I made my initial comment before listening to the podcast. But after listening I realized that Blundell is a rare breed. In a society where everyone is driven by selfish pursuit of materialistic success, where stepping on your brother's neck to achieve is praised as killer instinct, Mark Blundell managed to keep his light and remained a good human being. No matter how much you try you only achieve within the bounds of what was written.
To those who are not familiar with it I strongly recommend watching onboard of his pole lap for 1990 Le Mans in Nissan R90CK. Pure madness, bravery and skill.
Been listening to these podcasts while I work from home, its been keeping me going! Im just playing this now to get me through the last hour! this'll be good! :)
Rory Byrne - absolute must for Beyond the Grid! Just imagine his stories about the B194, B195, F1-2000, F2001, F2002 and F2004! And about his work with Ross Brawn and Schumacher! Not to mention his stories about two of todays greatest engineers who were his "pupils" - Aldo Costa and James Allison!
This is very valuable and inspirational for the people out there who are used to coming not first, not second or even third, but fourth, fifth, sixth, etc. Keep your head up and believe in yourself. You can't control everything, you just have to trust you will end up where you are supposed to be and just enjoy the process. (P.S. not talking about racing)
Love these podcast, but one technical comment: 50 frames per second video is waste of resources here (encoding time, file upload/stream size), using 1 fps would be better if possible with just the same result. Btw, I remember Mark from CART, he was doing pretty well there IMHO, plus terrible crash in Rio. And one crazy out-of-fuel DNF with teammate Gugelmin in Detroit I think from 1st position a few corners from finish, yaargh.
Another great interview, great work! I think I enjoyed the Mario Andretti interview the most and he had a great quote that I will always remember. When he spoke about his grandsons and the fact that they had not done well when it came to F1, he said "no one had to push me" I love that! I expect they wanted more help from Dad and Grand Dad. Keep up the great work Tom!
@@1greenMitsi To make a long story short: For whatever reason Bertrand Gachot beat up Taxi driver and went to Prison for it, which opened up a seat at Jordan that went to Schumacher.
Great interview and a real 'what if'? Fact is there are so many stories like this and in the case of Damon, he was a great example of a guy who absolutely stepped up and as the level of difficulty increased it brought out the best in him. Who knows what would have happened with someone else in the Williams during that period? Looking at a guy like Frentzen for example, a driver who had a much better lower category pedigree than Damon, it almost broke him!
I remember Mark Blundell, very fast and brave driver that probably was capable to get wins if he just had slightly more support. Best Regards from Portugal
One of the best BTG’s so far, thanks. As an avid young reader of Autosport in the 90’s, it is illuminating to hear what was actually going on and what is was really like, for drivers like Mark.
Tom is very Anti Nelson Piquet and I hate him for that as I am a hugeeeeeeeeeeeee Piquet fan. Tom has a fixation with Senna and its cringeworthy. Jean Alesi talks about how good Nelson Piquet was to him and Tom asks about Senna... Gordan Murray rates Piquet as the best he ever worked with and Tom fixates on his deceased lover. Tom Clarkson is typical of the quality of journalists that Britain produces.
@@michaelpashut1696 Really? I didn't know about that. I'm a Brazilian born in 1986 and I would love to hear more about Nelson Piquet's career as my father is also a big fan of him and I love F1. There are a lot of stuff about Senna and Fittipaldi, but unfortunately not about Nelson. I was lucky enough to see him at Interlagos in 2011 with the Brabham of his 1st title. I hope there will be some more for its 40th anniversary next year. And it's a pity if we don't get to listen to Nelson on Beyond the Grid. Cheers!
Around 1 hour in the interview Mark tells about the V10 Yamaha engine but I could not understand his first two sentences he talks about the Yamaha. Can somebody write it down? Thank you 👍
peterprm19ify “ It was a good little car , wasn’t a bad little car, but I think engine wise, as much as I love the guys at Yamaha, I think we were a little bit behind the 8 ball”. ( something like that. It’s close).
0.75 playback speed might help. He says the Yamaha was "behind the 8 ball in performance and weight and dimensional size for packaging, so you know you jump from a Renault powered car which was just 2000 rpm and linear when you got on the throttle......... just a different kettle of fish, Yamaha was kind of like a light switch, on, off. All these things affect the balance of the car......"
@@TheChuckism1 thank you. Okay I am surprised because I have always learned the Yamaha V10 in 1994 was quite powerful. Especially after the summer upgrade.
So many people want the truly great and exceptional Nelson Piquet. The most unfairly treated driver and if you care to find out a exceptional kind human being.
Mostly knowing him for his stint in CART/Indycar (especially in Detroit & Portland for 1997), I sometimes forget about his Formula One career. This is a great listen.
after listening to all these you understand how horrible these f1 bosses were. Flavio,Jordan,Dennis all treated some drivers really terribly but i guess thats why they become so successful team managers...
Senna come to Britain when he was 21 without any knowledge of English, he learned the language,he outclassed every single driver in Britain and with his talent he entered F1. Since he moved to Britain in 1981 press played dirty campaign against him which is still present to this day, 26 years after he died.
Am i the only one who always confuses him with Martin Brundle
Yes
Same lol
Martin Brundle 😉
If you can't spell then I can see why. Its Blundell and Brundle.
They were known as the Brundell brother when they drove together.
I like this guy. Watching his commentary on itv he never talked down others, always respectful in his answers unlike some others. Good human.

How about Ferrari's Luca Badoer as a guest? He's got a looong F1 career
Great Interview Tom! You manage to shine a light on everyone you interview! Keep them coming
After the last few Beyond the Grid Podcasts, somebody needs to get on the phone to Ron Dennis!
They have already tried getting Ron on. Maybe in time.

Great interview. Congrats
Great to know how good was the 1993 ligier!
Please, make an interview with Bertrand Gachot!!
A.k.a the driver who "launched" Michael career
By fucking a taxi driver
Tbh I'd love to know what happened between him and the Taxi driver😂
a taxi driver launched Schumachers career?

Good interview but shame you didn't talk to him about his CART career. There must be some great stories there.
It would be nice to hear Roberto Moreno or Perry McCarthy talk about Andrea Moda.
Would love to hear Roberto Moreno talk about his career and what a big Role my all time hero Nelson Piquet played in his career.

Just went to watch that Berger Blundell battle at Hockenheim in 1993. I recommend it!
An underrated driver that deserve more chances
Here’s 3 people I’d love to hear from this year (if possible)
1. Fernando
2. Adrian Newey
3. Trulli
Love these podcasts. Rubens one my favourite!
Thank you for the show TC.
Next:
James Allen (f1 commentator)
Bertrand Gachot
sooo interesting talk!
Hi and thanks he was a bloody good driver and he's a top bloke used to reply to me on twitter all the time much enjoyed 😎
Tom Clarkson, you know you’re propping up F1 during the dark times, don’t you?
Great series of interviews. Would be great to hear any of Ron Dennis, Patrick Head, Max Mosley, Nelson Piquet, Eddie Irvine, HH Frentzen
Frentzen please
Yes, H-HF! I’d love to hear his stories about Williams, Jordan and Prost!
Nelson Piquet Sr, please

it already is
Best coach Real Madrid ever had
IndyCar legend!
Too bad they didn't talk about his IndyCar career....
That is why I think Tom is Clueless as he never covers the right stuff in his interviews
Good to hear from Mark again
Mark Blundell is awesome
Hey Tom, when are you going to get Keke Rosberg as a guest on Beyond The Grid?
Maybe you could show some different photos of the person interviewed. Lile a slideshow
When is Ron coming on the podcast?
When you can’t get Martin brundell so you get the closest thing
DI Blundell done reporting :)
thx tc!
Mark Blundell not Martin Brundle. April fooled? But Martin Brundle has been mentioned.

I always related Mark to Indycars and the Motorola brand rather than F1... yup, I started watching races at the end of the 90’s...
Yeah I agree, he and arch rival Alex Zanardi were my favourite drivers of that time.
do one with NELSON PIQUET, (the old man, not the JR) :D
Nice so cool

Nice #1
Mark Blundell

Anything about the current impact
Hey its the backmarker from btcc!
Derek Warwick next please!
I wonder does Blundell ever regret giving up the Williams test seat too soon seeing as helped Hill secure a top seat.
@Marc P what did he say I've only limited time at the moment, or roughly where about a is it in the podcast thanks in advance.
