Met Joe in 1971. He turned me on to a house he and Butch rented on 10th street. They moved over to Ave W and I moved off the AF base with some local guys into that house. It's gone now. Jimmie Dale Gilmore lived next door, and I spent most of my time with the local folks. I went to the base to do my job and then came back to town. Lubbock was awesome. The music was incredible!!!!!!!!
There was a time when I wanted to BE Joe Ely…there’s only one Joe Ely. From the mid 80’s through a good bit of the 90’s his songs, his bands, and the way he leads a band loomed large, a luminary. During that time, nobody did it like Joe! His influence was…by the I met him in the mid 90’s I’d sang and played his songs in so many little road houses…too many to count, his songs always met with admiration. He was standing near the bar, very unassuming. I walked up and introduced myself. I’d met a few of my heroes by that time, and I must admit, it can be sketchy at best. They rarely live up to the idealized image in ones head, a nearly impossible thing to live up to. As I approached him, I was wreck, not knowing what he may be like in the flesh. My nervousness on full display, as I extended my hand, he seemed to sense my…he reached out, resting his hand on my shoulder as if to say, it’s ok kid. The tension eased, and I expressed my gratitude. Sharing the stories of having sang his songs to many…he laughed, and said he met some guys up in Boston who play his songs better than he does. As I said, very unassuming…he carried himself with the utmost dignity, grace, and respect. As my girlfriend and I walked off into the night, she looked at me and said, you’ve chosen your heroes well. Meeting Joe Ely, a wonderful experience I’ll always remember. Here’s to the tower of Song, and the great Joe Ely! Cheers, Thanks,
As Joe's music and performing evolved, he added / changed band members to reflect the growth. It worked. Grissom is awesome here but Joe keeps on to this day.
grissom was a soulfull fire breathing dragon back in these days with ely, what is it with these cats from austin where does the tone come from? if its in the water please send me some.
Lubbock Water is chock full of minerals, I'm from there, these are my friends. I put out around 18 new songs 25 April to 21 May or so. It's in our souls . Holt was raised in Lubbock, but not Grissom, but they fronted Double Trouble in Storyville. Check out Jessie Guitar Taylor if you haven't already.

Yes
First met Joe in 1971... a very quiet fella til he gets on stage LOL!! Best performer I've ever met.
David Grissom at his absolute best.
The Joe Ely band with David Grissom officially blew the roof off that sucka!
Grissom can smoke the plank! He's absolutely layin' the lumber right here. Love the tone's he got back then from those PRS's!

This was written by Christopher Cerf when he was at the Harvard Lampoon in the 1960's.
