At about 1:10:10 I discuss the Colorado theater shooter and some various versions of the story that I have heard/read/seen. I asked people to post links to sources if they had better sources of info and a few people have, thank you. It appears that the theater was only less than ten miles from the shooters residence and there was perhaps only one theater closer than where he went. As I said, there are different versions of the story. If anyone has found additional info, please post a link.
My solution is to all of the guns, confiscate them by force, and then legally there will be no more mass shootings or gun crime. Because when government executes millions of dissidents, that isn't a crime.
his in-attention to detail is appaling, scary, disturbing, disgusting...where is my thesaurus... appaling, frightfull astounding, terrifying, terrifying, awful, dire, dishearteningly terrible dreadful horrible shocking horrific and wrong think about what you can do in his mouth, make it worse. that is what he is spewing on us

My job is what is called a scopist, and I listen to depositions while reading through the transcripts that court reporters generate to check those transcripts for accuracy. If everybody in the legal field or on the witness stand as a deponent spoke half as well as Paul Harrell does my job would be 10 times easier. Paul Harrell is one of the most articulate and eloquent people I have listened to, and I honestly have not noticed a speech impediment.
They don't represent you so they will never solve your problems. Politicians are managers who determine how to allocate your money to the megaconglomerate corporate interests. One year it's pharmaceuticals, the next it's Lockheed-Martin, etc.
I'm from switzerland. Lethal tools are relatively easy to get and numerous, and we have nearly no mass shooting. I've been to te US several times and what hit me, is how much more people are excluded in the US than in Switzerland. By excluded I mean people with no hope to ever have a career, or a family. And very quickly, in the US, i had the impression that if you are percieved as a looser, you will be excluded, instead of having people trying to get you back on track. I'm not saying that being excluded is an excuse to shoot at people, but bellonging to people is surely effective at preventing you from shooting at them. I don't know how you can change the culture to include (and i don't mean woke bs, but really being a part of a community that try to include you in its future) more people. Maybe promote apprenticeship instead of highschool? (if you don't wan't to go to highschool, you can start working at 15 in switzerland, but your boss is recquired to teach you the job, and you get a well recognized diploma). This helps a lot of young to get a good start in life. There are probably a lot other possibility. I really wish you americans to solve this problem.
Agreed. A lot of these people who do these atrocities come from broken homes, without a father, we’re bullied, and “didn’t feel like they belonged.” Instead, these young men turn to gangs, terrorist or extremist ideologies, or start following people who encourage these violent acts so they can make a name for themselves. It gives them some kind of “belonging.” People in this country use to have that in their home families and their church families. Now, the nuclear family is shamed, fatherless homes have increased exponentially, and churches are seeing their attendance shrink. And politicians and community activists only like focusing on the gun and not working to restore healthy family homes.
You are not able to buy multiple AR-15 and boxes of ammo in Switzerland as soon as you turn 18. With no background check, no licensing. The easy access to weapons is an issue, along with what this guy is saying. Switzerland does back ground checks and you would need a special permit to buy that kind of weaponry. They are liberal there compared to most of Europe. But they still have permits and background checks. This Country does nothing like that. So many back doors into getting weapons. Can just walk in and walk out with one. Easy access is a HUGE issue.
It's the damn america cities that are having these "mass shootings" they will label almost anything that is a mass shooting as long it's more then 3+ people. But they (news media) won't say most of them are gang violence or only give them a 2 minute headline without context. The issues are school shooting. Ofc no country is perfect. China for it's massive stabbings in school (look it up) u.k with is violence with knives. That's a common traits. Where countries don't allow citizens guns..their weapons change not their motives

Watchin videos like this as a european that lives in the north of germany is realy sad We have little to none of those things Imagin your little one gets shot in the face while at school
I’m a person who likes police, and I had a conversation with a girl in school. She is a young black woman who we were working together on some art piece. We got to the topic of police officers and she didn’t like them a great deal. So, she wanted to “educate me” on how terrible police officers are. She was loud, and she also was putting words in my mouth that I didn’t say. I didn’t want to argue (and I’m not good at arguing) with her so I remained passive and just giving my thoughts why I like police officers and why I think they are important. Although, she did tell me “you’re not black so you don’t understand.” And that not all police officers are bad, but she acted like the first police officer that sees her would kill her. We couldn’t really have a calm rational discussion unfortunately.
Uvalde there was a cop outside the school with a rifle and watched the killer who was already wanted walk casually into the school with a rifle slung over his shoulder. He had time to call in for permission to shoot and was denied. That whole fiasco needs to be properly investigated.
Hopefully the federal investigation will tell the truth & get positive results. Investigations by the State of Texas can not be trusted. Officials have reversed positions, Arrendondo's record has been sanitized, Abbott only cares about being made to look bad, etc, ad nauseum.
Cops don't have to ask for permission to shoot. There were over a hundred cops outside of the classroom standing around with their thumbs up their butts for over an hour while the shooter was in a classroom murdering kids.
Frankly, what the police did at Uvalde was nothing short of criminal incompetence. Those people need to be more than fired; they need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
I’ve always found Paul’s cadence and manner of speech to convey strength and thoughtfulness. Very reassuring and a position of confidence. Perfect for the weighty topic, excellent as always Paul.
i don't know. i found some things a bit harsh. like when he said that if you engage in dialog that doesn't pertain a solution that you supposedly have blood on your hands. i don't really see how that is supposed to start off a healthy discussion or what that added to the overall discussion. i feel like he didn't come from a place of understanding and concern about this issue, but rather a place of frustration about people's ignorance about firearms. i can imagine it would feel like he's belittling people that disagree with him and not taking their concerns seriously because they are ignorant about guns.
@@downey2294when engaging in a discussion it is everyone’s own obligation to inform themselves as best as possible before forming an opinion. It’s quite obvious that most people don’t do this, especially when it comes to guns. So yes, of course a marine and UA-cam firearm content creator will be slightly annoyed when someone perpetuates easily falsifiable myths about guns. Also I don’t think he was belittling anyone, that’s a bit of a stretch, nor did he shift direct blame on those engaging in conversation. He was simply saying that we need to find solutions and not waste time chatting about it like gossip.
@@downey2294 lmao I can tell you are a softy lib just from your post alone. Don't worry about this video, honey. Men will figure out a solution to this 😂
@@downey2294 He was trying to say that, in order to discuss solutions, we have to first stop reflexively attacking the other side even when they say things we agree with. I've personally seen this happen a lot from both sides. The frustration about people being clueless about guns is due to how that is used to dishonestly frame the problem and push "solutions" that actually have nothing to do with the problem
Paul is the most non-judgmental guy you'll ever meet, but he said shame on you to the Uvalde law enforcement who failed to act. When Paul says shame on you, you've effed up monumentally- galactically.
Very moderate response indeed to cowardice. If they had stood back and watched armed soldiers die nobody would hesitate to call them cowards. However it is not the first time, such a response is common. It destroys his solution though: more armed men. I predict this: it is only a matter of time before the shooter is actually the school guard. This is because for the man to be useful he has to be trained until he is a killer himself.
I’m just relieved to see a man think and speak clearly. That’s a damn good place to start. Paul will very successfully move forward and keep this very important discussion alive.
The increase in Mass shootings have been developing for a long time. The root causes have also been ignored. The only reason is there are reasons for the conditions to have been created. The media and the legal systems does not want those reasons addressed and or brought to the forefront. Funny how there is a correlation in draft and when the draft went dormant. Then the volunteer military replaced it. From 1963 to 1974 there were 12.5 million veterans. That means there was a forced firearms training instruction. Some of it on the two way range. Four of the 4 military age uncles in 1941 I had, set foot in both sides of the high velocity lead virus areas. Funny how coming back to the US did not elevate to a lot more shoot 'em ups. There are more reasons, but my typing fingers are tired. He is right there are more mass shootings in the last 12 months, than in all of the 1950s. Repeating arms and semi auto arms have been around for almost 100 to150 years. So how do you stop it? It is like if you want to stop traffic deaths. Just make everything move with human feet only. Also that would be a no carbon, no Co2 and no nuke solution. Now all we need is unarmed 7.5 billion volunteers to make that work. The other armed 500,000 million would be needed to make all the 7.5 Billion go to work every day. Oh and the state of the art assault rifle in 1776 was a Brown Bess. There would not be a United States if owning one in the states was against the King's laws. Probably a lesson the the Monarchy has not forgot. Now my fingers really need Icy Hot.
I’m sure you won’t see this comment buried in here Paul, but I’d like to say that you are one of the most well spoken people I’ve ever heard before despite the impediment (I honestly didn’t notice until you said something) thank you for all of your content and the way you conduct yourself and thank you for your service.
I second this! Paul is one of those guys who's content is definitely unique to the world of YT and the view he comes from is not biased vs others. Paul is the kinda man who's mindset is what we need to run our country. If we did, I think we'd have a government our founding fathers intended us to have.
I still can't notice you having a speech impediment knowing it's there, which of course not to say it's something you struggle with. I wanted to add that I enormously respect your "all I know is I know nothing" attitude
I wish we had people like Paul in our government. Not because of his political views, but because he actually uses critical thinking skills and tries to figure out solutions to problems and why the problems are happening in the first place.
Voters dont want a politician who thinks critically and takes 2 hours to explain the answer to a complex problem. They want someone to say "Hey this problem is really simple and has an easy answer"
I'm still somewhat young and dumb so I could be wrong about this. Government = Legislation, Execution, and Justice, within the limits of The Constitution Politics = Popularity contests for power despite The Constitution The man that is best suited for the job, doesn't want power, and has no desire for politics. However, there no longer seems to be even a small department in government that doesn't have politics.
Paul Harrell - one of the VERY FEW people I will happily sit and listen to for an hour and a half, and pay attention to every detail to try to glean as much of his wisdom as I can.
I never noticed anything about paul's speech. English ain't my first language though... I now think that telling people you have a speech impediment is an effective way to make them listen very closely :D
Hi! I am your counterpart. I am partly deaf. If I had a dime for every time I asked someone to repeat something and they got mad or defensive-- I would be a rich man. I once worked with a guy from Fiji who had a heavy Indian accent and had several phone conversations that I asked him to repeat several times since I couldn't understand him. He didn't get mad or neither did I. People that have speech problems usually take pains to make their thoughts known in a concise way. They are always worth listening to more than people that don't have speech problems. Stand proud and have a good day.
You say you distain giving lectures, but your lectures are some of my favorite episodes. You could be a college professor and I'd take any class you ever teach.
Amen. I'm pretty over-educated and Mr Harrell is an excellent teacher when compared to all the college & post-grad teachers I've had. When he starts with the "why?" he shows himself as a fine instructor. Many teachers teach to memorization standards and don't encourage a focus on the "why?"
@@seanoneil277 Correct, and that is exactly "why" many students lack any critical thinking skills whatsoever. It also teaches blind obedience to that authority; memorize these answers, or you'll fail, and we won't give you a piece of paper that you paid unbelievable amounts of money for which often turns out to be worthless anyway.
@@youbetterwakeup2449 It's truly amazing to me, at this point in my life and working career, how many high-GPA people (cum laude, summa cum laude, magna cum laude, or near perfect 4.0) that I've met, worked with, or had as adversaries in litigation, who are inept at problem solving, because they only have memorized infotrinkets, and have never learned how to think. In contrast, the average American hears "double-Ivy" (Harvard BA + Yale JD, for example) and assumes the person is nearly a genius. My experience does not bear out this surrogate notion of intelligence, genius, or well-educated. The fancy prestige degree doesn't guarantee intellectual high-capacity or high-calibre. It guarantees only prestige among those who don't know better.
Got here through the recommendation of the video announcing your passing by yourself. Thanks for everything ,that I can quite clearly tell, that you did to give your thoughts and opinions along with the facts you brought. May you rest in Peace and I look forward to looking through the rest of your work!
I had a course in college called "Introduction to Argument". Paul Harrell just gave me a refresher on some of the key points of this course without knowing he was. No matter what you believe. He makes some very valid points on why no resolution comes forward. Because individuals refuse to argue objectively and with the intention of actually solving a problem.
I recall that in Plato (Timaeus?) The point is made that if both parties in a dialogue are not committed to seeking the truth - no valid solution can be arrived at.
A lot of these people who refuse to argue, and always ask questions in bad faith, are republicans and right wing folks. Sure we have some nut cases who try to push whole agendas, but they aren’t pushing as dangerous agendas as these republicans/right wing folks. Banning books, aggressive rhetoric against LGBTQ, robbing women of their rights, willfully ignoring mental health issues, inciting the culture war to distract from classism. These folks refuse to argue objectively. Like, at all.
Those courses I believe are the sum knowledge on common sense throughout history distilled into a 15 week curriculum. I think the desire to make an argument leads you down a persistent road of wanting to make your point and will go through hell and back to get your point across
Arguing is the problem discussion is having different viewpoints and talking about why you believe what you believe and presenting the evidence to support your position. It does not have to be an argument.
“Please excuse my speech impediment” as he proceeds to explain a very complex subject in such eloquence that I could only hope politicians would match. Bravo.
Yeah, it is tragically common for people to be very vulnerable on their speech, even if they don't have any problem there. Have a friend, who was consistently bullied by her classmates, before we met, making her permanently insecure. She doesn't have any noticeable speech patterns that deviate from the norm. And that kind of BS makes me really angry. I have nothing but contempt for bullies.
@@erloriel These shooters exist because they're outcasts that get bullied constantly and or have no family structure that teaches them to value human life
Paul, bro. It doesn't really come off as a speech impediment. I find that a measured deliberate voice that engages listeners and encourages them to think or process, gets the most listeners. Theres also a lively but subdued spirit in how you speak. And it plays out as a thoughtful orator reading an exciting book out loud. It's one of the reasons I watch your videos. If youtube stops working for you, you should lend your voice to audio books for a living.
Yes exactly! He takes his time to eloquently formulate the thought with appropriate words. He brings the saying “think before you speak” to life! Just discovered this channel with this video and I’m enthralled.
Hey Paul, having studied English in College after a few relatively easy years as an ARMY 19D from 1990-93, I am uniquely qualified to tell you that you do not have a speech impediment that is noticeable to my ear. You are very easy to understand and you speak with the precision and grammar that most UA-camrs today lack. Your subject/verb agreement is impeccable, and putting pauses into your dialogue only makes your points more memorable. Thanks for doing what you do!
Now THIS is a show of balls unlike any I've seen. Especially in light of recent events. I'm glad someone as educated as you is speaking on the subject.
I studied this topic in graduate school from an economics/statistics perspective. I concluded that it's more complex than what simple analysis tools can show as a comprehensive cause, or causes. Essentially, the "mass shootings" that we care about discussing are always correlated with, and thus confounded by, numerous other factors that predate the idea, acceptance, and action, of a shooter. Then, of course, there is the psych phenomena of copycat events which is also a huge issue (i.e. if using box cutters wasn't used by terrorists, there would probably be more box cutter murder incidents in a copycat attempt). But Mr. Harrell, you have the most measured approach and discussion about this I've seen. As far as your speech issues go - the effort you've put in to overcome them has given you one of the best deliveries and cadences I've ever seen. I feel like you're talking to us, not at us, and that's a huge thing. As someone who stuttered up until the 9th grade (and it still comes out today every so often), respect (and envy!) to your communication and oration skills.
What I've read was that the police at Uvalde were closer in size to a _company_ than a platoon, and that they didn't just do nothing but actively stopped parents who tried to save their kids themselves. They should consider themselves lucky that them _protecting_ the shooter like that didn't incite some of the parents to open fire on _them._
I thank God I was not in their shoes, but I think if I was, I would've made them cops shoot me in order to stop me. My kids are my pride and joy and what I live for, I'd die in a heartbeat to protect them. Maybe even come up with a plan with the other parents so we can overwhelm the police this way at least one or two of us could get in there and save our children. I think that part of the shooting is one of the things that angers me the most and the fact it took a couple of off duty border agents to go in and save those kids.
@@toddk1377 I'm not a parent but I'm 100% sure I would have fired upon the police. BTW I'm a huge Punisher fan, but i fucking despise how the right, specifically the racist sexist death cultist Proud Boys are taking the Punisher skull and completely misrepresenting it. No one should want to be Frank Castle, but those pathetic fucks do, and how is this relevant? Well, the Uvalde police are the exact type of weak-willed, petrified men filled with toxic masculinity that fly Trump, Proud Boy, and "Punisher" flags wishing they were a gun-wielding hero. Not realizing there is no such thing at the end of the day, taking of human life is beyond tragic. Even as I say I would likely lose my shit on the pigs at Uvalde if i heard kids being fired upon (again, not a parent, so i imagine you feel me on that)
Yep. Uvalde is a GREAT example of why more funding to the police DOES NOT MATTER IF THE PEOPLE USING THAT FUNDING ARE USELESS. The police across the US need to be completely reformed to ACTUALLY serve their community
Paul the Legend Harrell is THE MAN, when it comes to firearms information, and general life advice. I was a little critical at first, but after listening to a few videos, I realized this guy knows more than the majority of other "guntubers".

Your use of the word seriously is perfect in this context. That's the most frustrated thing about all this. The loudest voices are simply not serious people. They are grifters and political cucks.
I've always been of the idea that these mass shooters are looking for fame in death, and that if we make it clear that no one will know your name or associate the action with the person, they might not want to do it. They want to go out saying to the world, " see what I did"
Very good point. Since the news never gets things right, if they started reporting that th e shooter was a feces eater, a bed wetter, etc. then the potential shooter might not want that kind of fame.
@@PaulHarrell bad part is the news is always looking to exploit these kinds of events , only making it more clear to mentally unstable people that they can get their 15 minutes of fame aswell. I've seen news reporters asked about this and they doge the question and say it's their obligation to cover the NEWS
My same thought. 99% of these people never achieved anything in life. It’s a shortcut to notoriety without facing repercussions (if the shooter is dispatched by any means).
But there's still a rabbit hole to that notion. A lot of those who'd resort to such reaction do so in desperation and a greater good being justification against a problem. Sometimes the outcome is all they want and infamy is of less priority. Just the idea of effecting a change and eliminating a more present issue is all the reason, no matter how short sighted it is.
One "local" infamous convicted mass murderer and terrorist, said his worst fear was that he and his actions would be forgotten. Of course newspapers reported everything and there is even a film made about it, following him through his crimes. 🤷♂
The fact that Paul keeps the malfunctions from the M1 Carbine in the video instead of removing and reshooting that sequence, and then proceeds to address it, just goes to show the depth of the scientific method he approaches topics with as well as the moral obligation he feels to deliver informative content. @@Matt-xc6sp perhaps the problem isn’t that they’re “bootlickers.” Perhaps the problem is that people have a faulty presumptive attitude of what was going on and the elements of the situation. They think the natural solution they have to the problem was available to those on scene.

I worked at a job for almost 30 years that put me in contact with many many teenagers on a daily basis. I can absolutely tell you that there is something going on in our society that is effecting the minds of young people in a negative way. I have watched the level of emotional outbursts, hair trigger tempers and lack of empathy for others go up and up. I think it might be worth trying to find out what factors are negativelly effecting young people. Wish we could work on this problem without making it political.
Allen Templeton- No one wants to think about that, they might have to blame themselves. Easier to blame video games, right-wing extremism, etc.. Bad parenting is the reason. Simple as that, but that would be the most difficult problem to solve, eh? Better just keep blaming video games and whatever else is easiest to point at. So frustrating.
Social media plays a big role in turning our society antisocial. Studies have shown that children are more prone to antisocial behavior after being allowed to get on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit. Etc.
I think personally over medication and parents and teachers being overworked has a lot to do with it. Kids mimic their parents and trusted authority figures.

As a gen z guy (out of Highschool now). I can definitely say that mental health is one of the biggest issues surrounding school shootings. My school had multiple bomb threats, we had an armed officer on duty. Luckily they caught the kids prepping for the act only weeks before they had planned on going through with it. My school had a high frequency of people with mental health issues and disabilities that really made interactions difficult with certain crowds. This one definitely touched folk in a different way but I just want to say I'm grateful for all the time you spent on it and appreciate the very measured take you offered. Here's hoping that it encourages others to look at the issue in a non-politicized way, whenever possible.
The issue is gun policy and control will always be considered political, because both parties greatly benefits from the sale and distribution of firearms everywhere. I am not anti gun, I love them and enjoy them greatly but I know that we have a toxic gun culture. A culture of both normalizing extreme violence done by firearms and introduction of that harm to children on an everyday basis. It is too deeply tied corporate interest thinking that has polluted every part of the American zeitgeist from entertainment media to the news and even to the highest branches of government. Once we disarm corporations from their ability to lobby on either side of the isle we will get closer to the idea of a fair republic, if one is even possible at this point.
Didn't expect to see you here Deviant! Love your content and Paul's of course and I couldn't agree more. Keep on keepin on mate and greetings from down here in the barren gun control wasteland that is AussieLand (we have also still had mass killings over here recently just not with guns. They are not the problem at all imho).
@@Zerklass Nope. You completely missed the part where Paul explained that large capacity semi-auto firearms were readily available and even easier (and cheaper) to get 70 years ago. It's not a gun problem, it's a societal problem. So are the mass shooters right wingers, left wingers or just nut jobs?
@@DeviantOllam Awwwww haha you're awesome mate. And thank you for making the content that you do! Been watching you and Paul's videos for years now. Love your con vids and you're videos on your own channel; also Paul's presentations are second to none of course. o7
This is the clearest, most logically prepared and presented talk I’ve ever seen on mass shootings. It gave me a lot to think about. Thank you, much appreciated.
But I didn't see him actually talking about the "Causes and Possible Solutions". Some people talked in the comments about legitimate causes, but I'll add my take on the subject. What do young males crave more than anything? A girlfriend. Particularly if they've never had one. And with the rise of social media, the percentage of young guys unable to get a girlfriend is steadily rising. Many of these guys feel hopeless for the future, and some likely feel alienated from the society in which they are not wanted by anyone. This is what really has changed dramatically since the 70s. Most girls today chase the bad boys throughout their 20s, leaving large percentage of young guys completely invisible. So I suspect that that's the main factor or at least a compounding element in what leads to most of these young men throwing their lives away in an attack on the society. I suspect that the policymakers are well aware of this problem, but ... well, what can they do about it? Nothing. And will continue to do nothing - other than perhaps institute more gun control laws, which I'm sad to admit is likely the only thing that can be done.
A girlfriend is not gonna fill that void. Most guys just wanna blow their loads without paying. Honestly I think most guys just don’t have a purpose or sense of identity in who they are or what they wanna become in a society that forces you into job and if you don’t make a certain amount of money you get left behind. That’s just my take
@@joewood3546 yeah, i didn't find this 1 and a half hour long lecture very valuable. a little informative, but damn did it take a while to arrive there. not sure about the girlfriend take though, pretty sure these people just want to watch the world burn. kali yuga
@@mac11daddy6 that's a solid take on it. You left out the feminist man hater movement that has sunk it's hooks deep into most young girls. If you are a white male under 25 and not the popular boy, you're treated like shit by their culture in most cases. These kids feel like they have no purpose, no value, no hope, and they aren't only left behind, they're ostracized and HATED. There are women advocating to euthanize their male infants because all men are bad. What does that mean for these kids when they're being preached at online? Kids are sponges. These young girls are being taught that boys are a means to an end and nothing more than a tool for them. "What can he give you?" is a common theme when it isn't straight white males are literally the devil... These kids need mental health counseling... Kids need stability, not propaganda...
@@Voidroamer Well, according to Jordan Peterson, men crave purpose, and traditionally men were finding that purpose in protecting and providing for a family, or tribe. It's likely an evolutionary adaptation that allowed our species to survive. Now many are left scrambling to find a new purpose for their lives. Technology and feminism has changed society to its core. Automation, Artificial Intelligence and overpopulation will likely soon bring the era of Universal Basic Income, where fewer of us will work, and many will subsist on this basic income. That'll be fine for a girl, but ever larger number of males will be left completely unable to compete on the dating marketplace. I think society and its laws will have to adjust to address that, and one of these adjustments will be the second amendment going the way of the dodo bird.

You're more than qualified to address this controversial topic. I enjoyed your coverage on it and how you presented it. This video remains just as relevant now as it was when it was first released. Amazing and thorough work on debunking the myths about guns with demonstrations, history and facts. Considering what was in society back then that deterred mass shootings that is not present now, or what is present now that influences mass shootings that wasn't present back then is the best matter to end the discussion on. Thank you for producing a very thoughtful and thorough video addressing this issue.
Paul I had no clue you had a speech impediment, I don't even own a gun but I watch all of your videos simply because you are so well spoken and such a pleasure to listen to.
There is something seriously wrong that of the three replies to this comment, two of them are telling a complete stranger to buy a gun (despite the fact that they did not ask your opinion or indicate any desire to own a gun). Guys, guns are not for everybody. The reasons to buy a gun are 1) because it's a hobby or 2) because you want to ability to kill (presumably for self defense). No hobby is appealing to everybody. And more importantly: Not everybody is prepared to kill somebody. Not everybody wants to go around ready to fight to the death. The mindset required to use weapons safely, responsibly, and effectively is not universal. TL;DR don't fetishize guns and don't push your fetish on strangers. You people are creepy as fuck, and probably part of the reason mass shootings have increased: Guns have become a symbol that people who feel emasculated use to prove they're tough.
All I have to say after watching this video, is that EVERYONE needs to watch it, regardless of where they stand on gun related issues. A lot of great information and material to reflect on.
the sad part is he's just preaching to the choir as most people who are anti don't want to listen and will likely not ever hear of Paul. unless you share and I share his message.
@@Nobody-11B You're falling into one of the traps he explicitly suggested you avoid. However, I listen to all of Paul's videos and particularly enjoyed the thought he put into this one. Am I anti-gun? Not even remotely. However like most of the rest of the world, I do look on with great sadness that America cannot logically work out this horrendous problem.
@@ephemeraddict yep, us Yanks have our head pretty far up our asses at the moment. I have guns too but I realize that gun control was needed yesterday.
@@ephemeraddict you summed up my opinion as a British person. Whilst I think our laws are too strict, I think America has many different layers to their problems and because they hold the right to firearms in an almost zealotry level, it means there is never any successful discourse because one side won't budge and the other side keeps asking for further concessions from the pro gun side because of the near static situation. All I know is that plenty of countries around the world also have weapons but don't have America's problems, like Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
I'm impressed Paul, one of the best presentations I've ever watched. I'm a long time subscriber and your self proclaimed speech impediment has never been an issue for me. As retired Police Officer, I sat in horror as I watched a platoon sized Police force wearing ballistic armor, armed to the teeth, who were busy threatening concerned parents against entering an active shooter scene, instead of going in to take one adolescent shooter out. The entire Uvalde Police Department should be thoroughly investigated and gutted. Any Officer on scene who refused to go in to subdue the shooter is nothing short of a coward, a disgrace to the entire law enforcement community. They should never be allowed to wear a badge ever again. As soon as you take your oath, you fully accept the possibility that the chances are you are going to be put into a situation where you will be called upon to put your own like on the line to save another. If you are unable to do that, find a different career.
What blew me away is that there isn't a law that dictates that they must act. I watched a video by Legal Eagle where he breaks down that police have "no legal obligation" to intervene in that situation. Isn't that nuts? The world we live in.
As always, Paul presents an excellent compilation of facts, logic and common sense. This presentation ought to be mandatory for all those interested in finding solutions.
Not really. He is very biased. It's like saying, there's lots of heroin overdoses, know what we need? More heroin! My example is a hard truth and I'm sure everyone here will disagree because of cognitive dissonance.
You don’t understand human psychology. Your example is also irrelevant considering heroin is a consumable that provides a prescribed effect and is highly addictive. Firearms are a tool, nothing more and nothing less. There’s a huge difference between drugs and tools. Tools are not chemically addictive, nor do they cause psychosis, or long term health effects. Doing heroin is a non violent crime, so the perpetrators of that crime are given leeway by society. Shooting someone is an inherently violent crime, so those criminals aren’t given the same leeway. What you don’t seem to grasp is how the human brain responds to stimulus. The only thing that stops criminals from committing violent crimes is the thought of being met with equal or greater violence. Understand that there is a difference between goals and an agenda. Goals are for the living. The goal of a violent criminal could be to increase their wealth through crime. An agenda, extends beyond death. The agenda of a mass shooter is to hurt/destroy as many lives as possible as a way of punishing the world. They commit these heinous crimes knowing full well that they will likely lose or take their own life as a result of their actions. They do not fear mortality the way other individuals do, what they fear is the thought of someone raining on their parade. They are most fearful of being stopped before the can throw their tantrum, before they can issue the punishment they believe society deserves. That is why they choose the locations that they choose. Soft targets in multitude, crammed into a relatively confined space. To deter mass shootings, all of society needs to be potentially armed. All law abiding citizens should be able to carry concealed in every situation to include schools. We have not reached a point in our evolution in which the species does not need a physical deterrent to commit violence. This is the reason that police, militaries, and nuclear weapons exist. It is not the gun, but the thought of intervention, that stops criminals. If every citizen has the potential to stop a crime, and the criminals know that, they will be deterred from committing the crime. I’ve lived in a 3rd world country where the criminals are the only ones with guns. Believe me that you do not want to rely on the state for your protection. They will not rescue you or your family. They will arrest and prosecute your murderer after you’re dead.
This man truly is an educator, supports himself and ideas well, and follows through with the rationale behind his thoughts, he encourages to think critically. Why can't we have legislators like this?
Because there is to much stupid people in your United Stats of America. When you have maybe 10 shootings in gun-free zones every year… And the fix is make the hole Union gun-free, so we can get 1000 times more shootings every day. Lest see of they get zero shoots next year. No Biden has taken away guns from more people that are sitting ducks and sheep. And only can wait to get killed… Just like we have it here in most of Europe, and most other places in the world. Why do you think we have the globalists, that want to take over the hole world, and make much more rules on normal people… Take all of our belongings… Not only the guns.
I think he is lying to a degree. Just look at when he talking about the manipulation of data on mass shootings. He say that the data is manipulated because it include things like gang on gang violence, and KKK and nazis having a disagreement. He wants to remove those cases because they do not fit his idea of what a mass shooting is. This is in direct violation of the definition of what a mass shooting is. A mass shooting is when 3 to 4 people are victims of gun violence. It say nothing about how or why they are victims. A drug dealer getting wounded is a victim, even if he was the one starting the fight. The fact he wants to remove these cases from the past shows he isn't totally honest. Why are these removed using arbitrary reasons? Is a drug deal gone bad not a good enough mass shooting to be called a mass shooting? Seems like manipulation of data if you ask me.
Paul, this is without a doubt the best video I’ve ever seen put out on the real solution to mass shootings. I just hope this reaches a large enough audience…so that’s on us comments section. Share this video.
Unfortunately, Paul Harrell's excellent thought process is completey is made irrelevant by the fact that it is framed as a debate between two sides. There is not debate are there are not two sides. The managers will decide what to do about guns based on which decisions most effectively facilitate management of the masses. The debates that "sides" engage in are political theatre to keep up the pretense that any real debate is happening and the ruling class is making decisions based on the outcome of that debate.

Mr. Harrell, this is unrelated to the topic of the video, but I wanted to say thank you kindly for using the word ‘semantics’ in this presentation. I’ve been trying to remember the word semantics - it’s been on the tip of my tongue, you could say - for weeks now. Thanks a bunch!
I just had to comment this here and I hope you get to read it, Paul: I've been watching the channel for a while and I have to say, as someone who consumes a lot of content and see lots of people speaking on the same topics, you have one of the best, if not the best, ways to explain complex, convoluted and loaded topics. I always seen you as a great speaker and teacher, and I feel like I the majority of the audience agrees: you are an absolute treasure. Please keep on doing this great job and public service that is maintaining this channel. Cheers from Brazil.
I genuinely enjoyed this presentation. Too often I listen to a podcast or watch a video of someone and even though I agree with their premise, or conclusions or both, I leave feeling angry. Your matter-of-fact attitude and speech regarding the topic kept the emotional severity without trying to elicit an emotional response by dealing in boiled down, on topic facts. That is extremely refreshing and appreciated.
Thank you for this was a thoughtful and factual presentation. As a high school educator, I wish I could share this presentation with other educators. The problem is how to get passed the spin to which educators are indoctrinated.
When he asked “What didn’t exist back then, that exists now that may be causing mass shooting?” I immediately thought of the internet and social media. On top of that I thought of declining mental health.
"On top of that I thought of declining mental health." Gee, you think? I'm pretty sure that running around and randomly killing people isn't done by those of stable mind.
I'd consider the foundation of the modern mass shooting to be the columbine attack back in 1998ish. You guys might not remember, but social media was completely absent at that point. As for mental health degrading, I'd say anyone considering this act is definitely suffering from it. But I don't know how it's related, like correlation or causation.
Dear Mr. Harrell I just wanted you to know that all of your work is greatly appreciated. The amount of time and research you put into your videos is just amazing, and I think we all love how articulate you are in your videos but especially one’s like this. Always great videos, Paul I passed on this video 6 months ago (probably due to not having time to watch it when it was posted), but I'm glad I came back to watch it. I am from the UK, so inevitably my view on mass shootings in the US has been muddied by the mainstream media. If I were ever to move to the US I would seek out a person as level headed as you to teach me how to be preficient with firearms. Keep up the great work, Paul and Crew!
While mass shootings are at their highest, access to high capacity self loading firearms has never been more difficult. I wonder if its because young people have never been so socially isolated in history, and perhaps because while the previous generations behind them could buy a house in their twenties, swathes of young adults now struggle to make rent while living frugally, only floating inches above the poverty line.
its also bc the sexual revolution lead to instable marriages, and instable relationships over all a shift in human dating behaviour. and that is not good for many people. women also not bc now a large part of females tries to have a rather short relationship with an as high status man as possible and then the next etc, instead of settling for a man of roughly equal status. and staying with him in most cases
@@JuddKramer he may have a point. Think about this from the perspective of a kid living in an unstable home. Your one parent is never home and you spend all your time being raised by the internet.
And now a new video of Uvalde that just surfaced. Police armed with AR's and ballistic shields arrived 20 minutes after the shooter entered the school and stood in the hallway for 60 minutes. So, we had the platoon sized element sitting outside the school doing nothing and a squad element actually in the school doing nothing.
That pisses me off to no end. Every one of those cowards needs to be fired and barred from ever serving in LEO in any capacity. In Las Vegas shooting, a cop who was close (i believe a couple floors down in the hotel)during the active shooting froze in fear and didn't even attempt engagement. He was fired pretty quickly for cowardice. Engaging the shooter, at a minimum, draws his attention away from innocents. They aren't machines and firing at them even without chance of on target hits is going to dump more adrenaline and hopefully cause them to make a mistake and reveal themselves as a target or end their own life. Even containment of the shooter can save lives, but that takes engagement, not sitting around taking inventory of personnel and fucking equipment.
Another question is why don't the authorities act appropriately when they are tipped off that someone is up to no good? It happened with the Parkland shooter, the Florida night club shooter, the Uvaldi shooter outside the school, and also the Buffalo shooter.
the simple answer is because they are cowards and pension hogs. more concerned with their morning coffee and paychecks than protecting their communities.
Unwillingness to follow through competently. Police went to investigate Elliot Roger at his home a short while before he went on his spree. If they had conducted a search of any capacity they would have stopped him. If they can no-knock break into my home on suspicion I have drugs, they can do the same for these shooters, but they just don’t care to
Forms of nepotism, good ol boys clubs. When a gay friend of mine in a conservative town was threatened with his life the cops thought it was an empty threat. When an assault threat occurred against a worker at a company that works close with the police department the cops were all over it. Some problems get more attention based on community connections and private beliefs.
I watch the parts I've already seen in other videos, just to admire Mr Harrell's professionalism as he restates that which need never be restated so eloquently and clearly. What a machine.
When discussing matters like this, we tend to end up condensing this hour long amount of discussion and information into simple short phrases, "oh we have X problem only because of X" "X is crazy because of X" "we could fix X if we just X". I loved that point in this video - No matter which side of an argument talks in this way, that this kind of "discussion" only DELAYS action causing MORE deaths/and or issues. This discussion is so long because that's how long it SHOULD be, brevity creates ambiguity.
There's a very important rule in sociology that social problems never have one cause. Mass shootings aren't because solely of mental illness, not solely because guns are accessible, not solely because whatever. The obesity epidemic isn't solely because of poverty, not solely because of food education, not solely because of whatever. It's a really important rule because it really helps make the issue less partisan
Absolutely eye opening video. You did a FANTASTIC job talking through things in a professional and unbiased manner. Very well done, and thank you for your input on the recent tragedies we have seen.

@@vaylard9474 The thing is, a lot of people watching this video need these things explained to them. In may be tedious for people like us to get through, but we're not the target audience. stopping or at least mitigating bullying would go a long way. i was bullied only a little bit, for a short while and it still hurt me quite a lot, so i can only imagine what its like for those who get truly bullied. maybe worst of all were the teachers looking the other way when it happened. i can imagine how someone could go "i remember when you looked the other way and pretended like nothing when i was getting bullied, when it was your responsibility to stop it. well you wont be able to pretend like nothing this time."
I know this is a really old comment so I apologize. In my opinion, bullying will always exist. As unfortunate as it may seem, it’s almost impossible to stop especially among teenage boys. The problem, I believe lies in the fact that the bullying hurts these children more in this day and age. Children don’t have as strong of a community or sometimes much of a family so the opinions of their peers matter more to them.

We could raise the semi-auto rifle age to 21 while we get those great ideas on track.

Watchin videos like this as a european that lives in the north of germany is realy sad
We have little to none of those things
Imagin your little one gets shot in the face while at school
That is on purpose. Because many of "their shit" that they push through media wouldnt work if there would be a culture of calm, rational discussion.
The truth is what nobody wants to consider.
Now you see why the problem will never be solved.

I think it's a odd combination of expecting too much and too little from teenagers these days at the same time.
Social media plays a big role in turning our society antisocial. Studies have shown that children are more prone to antisocial behavior after being allowed to get on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit. Etc.

Paul I’ve been watching your videos for a couple years and I’ve never actually noticed your speech impediment during a video. The way you’re able to speak for over an hour and hold my 22 year old attention span is nothing short of legendary. Keep up the good work.
I worked with a cat with a severe stutter for 3 years and never noticed it until someone cracked a joke about it. Then of course I couldn't not notice it. I get pissed at the grammar and spelling Nazis that can't help but correct folks. If you understood it well enough to correct it, then, just why? We can read upside down and with letters interspersed backwards and the amazing human mind fills in the blanks. Sorts it all out. I've heard Paul mention it 20, 30 times, and I've never noticed it. I don't know, maybe we're just too interested in what he's actually saying? Because it has actual value?

Fully agree. The apsalute worst i could say is that he talks somewhat slowly but thats not even an issue, it just makes every word that much easier to understand and gives you time think along with him. I'm just glad not to have become a statistic and I think we need more voices like this speaking out on the politicization of death.

Bro, GET A GUN.
I've never noticed Paul had a speech impediment. I've always understood every word he said.
You should get a gun if you can in your area its worth it
There is something seriously wrong that of the three replies to this comment, two of them are telling a complete stranger to buy a gun (despite the fact that they did not ask your opinion or indicate any desire to own a gun).

Why do you think we have the globalists, that want to take over the hole world, and make much more rules on normal people… Take all of our belongings… Not only the guns.
first step is to stop voting for professional polititians
those who succeed in politics are those who can work within the two-party system, not those with good ideas.
All we have now is evil vs. lesser evil...
If politicians on both sides followed your recommendations I’m convinced we’d finally see a change, instead of just selfish argument. This is your finest work yet and you should be very proud.

It's difficult to make people do good when there's no incentive to be a good citizen and not much of a future to tell people to look towards.
its also bc the sexual revolution lead to instable marriages, and instable relationships over all a shift in human dating behaviour. and that is not good for many people. women also not bc now a large part of females tries to have a rather short relationship with an as high status man as possible and then the next etc, instead of settling for a man of roughly equal status. and staying with him in most cases
@@patriciusvunkempen102 See a therapist.

Cowards.
Because the authorities want mass shooting events to happen.
Maybe it's needed a better/different training for authorities about mass shootings
It’s something about the way he organized and presented this video. He simultaneously broke down all political aspects while educating people. Truly amazing and honorable
maybe i've just spent too much time on twitter, but i had to skip over a lot because it was just political ideology and discourse 101, couldn't wait for him to get to the point
@@vaylard9474 barely any of it was political discourse. He was speaking about issues that exist with discussing mass shootings for most of the video, and then gave a few possible solutions. I think you’ve been on twitter too much

exactly, that's the "political discouse 101" i'm talking about. these issues can be found in discussions pertaining to anything controversial, these things are not unique to mass shootings. i felt a bit infantilized by all those lengthy and repetitive explanations of simple things.
ofc, that's not to say that the video is bad, just waaaaay longer than it could have been.
@@vaylard9474 The thing is, a lot of people watching this video need these things explained to them. Far too many people think winning a debate entails being louder than the other person and arguing in bad faith. Hell, we even elected a president that uses those tactics in 2016.
In may be tedious for people like us to get through, but we're not the target audience. It's important for him to take this approach both because many conservatives need an authoritative figure to explain it to them and many liberals need to realize not everyone in the gun community is a low-iq gaslighting pos.
@@vaylard9474 If you don’t mind me asking, what message did you end up receiving from the video as a whole?
The large scale closure of Asylums began in the 1980s and was completed by 2015.
stopping or at least mitigating bullying would go a long way. i was bullied only a little bit, for a short while and it still hurt me quite a lot, so i can only imagine what its like for those who get truly bullied. maybe worst of all were the teachers looking the other way when it happened. i can imagine how someone could go "i remember when you looked the other way and pretended like nothing when i was getting bullied, when it was your responsibility to stop it. well you wont be able to pretend like nothing this time."
You seem like a very well-reasoned individual, and I respect you for speaking up about this. I truly wish more people in places of power would follow your example.
the problem is people in power are no way like Paul is. they could not hold a candle to him and he does not have a control issues
I watched this whole video and I can appreciate you pointing out the lies and hypocrisy with the political aspect of this debate. Thank you Paul. I can only hope and dream that people will be willing to educate themselves regarding any matter they want to involve themselves in and found it to be one of the most informative videos you’ve made in a while. There was clear thought and intention to make this as unbiased as possible.
hypocrisy such as: spending an hour and 23 minutes on a video outlining how it is not guns and that he has no real answers.. but those that delay or prevent actual conversation, have blood on their hands. But not him. Not with this hour and 23 minute video outlining how shootings have nothing to do with guns.
