Loved the video. Dominican here living in the US. Totally agree with your takes and how you always put up the fact DR is a very unequal place, because it is. Before I moved to the US, I wasn’t able to afford the lifestyle and fun I have now when I go back to DR. Santo Domingo is as expensive as many big US cities. I always stay in high end places and enjoy the AMAZING food which honestly is the best thing SD has to offer.
I hope the inequality issue and poverty improve over time. DR is not the best country in the world but is a great country with lots to offer. And it is a tropical paradise to those making good money who can afford the nice things, which happens to be most of us tourist but not the majority of average Dominicans.

The Dominican Republic is not poor is the country that produces most gold in Latin America number 5 in the world has so much . Punta Cana second most visited after MX in Latin America. DR is middle income country and is the richest country in the Caribbean and central America plus every yr gets richer. Santiago second city of DR 🇩🇴 they have Towers rich people. Puerto Plata, Francisco de Macoris ect..... Santo Domingo only has 14 McDonald's 5 starbucks ect... Santiago de los caballeros DR has 7 Mc Donald's ec Wendy ect... Santo Domingo has the second most advanced Metro in Latin America and 50 cable car and 50 trains. Santiago de los caballeros will have by 2025 train also 16 Bala train and 50 cable car like Santo Domingo. a lot of places in DR may look USA not only Punta Cana and Santo Domingo also the tower a city part of Santiago de los caballeros 🇩🇴 looks like USA and parts of DR

Not say by many people, but all is true. The only thing is that you dont need 15K, oh no! With 3K to 5K people can have a great life in SD. And if it is in Punta Cana even less.

While I agree with how beautiful. You can definitely live the part time Dominican Republic lifestyle. A whole lot cheaper and still have the luxuries. I never spend so much a month in DR on rentals. And there are so many other inexpensive places to eat and the food is amazing. Also you can definitely have a place there for cheap. I have a place in a upscale building. I don’t spend nearly the backpack price. And still live amazingly well

Even in Europe where I travel at lot, not every where is safe… almost got mud in Portugal last summer so…. However, I’m very proud of the positive progress. All I can hope is for our little nation to keep growing and improving education, medical care, water and safety. I have faith, that it all will change for the best. We have a difference in opinion my wife and I stayed at the Bahia Principe Grand Bavaro in Punta Cana and the food wasn't that good at all. It probably would've been better if we would've ate off the resort but you think the food would be good on an all inclusive resort and it was not. Other than that we had a great time and the weather was beautiful which was in Jan 2023.

Backpacking at $2000, $5000-$15000….? WTF. Perhaps in an alternate universe. Yes there are wealthy people there and wealthy people going there to hang out at their vacation villas, but that’s not reality for the messes. I live in SD for less than $2500 a month, that’s a family of three, and I am not back packing. Living in a high-rise building by UASD, eating well, cooking home. Going out often to do things. Better to watch other videos of the DR if you want to learn more about it that is also grounded in the realm of the average retiree. Someone mentioned that it was not about the DR, it was more about Piantini. lol.

Great video! I'm in my forties looking for location independence and avoidance of the Anglo-North American rat race.
However, I am shocked by the high cost of living in the DR. $5000 - 15, 000 USD per month to live well!!!! I spend $5000 CAD living well in Toronto 🇨🇦, which is considered a HCOL city. I thought DR was cheaper. The high cost will discourage a lot of expats & retirees. The Etravel Guy video says rent is $600-$800 & a decent home is $100-200K to purchase. I don't know what to believe but I understand that living like a rock star is expensive anywhere on the globe.

I would consider the level of poverty that you saw on your way to the city to be more akin to Fabelas or Barrios. Even there most people just get by but they have TVs, cell service, food, transportation etc. The problem is that for the poor in DR, housing is very expensive. Most are just waiting for the governent to build a project so they can be relocated or little by little brick by brick make improvements bc there's not enough private inveatment in low income housing. It is the same in any city in LATAM. I grew up ther im the 80s and ufff..trust me. It was not good..Poverty was rampant. Electricity was less than unreliable which made for a crappy water service too. Transoortation was solely concho based, the streets were dirty even in good neiborhoods. It was safer though. With growth crime has increased drastically ) again comparing it with the 80s and even early 90s ).
DR has come a long long way and in 20 years it will likely have mist of its issues well sorted 🙏🏻. God willing.
Love the videos and looking forward to watching more.

There's inequality in every country. The DR has around 10 million people. 5 million are the middle class and the rich. 5 million are the working class and the poor. This is not just a poor country at all. It's is not Miami but it's got almost everything miami offers, in a smaller island scale. The poor here are dancing and drinking and laughing most of the time, food is abundant, rivers and beaches and music and family and religion values. Happy poor people - "So is rich and who is poor I cannot say" Morrissey
The notion that oh there's so much poverty in DR, this a poor country, is wrong. The 5 million Dominicans that are middle class and rich live like kings in comparison with the same level of people in America now. We pay import taxes and double prices for everything and we are not cheap at all. We have the best of the best. And most importantly rich in culture. Thank you for sharing the other side of DR.

    • @dankerchum
      @dankerchum  Рік тому +2

Thanks for the comment! Depends on how frequently you are in the country, what the length of your stay is, and what ties you have to the country. In my case, I can’t use “visiting” because it would be misleading since I’ve spent more time in the DR than in any other country in the past 12 months, and I have more ties to the DR now than to the country I’m from (long-term apartment, banking, and spending the vast majority of the year in the country, and having a new social circle). Saying I’m “visiting” is misleading. If anything I’m not even living here “part-time”, I’m simply living here and “visiting the other countries”, but that isn’t quite accurate. But the point of using the part-time phrase is to stress the digital nomad trifecta approach which helps you spend a significant amount of time in three countries throughout the year. Thanks for watching!

When you say América refering to USA you're wrong cause América is not a country (USA) is a continent so dominican republic is not in África, Europe or Asia,is located in América continent.

Hey man, thanks for the comment. Keep in mind that the $15k/m income (I'm not suggesting that someone should spend all of it) that I listed there is the "easy upper-class living". The DR can be done on WAY less (that's why I provided several budget points: $2K/m is low-cost budget living and no luxury, $5K/m can be some luxury with proper budgeting, and $15K/m would bring you a worry-free upscale lifestyle that most high-income locals enjoy), but there's a big disconnect between the classes in the DR, so someone who's in a developing area might think that I'm providing ridiculous numbers. In reality, there are plenty of local, wealthy people in the DR and many places are reserved for people earning multiple 6-figures. In some of the comments, you can see that people are suggesting that I'm paying "tourist prices". I am not. I can tell you that they simply haven't been to these places because all of my local friends pay the same prices, and the prices can be much higher than in most American cities. But you can still live very comfortably as a single guy making 4, 5, 6k - it just wouldn't match the lifestyle of the local upper-class, but you'd still live much more comfortably than in the US. Anyone who thinks that a $100 or $200 for a dinner is ridiculous should go to Peperoni, Turo or another upscale restaurant and have a regular dinner for two and they will understand that there are plenty of upscale places in the DR, and the prices aren't $20 for a dinner as many people here suggest. Best of luck in your visit to the DR, make a plan and go for it. Just wanted to clarify why that budget section is the way it is - you do not *need* $15K/m. Foreigners are often under the impression that all of DR is poor because they go to areas that are still developing, but it's simply not true, there's a high concentration of capital, investments and wealth in many areas of the country. And if you go to Casa de Campo, you'll start seeing both the local upper-class, as well as the English, Italian and American upper-class.

Correction: the Dominican Republic is not a poor country, but the millions of illegal haitians in the country make it look that way in certain areas..

I didn't like your video..some good/some bad. Song near beginning was sooo annoying/ repetitive. Focusing on crime/food perspectives good....just hopped all around....just FYI
