I rode this with Pathfinder Pro, without silicon however, still clogged super quick with 42s on a Diverge. Hike a bike was the only option in the mud consistency we had later in the day.
Very impressive. Last two races I did really cramped up in my legs so bad. 😣😩 just pushing hard , gravel so hard when we push hard but the severe leg spasm cramping is just killing me. I am not young 56 and a half
Fantastic bike control....👌 But once the thread packed up with mud, it would be impossible to keep propelling forward. Cyclocross tire might have been better suited. Assuming the whole route is more or less in similiar condition.
Someone needs to tell the announcer's that in mud you actually want a slightly narrower slick tire. All the knobs would do is cause the mud to cake on more until it begins to interfere with the clearance between the frame. Would not help traction at all and in fact would hurt it.
I think the 9mi mud you all were talking about was when I rode in 2015- that stuff was mind blowing, how slick and sticky and heavy it was. I didn't get off my bike on a single climb all day, but the second you faltered or slowed too much on the mud, you were done.
Why is this called "gravel" racing? This is mud racing. I've seen other videos of "gravel" races, featuring mud slogs like this, ponds of water to have to ride through, as well as rock garden trails that could be featured in mountain bike trail or enduro racing. In these days of bicycle specialty manufacturing, where we have XC, trail, enduro, downhill, and even bikes specially engineered for mtb parks, what does it really mean to designate a race as "gravel"? Just curious.
Gravel really just means unpaved roads. Since they are on a bunch of under maintained farm roads in Kansas, it gets like this when it's wet. If they did the ride later in the season, I imagine it would be fine, but they would then need to deal with the full heat of summer.
Mountain biking requires mountains and single track. Kansas has neither. MTBs are way too slow for this kind of racing and lack drops and hoods to alternate positions on the bike.
I have to think her multi day epic with Hailey Batten, which they won💪🏆. Had to help her, with not only the physical but the mental side. All these top 5 are just machines, Sofia just was the best today. Thank you Flo Sports and your sponsors, for taking Cycling coverage to a whole new plain. This is like a Dakar type coverage without the Carbon footprint of the Tour. Chapeau 🎩👏💯💪🌻
Guy in the blue seemed like he purposely tried to force her off to the side then sped up hard to try and pass again. Affectively brake checking that jerk and getting going again was a good call.
That was a rash, childish thing for him to do. I get it, the conditions are frustrating, but come on. Thankfully she didn't get hurt. I'm sure she's dealt with that kind of asshattery before.
It looked to me like he was making room for her by getting out of the way just as she was passing. So just a miscommunication. But we wont know unless we talk to both riders.
She's a mtbr then she downgraded to gravel bike riding. For me gravel bike riding is a stepping stone to riding xc. When you're riding xc you don't go gravel bike riding anymore. That's just backwards.
Pro MTB’r who doesn’t know how to clear mud out of her cleats by banging the shoe sole against the pedal while mounted or scrapping it in the grass/bush next to the road.
This makes the finishing avg speeds of 21 mph even more impressive.
If the wind blows from the right direction, it lifts you up and you can maintain your momentum.
The guy who won the XL race (350 miles) had over a 17 mph average. That’s bananas.
That mud is so exhausting - you almost go anaerobic just trying to stay upright. Brutal!
What a Beautiful sport
Looks like my local trails for 10 months of the year 😅
Might want to consider moving.
Specialized Pathfinder pro is the tire for this. Knobs only serve to collect more mud.
Also, spray tire with silicon before ride.

such great coverage thanks so much

Fantastic effort of everyone
Thanks for sharing
Crazy conditions! She’s actually done well there. 🚵♀️

i was really motivated to try Unbound next year and then I saw this video... lol
Most “ultra” endurance events are just “ultra” lame.
This is an average winter ride in the Uk gravel scene lol! 😊
oh yea. i ate it on that same road at mile 165-167. got up and kept riding!

Don't mind riding through that stuff, but hate cleaning the bike afterward.
Unfortunately those tyres (specialized pathfinders) are hopeless in mud
was colin racing
RIP Mo.
Perfect conditions for flat pedals and fixie straps
Why is nobody using mudguard or asssaver ? 😮
Gravel race? More like Sludge race!
OMG the cleats 🤣
amazing....treck....
Amazing.
I’d have I’ve subbed for a month just to watch Unbound but not $150 when most of the races don’t show in 🇬🇧
dude couldnt say camel back? caught himself and said hydration pack. lol my bottles are now hydration tubes
the way she uncleated almost immediately is impressive
Ouch!!!
Frankie, you fighting a cold?
Dutch Mafia rules !

This section would be easy with some sort of flying machine.
Can anyone remind me the name of the male commentator again?
Yeah that section was nasty! Had to walk a lot. Just rode it earlier while it was still raining...

Not so,I suspect he thought she was coming through on the right.

Doing this race is worth probably 60 dollars, not 200 and a lottery.
Looks miserable this year
DIRTY KANZA !!!
Donnut style
❤
This makes me think the UCI hravel race is better
Just what I like about gravel grinding....NOTHING !!!
Yup the reason for the name Dirty Kanza… duh

MTBers drive their trucks or Subarus 2 hours to ride for one hour gravel cyclist ride 6 hours to get to the trails.
Great but not for me
feat of bike handling...(riding on flat dirt road, almost falls over 10 secs later)...continue to walk with bike
you do it then if its so easy
@@yoloswaggins372 yeah I was wondering why this dude was talking smack....this is crazy hard
@@yoloswaggins372 hello SJW, i've been doing it like her at 10 yrs old...now it would be much better than that
Dude....you don't know anything about riding in thick mud with gravel tires clearly
Eat mud!
lmao bro

Ha ha. Id put a lot of money on her knowing exactly how to clear her cleats. 😀
You could do that here until the cleat or pedal broke, the mud would have remained, think peanut butter super glue concrete.
Gravel racing gets funnier and funnier.
