    I don't mind the Select, but I wish they would bottle these at 46%, it still has the Laphroaig character, somewhat attenuated

    This is my first Laphroaig and first peated whisky (although I've bought myself Lagavulin 16, Caol Illa 12 and Talisker 10, they're on the waiting). I've seen may reviews about the peaty Islay whiskey, and I knew what I was getting into, but I have to say, that smell caught me off guard. The intensity of a smoked ham, cigarette smoke, some medicine/sanitizers (i guess that's what "fenols" are). I tell you, it blew me away, that first dram. But on the taste, it wasn't that aggressive. It had that malty taste, vanilla, fruits, and smoke from the nose of course. And it remaied in my mouth, and my nose too for a long time. I tell you, itt was a shocking thing, nice all in all, but very shocking, despite all the mental preparation. I hope that I helped all the whiskey fellows out there who are thinking about that first Laphroaig step.

    My sister and b.i.l. are whiskey enthousiast and they've turned me on to single malt. We're having an Islay themed evening soon (we like to combine it with some nice tabeletop games). This is a really nice one to start with before moving on to something like the Lagavulin 8 or a Port Charlotte 10.

    Laphroaig 10 and QC having imo lost their mojo somewhat recently, I thought I'd pick up a bottle of this at £23. Really quite impressed. You nailed it with 'briny'. Given my disappointment with recent Laphroaig's, this is one I'll take note of. Oh, and natural colour too! Nice review, Vin.

      I don't mind a good entry level dram. This one for a lot of stick from my peer group but I think it's just fine. Knows what it is and priced accordingly

  • @WhiskyGeek
    @WhiskyGeek 5 років тому +2

    I picked this up alongside a Bowmore No1 for about £20 each. Even at that price I was dissapointed, but I stuck with it and found that both of them really improved after being given chance to breathe (about 1/3rd of the way down the bottle). I grew to like them both in their own budget/casual/accesible way. Certainly nothing to rant out but filled a hole as a daily dram.
    Also, this tastes 10 times better when you have a cold - give it a try if you catch one this winter!

    I genuinely think you’re biased against it due to the low price. You should do a side by side. The truth is that to me it’s like a 10 has been mixed with some fruits which blur the sweetness by adding to it. I know some folks will always prefer the 10 but to be honest both are awesome.

    Hi Vin, this was a good review of Laphroaig Select. I am a big fan of Laphroaig and in fact it is one of my top 2 Single Malt brands. But Laphroaig Select is definitely the least favorite of all the Laphroaig expressions that I have tasted. Still for me, I think that this Whisky is better than some of the other Single Malts out there at a similar price point.
    During 2 of my past visits to Laphroaig, I have done the “Layers of Laphroaig” tasting. This particular tasting focuses on how they came up with the Select expression. They walk you through the different Whiskies that go in to Laphroaig Select. While I found their methodology very interesting, I think that it is flawed. They basically brought in a group of Friends of Laphroaig for multiple meetings at the distillery to come up with the flavor profile. It seems that they were trying to come up with a Whisky that would appeal to people who generally do not like Laphroaig 10 because of the peat profile.
    Personally, as a Laphroaig fan, I believe that the problem with the Select is there is too much going on with all of the different components. In my opinion, they ended up with a mishmash of a Whisky. It lacks a definite character compared to most of the other Laphroaig expressions. I am reminded of the old saying, “a camel is a horse designed by a committee”. I think that Ardbeg has done the same thing with its An Oa expression. They basically went after people that do not care for the Ardbeg 10 and its flavor profile. While the Ardbeg An Oa might be slightly more successful than the Select, I am not sure if Ardbeg accomplished their goal. Thanks and Sláinte !

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  5 років тому +1

      That's some great info thanks Duane!
      Like you say, they tried something new to broaden their portfolio but might have just missed the mark. I didn't really get on with the An Oa much but I'd like to try it a few more times before I commit to an opinion of it.
