I saw Joe Ely open up for The Clash back in 1984 at Red Rocks with my brother. My brother passed away this week. Joe Ely singing this brings back great memories of my brother.

I saw Joe open for the Clash at the Armadillo World Headquarters back in the late 70s. The two bands played separately and together and put on a show that was unsurpassed.

I was lucky to see Joe in a small club in 1993. Opening for him - Lucinda Williams. Now, THAT was a killer show! Hadn’t heard of either, but a big fan of both ever since. Saw Lucinda several times after, but, unfortunately, the only time I saw Joe live.

I love Joe! Met him in about 2004 in Chicago. We hung out and drank beers after his set. Great guy. Had no idea about his Clash history!

I met him in a bar in Camden (London) in 1980 when he was on The Clash tour.

This must be a common story! My buddy lived in Austin in the '80s and met Joe once or twice then; around 2009 we hung out at a bar after a Flatlanders show at the theatre next door (on Joe's suggestion; he said he didn't want to go back to the hotel) -- He even bought us a round. I was a big fan from 1987 on; bought Lord of the Highway after reading the Rolling Stone review. It was great to share a real moment and discover what a nice guy he is.

Joe has the coolest cowboy voice! Not a polished classical voice with vibrato like Marty Robbins, but like an authentic cowboy. As if Billy The Kid was a singer!
