As surprising as this sounds, im actually enjoying this series ALOT. Alot more than most things i've seen NL do. And i've been around since isaac episode 50 ish!
NL's improved a lot, and it made me glad when he remembered the advice to hit shields first with the beams. The only thing I can say right now is to start paying attention to the dialog and what's happening. That event with the slug on the moon seemed to be made for people like NL; if he had read the dialog, he would have seen that there were six (6) moons and he could have gotten another crew member + not have all his supplies stolen. Other than that, he's been improving :)
In the Slug Home Nebula, always let them live, they can offer you information, which add a quest marker on your map. If you defeat the ship on this marker, you unlock the Slug cruiser (and if you already have it you get good rewards).
Yay! He remembered the tip to start using the beam on shields whenever possible. An important tip for beam weapons that can go through shields, a bit less important with the mini-beam or pike beam. Although right after he made that epiphany he started by attacking a completely different part of the very next ship, lol. 24:20 This event is here because people skip dialogue without reading it. LOL Always bites you in the ass, so I at least try to scan through as much text as I can. Also Burst Laser II is probably my favorite weapon in the entire game. 3 Shots for 2 power is just too good to pass up. Sure Vulcan is fun, swarm missiles are great, and Burst Laser II has 5 shots, but in the long run the Burst Laser II is just the most efficient use of energy.
NL, If you use a beam that can get through shields, aim for the shield system first, it will disable thier shields and let you do more damage with your beam, hope this helps
To unlock the Mantis B, I'd probably recommend getting the "Battle Royale" achievement off-camera. You can get it pretty easily if you: - teleport onto an enemy ship in Sector 1 - slaughter the enemy crew until there's just a single, weakened member remaining - teleport your own crew back and kill off all of them save for one via asphyxiation - send that one onto the enemy ship to finish the job It would be almost impossible to actually finish a run after doing all that, but it'll get you a new ship - a ship which some consider to be one of the best in the entire game.
Something to note for next time, NL: The slug home nebula can give you the slug cruiser quest. But to get it, you have to accept when slugs offer what's in their stores in exchange for their lives. Sometimes you get junk, sometimes you get a shot at the slug cruiser. You need a slug or level 2 sensors for the quest, though. On a related note; it's always worth trying to grab cruiser unlock quests if you can, so I'd recommend taking every homeworld you come across. Even when you have a cruiser already unlocked, the rewards for the quests are pretty damn impressive anyway.
Hey NL, really enjoying your FTL playthroughs, keep up the good work. Thought you might like to know as you prefer to vent to clear borders - by turning off your O2 unit you can de-oxygenate rooms far quicker!
"Instead of fighting the enemies in the medbay, thus ensuring two free kills and no hull damage, i am going to take unnecessary hull damage by letting them destroy systems and trying to funnel them with the worst door play the world has ever seen." God dammit Ryan, we're only five minutes in!
All mighty lord of scummery. May i humbly inform you about the slug ships you encountered in the nebular. That design has no doors to either engine room and o2 room. So you can just soot up their o2 and engines and wait for those filthy slugs to die.
Cringed when he sold the hull repair drone. That thing would've saved my life so many times in the final sector. I can't tell you how many times I've lost because I beat one of the flagship stages and wasn't able to repair before the next stage. To me, that thing is _always_ worth keeping.
When you're using any beam (usually) it's best to hit shields first so the rest of the beam deals more damage because it doesn't have to go through any shields. I love your FTL stuff!
Thank god NL is realising that the shields are top priority when when using the Glave beam ( and Halberd beam i guess) . Btw homeworlds have more intresting quest that have greater rewards, for example the Zoltam Hw you can the zoltan shields, in the rock homeworlds you can get the rock plating ( I think) and so on.
NL, third-level sensors is far more important than second-level doors with the stealth cruiser, especially the B layout. It allows you to correctly time your cloaks.
When you use the Glaive beam (or any beam that does more than 1 damage) target the shields as the first system your beam will hit. the shields will then be off for the rest of the beam, and making it more effective
Decides not to use Stealth Cruiser C because of no shields. Instead goes with Stealth Cruiser B, which also does not have shields. The Northernlion Story!
Just a tip NL: don't use Zoltan to power weapons unless you have no other option. Put them somewhere non-essential that will still benefit from their power such as the Engine Room. You still gain the benefit of their ability, but you won't ever accidentally unpower your weapons when you move them.
When you're using the glaive beam on shielded ships, hit the shield room before the later rooms. The shield will go down resulting in greater damage on the rest of the rooms and better damage overall.
when a slug tries to give you what's in it's stores, ACCEPT! sometimes they will offer info or an anti-bio beam. taking the info leads to the slug quest to unlock the slug cruiser
The upside to accepting those Slug surrenders is there's a one in four chance they'll give you the Slug Cruiser unlock quest. Otherwise you're right in thinking they're awful.
If the enemy only has missiles divert power from the shields Hack a med-bay to kill the crew inside Mini beam can hit up to 4 squares in a /\/ pattern Hit the shields mid glaive to weaken them for the rest of the hit Ions that use 1 or 2 power are almost useless by themselves. With 3 power or multiple you can perma-ion a system Get lvl 2 med-bay for events, consider it cheap crew member insurance. Don't bother with shields against missile only ships. Attack cockpit over engines as cockpit has a max of 3 as compared to 8 You can hit about 2 nebulas instead of 1 regular, that's twice the loot. You can also have areas where the fireballs target the enemy. Stealth dodges the fireballs Mind control lvl 2 and 3 heals the victim Mind control a mind controlled crew member to cancel it out.
NL that event with the slug offering whats in their stores has several possible outcomes one lets you either get a weapon or you know get the quest for the slug cruiser ship
You can get the last achievement for the mantis cruiser fairly easily. Just play until you hit a ship you can board, kill all of their crew besides 1 guy, damage that guy, heal your guy, send all but your guy out the airlock and teleport your guy to kill their last guy. The run is screwed, but you got the achievement :D
Hey NL, next time you are in the slug home worlds, let all the slug ships live if they surrender. It has a random chance of triggering the slug ship unlock quest.
Sometimes NL. Just use the Glaive on as many systems as possible. You can either take out a system or two and have the chance for a ship to still get a shot or 2 off on you. Or you can cut through as many rooms as possible and 1 shot the ship.
Hey Northernloin when using powerful laser weapons (ones that do more than one damage per room) you should try to hit the shield room first so that the shields go down and you do more damage to the other rooms.
22:22 "for all the people who have tried to tell me to start on shields if I'm gonna use the Glaive Beam...you were right." ...then doesn't start on shields, for a shot that would have killed a fleeing ship: 2+2+2+2, instead of 2+3+3+3.
a little something ( might want to do it off cam) to get the 3 achive from the Mantis just kill off two of your crew (1 mantis and the engie). On the first fight with a ship that isnt a drone bord it with the 2 mantis kill off all but the last of the enemy crew, tp back to your ship the most hurt mantis, kill it and when its dead kill the last enemy crew with your last mantis and Mantis B is unlocked.
i know this video is 2 years old but i really enjoying it and watching it for tips i have unlocked red tail which i always call red fox and the engi b layout one cant remember the name but i still even though i play on easy struggling to beat it maybe i doing something wrong but that why i watching this though it is fun but would like to see him use red tail
watching this on 2x speed actually helps me to be okay with his mistakes. I tell myself he's playing on 2x speed and then all of his mistakes are understood. Not to say he shouldn't be pausing far more often. He needs to take more time with planning jumps.
NL, I think you may have used stealth cruiser layout B off camera or something, otherwise you wouldn't have had layout C. But I look forward to watching your playthrough, especially since watching your layout A win (which ended up with a glaive beam as well). Haven't watched the rest of this episode (or part 2) but I wish you a victory!
Also, Ryab, glad to see you learned (the hard way, I did too) to never trust Slugs in letting them live. The large majority of the time, they do in fact give you 69 middle fingers from their cargo bays.
Kouratidis Theofanis The requirement to unlock layout C is getting to sector 8 with the layout B ship, so he had to have used layout B already in getting to sector 8. Completing 2 achievements is what unlocks layout B.
DIsagree, Stealth cruiser B starts with one of the most powerful weapon in the game and good evasion. While Stealth C starts with no evasion and decent weapons.
Alex Mazur Stealth B comes with a weapon that takes more time to charge than the cloaking and gets buttfucked by drone, Stealth C gets drone protection and fast weapons.
GDKsan With correct management and level 3 cloak drones will do from little to no damage to you. While C type gets drone protection but lacks protection from normal weapons since all power goes to Anti-Drone unit. Ofc if we're talking about first sectors.
Alex Mazur I performed better with stealth C in general (out of 3 game 2 were to the flagship with one ot them winning) while I barely get through sector 4 with stealth B. Also my winning game with stealth C was my second best scoring game too (first one being slug A) and the best thing is it's the only ship whit which I beat the flagship without cloaking (yeah I didn't even do it with federation pre AE).
Well...your math skills are horrendous but I love your vids anyways and have loved them since your 40th Isaac video (which seems to be a viable measurement of loving someone^^)
at 24:14 you should have read the text. the slug that took your stuff punished you for not reading the text where it stood how many moons there where. I don't blame you though for not reading the text. I never read the text.
1. don't use the repair arm it's awful (15% of what you earn for 1 hull point which costs like 3-5 scrap to get at a shop...) 2. accept slug surrenders in the homeworld you dongle, that's the possible start of the slug cruiser unlocking quest
24:15 aaaaah damn NL, I made the same mistake on my most recent run there, just skimming through the text. If you had read the window before the one you read out loud you would've known the answer :P I'm convinced that event is just a dick punch from the developers toward people who either skim or completely ignore text
24:14 - 24:34 - Slugs just *HATE* when you skip over their dialogue.
Dude, you have improved a lot since Episode 1. Keep up the amazing work! Always love watching your FTL playthroughs.
As surprising as this sounds, im actually enjoying this series ALOT. Alot more than most things i've seen NL do. And i've been around since isaac episode 50 ish!
Why is that surprising? Who doesn't love their friendly(ish) neighbourhood chrome dome gamer? :D
NL's improved a lot, and it made me glad when he remembered the advice to hit shields first with the beams. I'm glad you said all these things. I wanted to, but I'm really tired and lazy right now. NL Listen more to Trent!
+Trent8086
Burst 2 has 3 shots not 5, Burst 3 has 5 shots for 3 or 4 power, not sure. XD
NL, If you use a beam that can get through shields, aim for the shield system first, it will disable thier shields and let you do more damage with your beam, hope this helps
We've been telling him for the past 10 videos about that. He just never reads the damn comments.
***** That's the NL we know and love.
***** I'm sure he won't forget or anything....................
To unlock the Mantis B, I'd probably recommend getting the "Battle Royale" achievement off-camera. You can get it pretty easily if you:
- teleport onto an enemy ship in Sector 1
- slaughter the enemy crew until there's just a single, weakened member remaining
- teleport your own crew back and kill off all of them save for one via asphyxiation

It would be almost impossible to actually finish a run after doing all that, but it'll get you a new ship - a ship which some consider to be one of the best in the entire game.
tad niewiadomski but the crystal ship is a bitch to get

Loving this series. As always, I appreciate your dedication, man.
Hey NL, really enjoying your FTL playthroughs, keep up the good work.

I can't wait till he tried the Mantis B lay out... I wonder if he will notice that it doesn't start with any weapons...
All mighty lord of scummery. May i humbly inform you about the slug ships you encountered in the nebular. That design has no doors to either engine room and o2 room. So you can just soot up their o2 and engines and wait for those filthy slugs to die.
You want to get the Mantis Cruiser achievement 'Battle Royale' on an 'off camera run'. Just make a run just to get it.
Cringed when he sold the hull repair drone. That thing would've saved my life so many times in the final sector. I can't tell you how many times I've lost because I beat one of the flagship stages and wasn't able to repair before the next stage. To me, that thing is _always_ worth keeping.
You can answer the slug's question by reading the description of the area you land in. Don't skip over them so quickly.
When you're using any beam (usually) it's best to hit shields first so the rest of the beam deals more damage because it doesn't have to go through any shields. I love your FTL stuff!
I see a lot of comments pointing out that he needs to start the beam on shields. He realizes this halfway through the video...
There is an edit button now. People should use it more. I certainty make liberal use of it.

Thanks, I already know he hasn't improved at all.
I think he meant cloaking, but saying the wrong things is par for the course in any decent Northernlion video!
NL, if you hit the shields first with a beam, you can knock out the shields with the beam and deal even more damage in one glaive beam.
Just a tip NL: don't use Zoltan to power weapons unless you have no other option. Put them somewhere non-essential that will still benefit from their power such as the Engine Room. You still gain the benefit of their ability, but you won't ever accidentally unpower your weapons when you move them.
Once slugs asks you stars: remember to give them number of your crew! "stars" are referred to them ability to see crew without sensors
+eraggo wow, i never noticed that...i just assumed it was random(or 6 every time)
NL, when using the glaive beam start on shields and go to weapons that way shields get damaged first and the following rooms take more damage.
SPOILER
Haha NL taking the deal at 27:35 is how to begin the Slug Cruiser unlock quest that he always says he wants to get...
I love how when you're the Stealth Cruiser, one bar of shield makes you feel invincible. lol
The upside to accepting those Slug surrenders is there's a one in four chance they'll give you the Slug Cruiser unlock quest. Otherwise you're right in thinking they're awful.
If the enemy only has missiles divert power from the shields

22:02 THE EPIPHANY HAS ARRIVED!!!!!(now lets see how many fights he does it for)
Hey NL, just so you know, unlocking a C ship requires you play the B ship UP TO sector 8 (making the jump to sector 8) just a tidbit :D
how come this vid and the ones after it aren't in the ftl play list?
Simo-H is a reference to Simo Häyhä a finnish sniper, who is said to be the best sniper...
Hey NL, next time you are in the slug home worlds, let all the slug ships live if they surrender. It has a random chance of triggering the slug ship unlock quest.

This series made me buy FTL and oh my GOD where did the last 16 hours go
FINALLY! 22:05 I am so proud of you NL.
I like how when i have full screen i can see the individual health digits but when its minimized its just like a bar of color.
Hey Northernloin when using powerful laser weapons (ones that do more than one damage per room) you should try to hit the shield room first so that the shields go down and you do more damage to the other rooms.
I fking LOVE your FTL series ...

wooo, more FTL! Insta-like :)
i know this video is 2 years old but i really enjoying it and watching it for tips i have unlocked red tail which i always call red fox and the engi b layout one cant remember the name but i still even though i play on easy struggling to beat it maybe i doing something wrong but that why i watching this though it is fun but would like to see him use red tail

Holy shit NL remembered finally
Let's see how this goes! Northernlion is really learning fast by my estimation.
does multiple engis in the wepons room give multiple bars of energy for wepons
Just in case you didn't know you can click and drag to select a group of people ;)
i have no shields and i must scream
NL, I think you may have used stealth cruiser layout B off camera or something, otherwise you wouldn't have had layout C. But I look forward to watching your playthrough, especially since watching your layout A win (which ended up with a glaive beam as well). No. he just did 2 achv in the previous episode.
Also, Ryab, glad to see you learned (the hard way, I did too) to never trust Slugs in letting them live. The large majority of the time, they do in fact give you 69 middle fingers from their cargo bays.

Its pretty funny seeing the comments that obviously were written before they finished watching the whole video
My Dark Souls II PC preload is at 69% right now!
Cant believe how funny nl can be laughed so hard I was crying
Start your beam on the shields so the rest of the rooms you hit will have one less level of shields
I just got FTL and I swear the first thing I see in my first shop is weapon pre-igniter
Stealth C is so much bbetter than stealth B
DIsagree, Stealth cruiser B starts with one of the most powerful weapon in the game and good evasion. While Stealth C starts with no evasion and decent weapons.

No offense intended strange pixelated monster, but saying stealth C is better than B is like saying horse shit is preferable to bull shit. Sorry.
Save for shields in the FIRST sector!
Well...your math skills are horrendous but I love your vids anyways and have loved them since your 40th Isaac video (which seems to be a viable measurement of loving someone^^)
I wanna see NL play with Rock B. I would really like to see him actually fight boarders rather than just asphyxiate them.
Finally now i can settle down 4 the night! Cheers NL
can any one tell me how to get the zoltan ship?
you should let the slugs surrender because it gives you a chance at the quest for the slug ship
Why is everyone calling NL a scumbag? He's trying his best.
22:00 Finally it clicks!
Why don't you heal to full at stores?!?!?!
at 24:14 you should have read the text. the slug that took your stuff punished you for not reading the text where it stood how many moons there where. I don't blame you though for not reading the text. I never read the text.
Can you please play on the Mantis Cruiser next run?
NL,if you would just read the text at 24:17 You would anwer the question at 24:29 correct.
A WHOLE NEW WORLD
Finally downloaded FTL,and as much as I scream to myself whilst watching this..... I am utter fucking garbage lol
7:05 No dammit, you could have reached the store and exit beacon in time.
1. don't use the repair arm it's awful (15% of what you earn for 1 hull point which costs like 3-5 scrap to get at a shop...)
2. accept slug surrenders in the homeworld you dongle, that's the possible start of the slug cruiser unlocking quest
It's not 1 hull point :L
Nl try naming leaving your ship name blank, it renames the ship to an easter egg!
If the lanius can survive without oxygen and then dont get destroyed with their ship does that mean there are lanius just floating in space?
let the slugs live... eventually you can pick up the slug-cruiser quest.
you should start beaming from shield, so it would go out 1st
"Oh hey you want what's in our stores in exchange for our lives?? I got 69middle fingers here" :'D
Fight the intruders fight the intruders Fight the intruders fight the intruders Fight the intruders fight the intruders
why does youtube look so pixelated now?
Keep it going!!!
FINALLY THE BEAM REALIZATION
24:15 aaaaah damn NL, I made the same mistake on my most recent run there, just skimming through the text. If you had read the window before the one you read out loud you would've known the answer :P
I'm convinced that event is just a dick punch from the developers toward people who either skim or completely ignore text
Fight the Intruders >:(
If ur an only child u may be oldest and youngest, but ur not the middle as ur not in the middle of two or more other people
Ahh, old NL
23:00 OMG just do the same thing on the OTHER side -.-
Holy shit what a nerdy game.
Фига он начал хилить экипаж, но все также не стреляет по щитам... он что через строчку читает? О-о
that was 25 scrap twice
inb4 lion throws
please just fight boarders already, you let them run rampant through your ship and they do hull damage when they destroy systems.
