Whenever a lot of people hear the name Lawnboy, they think of Lawn Mowers. However, as you and a lot of your viewers know, Lawnboy made a lot of different pieces of equipment. Although the snow blower you featured was a push type, they also made self propelled models. I have been collecting Lawnboy equipment for close to thirty years. My collection has grown large and I just wish that there was a museum I could donate them to. You also talked about parts being harder and harder to find, I have, on my at last check, accumulated 438 different NOS parts which I have drawn on to help fellow Lawnboy collectors.
I just want to take a minute to thank you taryl, because you have taught me so much about the old technology. I ran into an old chainsaw that just needed the points cleaned, everything else worked great.
When I first started finding your videos, usually looking up how to fix something, I thought, "what's this gimmick acting bs, I don't have time for this!" but you know what?! Now that is my favorite part :) You guys are hilarious and also super informative, I still learn how to fix something and have fun while learning.
Taryl I don't do small engine repair or much of any repair. But at 73 y.o. I enjoy looking over your shoulder as you work and listening to your explanations. It reminds me of working with my Daddy 60 - 65 years ago. I think you are one of the best you tube channels. You put at lot into your plot lines too. I hope your subscribers will take off and you'll hit 1M.
When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat, making beer. Always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway." The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.
I admire your selfless shows in spite of a lot of effort you put into it, still doing it with a lot of chumor for which these shows give many young congratulations and run this channel as long as possible.
I have fond memories of the same model machine my dad bought back then. Dad also had a gold 1958 Lawnboy self-propelled mower. No one in our neighborhood had a snowblower back then. Somewhere around 1964 we got the first snowblower on the block. I was 6 or 7 when we got it, I was intrigued by the shiny red snowblower and watched my dad use it, but never allowed near it when running. There was no room for discussion on that rule either. From brand new the engine was always a challenge to start cold, but dad knew Lawnboy and other small engines, it clearly was not his inability to start it. After doing some checking into the hard starting, the dealer swapped the engine under a recall, due to hard starting. After that the replacement engine was fine. Then comes the year of the 1967 snow in Chicago. Being a brilliant 9 year old boy, I left some old spark plugs on our driveway,. Dad hit them with the snowblower, rendering it damaged and unusable. The spark plugs were given to me after dad tuned up our 59 Impala, and now one or more had jammed in the auger chain, twisting the frame out of whack but not damaging the gearbox. The shear bolt did no good when the chain jams on the sprocket. After that mishap we had no snowblower during that 67 massive snowfall. My dad did have a noticeable annoyed look that whole week too. Dad could do almost anything with tools and repaired the snowblower a short time later, it worked perfectly after. I ran it for many years when I was older. After buying a new Toro a few years prior, I finally sold the still running fine Lawnboy at a garage sale in the 80’s, as I recall. My dad has been gone over 20 years now. This video really brought back memories. Thanks for this project video, I enjoyed seeing, and hearing that sweet Lawnboy snowblower motor again.
sure have come a long way in technology and safety....loved the sparks coming off the cee ment when you first started the beast up.....OSHA and UL would have a field day with that machine today...great fix Taryl
Holy cow a snow boy Used one in the winter of 1965 to clear a outdoor hockey rink Our grade 5 teacher would start it and we were on our own to finish the job It really tried to clear the snow but was pretty useless at clearing deep snow but the thing never quit One hour later it would be be out of fuel and the rink would be half done Our teacher would take it back to the hardware store and the owner would fuel it up and bring it back for the afternoon Boy was it cold - kept warm by pushing this this around Never quit throughout a tough Canadian winter and this was when 2 stroke oils were trash Some days you wonder how stuff keep working Keep up the good work Love from the grass ( and snow ) rats 😮

My dad specialized in Lawn Boy. He repaired dozens of them in the 1980's. He got some from the dump. The aluminum bodies cracked easily and ruined the mowers. Dad would salvage the engine and mount on a good frame. Never saw a Snow Boy before. Works surprisingly well in light snow.

OMC made Lawn Boy back in the day. They made Johnson and Evinrude outboards. The coil/points/condenser are OMC outboard parts. You can still get them from Sierra aftermarket. The carb is OMC made also.
Briggs used to have a 3'' tall hexagonal nut you would screw down on the threaded crank, you would screw it almost all the way down, strike it with a ball peen hammer and the flywheel would break loose. This was in the late 60's early seventies. Really enjoy your videos. thanks.
Back in the late nineties an old neighbor gave me the edger version of that,, it was an orange one and absolutely in mint cosmetic condition but oh did I need that coil !!! I got it running really nicely but the second it was fully hotted up she went nuts , bad coil,, the coil looked horrific... There was no one around who had one and I had no Internet to make it happen. A few years later around 2003 I sold that beautiful thing on eBay to a guy in Louisiana for $370.00 plus shipping..
I restored an Evinrude Aquanaut, it is a surface compressor that is used for diving, it uses the Lawn Boy D400 engine and I've been faced with the same difficulties, I completely rebuilt the engine and the compressor. It have been a real challenge to find parts for that machine as it have been produced from 1966 to 1970 only so I've had to conjugate and fabricate some parts to succeed to bring back that machine to life. that video represents the difficulties to work on machinery that is out of production for a very long time very good video
I grew up with both a lawn boy and snow boy. We swapped the recoil from one to the other as the seasons changed. I think it was marked Iron Horse in top. Great watching your videos about new and old equipment.
Good Video, I remember the old Lawn Boy commercials when they were new!! I'm from Louisiana so we didn't see any snow bower ad's but we Shure saw lots of lawn mowers.
I have an early 1970s Montgomery Ward vertical shaft snowblower that looks similar in design...I'm about to tear it down to do general maintenance and repairs so this should be helpful. Thank you guys
Lawn Boy actually made a self propelled version of this snowblower. I don't think it was too reliable though I remember it had metal wheels my buddy's grandfather had one. He, my friend's dad, and my dad all worked at Johnson Outboards in Waukegan. Those old C engines were tough. Great video Taryl.
Pretty cool that your dad worked at OMC.I’m still running a 1983 Johnson 150 on a Ranger Bass boat- my dad bought it new when he retired- it was stored indoors it’s whole life. I met Ralph Evinrude (co- founder of OMC along with Mr. Johnson when I lived in Florida in the mid 70s- pretty neat guy.
@@johnjaeger5976 he made a good living there for sure. He retired in 86 after 33 years. A lot of my friends were Johnson Motor brats like me. We had a boat when I grew up. And what kind of motor did we have? You guessed it. A Chrysler. 😂😂

Good advice Taryl, always do your best to test your equipment in a condition closest to "real world conditions" so long as you can do so safely. Learned that lesson a few times as lad before an elder showed me, no where nearly as kindly as Taryl might I add, the trouble and added work I was causing myself back then.
That was legit one of the funnier intro skits I've seen! As for the snowblower... seems to bog down pretty easily, the snow you had there seemed to be about the limit of what it'd handle.
i made a set of ski's for my 45 " Cub Cadet Man-Snowblower...it was hard to use before i got a layer of packed snow on my gravel driveway... down too low and digging as i turned...i tried wheels..which were ok straight but turning was worse..then made up the ski's out of 1" wide flat bar and bend them to match the bottom of auger frame....and welded a nut inside the frame and angle iron with a bolt and spacers..it installs in minutes and removes as quickly too...works great and turns perfectly on any surface...once i have a hard base i remove to clean lower to base... it should have had wider shoes from factory...

Is it just me, or does it look like the pull cord could be re-routed through another hole on the side of the pull-cord housing where the carb is? Make for easier starting & quick adjustments.

Lawnboy engines are great for plugged exhaust ports. They liked quiet (restrictive) mufflers. I've seen one chock full of carbon from the old school 2 stroke oil.
I had a 1961 it said snow boy right on it and it was brown in color. Believe it or not it had really good power if you had it tuned up perfect. When you put a heavy load on it it would really dig down and go.
That coil looks exactly like a 1960s Johnson/Evinrude coil. EDIT: That would explain why it says OMC on the side of the tank.. I didn't know they were owned by OMC back then, crazy.

Made back when machines were versatile. Combination snowblower, wood chipper and concrete resurfacer.
Yea now they want to sell you 3 different machines that you have to replace every other year bc of bad build quality.

My grandmother loved Lawnboy mowers. She had several over the years that I can remember. Never seen a Snowboy before.
Didn't get my first snow thrower till the early 1990s when I was in my 50s. But I really enjoy learning about the oldies. You do a great job . Thanks

We got one in the shed. The chute thing would always blow off and it would turn into a snow fountain. Never getting rid of it
The exhaust helps to thaw out the auger chain.
Looks like Taryl has a case of Recoil Elbow. Hope its not serious. Keep up the great content

I love the old Lawn-Boy 2-stroke mowers. Those Gold Series really have an appetite for grass. Put in in 3rd gear and it pulls you for a run.

Can't beat old technology. Tear down, clean, grease, reassemble, and adjust. Works 99% of the time.

Lawnboy engines are great for plugged exhaust ports. They liked quiet (restrictive) mufflers. I've seen one chock full of carbon from the old school 2 stroke oil.
I had a 1961 it said snow boy right on it and it was brown in color. Believe it or not it had really good power if you had it tuned up perfect. When you put a heavy load on it it would really dig down and go.
That coil looks exactly like a 1960s Johnson/Evinrude coil. EDIT: That would explain why it says OMC on the side of the tank.. I didn't know they were owned by OMC back then, crazy.
