This rules, been searching for something like this since I first heard them as a teenager something like 18 years ago now, thank you Rick. Discovering this band around 05 during peak corporate emo/pop-punk market saturation was like getting struck by lightning, I will always come back to these songs
The Atom Jack performance in this set is legendary. Rick's screams. John's harmonics. If they ever invent time machines, I'm going back to 1994 to watch this show
wow, this is a killer set. thanks so much for sharing this. this band didnt get their due, hopefully future generations will understand this through people like you sharing these early live vids.
Future generations checking in on the day I discovered this is the reason I got to grow up with The Mars Volta. Which means this sound spawned so many of my favorite bands. Kind of surreal.
Why is there no Mad Max/Clockwork Orange-style ultraviolent chaotic shenanigans, not to mention multiple spontaneous Woodstock 99-esque bonfires taking place amongst the audience to this unbelievably exciting near-superhuman tough as nails bar fight-friendly music? How was everyone controlling themselves and not completely losing their marbles to this unruly maelstrom? It's a good thing I wasn't there because I would have been twirling around at warp speed like a whirling dervish swinging around a vast array of hard to find medieval weaponry with all limbs flailing in each and every direction decapitating all who come within reach to this adrenaline shot to the heart of a rock and roll band. Drive Like Jehu deserved Hieronymous Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights-type biblical gnarlyness going on in the audience at every show. They were just that good.
Thanks for this...I was very late to being aware of Drive Like Jehu, but what a great band. So happy they got back together many years later for a triumphant 2nd act. Love Hot Snakes and RftC as well.
Bless you for uploading this. This audio and video quality is pristine. I wish I could’ve had an opportunity to see these guys live in their prime, but I’m only 21. Also, this version of Luau was both their most insane (godDAMN Mark, those fills!) and their most hilarious performance ever. The fact that they can goof around on stage and still sound phenomenal is truly something else. One day, I hope my band could be even half as talented as they ever were.
This band, and Ricks fronting of this band, at the time of this show was so wildly innovative and not like anything else going on at the time. Nothing like the other punk/post hardcore/ Midwest emo bands that were going at the time, and not like anything before. They straddle all of those genres, while doing something completely new, and immediately accessible. DLJ was a huge influence on my math/lounge metal band, as I’m sure they’ve influenced many bands over the years! Drive Like Jehu was a great fucking achievement, and all of us who appreciate it should pass it on and keep it going. RIP Rick, and thank you for doing this shit!
I absolutely love DLJ's energy and how they layer two seemingly at odds guitars with killer bass lines and glued it together with chaotic drums and unhinged vocals. Somehow it works magnificently! Was sad to hear of Rick's untimely passing.
Thank you for uploading this. I was supposed to see DLJ on this tour but they cancelled the show that I was gonna see. Luckily I got to see Hot Snakes several times over the years and the 2016 DLJ reunion, but man, it would have been great to see them live in 94'. This set is fucking intense.
Man, what a killer fucking live band. You can really hear how much influence these guys had on the "post hardcore" scene (or whatever you want to call it), especially other bands from San Diego.
This band does kinda epitomize mid western emo of the time. Super mathy, heavy and emotive lyric delivery, and a string section that would leave everyone wondering wtf they’re doing! Even the straight forward riffs are dissonant as fuck! This is one of those great punk bands that never gave a fuck how they would be perceived, and just made great fucking music. So glad they did this band!
Gosh. RIP Rick Froberg. This is a perfect document of their power and his enigmatic front man vibe. DLJ forever. Rick Froberg forever. 😪
John Reis is one of the most badass guitarists ever. He and Froberg play so well together.
HUGELY UNDERRATED
RIP Rick. Sending love to you, yours, and the Farr family.
"Hey Gar!" Froberg talking at the beginning to his then soundman and current Hot Snakes bandmate Gar Wood. So cool.
Don't forget Tanner!
RIP

Imagine going on after this
No point
Rick really was an incredible guitarist

Aw, man, rest in peace, Rick. Thank you for all the tunes, inspiration, and beauty.
RIP Rick. we will miss you so much
What a brilliant man he was.
Rest in peace, Rick.
Just now found out about Rick a month after the fact. RIP. To us you are legendary
Same dude, this hits different now.
Fucking big RIP Rick. This band is one of the foundational bands for me that kept me plucking away at the guitar after all these years.

My favorite live band in the 90s. Amazing music, great guys. It was a moment. Sigh.

Oh my god. Thank you. I think Tanner and Custom Floor opened. An all time favourite show. Thank you so much for filming and uploading this.
I’m glad you get to re-live a great memory!

RIck is on fire in this set, just amazing.

Massive yes, around 91-92 there was also Party Diktator and Dazzling Killmen too.

RIP 💔
RIP Rick. 😭
RIP Rick, great video. Love this version of Super Unison.
This mess looks exactly like how I imagined it and I love it.
"Play Mission of Burma!" yells that one Freebird asshole ... at a Drive Like Jehu gig.
That heckle was where I first heard about Mission of Burma...
What those 16 strings are doing all over 'Luau' is beyond sick... "guitar weaving"? Keith Richards and Brian Jones could never.
we love you rick. so incredible.
Great vid - never got to see any of his bands - RIP
We are very lucky this exists.
the luau theatrics lmao incredible band
RIP Rick Froberg

When music was REAL.
