- Laphroaig Select takes its name from the special selection of American and European casks, chosen for their unique character that they give during maturation. Our Inspiration for our new Global expression has been take from history - 70-80 years ago, the time of the last family member owner of the distillery, Ian Hunter. Ian was one of the biggest influences in the history of Laphroaig indeed he was one of the first distillers to travel to bourbon county in the USA to identify new sources of casks that would give him greater consistency as well as new flavours. He later married this ‘new’ style of Laphroaig with his traditionally matured (European cask) Laphroaig.
Inspired by his early work , we have used Oloroso sherry butts, straight American white oak (non-filled with bourbon), PX seasoned hogsheads, Quarter Casks and finally of course first fill Bourbon Casks. This varied cask maturation technique enabled us to create 6 new flavour combinations that were then tested with our FOL’s to choose their favourite style and indeed name. The winning flavour and name chosen by you is LAPHROAIG SELECT.
Tasting Notes:
COLOUR: A Fully Natural colour with no caramel added, it is sparkling gold with layers of colour - arising from different maturations and oils mixing together.
NOSE: Peat first, then ripe red fruits from the PX and Oloroso casks. A hint of dryness next from the American oak with a long lingering florally finish - Marzipan and even limes at the end.
PALATE: This full bodied whisky is initially sweet up front- matching the nose, then the classic dry, peaty, ashy flavours come bounding in followed by a lovely rich finish arising from the rich fruits of the European casks. - Розваги
As a Laphroaig enthousiast I liked the Select very much.. But maybe it's because Laphroaig is blinding me with love 😄. I would certainly buy another one when this bottle is empty. ( my respect for the moment of silence!)
Btw.. Pricepoint in the Netherlands is €30. ($33).. Is it worth it, for me it is.
That's a great price Patrick
.... I was wondering why I didn’t ever buy a second bottle of select. So, I searched for reviews, and hey, look at that, the Dummies did a review... Apparently I liked the Select very much.... I should take tasting notes I guess. People, my fellow Whisky enthusiasts, make tasting notes! 😂
You guys are great. Love your reviews. Keep it up.
Thanks for watching Colin and/or Jennifer!
The moment of silence speaks volumes. As this weekend starts, I would like to thank you for your service!
thank you Aimee and Aimee's Husband!
Thank you Aimee and Husband
When i first started my scotch journey, ardbeg 10 scared me off from peat for quite awhile. The ashtray in the mouth was unbearable. Highland park 12 helped ease that fear a few months after. Just tried Laphroaig Select after my graveyard shift, and I love it. Now I don't feel like I have to avoid all the peated whiskys on the shelf. More whisky's to enjoy!
go with Laphroaig 10 next.
Brad Romer I can’t believe that you just had the EXACT same experience I had!!! I actually posted almost the same words except I didn’t bring up Highland Park(which is delicious by the way). So awesome that I’m not the only one. I love the select! It is so smooth and the after taste hits you but disappears soooo quickly. Makes it so enjoyable! Hope the Select stays in the lineup. If I was only allowed to drink 1 whisky the rest of my life, I would pick Laphoig Select
Good one dummies. I see the peat/ sherry wall coming down before my eyes. Glenlivet 18 and Talisker DE tonight here in Stone Harbor with good friends. Nicely done malts.
It has come down a little. Scott
Great review!
Thanks Viewpoint
I just got to taste this whiskey at my local. I pulled a Bart and spent two hours nosing and tasting. I didn't add water. I found it to have less peat, less sweet, less brine, less salt then other laphroaigs I've tried. Did I like it? You bet!
its a little lighter abv wise too.
Love the moment of silence. On the lighter side, the wife loves it when Bart says "Oaky" and Scott says "Oakiness". For me, I can almost taste the decimals, 89.5!
plus or minus one.
I don’t know how many reviews I have seen on numerous whiskies where they say maybe this is a gateway to those not used to peat or new to it, thanks for the review though guys, this is on sale here in the U.K. supermarket for £20.
I love peat but looking for budget ranges.
thanks christofinb
I found this exquisite single malt for $38.00 at a Woodman's in Altoona, WI..... Just a GEM of an Islay malt to the taste buds.... Blows my ass away quite honestly...............
this is a good one for that price. one of the biggest knocks this one got was the low abv they produced it at.
I too noticed this but the flavor is so insanely good that it really doesn't bother me at the 40% abv. I do agree that a higher abv might have been a good move on this one but like I said the flavor notes this Select has outweighs the lower than usual abv............(to me anyway)..... CHEERS DUDES!!!!
thanks jesse!
Lore is lovely
Now you are just teasing me...Bart
after the old 15 and my favorite 25yr cask strength, the lore is their best they have
Well its definitely on the list then!
1. Congrats on 1500 subscribers 2. Nice touch with the moment of silence 3. Trenny and C will be doing the Macallan 1824 Gold in the next couple weeks, so check it out 4. Great review guys!!
Thanks guys
Islay, Scotland - To the nose, classic, medicinal peat notes up front, supported by citrusy, chocolaty sweet notes and soft barley. The peat is there, but it is taking it easy and letting the bright notes of lemon, green apples and mint stand out. The finish is medium length. 46.00 bucks
one of the milder Laphroaigs.
5 last week, 3 more today.. numbers on a TV report to some, but fathers, sons, and mothers to the families. I am going to hold my tongue at that, and just say that I'm deeply troubled and saddened by the world I will leave my son in one day. Thanks for giving us a break from all the bad news with the new video. Stay safe out there my friends.
Terrible news Sal.
Thanks Sal...We will keep bringing you the crazy hats and the bad tans...at least on my part...Bart
Here, here on the moment of silence... touching.
👍
Love the 10 so I got the select and enjoyed it. It's a good starter scotch...$45. With tax.
yes it is. Thanks Steve.
This Laphroaig Select is $39.99 by me now. I can still find the regular 10 year for around $50, the QC for $55 and the 10 Cask Strength, a few scarce batch 11s for $64.99. Most places have upped the 10 year to $65 and the cask strength to $80 due to the tariffs I believe. So was wondering if the Select would be adequate as a cheaper daily drinker for a peat lover so I can save the pricier stuff for the weekend to make it last longer. Also do either of you like the Quarter Cask, or how do you like it compared to either the 10, 10 cask strength, or even against say Ardbeg 10? I haven't tried the QC yet.
the Select is definitely a good cheaper daily dram. The Quarter Cask is good as well. Bart would say its hard to beat the 10 year.
My favorite froyg is still the triple wood... I enjoy the quarter cask and the ten a lot, but I could probably pass on this one.
our review of the triple wood may be forth coming.
Sherry based, my favourite Phroaig is currently PX
yes, that is a good one.
The basemalt of ex bourbon is first filled, and they didnt add artificial E150 caramel either.. I like this, compare it with 10 and QA, The best in theyr range is Quartercasks, the 18 was nice, but the 15 didnt live up to my expectations and triple wood sample didnt impress me much for the price...
But I like all the stuff Ive got from Laphroaig, Theyr all good whisky..
If you test Lore anytime, let me know... Best regards, keep up the good work and spirit.....
We have Lore awaiting...i loved the 18 and the Triple Wood. The 15 didn't impress us too much either. Scott
It's almost like a children's version of the heavy-hitting Laphroaigs :D Quite watered down and tamed, just like the 10-year-old for a few years now. Bought a bottle of the select when it initially came out but won't buy another one. My go-to Laphroaigs are the 10-year-old in cask strength and the quarter cask which is still quite affordable, unlike other, newer fancy-shmancy releases...
Bart will agree with you Klaus. Exactly
You are speaking to my inner scotch heart Klaus. Bart my thought exactly.
Hated Select at first but it has grown on me.
Bart seems to like the big smoke of Laphroaig so this is way it falls short for him. Bart, if you have a chance to find the 2015 Cairdeas its an interesting take on Laphroaig with all of the barley peated at Laphroaig, ran through the
small still and matured in their #1
Warehouse. Thanks for the review guys -'keep up the good work!
Thanks Nathan. We're keeping our eyes open for the Cairdeas and the Lore.
Yup. Tried a bit right when I got the botle and swore I was drinking gasoline seasoned with burnt rubber, and iodine.
2nd glass the next day was quite drinkable. It's weird how your tastebuds adapt to this stuff.
I'm with Bart on this one... Thank goodness the Triple Wood isn't as "oaky" as this one. It's a complete pass for me, but I agree with Scott that it's a nice gateway to the peat gods for others. My first scotch was the Smokehead Islay blend, so I was almost "all-in" from the beginning.
thats a hell of a starter. the Select has probably become one of the least favored Laphroaigs.
I want to start getting into Laphroaig as I'm a huge fan of Ardbeg and want to compare. In the beginning I noticed you had the Laphroaig 15 200 anniversary & the 18. Of the 2, which one is better. I am leaning toward the 18 by reviews. I know the original 15 is about $100 more than the 15 anniversary. Yes, a shootout of Laphroaig would be great. I think I would try other Laphroaigs before purchasing this select. I believe the select consists of 5 casks and not 3, just saying. On a note, your bar selection must be huge! Great video though.
We actually have not had the 15. We've done the 10, Qtr Cask, 10 Cask Strength, Select, and Three Wood may be coming up. Laphroaig is one of Barts favs though and he's always searching for more. the bar selection is growing.
Respect for the moment of silence
This is my go-to at the moment. I’ve found it at $24.99.
wow, thats a great price for it.
$24.99?! Where..?
Trautsen Gruebenheimer Massachusetts. I first spotted it about two months ago. To be honest, I didn’t even know what it was. I was just in the mood for peat. I brought it to the register expecting the price to be corrected, but it was not. So for the last couple of months I’ve bought two bottles every visit to the liquor store. One bottle of something new that I want to try and one bottle of Laphoaig Select.
@@nheuk3 cheers to that, brother! here in missouri i've only seen it for 40-45dollas a bottle.
The moment of silence was appropriate, and the reserving of opinion understandable. That said, as a simple viewer I'll be a tad more. . . forward with what immediately came to mind with your nod of respect to the fallen officers. Without getting too partisan here, I will simply suggest that over the past 2 1/2 years, I have witnessed an agenda-riddled media conglomerate along with a group of shameless politicians do everything possible to fan the flames of a contrived "race war" in order to galvanize a particular voting block. It is unsurprising that these "journalists" and politicians would resort to propagating such a narrative. What is completely sobering and absolutely inexcusable is the fact that in the face of the lives lost over the past several years they seem ever emboldened to ramp up these activities. Before the families of the fallen Dallas officers had a chance to grieve an before the rest of the nation could process the events, our "President" wasted no time in further inciting division among Americans by immediately appealing to that divisive platform, to the point of calling for "anger", in fact. Just this past Thursday he held a town where he built on that theme, almost unbelievably. In the audience was the daughter of a Staten Island black man killed in a controversial physical confrontation with police. Her response to the "President" was enlightening, as she asserted that the entire town hall was a "sham", amounting to "full exploitation of black pain and grief". As disgusting as this embarrassment and perversion of leadership may be, such a perversion would never be possible if so many of us did not buy into the garbage we are fed by the talking heads on television or by each gutless side of the aisle. We need to wake up, we need to demand better, and we need to put our differences aside because evidently none of our lives "matter" in this struggle for power.

Well said Sir.
Well said also Dhsilv2.
Bart was saying Oaky and Smokey, and earlier said a little phenolic... Oakie-Smokie-Phenokie!
The guy named Slaughter? Probably in the old country it was like "Slottier" which means the guy who adds decorations to hats.
Ha...I'll tell him that fits.
Can I ask a bourbon related question? I'm enjoying Noah's mill a lot! Seems this is a"bourbon" blend. I like the complexity of it over drams like Elijah Craig which "seem" more mono. Are there more drams like Noah's mill around in the USA?
I will let Scott field this question. I have not had the Noah's Mill. Have you had the Woodford Reserve or Blanton's? Bart
+Scotch Test Dummies I'm thinking of getting one yes. First have to test 12 samples of Koval, journeymen and catoctin creek ;)
+Scotch Test Dummies am currently soaking a barrel for maturing my own stuff ;)
I highly recommend Makers 46 (not Makers Mark). Makers 46 to me seems on a par with Blanton's. Maybe it's Blanton's #1, and Makers 46 #2. For a less expensive yet still great Bourbon I'd say the bottle labeled "Buffalo Trace." That's good stuff.
We have not seen the Noah's Mill. May have to look for it. I (Scott) was not that impressed with the Elijah Craig 12. It was OK but not my favorite. One of my favorites is Stagg Jr. I just tried the Willett's Single Barrel this week and it was delicious as well.
You should try the Laphroaig cheese off their website. Holy crap, it's good!
The 18 yr old is worth getting too.
The 18yo has officially been deleted. If you can still find any, buy them.
+VaryingViewpoint still available online in the UK from Whisky Exchange, but... costs around £100 now. They have loads in their London store.
Not saying you can't still find them. Just saying, what's available is all there will be as they are not releasing them anymore.
We have reviewed the 18. Love it, very smooth
Have you had glenmorangie signet?
Have not... yet.
+Scotch Test Dummies bourbony meets sherry meets mocha
Sounds excellent.
Bart, what do you get Scott? Scott, Peat.... LOL..... and .... more peat...
Boom thats it!
Did someone just say, "Laphroaig Shootout" ? Bring it boys! BTW - the tasting notes in the comments below the video are a nice touch.
Oh we are bringing it brother!
Do you think you would have scored it higher (Bart) if it wasn't a Laphroaig and rather a random brand that you had never heard of? It's the only Laphroaig that I haven't tried that I can easily get, mainly due to negative reviews. After Scott's score I think I'll have to get a bottle. I do love the Peat, but then again I love many a non peated Whisky too.
No that would be the score even if it was a random brand...if anything I was more stunned by how lack luster it left me. I honestly expected more out of the bottle because of the name. I try to just call them as I taste them but had this one effected me via name I would have really scored it in the dumper because of my dashed expectations.
We have a SHOOTOUT planned with 7 bottles all from Laphroaig at the same sitting. I'm looking forward to this because having one right next to the other then next to the other and so on really helps me pick out the subtle differences. Bart
+Scotch Test Dummies I'll have to follow along with the shoot out and do one of my own to compare how we taste...once I get the Select, I'll have 18,15,10,10 cask strength, quarter cask, PX cask, An Cuan Mor, Cairdeas and Select..will I need to get the triple wood?
On another note, I know the dummies are a fan of the novelty T-shirt. You need to both get one of these...
www.teepublic.com/show/60422-super-scotchy-bros
I've heard nothing good about the Select.
Bart: i thought that Ardbeg was your favorite distillery?
I was a laphroaig man...and then we did a bunch of 16 bottle blind peat shootouts...and I was picking Ardbeg left and right. It was quite surprising to me let me tell you. bart
@@ScotchTestDummies See that's why I trust your reviews; you are a fellow smokehead and Ardbeg is my favorite too. Have you tried "A Dream of Scotland"? I'd never heard of it but Whiskey Vault reviewed it and Daniel said it tasted smokier than any Octomore he'd had. I gotta' find a way to get some though I hear it's put out by an independent out of Germany.
P.S. I do like Laphroaig & Lagavulin too and always have a bottle of each on hand for change of pace.
Much respect for that moment of silence.
thanks Robert.
have you join the laphroaig club on their web site
I don't have my square foot of ground just yet but I've been eyeing this real nice section of peat bog. I need Scott to register too and give me his so I have two. Bart...
i would like to visit my little bit of scotland some day
+bushmillsrare go in winter...the sand flys are terrible in summer.
thanks for the inside info
+bushmillsrare we have them in South Carolina as well, but they are a lot nicer haha
Didn't oaky- smoky win a county music award? LOL
Yes...yes they did. lol
Nice touch with the moment of silence! We are obligated to remember, RIP!
40 to 50 range on the price.
Thanks Daddy
+Scotch Test Dummies that's what I'm here for
