You've mentioned two of my favourite drivers. I know an engineer who worked with Pedro and he decribes Pedro as the best test driver he's worked with. He uses him as an example to explain the feedback that he looks for from a driver.
This guy had the oportunity to score two podiums driving for Arrows in 2000: He retired from P3 in Austria and was again in P3 when the rain hit at Hockenheim. A shame that he couldn't had better results in F1. Grande Pedro!

Wow! The best Beyond the grid so far, and all of them have been excellent. Pedro comes across as the nicest guy. Very humble, and a wealth of knowledge. He's not afraid to acknowledge his shortcomings. But a great racing driver nonetheless. Great work Tom! How you going to beat that interview? Perfect. Thanks a lot. Ron Dennis should have just kept Pedro going from Bahrain 2005 until after the 2009 season. It would have saved McLaren a lot of problems and they'd won both Drivers and Constructors Championships 2007+2008 with Alonso/de la Rosa.
@@hansg6015 Better than Pedro, not better than Fernando. Michael Schumacher won 5 times with Ferrari because Barrichello was an excellent #2. If he had Hakkinen in the same team, it wouldn't have worked out.
OMG! What a refreshing and passionate racer Mr. Pedro is! I had a big grin on my face and occasional chuckles when I was listening to recounts of Fernando, Lewis and Kimi! His precise technical description of race cars gives an insight of his test driving skills and how F1 drivers think! Thank you so much 'Beyond the grid' team for this episode!
I remember reading an article (perhaps Autosport) that described Pedro De La Rosa's driving as being amongst the smoothest among his competitors - I believe the description was "silky smooth". I always thought that was an interesting remark, because I am a fan of Jackie Stewart who has always emphasized the importance of driving smoothly. I'm not sure I like the trend of motorsport competitors (and professional athletes in general) starting at increasingly earlier ages. Drivers who enter F1 at around 25 or more (like Pedro De La Rosa) bring a certain level of maturity, perspective, and humanism, which I think only adds to the appeal of the sport.
I wanted him to be a full time racer for McLaren he was quick on his best day. For someone who only tested mostly he was always ready to race when given the chance. Always liked this guy he’s cool. 🏎🏆🏁✌️
Hey there Tom. I've been passionately listening to your podcast for the last 4 months. As a fairly new F1 fan for the last 2 years it is right good to get all the insight into the drivers from past and present. Beyond the feel and sound and beauty of the F1 cars, the personalities of drivers are such a fine lure to the sport. The look into the mental and reflex drills these driver do to stay in full form for that ultimate time when the lights tick off on the track. So thank you these podcasts. You do such a top notch job on the interviews and your passion just comes through as listener and you seem to draw a lot out of these drivers to tell their stories and tales. Watching videos and listening to BTG has really been a salvation to me in this pandemic period. Thankee for that. You are keeping us fans ready for when F1 comes on back. Massive respect for Pedro de la Rosa, he's a very intelligent man. Gotta say: everytime I hear inside stories about McLaren in the 00s, it just sounds like a massively poorly managed company...and a lot of that lays at the feet of Ron Dennis. Blindness, mistreating people, hubris, poor long-term decision making: all seem to be hallmarks of Ron Dennis's management.
Um, McLaren under Ron's management won the driver's title in 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1998, 1999, 2008.... Constructors Champions in 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1998. Sounds like a failure to me.
I was at that test in September 2006. I watched as Hamilton went flat through copse in 6th gear while De La Rose was in 5th gear, it was so noticeable. The writing was on the wall.
@@sou8730 Both got demolished by Kimi. But Wurz was much more consistent in Imola than Pedro was in Bahrain. Kimi also trusted Alex in feedback more apparently. Which speaks volumes. Finally Kimi outqualified Pedro at every single race in 2006. Which is embarrassing. If Pedro wanted a drive for 2007 he shouldn't have been beaten so badly in the end.
@@ciaronsmith4995 Did you even listen to the podcast? The McLaren car was specifically made for Kimi, and both Wurz and Pedro were really struggling with the car. As he said, after moving to Ferrari, he wasn't as fast because the car stopped being suited to him. Both Wurz and Pedro were good, but not top drivers, so of course they'd do worse than freaking Iceman on his prime with one of the best cars that was made for him
@@sou8730 True, Kimi just adapted to the front end and destroyed these guys. THe gap was scary, Kimi was close to 2 seconds quicker than Pedro in some quali sessions. Look Kimi won a title in 2007 in a car he hated the handling of, he is a legend, of course these guys are nothing compared to him, but Alex Wurz deserved the drive much more than Pedro did. Out of Kimi, Mika, DC, Montoya, Wurz and Pedro, Pedro was the worst. By the way, Michael Schumacher is on tape admitting Ferrari screwed Kimi in 2008 with car developments, so it's not exactly true what Pedro said.

Pedro de la Rosa no tuvo muchas oportunidades como piloto titular. Pero las pocas que tuvo las aprovechó, lástima que apareció un tal Lewis Hamilton, de no ser por él, de la Rosa hubiera sido piloto titular
Si analizas la temporada 2006 las carreras que corrió, tuvo actuaciones bastante buenas.. Por aquel entonces por calidad pudo estar en muchos equipos como Renault por ejemplo una vez que se fue Fernando, supongo que el resto de pilotos tenías patrocinadores más potentes...

@@celador14 Pedro sucks man. He was complicit in Spygate too. We all remember the dirty emails him and Alonso sent. This only worsened my opinion of this guy. Pedro was the one telling Alonso when Kimi was going to pit in Australia 2007.
De la Rosa was in the know with regards to Spygate. Interesting to hear him defend their actions as innocuous even now. Data exfiltration is and has been a very serious business. As for Monaco, Lewis really was quicker that weekend. He was put on a 2-stopper to take the pressure off Alonso, but Lewis had more fuel and would've gone longer in his first stint, thus gaining track position and therefore the win.
Great observation about Kimi, Vettel, Lewis and Alonso. Good point about Kimi, he can be the fastest driver on the grid if everything is by his liking, but if he doesn't like something in the setup he is much slower. Thing is that likes of Vettel and Kimi will always be better at adjusting their cars and understand a lot about car behaviour, while Alonso just drives whatever you give to him and is not so good at pushing the development of the car. Although he has more raw speed then Kimi and Vettel. Great podcast!
Why do people keep insisting drivers "push the development of the car"? They don't. They give feedback on what areas to improve but they don't have a direct hand. Mclaren benefited from Adrian Newey for years and now its Red Bull. With Mercedes, its James Allison. These guys are responsible why Lewis is fastest and Max can compete with the fastest.
I wish they can have more engineers on the podcast, just to get a sense of the "engineering side to f1" rather than just solely drivers and commentators

Good point about Kimi, he can be the fastest driver on the grid if everything is by his liking, but if he doesn't like something in the setup he is much slower. Thing is that likes of Vettel and Kimi will always be better at adjusting their cars and understand a lot about car behaviour, while Alonso just drives whatever you give to him and is not so good at pushing the development of the car. Although he has more raw speed then Kimi and Vettel.

Why do people keep insisting drivers "push the development of the car"? They don't. They give feedback on what areas to improve but they don't have a direct hand. Mclaren benefited from Adrian Newey for years and now its Red Bull. With Mercedes, its James Allison. These guys are responsible why Lewis is fastest and Max can compete with the fastest.
TC is the only guy who makes the quiet F1 season bearable...
I wish they can have more engineers on the podcast, just to get a sense of the "engineering side to f1" rather than just solely drivers and commentators
