I Bought a BROKEN PS4 (Special Edition) From Goodwill - Can I Fix It? The matching controller was dirty but seemed to work just fine. The special edition console however, turned on but was stuck on checking the system software. That's usually caused by hard drive problems but it also could be something else.

About This Video:
You actually inspired me to get into the more technical stuff in electronics. I just bought a soldering station and using your videos as guides to not mess up. You are amazing.
Hey Steve, I'd just like to say thank you! I've gotten into tech repair thanks to your helpful (and addictive) videos! I bought a broken PS4 the same model as this one for £40 (forgot the exact model number, but its the PS4 with the physical buttons rather than touch-sensitive) and I sold it off yesterday for £120! I've been practicing a lot on different things - Gameboy Advance, PS3, Wii, and I've got a PS2 Slim I'm looking forward to fixing!
Anyways yeah I just want to say thank you for getting me into repairing, I enjoy it a lot and I know the things I spend time fixing will go on to people who will have great experiences with them rather than filling up the junkyard
Steve, it amazes me how consistently you put the perfect amount of thermal paste! Keep up the good work, mate.
Ha, ha...thanks!
@@Tronicsfix This seems like something that would be pinned. Also, it is at the top.
There is something so satisfying about taking a nasty console and making it look almost brand new. Saving a item from the landfill and making a bit of profit is rad as heck.
my thoughts exactly
I jumped when I heard you say replace the thermal paste I honestly don’t know why. Most likely the perfect amount of thermal paste.😂😂😂😂
hahahaha!
Someone should show the guy from the verge his videos.
@@masbestiaquetu I love how you can say "the guy from verge" and everyone understands lmao
Well Thermal paste does dry up over time so replacing it is a good idea..
That feeling of satisfaction when it's all cleaned up!
that brush cleaning is very thorough, most people would use compressed air but the brush gets more of the particles out
Another great looking console, I remember the BO3 special edition, it was and probably still is one of the best looking consoles Sony made. Awesome job bringing it back to a former glory 🥳
Yep...I've always liked these.
No it is one of the UGLIEST ones out there.
Now a good looking one would be the Destiny Taken King Edition. THAT is a beautiful PS4.
It's too bad your Wrong!!
@@urukadooedwards7637 wrong? No I am not. I am NEVER wrong about anything.
Not to add to the hate but I was just thinking how its the ugliest one ever. My God... it's ugly. Days of play blue is best to me.
It's amazing how many consoles are thrown away as "broken" when it's just a failed hard drive. It takes all of 30 seconds to change it, and it's not a proprietary part.
It was this channel that inspired me to do a deep cleaning of my used Xbox One. It had a bit of a dusty smell, but it is much better now.
Nice job Steve!
Glad you enjoyed it
I was actually thinking of buying this version when it first came out. love the black n orange combo
I have it n controller its awesome
I will never get tired of watching Steve do his thing on these videos. Still amazes me how precise he is with the thermal paste and more often than not, is successful in his efforts.
Great job Steve. I want to take a minute to tell you that thanks to your work and to your youtube videos about ps4 consoles, I started my small business of cleaning consoles and everything have been great. Thank you very much!!
Wow...love hearing this. So glad to hear it!
Its funny how you dust the covers on top of the newly cleaned ps4. Love the end result.
Very impressed with the clean and precise repair work you do. Great job as always
The Most Important Part Of The Repair *Steve applies the Thermal Paste* 8:34
Agreed!
@@Tronicsfix Agreed indeed!
nice music. not distracting and quite jaunty. neat video
Glad you liked it!
I'M LITERALLY WATCHING THIS VIDEO ON THE SAME EXACT PS4 EDITION I LOVE THIS EDITION
Nice! It was because of this channel I now know how to disassemble, fix and reassemble a PS4 haha. Ty
Great to hear!
Love your videos. I haven't owned a gaming console before but you give me hope man thanks.
The ability to replace drives like that on this gen of consoles makes a tone of sense.
You repair really in-depth 👍
PS4?? Special edition!? I’m definitely saving this video to watch later after I done my in-game hardest challenges.
I always love watching Tronics’ repairs and fixes as I’m always learning things
Thanks for watching!
As always keep up the good work, I've bought quite a few broken systems from goodwill "mainly ps1, dreamcast, Ps2, OgXbox systems" 99% of the time all they needed was a good cleaning, laser replacement and/or some lubrication.
Great work ! its interesting That JLCPCB sponsor you ( I use them a lot ) as you have never made one for the channel and most of your viewers probably don't do there own designs, that's great that they do !...cheers.
I know this is an older video, but when you check eBay prices, you have to consider the eBay fee of 13% on sale price + shipping. It was great video and I love what you do mate.
I went straight to goodwill when you posted this
The liquid seems to come from the sticks itself. I noticed the same on my DS4 after I haven't used them in months because of PS5😉
Yes, that's true. Strange
My DS3 does that because I use my DS4's when I play PS3 every so often so my DS3 never gets used
That liquid on the sticks is Oil that Sony puts under the surface of the stick, when you stop using the controller for a long time it starts to seep through and that's the result
0:06 first off, that box in GREAT shape. Shoulda seen the one I got Wednesday. Looked liked fell of truck on HWY doing 80, then when come to stop after rolling, bouncing, etc...was hit by another truck before picked up. Than looked like was stepped on, actually had a shoe/boot print in it😅 (seriously, not joking); and there literally wasn’t one place that “didn’t” have tape on it (think after all the damage, they had to tape to keep box together 🤦🏼).
BUT, yep, always a but, 😉, b/c the person packed it so well inside, NOTHING WAS DAMAGED, not one thing. Had thick bubble wrap, dense foam, and they even reinforced corners w/ cardboard braces using hot glue (from what looked like). So, pretty awesome imo, that nothing was damaged, and what was inside was a bunch of replacement “chips” for MOBO, electronic repair, etc...and everything tested 100% working.
Where am I going w/ this novella, would be curious to see the “state” at which you receive some of your boxes from ppl, and what used to “cushion” device/part inside during shipping. Bet ya got some good stories 😉😆
Cool was a HDD issue and easy to fix, also like that you 7:25 clean the rollers and felt parts of disc drive, as some don’t do that for refurb’d or even factory refurb’d devices👍🏻
Cheers✌🏻
so satisfying watching your videos getting resurrected.
I've watched a lot of your Ps4 repairs ,you'd think I'd be an expert at this stage,but I ain't.
Nice, the ps4 I own! Watched tons of your videos to fix it numerous times. Love it
Well this is sick bringing a good console back to life
It's mind-boggling how PS4 hardware still holds its value in after market !! guess the new CFW and PS5 being rare to get
They really are holding their value well.
Good thing he linked a hard drive because my PS4 had issues with it. Thanks 🙏🏼
Oh cool. Let's go! Lovely looking console. Simple but quality
After years of doing repairs, I'm pretty much a WD HD fanboy... but anything is better than Toshiba :D
I really like these console videos.
Glad you enjoy them. It's fun seeing these consoles come back to life and get cleaned.
Nice job Steve keep up the hard work!
Thanks! Will do!
This video is just what I needed I have this ps4 and needed a video of someone opening it so I could see how it is done...and I couldn't find someone opening this one until I found your channel lol
Idk what it is but i love seeing you clean and rollers! Its satisfying 😌
my favorite type of content to see on youtube please dont stop making videos i just can never get enough everything you post interest me 🔥❤
Thank you so much for watching!
Sameee😁
Nice work Steve always enjoy your videos and the tips in them great job 👍
Glad you like them!
8:32 When you did the most important part of the whole repair and applied the thermal paste i was like -
"Oh no! That looks like way too much thermal paste!!!!!"
But then you said that it was the perfect amount of thermal paste and i was like -
"Jesus. That was lucky. It was so close being too much!"
Lol...hilarious!
I love these cleaning videos! Really feeds into my OCD! But in a healthy way 😉 Great video Steve!
Reason why I see this channel: to se how Steve puts the perfect amount of thermal paste every time 🌡️💉
I thought goodwill didn't sell items they knew were not working.
They sell lots of broken stuff...especially online.
Not so good will after all.
@@Tronicsfix I've always liked shopping there! Never thought they had a website, guess everything has one now. 😆
The one i managed we made it our business not to. We even put some on display
Awesome fix and I am glad to see Good Will does a good job with used systems even though it was slightly dirty
Your videos are so relaxing. I used to work on fixing Xbox 360 consoles back in the day but I stopped because I just wasn't very good at it compared to how Microsoft was fixing them.
When my ps4 pro hard drive got corrupted I used the sea gate barracuda 1tb Hard drive. Good video Steve👍
Yep, that's a good hard drive!
Yeah ps4 is a buggy console
@@astronomical3342 I know right I was playing madden then my ps4 cut off. When I turned it back on it was stuck in a loop so I got a new hard drive, installed system software and boom it worked
Hey Steve. Awesome job on the restoration! What kind of thermal paste do you use if you don't mind me asking?
I normally use Arctic Silver 5
It's amazing how many issues with consoles just seem to be with hard drives that prevent things from running properly. I feel like the average owner doesn't realize this and will just write the whole console off as broken when they actually have a machine thats still working quite well!
What was that little block u plugged in after you put the new harddrive in, is that something I need to install a new drive myself?
Perfect ad timing the second you press the button and it beeped the ad started lol also i got this PS4 lol
Love the videos. Going to do an Xbox 1 Controller LED change soon. Cant wait.
Glad you like them! Good luck with the mod!
Hello I posted on your site asking about the controller to this conceal. figured id comment to see if you would see it her first . also love the videos
this guy doesn't deserve the hate Steve don't look at the haters you're doing better than them in life 🙏
Hi Tronics FIX !!I WATCH you from South Europe !!
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
A coworker gave me a ps4 in pieces and thanks to your vids I fixed it.
Where exactly do you live I have never seen a game console at a goodwill before thats a cool find loved the video btw
This one came from their online store
cleaning electronics is oddly satisfying.
"I'm gonna clean this up a little"
me: "sure Ill get the flamethrower"
The liquid he was referring to was the oils breaking down in the plastic thumb sticks. This is common as it has happened on my PS3 controllers many times... you just need to wipe them clean with windex and paper towels to remove the excess oils. Plastic contains oil.
This is a productive channel. Nuff said
Prices on the Goodwill online site are absolutely insane. Way more expensive than eBay.
They can be crazy high...but sometimes you can get a deal.
Pssst dont skip ads and make him 1 million subscriber
What i find to help get scuffs off of consoles are magic erasers and Clorox Scrub Singles Heavy Duty Scouring Pads.
Awesome video, Steve! i have learned a lot watching your videos. thank you.
Your video about "Fixing 13 Broken PS5" almost makes me jealous
Although he did spend alot of money to get them.
Ha, ha...that was a fun video!
@@Tronicsfix Mr4k was legit triggered with that video lmfao
When you cleaned the plastic covers on top of the still open, freshly cleaned PS4 I died a little inside.
Was thinking the same thing
Me too!
Gooey liquid on thumbsticks: sugar absorbing water from the air.
I never understand how you do such a great job cleaning the insides of the systems, then clean the dirty parts on top of the system you just cleaned. Why not move the newly cleaned system off to the side where you had the dirty parts sitting while you clean the dirty parts?
Couldn't you try to reinstall the system software on the old hard drive first. Maybe it got corrupt and just needed to be reinstalled? Great videos.
hai steve my brother is a big fan of you and i wanted to tell you your really awesome
I wanted to say "that is too much thermal paste" but it is actually a perfect amount
Dude your phenomenal at what you do ✌.
The liquid on the thumb sticks... the rubber that sony uses to provide grip sometimes starts to deteriorate and release oils.. picked up my ps3 controller after 2 years of no use and the sticks wear wet like that.
Nice on steve always a pleasure..
Nice tear down of a great PS4!
Always the perfect amount or thermal paste!!
Have you considered re-painting the scratches on the top cover with black color?
Forgot the link the Harddrive in the description
Fixed it. Thanks for the heads up!
Omg that ps4 is soooo clean!!!
I have one myself. I love it :D
Hey, tell me why don`t you use vacuum cleaner (small one or at low speed) to clean all dust from inside of console? It is easier way and when performed carefully it is far better then brush it away...
The thumbsticks sweat, mine did the same thing. I traded mine in because of the stick drift
You can also use paintbrush for cleaning.😁
That is the most beautiful ps4 I have ever seen.
Good job Bro🔥
Hey Steve I love your channel and have learned alot from you, but I have a question " what kind of flux do you personally use and when doing ic chips or video chips what temp do you set your hot air station to?
This is the only repair guy I ever seen that doesn't keep the screws on a magnetic mat and separate. Epic repairs tho.
You cleaned the covers...over the machine you just finished cleaning?
I got the same console! I like the design and COD as well. Only problem with my ps4 was that it runs super slow
Link to that little system software and all the data on it to restore to Original FW would be dope. Want that usb hub. Pretty cool @Steve
I use an air compressor to clean out heatsink fins and fans.
Thank you you just saved my life my PS4 is fixed 🙂
That oily thumbstick its cause by room temperature or heat. I got other controllers that seldom using it got those sticky oil on it too.
These are the best videos
So glad you enjoy them!
I have the same model ps4, works pretty good got it when bo3 first came out
Nice video, came from DankPods lol
When you said let's go to ebay, I went straight to the description to click on the link....
