  • I share my experience of the 2023 CDH, 110K race at Val d'Aran by UTMB. It is a beautiful course but most of us did not make it to the finish line. A massive thunderstorm came in the way and the race had to be stopped for safety reasons. Starting in Les and finishing in Vielha in the Spanish Pyrenees, the CDH and it's sister races, the VDA, PDA and others are incredibly beautiful and challenging. I will be back!

    Super race report 🤩👍
I ran in 2021 (the first edition) but passed out, at 148K (out of 170K)
    I'm back in the 2024 edition of 163 K 😊🏃‍♂💥💨

Thank you! It is beautiful and technical in the Pyrenees. Are you running the VDA? Tough race, but you have the experience and you seem determined so I'm sure you'll do great. And enjoy, that's what matters most. I got in to race UTMB CCC so I am heading to Chamonix (start in Courmayeur) end of August. Similar to CDH in length 100K and elevation 6200m+. It will be fun! I'll make a video of that too, hopefully this time there will be no storm and I can do the full distance.

What about Running stones??? Could you take part in utmb?

    • @Up_and_running

The organization decided to give us our running stones even if the race was stopped. I guess it was because it was something beyond our control and most of us had already covered a significant part of the distance. Since Val d'Aran is a major I got 6 stones. I will use them to enter the lottery which opens this week and hopefully get a spot to run CCC in Chamonix nest year. We will see. What running and race plans do you have?

Hi, It is good to book in good time, as soon as possible! I stayed at Hotel Vielha Baqueira affiliated by Melia. I travelled with my wife. Not the cheapest option perhaps , but not the most expensive either. I remember searching on booking.com to see what options there were. It worked very well. The hotel is very well located just 200 meters from the race village and maybe 400 meters from the start and finish, 200 meters from the bus that takes you to the start on race day.. Very convenient! It was also good to have the hotel breakfast. Of course there are many options of hotels and apartment but I can recommend Vielha Baqueira if it suits your budget.

Hi again. Well, if you plan to run this summer you should be training already. What is your base level of fitness and experience in running ultras? That makes a big difference. For Val d'Aran I'd say you should be running a volume of at least 50km per week. How much are you running today? It doesn't need to be fast, but you body needs to get used to spending many hours on you feet and running on tired legs. Also, you should try to do lots of uphills and downhills, depending on what you have available where you live, or on a treadmill. The Pyrenees are big, steep mountains. Ideally you should have good aerobic capacity so your heart rate stays relatively low when doing a consistent medium intensity effort for many hours. And finally, you have to practice your hydration and nutrition for the race, and have the right equipment. So there is quite a lot to think about but if you are an experienced runner this shouldn't be a surprised. Hard to be more specific without knowing you running history, experience and you current level of fitness and training. It is a wonderful race but to enjoy it one need to be in good shape.
