- The Grade I listed Brompton Cemetery is the well-loved resting place of over 200,000 people, a haven for wildlife and a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
Nestled among the spectacular trees and undergrowth are over 35,000 gravestones and monuments. The cemetery is alive with the amazing stories of all the people buried there since the 1830s, including some well-known names like Emmeline Pankhurst and John Snow.

As I child Saturday was spent with my Nan in our local cemetery ,in spring we would clean the moss and over growth off ,scrubbing with Ajax .the rest of the year was keeping the grass cut and the graves tidy and the flowers fresh we always took a flask of tea and sandwiches as my Nan was one of 13 children and only three of them were still alive there was always plenty to do that’s where my love of graveyard started so thank you for expanding my horizons
Mine was something similar, as a child going with my mam and dad to family graves, cleaning and helping and thinking how beautiful it was

It's a fantastic place
I lived in London from 1990 to 1998 and Brompton Cemetery was one of my favorite places. At one stage I lived around the corner from it in Earl's Court and during the hottest parts of Summer I would go and sunbake in there. I'd lie on the grass for a couple of hours and then go to the pub afterwards. I will never forget the catacombs and used to walk down one particular stair to the chained door and just stand there for ages looking in and wanting so much to go in and walk around the tunnels. It left a huge impression on me and I miss it a lot. I moved back to Australia in 1998 so have not been back since, but if I ever did get back to London that's probably the first place I would go. When I found this video and started watching it I was saying to the screen "go to the catacombs! go to the catacombs!" xD Nice to see it again. I've missed it. I saw a few more of yours of Brompton come up in the search I did, I'll watch those too.
Ahh bless you, I absolutely loved Brompton as I did highgate cemetery too. I felt such peace here. From the busy madness of the city to the beautiful cemetery. I long to go back and feel that excitement again
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Right at the end of my time in London I moved to a place in the South East called Nunhead and found a really old large cemetery there too, have you ever been there? Kind of out of the way to get to, but from memory when I looked it up it was an auspicious one. I found a huge monument there one time which had part of the side cracked in and you could see right into it. Loved that place. But yea, Brompton will always be my favourite. I subbed to ur channel anyway, I love graveyards so will watch all ur videos. :- )

I live about 20 miles outside of Chicago and I feed the birds, squirrels, raccoons,opossums, skunks, foxes,deer, and anything else that comes into my yard. Animals are all welcome and sometimes its hard to watch due to a hawk or owl or Coyote attacking one of the other animals. Thank you for the wonderful tour!!!!

I love to be surrounded by nature and animals, if I thought I could have a pond I would but the animals seem to like seafood lol, so I will keep my fish tanks inside.

What is so incredible is the great variety of monuments and tombs; from the most ornate to the most humble yet all express great love in memories of those sleeping in death.
Very true Stefan, it's just unbelievable. I adore doing this, from the smallest, oldest, overgrown cemeteries to the most magnificent.

I think they keep some as a nature preserve, well that's what they had on some signs but I'd love to be able to have got into those over grown parts, they are just as important to me as those expensive memorials x

It's not about disrespect for the dead or about funding, it's about looking after nature in British cemeteries. These places are also nature reserves and back to nature we will all go. With best wishes to you in the USA.

What’s so amazing to me is all these beautiful monuments for the respect of the dead and the living won’t even respect them by keeping the grounds kept.
Most of the grounds are kept but if you go off the beaten track it's extremely bad in areas so sad
What can one say sue but just another great walk,from the greatest mausoleum to the simplest grave we’re all judged the same .

For some reason this one has me feeling even more melancholy than usual - makes me think of all the money spent on those beautiful monuments in order to be remembered, while so many others don’t have so much as a simple marker. And one day, even these huge monuments will have disappeared. Glad they are still here for us to see for now though, and in some cases, many years to come.
It's true Cathy, as they say, shrouds dont have pockets..even the rich and famous will be forgotten in time x

Agreed, Roxanne! Here in CT we have tons of squirrels - they love to visit my patio and my cats love to talk to them through the glass (they are indoor cats). I always make sure there is fresh water and food out.

What a beautiful walk through, I love walking through old graveyards, there is an amazing one at Robin Hoods Bay North Yorkshire, the church is stunning and gravestones amazing with once that is a chain and anchor that looks suspended in the air, if you are ever here up north, I think you would love it 💓

OMG I have squirrel s living in my porch roof, I live in Illinois USA & we have tons of them. Especially black one's. Months ago there was several playing in the snow, I thought they were huddling on my porch for warmth but they had something else in mind LoL right in front of me. Little buggers 💚
Oh Lora 🤣🤣 I never realised there were black squirrels until I was told but then I googled them and I've gone on a rampage of photos of them, they look so sweet but they can't be doing that in front of you 🤣🤣

Oh definitely go back, also enquire when they do the tour of the catacombs, unfortunately they were not open for us, it might be once a month but definitely worth asking to get inside, I did the tour in Highgate and it was absolutely amazing, obviously the catacombs there were my favourite

I grew up nearby and was born in the hospital alongside ... what I also remember is this HUGE HUGE building for children dead. It was the rabies stuff. So, no wonder that the Brits are freaked about an outbreak of rabies and the strict animal rules.

As someone who absolutely loves history, memorial parks like these are treasure troves of the stories of lives from the past. What strikes me is that while the pathways are well maintained, if you travel more than a few meters off the path it becomes impassible and the stones I see obscured by the growth of nature and the fact they are so packed together would mean I couldn’t see their stories - which to me seems a loss.
I said exactly that in the video and here in comments, kind if seems like the rich and famous are the ones on the main paths..whilst the less known and poorer families are forgotten in the long over grown grass, that's sad, hence why I love to wander off into the overgrown cemeteries...to find the ones forgotten
I loved the view of bare-knuckle boxing champion John Jackson's grave. I'll offer one little tip regarding squirrels and it's no big deal, but in my area of the US, we don't mind squirrels at all. They're hunted for food, in season, but people are usually fond of seeing them around the yard.

Yes they do Pat, The drapery either represents a shroud representing death and sorrow, or can also be a motif that reperesents a veil that separates the earth and Heaven, there is so much meaning to the gorgeous monuments I find it hard to remember them all x

I think I came across the urn before and it was said to be a life cut short, then I read the half columns were a life cut short so I'm not always sure on it, also I was told the half column meant the last line of the family..so maybe it depends on the time ? Those lovely trees swaying in the breeze are a perfect counterpoint to the gravestones. The swaying branches and leaves seem to be saying as spirit voices, "We live on." But dear darlin' Sue, I'll gladly send you every gray squirrel that jumps from my trees to my roof and scold me when I tell them off. Brown squirrels, yes. Black squirrels, enchanting. I was even so lucky to have seen a few white squirrels where I grew up, but gray squirrels? Never! You'd change your mind if one crawled up inside the wall of your house and died. There needs to be a gray squirrel graveyard.

@@SerenitySueGraveyards If you like wildlife in cemeteries, check out Forest Lawn, Buffalo, NY. Beautiful white deer frequent it, as well as a few fox. I went there often when I lived in the area.
We have beautiful deer here, I was lucky yrs ago to feed one from my hand with bread..they came into my home at the time and ate all my shrubs, ahh I know the squirrels are a nuisance for lots but because I don't see them much I was intrigued ❤️
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Deer live in my woods and graze in my yard. I especially love the young ones. But not the ticks they spread. I keep spray by my front door to remind myself to spray my skin before I go in the yard.

Quite a high population density in that resting place,at least you know that you are not alone in this centre of peace.Brompton Cemetery is the only cemetery owned by the Crown but it started as a private cemetery.I am not sure if the cemetery was served by the 'coffin trains' which served the 'modern cemeteries' when the older resting places reached maximum capacity.Maybe these relatively new buildings were the beneficiary of a Lottery Grant awarded in 2014. at around 28:00 in the video.
More dead than living from what I could tell..busy place but I love that ❤️

The Tauber grave is on the left of the main walkway from the Earls Court entrance, quite easily found. Tauber was a very great singer.

You mentioned Chelsea F.C.,not far from the Tauber grave is the grave of Joe Mears,I believe he was a main founder of Chelsea Football Club. My notes aren't intended as criticism of the presenter of the Brompton Cemetery documentary, merely notes of interest.

Is it common for the grass and vegetation to be so overgrown in European cemeteries? Here in the US they keep it mowed.
Yes, it's pretty common, unfortunately everything or most seems to be done through donations and volunteers
