Perfect! This is EXACTLY what I was feeling about the change. It was like loving a bourbon or a scotch and having someone try to introduce you to something similar that they found and love. At first I was not happy with this change AT ALL. But, I have to say my palate has grown and I am really beginning to appreciate the separation. I am appreciating the separation of silliness and seriousness, both on the nose and on the tongue. :D

This reminds me of an ad campaign that dominoes pizza did a few years back, where they put all of their harshest reviews on their commercials. Things like, "the sauce tastes like ketchup". The difference was that they were trying to use this as a way of saying they heard the comments and were committed to doing better. I love that Laphroaig was like, ya deal with it instead.

  • @nkingofficial

I agree about marketing - that campaign, which I was seeing on Facebook ads, made me purchase Laphroaig 10 the first time years ago. And loved it instantly

Laphroiag 10 was the first bottle of scotch I bought for myself. The friend who introduced me to whisky started me with Ardbeg Corryvreckan 😂 and I likened it to licking an ashtray... but I was hooked on the peat. Getting through that first bottle of Laphroig took a while... I LOVED the smell and would just sit nosing the glass for hours watching Game of Thrones with my wife. The best was smelling the empty glass the next morning haha. I had a bottle of the 10 year Sherry Oak Finish here but we must have killed it. I'll have to pour the Càirdeas Pedro Ximénez Cask Strength (58.9%). "If you wouldn't take their advice, don't listen to their criticism." I love that. Sláinte!

      @doubleg2475 2 місяці тому

I do the same thing with 10. The next day I’ll smell the glass multiple times. It reminds me of my grandpas workshop after cutting lumber with his power saws. Smells like hot/burnt lumber.

"Smells like a burning hospital" 😂 this one got me ❤
When my dad was in intensive care in a hospital for months i noticed that there is a "Laphroaig drawer" in one of their cabinets.
In this dark and challenging times, the smell when the drawer was opened by the nurses put a rare smile on my face.

  • @Mitharan23

"We just didn't care" with that smile should be a moral for life in general. There is a true freedom in doing what you love and ignoring the rest.

Love this! What a dynamic channel now!! EDIT: I had just got into Laphroaig when they had that ad campaign. It helped me find a way to describe peaty whisky to non whisky people, Id say, some people try it and go, "Oh, man, gross, this tastes like old shoes, a musty old room, rubber and burning", and then theres people who try it and say, "Oh, ya! This tastes like old shoes, a musty old room, rubber and burning!" XD

I was lucky enough to have a Cask Strength Tasting at Laphroaig with Daniel and Emma. Complete coincindence, but it was amazing and we both picked a 250ml bottle of Laphroaig from 2007 so 15 years old which aged in an Oloroso Sherry Cask to take home. I still cerish this day.

So funny…Laphroaig WAS my gateway whisky! I was not yet a whisky drinker and didn’t “get” it. Somewhere, someone (perhaps a bartender) described the Islay peated whisky style and Laphroaig happened to be on the menu. I love smokiness in tea, wine, meats, fish, and even those fancy scented candles. And I like different, interesting, and challenging in food/drink. So i leaped and fell in love with the bold. Laphroaig started my journey and only more recently have I begun to appreciate more “subtle” non-peated whisky from different regions.

The Laphroaig "Opinion's Welcome" campaign is what stoked the flames of curiosity in me and got me to try my first Islay Scotch. My local store at the time, didn't have any 10 year but DID have Quarter Cask which became my first taste of Laphroaig. I immediately fell in love and understood why somebody had described it as, "a salty campfire's asshole." 😆

Laphroaig 10 was my very first Single Malt, back in the 90s. It was so different...it made me curious. Never looked back... 😀. The Sherry Oak is brilliant, it's my favorite every-day dram in spring, fall and winter. Just now doing a side-by-side of the 10CS Batch 12 and 15. Both awesome as well. I guess I like Laphroaig a lot...

Love your take on you and what makes you-you. On to the Laphroig Sherry, I love the original 10 and the cask strength, I want the Laphroig signature, the Sherry just gives me a slightly different spin on the 10 without giving up too much. The way you describe it as slightly lacking on the sherry sweetness or the original punch is exactly WHY I like it.

Daniel, I was pissed when you changed the vault and the tribe. I watched from the very beginning of both channels. I couldn't wait for the next episode to come out. I watched whiskey biscuits and I watched you sit by yourself for reviews at the beginning of the vault before Rex joined in. It was my favorite time on the Saturday morning to watch you guys and the tribe. And every Monday, Wednesday and Friday watch the vault. Now that you're doing a different format and I've given it a chance… keep it up! Change isn't always a bad thing. But for a lot of people change is a hard thing. I'm still watching…

This is so true of the music industry. You have tech companies running the show through streaming platforms, the Grammies claiming to “support” the arts. It was hilarious when Taylor Swift got ticked off cause Apple wasn’t going to pay artist for stream through their platform trying to get them to pay the artist when someone streams their song(s). Like she knows what a starving artist is.

Yes change is hard. But good too.
I was kind in a strange way in my life these days. I remember that the MBs and the vault and Tribe channels helped me A LOT during a hard time in my life. But then, I totally stoped watching the videos. Not that I wasn’t interested anymore. Not that I didn’t like it anymore. No! But I’m kind of a bit hypersensitive. The loss of Emma and fancy Dan, even if it’s better for them was hard, and, I had a lot of changes in my life (a baby girl for example!) So I naturally stopped watching the video cause I didn’t have the time (or didn’t take it).
But when I heard the news of you alone here and not anymore in the Tribe videos, it was kind of a difficult news. But, it made me watch again the videos. I love the old format, but I love the new one too. So thanks for the change; cause it made me be back to be a part of the MBs !!
    Cheers! 🥃

Laphroaig 15yo was my second Single Malt Scotch after Glenlivet 12yo and I fell hard for Islay. This 10yo SOF seems like the QC with an additional swap, it's very good but maybe not well integrated. Where Laphroaig shines is 25-30yo but these days that's prohibitive. So I just stick with the 10yo C/S.

As soon as you mentioned the topic, i thought of 2 things... the Laphroaig ads (that i found out about after discovering Laphroaig) and a UA-cam channel called WhistlinDiesel. He doesn't take things seriously and LOVES doings things to provoke those that do! Lol He's a country boy and a lot of his subscribers like trucks (hence the Diesel in the name) so he goes and buys a brand new lifted truck... and then drives it through woods and scratches it up, breaks off doors, blows the motor etc... and he does this with everything! Ferraris, Tanks, historic Ford Model T's... just to prove you shouldn't take material things too seriously and enjoy life.

I have tried for so long to like Laphroaig, but I just can't. Love every other peated scotch I've had but Laphroaig just turns me off. That said, I completely respect them owning it and leaning in. I really wish more "brands" did that. I'm glad other people like it and I'm glad they have their place in the whiskey world. I'm not glad I have to listen to Laphroaig stans tell everyone else how wrong they are for not loving one of the most radical and extreme flavor profiles in whiskey.

My wife has gagged everytime I try to get her to sip some whiskey… until I brought home laphroig… I wasn’t a fan at first but it’s grown on me, and she loved it from the start. I guess she likes skoal straight chewing tobacco in a car doing a burnout next to the great salt lake before a storm…

I remember seeing a couple articles written by angry wine sommeliers because you guys were using their word for whiskey.

I would describe the Sherry Cask as Laphroaig is the main dish, and the Sherry is the garnish, not the side dish. As for entry level Laphroaig, the Cairdeas White Port and Madeira finish would be the most subtle expression i have tried. Even at 52%.

Laphroaig 10yr Sherry Oak Finish, not bad! Better than Bowmore 18 deep and complex 😆
