Prior to the establishment of Glasnevin Cemetery, Irish Catholics had no cemeteries of their own in which to bury their dead and, as the repressive Penal Laws of the eighteenth century placed heavy restrictions on the public performance of Catholic services, it had become normal practice for Catholics to conduct a limited version of their own funeral services in Protestant churchyards or graveyards. This situation continued until an incident at a funeral held at St. Kevin's Churchyard in 1823 provoked public outcry when a Protestant sexton reprimanded a Catholic priest for proceeding to perform a limited version of a funeral mass. The outcry prompted Daniel O'Connell, champion of Catholic rights, to launch a campaign and prepare a legal opinion proving that there was actually no law passed forbidding praying for a dead Catholic in a graveyard. O'Connell pushed for the opening of a burial ground in which both Irish Catholics and Protestants could give their dead dignified burial.Glasnevin Cemetery was consecrated and opened to the public for the first time on 21 February 1832. The first burial, that of eleven-year-old Michael Carey from Francis Street in Dublin,[3] took place on the following day in a section of the cemetery known as Curran's Square. The cemetery was initially known as Prospect Cemetery, a name chosen from the townland of Prospect, which surrounded the cemetery lands. Besides the famous interred at Glasnevin, nearly 800,000 people have been buried in Glasnevin in unmarked mass graves due to the death toll from the Great Famine of the 1840s and a later cholera epidemic.Originally covering nine acres of ground, the area of the cemetery has now grown to approximately 124 acres. This includes its expansion on the southern side of the Finglas Road with the section called St. Paul's. The option of cremation has been provided since March 1982. Glasnevin Cemetery remains under the care of the Dublin Cemeteries Committee. The development of the cemetery is an ongoing task with major expansion and refurbishment work being carried out at the present time.
The annual blessing of the graves takes place each summer as it has done since the foundation of the cemetery in 1832.The cemetery contains historically notable monuments and the graves of many of Ireland's most prominent national figures. These include the graves of Daniel O'Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell, Michael Collins, Éamon de Valera, Arthur Griffith, Maude Gonne, Kevin Barry, Roger Casement, Constance Markievicz, Pádraig Ó Domhnaill, Seán MacBride, Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa, James Larkin, Brendan Behan, Christy Brown and Luke Kelly of the Dubliners. The grave of Michael Collins, the nationalist leader who was killed in the Irish Civil War in 1922, is among the most visited sites in Glasnevin. Around him were buried at least 183 soldiers of the Irish Free State. In 1967 their names were recorded on memorial around Collin's grave.

On 28 June 1920, a company of the Connaught Rangers stationed at Jullundur on the plains of the Punjab refused to perform their military duties as a protest against the activities of the British Army in Ireland. On the following day, the mutineers sent two emissaries to a company of Connaught Rangers stationed at Solon, about twenty miles away in the foothills of the Himalayas. The soldiers there took up the protest as well and, like their counterparts at Jullundur, flew the tricolour of Ireland, wore ‘Sinn Féin’ rosettes on their British Army uniforms and sang rebel songs.
The protests were initially peaceful, but on the evening of 1 July around 30 members of the company at Solon, armed with bayonets, attempted to recapture their rifles from the company magazine. The soldiers on guard opened fire, killing two men and wounding another. The incident effectively brought the mutiny to an end, and the mutineers at both Jullundur and Solon were placed under armed guard. Sixty-one men were convicted for their role in the mutiny. Fourteen were sentenced to death by firing squad, but the only soldier whose capital sentence was carried out was Private James Joseph Daly. Daly was considered the leader of the mutiny at Solon and the man responsible for the failed attack on the magazine. On the morning of 2 November 1920 he was executed in Dagshai prison in northern India.
With the exception of one man (who died in prison at Dagshai), by the middle of the following year all of the convicted mutineers had been transferred to prisons in England to serve out the remainder of their sentences. The Connaught Rangers, along with three other Irish regiments, were disbanded in June 1922. Following negotiations between the Irish Free State and the British government, the mutineers were released from prison and returned to Ireland early in 1923. Some enlisted in the National Army, others joined the Garda; many struggled to make a life in post-independence Ireland. Although the mutineers in many cases received rapturous welcomes in their home town, they quickly vanished from the public eye.

Another awesome video, God bless all their souls. My best friend, Brendan Dowling, is interned in big newer cemetary in Galway center. When I was looking for his stone the first time to share a shot of irish whiskey again, which I do every year, I happened upon another stone nearby that had the following inscribed on the headstone - I told you I was sick...There is also a large memorial there to the victums of a large plane crash...Every time I visit Brendan, he is still atTrappers Inn Pub, on the Tuam road having a pint...ps we dont mind the wind...

Hi Sue! Great coverage there despite the wind. Given His Eminence's lack of sympathy for the nationalist cause I'm not surprised he wasn't the most popular prelate Ireland's ever produced. And I wasn't expecting to see a shrine behind those cast-iron doors. I hear a council worker in Co. Glasnevin is just amazing. I've lost count of the number of times I've visited but never tire of it. The graves and monuments to important heros who gained independence for Ireland are such a draw. Another favourite place for me is Kilmainham jail. Seeing all the items associated with freedom fighters and the execution yard is humbling. I especially remember walking alone up a wide staircase in the museum and having somebody grab my ankles from behing. I grabbed the rail to stop falling back, but there was nobody behind me. For some reason I wasn't frightened.

@@SerenitySueGraveyards When I notice the youth perish back in the day , like three family members at 26 years I think how odd , did they all fall off a cliff together or what gives? I have to remember that these younger folks more than likely got sick and succumbed to a virus or disease of the day. Cut down in the prime of their lives and no amount of money or nobility can bring them back . How sad for the families. Today , we basically have the same thing except now when a younger person bites the dust it’s usually either an accident or drugs . Still sad . This cemetery is simply, AMAZING!!! The monuments, tombs, family mausoleums, simply amazing!!! Judging by some of the mausoleums having new signs and doors 🚪 it seems that some families are trying to keep their family mausoleums in somewhat good condition, unless the cemetery management is doing some of this. One question if I may ask? Some of these older family mausoleums have a grill, or perhaps a gate on the inside. Could the reason for this be added protection against vandalism? Thank you very much Sue and GV for a totally awesome video. Take care. 😊

@Serenity Sue Thank you very much for getting back to me Sue, it was actually the first thing that came to mind when I saw those grills, or gates. I maybe wrong, but this cemetery is so HUGE, it would probably take someone a good couple of months, just to cover everything. Thank you very much again Sue and GV. Have a great day.

The sculpture of the woman in the cornette most likely was a nun because she is wearing that religious Habit that was worn by the order of nuns called the Daughters of Charity. During my research, I read that because of the cornette, they were known in Ireland as the 'butterfly nuns.' In the United States, the Daughters of Charity wore wide, white corvettes from 1850 to 1964. There are several pictures of nuns in cornette Habits online. The actress sally Field wore a similar cornette in the 1967 movie, 'The Flying Nun.'

The size of this cemetery and the # of people buried there is almost beyond belief. I like that it was for all religions and those with no religion because no one knows what is in the heart of a person just before they leave this life. The #'d underground "funeral masoleums" remind me of "apts".

@@SerenitySueGraveyards I had heard about the Magdalene graves but I had no idea there were so many burials from the mid 19th century in Dublin. It's the sort of number I'd associate with a genocide. May God grant rest to those souls. 🇦🇺 🇮🇪

I'd imagine it was from the famine Times, Dublin has still less people living there now than there was back before the famine, so many died and lots immigrated to America 💔❤
