870, Imr 4831& IMR 4350. The older RCBS handloading book I have still.publishes maxx loads and not the Gen Z pussified loads listed today. You can load a 7mm rem mag a lot hotter than the new loading manuals say you can. With 175 gr nosler partitions I load 63.0 grs of IMR4350 at 2975 fps out of a 24 inch barrel. The Remington 9 .5 M primer is used. With 150 gr Swift scirroccos I load 67.0 hrs of IMR 4350 with the same primer at 3180 fps. Both loads shoot sub MOA groups out of a 9.5 to 1 twist tube. Have never tried 4831 in my 7 but H870 ( the slowest burner) works awesome.
Good info ,I just reloaded some lastnight some lastnight with 175 gr eld-x bullets and H 4350 ,at 3.29 col I'm gonna try the same bullet with imr 4831 and see how they shoot out of my bergara . Oh and I love your trump hat sir .
Always good listening to you have learned a lot from listening to you and I appreciate everything you post to help educate less knowledgeable individuals such as myself.
Big magazine boxes allow you to chase the throat as well. I have a 28 Nosler, but I want to build a 7mm Remington magnum, just to do it. Appreciate your videos Randy.
I use the 7 remington mag mostly because I had a new 700 remington in 300 win mag and re barreled it with a rw hart barrel with a break and it easily will shoot under 1/4 “ at 100 yards. Hardly used it for over 20 years but I’m starting to use it because I’m getting very particular about my bucks. Might as well use it.
Velocity is easy. Stuff more powder behind lighter bullets. ACCURACY and CONSISTENCY are the difficult aspects of handloading. I've loaded a number of rounds for the 7mm(both mag and .280Rem) long with great success. I also use the LEE factory crimp die to anchor them in which seems to tighten up the SD's in almost everything I load. I also use 7828 in the 7mm Mag with 160gr Nosler Partition.
I have never owned a 7mm Rem Mag. I have shot quite a few, even took a deer and elk with a borrowed 7mm RM. Have a used Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 7mm Rem Mag, can't wait to see how it stacks up against the new 6.8 Western, which I am also buying as soon as the rifles come out in July. The older I get, the more appeal a light, short action rifle, in a caliber that has true long range capability, to keep long shots ethical, has. Thus, 7mm Rem Mag, 6.8 Western.
Interesting that your 7mm Rem Mag and the 7mm Rem Mag as delivered in factory rifles and ammunition are often separated by enough to be two completely different cartridges.
@therealgunsmith Is the brand powder you are using IMR 7828? If so, Are you using regular 7828 or 7828 SSC (Super Short Cut)? In my 7mm Rem Mag I'm currently using Hornady 162 gr. ELDX hunting bullets, 69 grains of Retumbo and my C.O.A.L. measured from the ogive with Hornady's Comparator tool is 3.728. My average velocity with three cold bore shots is 3,088 fps. Do you think it would be worth trying the 7828 to squeeze a little more velocity out of it? I also shoot a 168 gr. Berger VLD Hunting bullet and am at around 2,950 fps with the same C.O.A.L. and also 69 grains of Retumbo. Thanks!
I agree with you about Norma brass. It's wonderful stuff. But I am also extremely happy about Alpha brass. I find them comparable to Lapua which to me is exceptional. I also think weatherby is great brass. Very good video thank you much my friend.
Hey Randy need help!!! I am a veteran from Afghanistan&Iraq and have always had a profound interest in rifles and done several gun repairs have realized I now have options to go to school would like to be a gunsmith any school u highly recommend? Any advice would be appreciated Thank You
There are many reputable gunsmithing schools. Of course I recommend Trinidad State Junior College in CO, where I went. I had the best of the best, with small class sizes. Find the gunsmithing colleges in areas you'd like to be in, and do a lot of research. Good luck and thanks so much for your service!
thanks Randy this cleared some suspicion about 7828 ssc and the 7 I noticed Nosler cut 2 grains off the 160 gr. bullet. I hope to have something in the ups mail soon.
Ironically I just tested some loads with 7828 using Nos 150g ABLR and Barnes 145LRX in my ols Rem 700ADL converted to classic stock with Factory DBM. Previously was using some Barnes 160 XLC(the blue coated ones) and 70+grains of R22. Still have some of them left too.
Good tip on IMR7828! That is what I use up here in Alaska for hunting with Barnes TTSX and Nozler brass. Isn't a small velocity standard deviation more important than getting highest velocity?
Shooting thin skin game such as deer, no more than three hundred yards, is ideal with a 7 MM Mag. Any thing bigger than deer, I would use a lever action rifle with heavier bullets like the .444 or the .45/70. If I were hunting Grizzlies, and I had to, I pick either a double or bolt action rifle in largest African Calibers that I could get. But I would seek your advise, before stepping in to the woods. And I hope Donald Trump clears these bull ship charges and saves America, making it great again. Your advice is well earned. Thank you for being a Pioneer.
Does anyone know why Nosler brass wasn’t mentioned? I find it expensive but finish is the best and it’s always trimmed and deburred perfectly. The weights seem to be very consistent too. I am sure there is a reason he didn’t mention it but I’d like to know. Thanks
Be interesting to know your preferred barrel length, twist rate and outer bore diameter. Also your preferred trigger weight. Thanks for post. Go Trump!!!
There are only a few powders that aren't temperature senstive. Keep the cartridges out of the sun and heat. [Think insulated containers.] Thanks for watching.
I'm going to start working a load up using RETUMBO with 175gr fusion bullets. I'll see what I can get out of these. I was looking for 160gr and couldn't find any.
My 2019 Remington 700ADL (7mm Rem Mag) has a magazine that won't accept 3.600". I might be able to squeeze in 3.450 but haven't tried yet. I tried loading a dummy round with OAL of 3.6 but the bullet just pushed into the case and I was left with a round that was 3.374" long. My hand load OAL is 3.371". My average velocity with 60.0 grains of RL22 and a 160 grain Accubond is 2910 fps. I could load considerably hotter but groups open up any time I get beyond 2950 fps. I live at 5900' in elevation. Stats were taken on a 45 degree day with 28% humidity. At 3.371" OAL, I get groups of 3/4" on average....limited mostly by my ability.
Not a top load but super accurate in my rem700 59.1 IMR 4451 using Nosler 150 p/n28450. Any thoughts? Love your videos. Thank you elevating my understanding
Rem 700, brownings= Stock factory, bedded, bbl freefloated, Gentry muzzle break 120g Barnes TTSX, 120g Nosler ballistic tip, 72-73g of R#22,Rem case, CCI 250 seals the day, 1/4" groups when you seat the bullet to just barely kiss the lands, and the ballistic tip is a tough bullet, jump the 120 TTSX .050 from the lands 140g, Rem brass, Rem 9 1/2, 140g Nosler BT, Partition, Accubond, barely touching the lands has always given me 3/8" groups 65-66g of IMR 4350 fps 140g Barnes TTSX, seated .050 off of the lands, 67g of R#19, Win brass, Fed 215, 3300 fps 150g Nosler ballistic tip, Max load of R#25, Rem brass, WIN Mag primer, 3250 fps. Randy, thank you for telling us about the IMR 7828, that I use in my 7 STW. Keep the copper out of your barrel! Most barrels need de coppering every 20-30 rounds. Best wishes in your reloading!
It requires lenghtening the magazine box inside dimension and throat to the desired depth. I find that most "smiths" are no longer taught this type of gunsmithing, which is a loss for them and their clients. Thanks for watching.
On my 7 magnum sendero 2, as I've stated before, I shoot 7mag vld trophy gold Berger Rounds. The weapon is new sometimes the shell's get stuck. I have to pull the shell out, even if I have cleaned the weapon before shooting, what's the problem. Thanks for your wisdom.
Are these reloads or factory ammo? Without knowing the dimensions of your ammo and chamber id say that your brass is too small for your chamber and is growing....a lot! You are flirting with case head separation if thats the situation. Jmo
So help me out, I measured my maximum overall length of cartridge with the bullet I am using in my gun to be 3.375". I'm using a monolithic bullet and the mfg. recommends the bullet be seated no closer than .050" to the lands. So if I seat my bullets so that I have a 3.325" COAL that's .140" longer than the mfg. has in their load data. So I have a lot of extra case capacity, how do I proceed to add powder without crossing over into a dangerous situation?
Craig LaCount , If your lengthening your bullet seating for hunting, be sure the new length cartridges fit in your mag because many won’t and that can cause failure to feed and cause a dangerous situation ie. bear or cat charge. You’ll have to work up your loads starting below the safe max recommended by the powder manufacturer and increase by a 1/2 a grain each time. I usually try 3 shot groups at 100 yards with 1/2 grain charge increases watching for pressure signs on your cases and primer. You’ll find that your rifle may not like full maximum charges and your groups will start to suffer, just back off a 1/2 grain or so until it shoots good and find the sweet spot for your rifle. Full max loads will also shorten barrel life. Hope this helps
TheIrongutz thank you and I do realize this. Most long action guns are going to have a magazine length of 3.340 or slightly longer because this is SAMMI spec for a 300 win mag. That’s the largest of the long action cartridges before they go into extra long actions. So yes I have the ability to go to 3.325” but doubt that I’d be anywhere close to 3.590 as mentioned in the video. Would have to have a custom magazine and the throat of my chamber would have to be custom. These kinds of things are not available on stock guns.
Randy this is extremely informative that being said im getting a Weatherby Vanguard in 300 wby mag i sure would appreciate your insight on best all round powder for this also im only into the hunting projectiles around 180 to 200 grain range thank you kindly Sir!
Hey Randy, love the videos. What is your opinion on the new sierra gamechanger bullet design? I’ve seen all your videos on bullet construction and it seems like that bullet has a tougher jacket than most of the “ballistic tip” style bullets, any experience working with them? Thanks
This may be a dumb question sir but is the .0005 case head expansion also applicable for pistol rounds, say a .357 magnum in a Henry lever action rifle

You are right. 7 mm has very wicked penetration as does the 264 win mag.

Wow... so interesting thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge
Randy, I would love to see you give some info on the 6.5 cals. Mainly the 6.5X284 or 264 winchester
7mmRM. Is a very capable round. My first all around rifle, a good choice for a single do it all gun.
Thank you again Randy
Really appreciate your sharing good information...
Knowledge...thanks Randy for sharing. This will definitely take me back to the drawing board with my 7 Mag loads!
And Trump 2020 all the way sir!
Thanks!
You won't get more velocity from the 7828. I do not use SSC, except in medium size cases where it works well.
I would love to hear your opinion on the 30/06
I agree with you about Norma brass. It's wonderful stuff. But I am also extremely happy about Alpha brass. I find them comparable to Lapua which to me is exceptional. I also think weatherby is great brass. Very good video thank you much my friend.
Love your hat Sir!
What is your opinion on the claim that the 280 ackley improved being on par or just shortly behind the 7mm magnum?
The .280 AI lacks 150-200 feet approaching the 7 Rem. Mag. It's all about case capacity.
Thanks for watching!
Very interesting. Some of the load data I have read puts the velocity a little closer. But you have much more experience than I.
GreatvVideo.
Always used 7828 in my 7mm never felt the need to look at any other powder
I brought,my first 7mag at gert bros Denver 1978 win THIS IS A GREAT ROUND🌠🐯🐯
Hey Randy need help!!! I am a veteran from Afghanistan&Iraq and have always had a profound interest in rifles and done several gun repairs have realized I now have options to go to school would like to be a gunsmith any school u highly recommend? Any advice would be appreciated
Thank You
There are many reputable gunsmithing schools.
I agree. I'm using 7977 powder. Very clean.
Thanks for sharing your videos and keep them coming please.
Huh???
I have a 7 remington magnum sendero 2. What do I need to do in order for my 7 magnum sendero 2 .To get in 3ooos 3200.Thanks
see above for my similar experience
Next time I go to Yellowstone I'm going to bring my M70 7Mag to you for a massage & some load advice.
Does anyone know why Nosler brass wasn’t mentioned? I find it expensive but finish is the best and it’s always trimmed and deburred perfectly. The weights seem to be very consistent too. I am sure there is a reason he didn’t mention it but I’d like to know.
Thanks
Nosler is made by norma usually. In some rare cases they use another manufacturer.
ben shelton ok
Thanks
It is overpriced by about 400%.
Be interesting to know your preferred barrel length, twist rate and outer bore diameter. Also your preferred trigger weight.
Thanks for post.
Go Trump!!!
Love you keep up the good work.
Great video. Would you do a video on which powders are temperature sensitive and which are not?
There are only a few powders that aren't temperature senstive. Keep the cartridges out of the sun and heat. [Think insulated containers.]
Thanks for watching.
Thank you!
I'm going to start working a load up using RETUMBO with 175gr fusion bullets. I'll see what I can get out of these. I was looking for 160gr and couldn't find any.
Amazing information here. Thanks
Hmm, ok. How much free bore or jump do you have with your 7mm rwm mag?
"Free bore" and "jump" are two different subjects. I seat my bullets .020-.030 off throat.
Thanks for watching.
Not a top load but super accurate in my rem700 59.1 IMR 4451 using Nosler 150 p/n28450. Any thoughts? Love your videos. Thank you elevating my understanding
Way under the capability of the cartridge.
Thanks for watching.
Rem 700, brownings= Stock factory, bedded, bbl freefloated, Gentry muzzle break
120g Barnes TTSX, 120g Nosler ballistic tip, 72-73g of R#22,Rem case, CCI 250 seals the day, 1/4" groups when you seat the bullet to just barely kiss the lands, and the ballistic tip is a tough bullet, jump the 120 TTSX .050 from the lands
140g, Rem brass, Rem 9 1/2, 140g Nosler BT, Partition, Accubond, barely touching the lands has always given me 3/8" groups
65-66g of IMR 4350 fps
140g Barnes TTSX, seated .050 off of the lands, 67g of R#19, Win brass, Fed 215, 3300 fps
150g Nosler ballistic tip, Max load of R#25, Rem brass, WIN Mag primer, 3250 fps. The 154g Hornady SP is an ELK bullet and shoots holes through both shoulders of LARGE hogs on boadside shots.
160g-168g, 70-71g of Retumbo, fed 215, Rem brass
WORK UP TO THESE LOADS IN YOUR RIFLE!
Randy, thank you for telling us about the IMR 7828, that I use in my 7 STW.
Keep the copper out of your barrel! Most barrels need de coppering every 20-30 rounds.
Best wishes in your reloading!
What's involved with lengthening the throat on a factory browning abolt 7mm rem mag? Is this something most gunsmiths would be able to do?
It requires lenghtening the magazine box inside dimension and throat to the desired depth. I find that most "smiths" are no longer taught this type of gunsmithing, which is a loss for them and their clients.
Thanks for watching.
@@TheRealGunsmith Are you not a fan of the 7mm rem mag as it is specified by SAAMI?
On my 7 magnum sendero 2, as I've stated before, I shoot 7mag vld trophy gold Berger Rounds. The weapon is new sometimes the shell's get stuck. I have to pull the shell out, even if I have cleaned the weapon before shooting, what's the problem. Thanks for your wisdom.
Are these reloads or factory ammo?
Without knowing the dimensions of your ammo and chamber id say that your brass is too small for your chamber and is growing....a lot! You are flirting with case head separation if thats the situation. Jmo
Great content.
Try ADG brass with the 7RM, definitely high quality brass that’s up there with Norma and Lapua.
Any thoughts on alco aluminum tip bullets for 7mm. Can't find a cut apart of them and only one photo of them in bullet gelatin.
I am catching up on all of your videos and just happen to have the same hat on.
Great info thank you!!
Randy, please do a video about the 7mm Mashburn.
Thanks fo a clear explanation.
Nice hat randy! Take care of yourself
THANK YOU SIR!
Hey Randy, love the videos. What is your opinion on the new sierra gamechanger bullet design? I’ve seen all your videos on bullet construction and it seems like that bullet has a tougher jacket than most of the “ballistic tip” style bullets, any experience working with them? Thanks
They have a thicker jacket, very accurate. Have yet to take game with them. Maybe this fall.
Thanks for watching.
If u dont mind would you make a video and touch on the 338 allen express and give us some insight on the cartidge ?
Not at this time. I feel the interest here is too narrow. I will take it under advisement, though.
Thanks for watching and good shooting.
Could you speak on the 338 Lapua
It is a fine target, snipping or hunting cartridge.
Thanks for watching.
Randy, what is your opinion on the nosler accubond and balistic tip bullets for deer sized game under 300 yds
Great options.
Thanks for watching and good shooting!
This may be a dumb question sir but is the .0005 case head expansion also applicable for pistol rounds, say a .357 magnum in a Henry lever action rifle
