- In this video, I share my story of why I left America for the Dominican Republic to become an expat. From the culture to the cost of living to the sense of community, there are many reasons why moving to the Dominican Republic was the best decision for me.
If you're considering becoming an expat, especially in the Dominican Republic, then this video is for you. I'll share my personal experiences and insights on living as an American expat in the Dominican Republic.

Born and raised in Chicago and left 10 years ago for good. Best decision of my life.
Where did you go?
I’m in Chicago and I’m not mad at that. I’m researching too.
Which country did you end up in?
Waking up
Hola from Queretaro.
I moved to Mexico from Atlanta as a Black women and I say the exact same thing about Mexico! I reminds me of USA in 80s. the good old days when the US was family oriented, not stuck on too much technology, people were more close. I love Mexico. Cheers to your move!
Facts, the 80s in America especially in the South where I'm from was good times. Enjoy Mexico🙏🏾

That too👍🏾
Jay, you hit the nail on the head with the reasons you stated. I feel the same way. It just doesn't make sense anymore. I was born in D.R. but was raised in NYC. I never imagined in a million years that I would consider living in the D.R. and now I am considering any and all options because USA ain't it. I'm tired of the grind and the division. My parents came to the US in the 70s for a better life and I guess for awhile, it was better but I feel like we are going backwards now. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome. I feel ya. Many people feel like you and me. Some don't want to accept the fact the US is spiraling out of control. If you have the opportunity to get out. Take the chance. I tell people if it doesn't work you can always go back.
@@nakho3550 Bruh, I don't give a damn about David Ortiz or how he feels or who else is fleeing the island. I do what I want to do. If it's working for me. That's what matters. If you think it's going backwards you don't have to move here. No one is asking you to move to DR. And if you believe it is you don't know what you are talking about.
I left NYC at 25 years old and showed up in the DR in 2005
What would be a 90 day experiment to strengthen my Spanish learning became a 3 yr stay and my own biz teaching ESL and then Spanish to expats.
Of course, I was one only few Black Americans at the time. Good to see its catching on!
Suerte manito
Thanks bro💪🏾
@JayAbroad claro que si! You ever need any DR language advice, you hit me up. I dove all the way in and came out fluent
Yessiiirr. I'm going to need to dive into it. My wife is Dominican and she speaks to me in English most. I need to have her start speaking to me in Spanish more often.
@@JayAbroad you gotta refuse to reply in English. Remember those folks in your own city that be like "I dont speak" english, conveniently when they dont need to deal with someone's bs. You have to do that LOL.
From now on "you no speak inglês"
This is 100% facts!!! Most Americans will NEVER understand this video. I don’t know you from Adam and I feel the same way! There are a few more issues that you didn’t even mention that would blow the average American’s mind.
I believe you homie more issues than we got time 😅
Preach. I second this. People, mainly Americans, and even some Europeans think this is the best place on earth. God is starting to open people's eyes to the wickedness.
Love this videos… I’m black Dominican living in New York City and I feel every day what is to be black in America,, as I said I’m Dominican but a dark skin Dominican, soo when white people sees me they see black, but when I open my mouth and they hear my Spanish accent they immediately said, ohh I thought you were black,,ohhh my god, that whole bull shi-- narrative drive my 😝 I go like ,what did you just said…can’t take the level of ignorance in USA,, it’s sooo 1800s…..
@@JayAbroad Jay, thank you for sharing your story. It's the "Wild, Wild, West" in Amerikkka. A BM has a "target" on his back, and need to walk on egg shells no matter where he goes. I've been all over the world and encouraged others to get a passport and travel.
You have to access the future because inflation is out of control, jobs going overseas, immigrants coming here getting jobs in Chi-town over BM. A lot are considering Panama, Africa, DR, etc. There is definitely a "narrative & agenda" being pushed. You have peace now. GOD bless you & the family.
I was born and raised in the US, and the level of ignorance is real. The average American doesn't understand other cultures and are ignorant to the world outside the US. And they definitely don't understand Latinos including our diversity, the melting pot of races and sub cultures that make us who we are.
Once the ice and the cognac hit the glass i knew this would be a good video😂. Great topic
Yessiiirr, you know it 💪🏾
q
Me too, lol!
Same 😅
😂😂
As a Dominican myself I’m working my butt off to go back to my country. When I came 7 years ago, I was always surrounded by family and friends and out of nowhere I was here by my own.
In this country I witnessed so many things I thought I would only see in movies, so much tension everywhere I go that would not let me live in peace, but when I visit my beautiful patio 🇩🇴it’s like a dream that I wished I’ll never wake up…
I've heard this before from a Dominican. That when you get to the US everyone is glad to see you then all of it wears off and everyone is back to their own lives. That's just US culture.
I’m right behind you! Hopefully by the end of 2024 I can relocate! 💯💪🏾 Great video!
Yessiiirr, bet that💪🏾
Bro you hit the nail on the head. One thing you forgot was the healthcare. Some many people have the slightest idea what life is outside America. I definitely appreciate the video.
Yep, Healthcare is outrageous. I agree.
What would you if your wife only wants to live close to her family (same city) and does not want to leave the US? Would you still leave without her?
@@standelasanantone2180
I believe that things always play out the way they should be. In DR we live close to her family now and she wants to get another place and not live some close. So we can have our privacy and see what I go through in the US and her other family from DR goes through and she just wants to visit.
"For better or for worse."@@standelasanantone2180
Bingo! Like you said... the America we grew up with in the 80's no longer exist.
The 1980's was the one of the best decades of America.
Minus the krack
When times change, either we change wit it or get left behind and frustrated.
No, we just move to another country and forget Amerikkka
Are you on crack? The 80s was the worst time of America because of the crack epidemic.
I have been living here in DR Since sept 2022 I lived in Nyc 21 years and 3 years in tennesse and I was done with US im so happy here back at my land and planning to get a piece a land in the mountains to just really chill. Great video much love, prosperity and life for you and your family.
That's awesome! I know you're glad to be home.
Im trying to move to DR. Did you find a empty lot in the mountains? Do you mean the house is axtually up the mountain?
Really enjoyed your video, Jay and so happy to see us black Americans moving out of the US! My reasons in the future to relocating to South Africa is ALL of the reasons you mentioned. I'm so happy for you my brotha!
Thank bro. I appreciate that. And congratulations on your upcoming move to South Africa. I love too seeing brother find their happy place.
Totally agree. I have been living abroad for 3 1/2 years for these same reasons. And even the main reason that the U.S. is a great place to make money has become a moot point, because the cost of living takes everything you are busting your behind to make. Peace is priceless. Yesssiiir, i try to tell some of my friends that you have to leave the country and you'll realize you've been hoodwinked. Life is much better outside the states.
Oh God everything you say in this video is soo real! That is why I’m packing and leaving. I love New York yes, but is crazy here you can’t make it anymore. I don’t know why I feel so relaxed as soon as I land in the DR. Love my country!
I'm the same way when I'm here, relaxed. Trust me I feel ya.
Thank you for your video. To leave the U.S. do you have to give up your citizenship and apply for citizenship in the DR and do you still have to pay taxes to the IRS? Thank you
@Revel214 no siir you don't have to give up your citizens ship to live here. If you still making money from the US yes you still pay taxes
@@JayAbroadthank you very much
You got a great channel Jay. I’m moving my family of
5 to Bosnia next year. As an immigrant in America I have experienced xenophobia and racism many times. I had to work twice as hard to compete with people “who just had the right name”. I have tested with by using a name Anthony Jennings on my resume and would get calls immediately. Best of luck and keep it up.
Damn, it doesn't surprise me. And people try to convince us it doesn't exist. I agree it can't stop you but as you said you have to jump through hoops just to be successful. Why deal that when you don't have to.
You got a small taste of what the BM has been experiencing all their lives. Having a certain "accent" or "cultural sounding name" will get your application tossed in "File 13" (trash) regardless of your degree & qualifications. Best of luck to you & the family in Bosnia.
Dang! Ive heard about this in europe. Im shocked the european last name crazy stuff is happening in usa.
Cons outweigh Pros with America 100%

Absolutely! Best advice I was given had to return the favor.
Jay, I totally agree I grew up in the 70’s and these are some of the exact same reason (and more) I decided to move to the DR, I’ve been visiting the country since 2015 and on my first visit 3 days in I decided right then and there this is were I was going to retire to! Another excellent vid my brother!
Yessiiir...Are you living here now? What city are you in?
2021 is where I picked back up my traveling journey’s after spending a month in Europe in 2017.
Living in Portugal, Spain and Brasil opened my eyes back up to the realization that the _New American Dream_ is to LEAVE.
I 100% agree. It's nothing like getting a taste of living in another country and realizing you've been duped this whole time in America..lol
How do I leave?
I totally agree with you. I respect everyone’s sexual identity but don’t push it in our faces so much and our kids as well. Well said.
Yep, that's all I'm saying. Do what you want but don't force it down my throat and please just leave the kids out of it...
Actually, this point is one of the worst in US right now.

In the Dominican Republic no matter how black you are If you got money you are the boss, the king, we don't care about skin color
Facts!
@@JayAbroad I am orlando , florida . Looking to move to Dominican Republic any advice as far as decent employment . Thanks
Bro, I don't recommend working over here because the salary is really low. But if that doesn't matter I would recommend a call center here in Santo Domingo. They usually pay somewhere around $700 to $1000 per month depending on the call center and the bonus structure. It's probably one of the highest paying unskilled job here. They are always looking for English speakers.
disturbing
@@alexispichardo6090salaries here are low, that’s mainly the reason why so many Dominicans migrate to wealthier countries like the US, moving to DR from the US mostly works for the retirees, cuz they get their paychecks in USD or unless you have some business venture that you think might be successful down here, otherwise, I don’t recommend moving over here.
So many wonderful places to explore in this world. Everyone should take the opportunity to live abroad ❤
I agree.
you provided some great information. I have been talking to my husband about moving from the US. I'm looking for a slower paste, better quality of life. Low crime rate, friendly. I love small town and rural areas. I live in a small town now, I'm in the DMV area, and everyone I come across has Cancer, I lost my mother and sister to cancer. I think its in our food. I have been doing a lot of research on other countries and their quality of food is healthier. Thanks for the info.

The DR has a lot of pricessed foods. I just came back yesterday from ounta cana and i was in higuey and santo domingo. Processed food everywhere. However if youre in the country or one of the bigger grocery stores its the exact opposite. Super freah food everywhere.

I understand the feeling. Make it happen. Congratulations 🎊
The hatred of the USA is unmatched. Like you said Dr can be racist in certain places but never at the level of the USA. Dominicans can't fathom that level of hatred at all.
I try to tell people this all the time. You can't compare DR to the US when it comes to that...
Us racism is like psychological warfare and constant oppression
No matter how black you are if you have money, you are the boss .
Jay you're so on point about America. It's crazy here in the US. I working on a way to come live in DR.
I don't blame you bro. Glad you're working to get out💪🏾
Welcome to the DR my friend, I hope you're doing great here in our imperfect but wonderful country.
Yes I am. Thank you💪🏾
What you are saying is so true, i lived in D.R and South Africa and hands down, the D.R wins and i will be moving back to the D.R in May and i can not wait
That's interesting to know you think DR beats South Africa in your opinion. Very interesting.
I’m Colombian, living in the US since 6 years ago. One of the main reasons why I plan to raise my kids outside of the US is the racism. I want their foundational years to be healthy emotionally and socially.
I understand that. One of the reasons I wanted to move from the US. Didn't want my daughter dealing with that. Here every little girl looks like her.
You are 100 percent correct about the classism part of DR, as a country we are not racist. We don’t call blacks, Afro dominicans, they are just dominicans. Is all about money and status, even if you come from Haiti, and people see you are a professional or business man/woman, they will treat you with respect
I agree. 💪🏾
I disagree with you. I work with many Dominicans in a huge organization. They are racist. They only take care of each other and they deal with blacks only if they have to. Other than that it’s all about them. They are extremely blatant about it. All races at my job complain about them. It’s bad. They are like the Jewish people. They stick together and only hook up each other. Don’t sleep. They are also called nationalists
🤔
That seems like a very unhealthy culture/society. I thought one of the worst things about the US was exactly the fact that everyone is chasing money and status.
Soon as I get my Spanish conversational I'm going to visit...I've never felt like I belonged in America though born here. I long for a place where I'm no longer prejudged/prejudice based on my melanin. This place was never awesome but now? It's a cesspool. I have two children who are with my ex till they're older. I need to establish myself in another country so that they can escape this sinking ship...thanks for your experiences, much appreciated
Yessiiirr brother I feel ya pain. DR for me is that place where I'm not prejudged because the color of my skin. They look at me as a human being. It's a huge weight off my shoulder. Some people have different experiences but this is mine. There are many places that you can go where this is the case. I have a grade school daughter and there was no way I was going to send her to a public school in the US. I'm sure you'll figure it out. Any countries in particular you have on your list?
@@JayAbroad hmmm...DR, I have a friend with properties in Belize I want to visit, Philippines, and I want to see Rwanda...seems like great progress is happening there
...but first I'm visiting a Spanish speaking country.
All seem like great places. Either one would be a better choice than the US.
Over 40 years ago, i told BP to learn conversational Spanish, get a Latin friend to practice with, or I'll teach them. (Cussed me out, told me they wasn't learning s**t!) Now, can't get hired unless they speak Spanish, & now "hot as fish grease!" I will be traveling to CO, DR, Panama, etc. and considering moving as well. My advice: GO! Don't let anyone stop you. You deserve safety, happiness, and to live & walk the streets without fear of your life. Good luck! ✈🌍🏝🥭🥥

You mentioned about not being comfortable in public and people on edge in the states..i agree. Im always looking over my shoulder and prefer to be home, honestly. I was in Santo Domingo one Sunday night last year walking around on the Malecon near the amusement park area and tons of people out until the wee hours, young and elderly just having a good time with no fighting, shooting etc. Try that in the US. Racism, i agree. In the DR i feel at home and relaxed when there versus the states where i never did. Material wise, we have so much wealth in the states yet miserable and while many Dominicans don't have a lot of things, they are happy and prioritize family and friendships. And yes I know that the DR has its flaws for sure. Please forgive the long post but had to respond and excellent video 👏🏾 keep enjoying.
I tell Norberis this all the time when we pass by or hang out on the malecon. You see people of all ages and families and nothing goes down. That would not happen in many parts of the US.

Thank you so much for making this video. These are the daily struggles that I face every day in America. That’s why I’m considered leaving too.
You are so welcome! It's time to start looking for countries to fit your needs.
Hi Jay. That was on point. I’m a firstborn generation American. My mom is Dominican and my dad Puerto Rican. I’ve been watching Norberis’s videos, among others, to get a pulse of sentiment from expats. I’ve been going to the DR(Santiago) since I was 2, since we have family in that city. I retired from the Marine Corps in 2016, full pension. The wife retires in 2034, so we’re waiting on her pension. Also waiting for our son to graduate from college,we don’t want to take any kids. My wife is gringa, German-American . We’ve been debating becoming expats for ALL the reasons you stated(DR, Argentina or Colombia). Your video was straight to the point. If we move to the DR, it’ll be north coast, we’ll start looking in 2030. I was in PP and Santiago in March 2023. We’ll be in PP in May on a cruise stop, and I plan to give the wife a great tour for about 7 hours. However,we’ll have to make multiple trips lasting weeks after 2030,I’m sure things will be a little different with the new train systems in place. Jay,have a great life in the DR and thanks again. The US is unbearable.
Thanks homie, I appreciate you sharing this. I know everything will work out for you in choosing the right place for you and your wife.
The most important thing in the life of a human being is to have Jesus Christ in your heart, serve God with all your heart and no matter where you are, if you have God with you, you will be fine, may God bless you.
People have faith in Christ and live in war torn countries for them it matters where you live. People have economic struggles or corrupt government that they seek refuge. While Christ in your life is important it does matter for some people in different walks of life where they physically live
Spot on, bro.
I'm a Dominican living in New York City for 30 + years, and I've never seen this country so divided by hatred. New York is a big mess now: crime, dirty, unbelievably expensive, dysfunctional and out of whack.
I'm done. Sadly, I need to work a couple of more years to have a decent retirement income. I just pray that I'll be able to make it through the other end of the tunnel.
Another country to consider is Colombia (I heard good reports about it), and it's way cheaper than the Dominican Republic.
Thank you, bro. Wish you the very best to you and your family.
Thanks bro I appreciate it. If you think Colombia is a good fit for you check it out. I'm comfortable right here with the people of Dominican Republic. It's has a little more to do than just saving money for me. Here I'm among people who look like me and that's important.
I love this video and the jewels that have ben dropped are awesome
Thank you🙏🏾

GOOD FOR YOU! So happy you have found your place!

What a negative wake-up call coming "home". OMG, bc of all of your reasons, I have been trying to leave the US for over a year. All I have in this life are my rescue cats - I will not abandon them like everyone has me.
Mexico is setting their sights on rich foreigners, and sentiments are rising there against expats, as well.
With Putin's war reeking havoc on the Europeans $$$, it isn't a great time to move back there. I haven't seen my grandkids since before the pandemic. Can't afford to fly the cats overseas either. 😢 Praying for a better day 🙏
Enjoy your best life! I enjoyed your video.
Yes ma'am better days will come. Thank you. I pray you're able to move out soon.
This video is so good . Thank you for sharing .
You are so welcome
My brother!! keep kicking them facts man!! you 100% on point here! I just saw Norberis video the other day, teaching how to make mamajuana.... one of my favorites, including that Leyenda! I'm hoping to get back over there sometime next year on vacation... Hope to get to meet you guys! you'll do nice work bro!!
Words of wisdom !! Respect wishing you the best still love your wing channel. Be free enjoy life !!
I appreciate that, homie. Thanks!
Everything you stated here is why we're moving back to the island this summer.
By the way, black Americans have been migrating to DR since the early 1800s. Look at the history of Samana. There are lots of African American dependents there, and it's quite interesting.
Good luck! Hopefully, I'll see you there someday soon!
Yessiir, i feel ya bro. Get out of the mess over there if you can. When you do we have to have a cold presidente together!
Great presentation I agree with you.
Thanks i appreciate that.
Man your video has so much wisdom . Wish others see this point of view because you are correct and fair in your assessment
Thanks fam, I appreciate it.
It is true what your saying,I went to Africa in february and that's when I felt that I was black for sure, i'm from the uk and there is no opportunity here for black people and get treated like rubbish. America is good for making money but that's all it is.
Bingo!💪
Great video!! Thanks for sharing. Stay Blessed
Thank homie! You too!
Great video! I retired from the military and returned home to Jamaica in 2021. I agree with you on every point you made. I agree that the feeling of blending in with everyone and not being judged based on skin color is hard to explain but it feels so good!
Thanks fam. If only people can experience that one part would be a game changer in their lives.
Thank you for sharing. I feel exactly the same way and my plan is in motion to get there!
You are so welcome! We waiting on you here🤗🙏🏾
Gracias, señor. Y you hit the perfect points of why I want to move and stay in DR. And not only, majority of women in America wanna be men nowadays that I don’t see why they need me for. So, I got to relocate
Lol, i feel ya homie. You're welcome.
Well said 👍

Yep, it's spiraling out of control.
Thanks for sharing, my friend. I agree with you 💯

I'm thinking Belize. Nice video brudda and congrats to you and your family>
