and going into the boss fight with only 60% health (although he could get repairs) and not attacking the mind-control, which removed the pilot, thus reducing his evade.
Sandalf98 The fire started in the room beside the doors not in the same room so it spread to the door room after he let it burn, he even said something about not venting it.
Hey NL, you should over-upgrade your systems with that extra useless scrap at the end of the game. For example, even if you power shields only to Level 3 but have Level 4 available, an intruder will have to destroy two empty bars before disabling one of your shield bars.
Good episode Ryan, getting the hang of boarding, that's very important, cool stuff man. About episode: @10:15- Just wanted to again mention that you can select multiple crew by dragging the mouse to draw a square around them, then you can move them in groups to medbay/teleporter/etc. It's convenient. @15:54- Clone bay resurrects crew but at the cost of some experience, it may not be ideal for boarding vs Medbay but it's less micro-management perhaps. I prefer medbay personally. @47:29- I think it might be a good idea to use that 200 spare scrap to pad your critical systems, maybe add a little to weapon, shield and pilot so they can absorb more hits etc. No use saving it up for the afterlife lol.
NL! with level one teleports, only rockmen can survive in an de-oxygenated room before being teleported back. with level two all except zoltan can, and level three, every race can survive. so when boarding the drones ships, the level two teleporter can teleport back the mantis in time before they die.
I just need to start by saying Loving the series I don't comment that much but I've been around the NL bush for a long time. Just the amount of effort you put into a 50 minute video must be exhausting and I thank you for the entertainment while I too play some FTL and get gentle F'd.
Don't kill the guy on the laser turret. If you don't kill hm the AI can't turn on meaning that the ship will never repair after you kill the rest of the crew. The laser also can't kill you as long as you have three bars of sheilding.
Info on the cloning bay. You do not need power in it for the heal when you jump. The power only increases the speed at which the actually crew cloning happens. Keep it powered off until you need it.
Remember NL when there is a breach in a room but your oxygen is online and working you can open the doors on your ship to force the oxygen to spread to every room more often. Closing doors works both ways, it inhibits the flow of oxygen from one room to another as well as prevents the vacuum from spreading from one room to another. in this way you can get enough oxygen in a breached room with doors open so that crew can repair it safely without taking continual damage from the lack of oxygen. Also stop ignoring fires because they are in empty rooms. Fire spreads and damages the hull when it fills a room. Its not something you can just ignore.
Okay 1. You can hack through defence drone 1,just takes a few tries 2. You can click and drag to select multiple crew 3. The clone bay doesn't need to be powered up to heal them. The power lets them respawn faster.
For the mantis ship, I find it's faster to click-and-drag area select the teleporting crew rather than individually clicking on them. Plus sometimes doors get in the way when single-clicking. I'm unlocking a lot of ships, and the Mantis family of ships are my favorite so far. I'm glad you got so far on your first Mantis run.
If you're interested in saving reactor power, you generally don't have to power up your clone bay that much. The HP per jump happens regardless whether or not your clone bay is powered - powering up the clone bay just decreases the cloning time. Also, don't waste fuel on jumping to regain HP. Just put them in a room with no oxygen, kill them off, and they'll return with full health. The drop in skill isn't enough to make this not useful.
NL if you have a clone bay you should really just let your invading crew die all the time because the skill loss is so minor that they get it back in like three punches and even if it was major I would say that having respawning invading crew members is more useful than having skilled invading crew members. But the clone bay isn't for everyone, but incase you get it again don't D6 it and think it is too good to ever use thus making it bad.
NL, remember: You can and should teleport unto the drones either for training or for quick stealth/shield/weapons damage! You teleporter should be strong enough for to not get your mantis crew killed. :) Even 2nd level teleported is fast enough.
Northernlion: I know this wasn't the main reason you lost, but when it comes to the flagship, it is best to leave the guy in the laser room alive. If you kill everybody, of course the auto-heal can allow the missles to come back, which is a really, REALLY bad thing, and if you kill everybody in the main compartment, they no longer can heal anything. You could either break through the shields with your weapons, or you can even take down all the shields with your boarders.
When you got a clonebay you never have to worry about your crew dying as long as the clonebay is online, this also let's you take dangerous event options like fighting giant alien spiders without having to worry. It's actually really good, you will see when you play a ship that starts with one.
I've only played 3 runs of ftl so far but there's still so many things that just make me, wince I guess, when I watch NL play this. A lot of "how does he not know X after so many hours?!?" Commentary keeps me coming back though!
My first win with the Layout C Federation Cruiser(Not Artillery Beam, but the Flak Artillery, 7 projectiles), was a full boarding party win, lvl 3 clone bay, lvl 3 teleporter, maxed Flak Artillery. It only has a 2 space teleporter but I would teleport my crews(I had 3 boarding crews, 2 Mantis x2, 1 Rockman + 1 Human) and kept my other Human at the Helm. Board, destroy all weapons, teleport out, then just swarm the shield room. Lost my crew several times(but got them back, thx Clone bay!) but I finally won with just a Flak Cannon and Boarding Party(with just the starter weapon(well, an Ion), no weapon power upgraded). It was intense! I would like to see you try a challenge run like that, NL. Love your videos, keep it up!
This was interesting to watch. At the second phase of the flagship, you know you have to focus shields down, but you stopped trying! Well, the flagship does give you a lot to focus on. Firstly, leaving your shields injured for such a long period of that second flagship fight caused you to take damage you would have otherwise absorbed safely. Secondly, ignoring the breach and the drone on your ship is what allowed him to take on your shields, he was completely inactive and defenseless for a while before they finally repaired and got him going again! Thirdly, the medbay is a high priority hacking or disabling target when you have boarders, when they run for the medbay they're locked out, you run them down and kill them as they try to break the door down, or kill them as they're trying to repair the medbay! Other than that, I just saw you, with some very simple but normally serious handicaps, take down the second phase of the Flagship. However, if I may suggest, use your missiles or bombs on the shields, then teleport your boarders in. That way they take damage, and your attackers keep them too busy to repair, if you REALLY want to micro, you can move them out, attack again, move them back in, but that's probably for another day. With the situation you were in - and you had a slow, painful, DAMAGING second phase - you still did really well.
Oh, man. I just thought of a great idea. Usually a Medbay is much better than the Clone Bay when you use the Crew teleporter, but if you had Reconstructive Teleport...
NL, you don't lose the game if your ship blows up at the third stage of the flagship fight, it only ends when everyone dies. This is because the whole point of the game is to kill the flagship.
Rexels Tom Before AE you just get in the ship and kill the crew off, and just keep on killing their systems. Not sure how that would work with mind control though.
Use your scrap before fighting the Flagship! Upgrading the piloting area is extremely important and third level of doors won´t hurt either. You can upgrade systems even without having the power for them, this will allow you, for example, to keep your weapons up even though the system got hit by a single laser.
I'm sure this has already been mentioned but I'm not reading through the cesspool that is youtube comments. If you have extra scrap with no where you want to put it (like at the end of your game), you should try putting it into systems or subsystems. Even if you can't power them, it gives them extra hp so to speak. For instance it probably would have helped a lot to have max piloting or oxygen there at that last fight. Piloting especially since they mind controlled your pilot. Love the series and look forward to it every day keep up the good work!
what is the point of replacing your med bay with the clone bay if you teleport your boarding crew out of there whenever they're close to death? it's better to just let them get the most damage in and then die so they come back with full health.
even with how mismanaged that last fight was: weapons on the enemy ship were down, fires were under control, O2 was back online, and he had the cloaking up to dodge that last energy surge if he'd have just noticed it... at all. The fight was already won, sad times.
If you're using the cloak to evade the flagship's super-attacks, just use level *one* cloaking. You only need it up for 5 seconds to avoid the worst of the drone surge or octo-heavy-laser, and the cooldown will be over just in time to be ready again when the flagship's superweapon recharges.
Nl you can hack the flagship even if they have a defense drone, the reason is that a defense drone level one is terrible at tacking out hacking drone, they go through too often.
you missed so many option on the end, finnishing with 200+ scrap mean you could have upgraded your ship. even though you won power it, it still make it harder to shut down systems (like oxygene). also by doing so you could have your ion gun for the last fight thus making it easyer to pass through the zoltan shield (sorry for the poor english) greate series anyway, keep going please, i'm enjoying it
Lanius are excellent boarding parties -I intruder and boarding Droid is win win - the lock bomb, stun bomb are very useful and of course the healing bomb :)
Remember that repair station right before u attacked the flag ship the third time? Remember how u said "we can ignore that repair station, we can always jump away to repair"? God damnit
when you see slug or rock homeworlds by now, go to them. Encountering the quest that unlocks the rock or slug ship is pretty common, and those 2 quests arent too bad either. (You need second level sensors for the slug quest tough). Getting the secret ship is quite a challenge if you dont know how... you'll eventually figure it out :)
The little mistakes (that often end up having huge repercussions) just blow me away X-X Like depowering his engines for his shield, but keeping the Medbay powered with 3 levels. Sometimes I get so miffed I pause the vid and go win a run on FTL and pick the episode back up.
if your O2 generator is on fire then you need it doused and repaired asap, this is why things like O2, doors and what not need upgrading so that if they get hit then there is a length of time before they go down completely
You might want to keep using spare scrap in the last sector - like more weapon power might have won this for you, allowed for using the ion to take out the zoltan shield faster etc. or even upgrading other systems further - so they can take more than one hit before they are completely out - piloting especially. using the scrap on anything is better than not using it at all.
Northernlion you should download and install the Captain Edition mega mod to FTL you will love it! It adds so much more stuff like new weapons, enemies, abilities, and player requested functions like the ability to sell missiles and drone parts to the stores.
Mind Control - Teleporter is a scary combination. With upgraded mind control, you can have them destroy their own system or kill their crew mate before abducting them into your 0-oxygen teleporter room.
The last phase... You had 200+ scrap. You could have upgraded weapons, reworked power from the teleporters to the heavy ion to deal 4 ion damage to the super shield. Still, a boarding heavy ship has troubles with the last phase, not much to say. Still, the heavy ion might have clinched the win for you.
You guys shouldn't be too hard on him xD I know he did some very infuriating things but NL was caught up dealing with being SO very close to winning and having to deal with lots of things at once. Better luck next time NL =)
You can always upgrade your ship while at the last sector you had 200+ scrap man. Even if you don't have the power having some extra upgrades to your systems gives you some breathing room when they get damaged.
I have to say, I think 3rd level hacking is incredibly useful. You can drain level 4 shields and hold them for a few seconds, so in conjunction with laser weapons it lets you wreak havoc on ships that might otherwise feel safe.
If you time it right lvl 2 hacking does the same thing. It takes 1.5 seconds for a shield to go down, 6 for 4 shields, so if you play your cards right it should be enough (1.5 seconds + the time for 1 shield to recharge)
NL plz. just throw your scrap into piloting oxygen and shield upgrades before the flagship fights it doesn't matter if you can't put any power into them its bonus hp for the systems to prevent a downward spiral having 200 scrap does literally 0 to help you fight.
Oh NL... you had so much scrap at the end that you could've used to buy extra shields, dodge chance, hacking, ANYTHING... sigh... I love you, but my God.
That doesn't matter though - if you buy the extra slots in something, it gives you a buffer against taking damage; a single bar of empty space can mean the difference between a functioning system and a dead one.
I'm late to answer this, but power management is also a huge part of the game, even if you can't power everything. In the beginning of the last stage, you can't use hacking or teleport, so you could use the power to charge up the Heavy Ion, which works well against super shields. You also don't need to keep the medbay powered unless someone needs to heal. The final battle was absolutely winnable (in fact, it should have been fairly easy to win).
You don't have to power the Clone Bay to get the jump-healing. Also, you should just let your boarders fight to their death (the penalty is very little) -- that's the idea behind the Clone Bay...you no longer care about crew safety, letting them perform to their limit (possibly winning in clutch-moments), and reliving you from micro-management.
if you actually cloaked and put out the fire before it dealt like 5 hull damage, you could have won :( also why did you always return the boarders when you had the clone bay at level 3 witch revives your personnel in 7 seconds
You were so close! :P Sucks that you didn't win NL :3 The mantis cruiser is an awkward ship at first :D But it's one of my favorites ^_^ by the way. The plural of mantis is simply mantis :P great video today. Can't wait for the next!
There was like 2-3 minutes there at the end you could have jumped to the repair station. Oh poor NL. And when you couldn't use the hacking drone in the first fight you could de-power it and use that heavy ion you had.
NL you had 204 scrap going into the 3rd phase of the flagship, you really should never have scrap left over at this stage as you can use it to act as a damage buffer for your systems (you also could have got your heavy ion working on the zoltan shield).
3:10 - You can accomplish the same thing by OPENING THE DOORS. Plus, due to where the door is placed going through the pilot's room on the left side, your crew will ALWAYS go through the starboard (lower) airlock due to it being a shorter distance between things on the front and back half of the ship, so your crew will always pay a tax of health going anywhere, unless you micro them to avoid that. Yeah, there's really no excuse to have left that thing like that. At all.
Because of the 1 in 18 chance that a boarding crew will teleport into a breached room he leaves the breach where it is. Northernlion is the Zapp Brannigan of FTL: He'll send wave after wave of mantis crew members to clog the enemy death machines and he'd rather let his own ship bleed oxygen on the off chance an enemy will teleport into it. Classic.
also please upgrade your ship on the final sector, you had over 200 scrap when you went to go fight the last phase of the flagship and you could have easily upgraded your shields, engines, or even weapons
You don't need the clone bay powered unless one of your crew members id dead, your crew still heals every jump even when it's fully unpowered. Also upgrade your engines more.
I feel so bad about that ending. I think you had a lot of missed opportunities which you could have taken advantage of that might have let you just barely scrape out a win, but I know the feeling of *almost* being able to take advantage of a possible win just to lose out at the last moment. It sucks. Good attempt though! Maybe you could try for the event unlock if you don't feel like the Mantis ship is for you. Here's hoping for a Federation victory tomorrow!
NL I represent the committee for free the scrap... don't hold the scrap hostage in your basement... the scrap can go towards doors/sensors/piloting ... especially piloting so you will have dodge chance even without a crew member inside...
Dont be afraid to let your guys die, or hell you can kill them in an airlock if they're low on life to heal them to full, they gain more xp per kill then what they lose when they die.
For as many times as you pause during your combat, I'm so surprised that you don't ever notice that a system is down until 2 minutes after its been destroyed.
You could hack the pilot and teleport your mantis into there in the last fight. With the hack on the doors are locked so you could kill the last crew member and then boom!
Dammit NL, when you have the clonebay if you HAVE to worry about healing your boarders, don't flipping waste fuel on it, just throw them out the stupid airlock
NL, why buy the clone bay in the first place if you weren't going to use it? Its there so your crew can die over and over again with no repercussion. Teleporting them back on the brink of death is just pointless as if they die, they'd just come straight back. Basically, my point is it would have been better if you had used it for its purpose and not just an expensive fuel-consuming med-bay :D
A big problem with your play style is that you need to SLOW DOWN asses the situation before going at the enemy head first especially when your ship is damaged
The clone bay kind of sucks actually. Its only good when paired with the teleport heals. Unless you suicide, you enter alot of fights with half health mantis which cant get the job done, and you need to wait for them to die and revive again. Also since you lose skill, you rarely have the full 20% boost to fighting. Its cool for the flagship though so you cant just throw all your crew at it and not care. However.....if you take a hit to the clone bay then bye bye crew. I find it much easier to accidentally lose crew with the clone bay, then the medbay...since I never let my crew die with a medbay.
And simply by not venting the fire at the end you lost, that and not cloaking and repairing O2 as soon as possible. Oh NL when will you learn.
and going into the boss fight with only 60% health (although he could get repairs)
and not attacking the mind-control, which removed the pilot, thus reducing his evade.
Venting out fire is impossible when you don't have working doors, and the vented parts will stay without oxygen untill you have repaired it
Sandalf98 The fire started in the room beside the doors not in the same room so it spread to the door room after he let it burn, he even said something about not venting it.
Buys a clone bay so he doesn't have to worry about his crew dying. Worries about it anyways.

Could have cloaked there at the end to avoid superweapon shots... ahhh good ol NL
I assume he doesn't know you can drag and drop to control more than 1 unit?
sad thing is i watched kates FTL run and she does it all the god damn time.
"The enemy shot 3 lasers. I've got 3 bars of shield. I better cloak to dodge those shots".
Biggest mistake ignoring that fire on the third phase
Hoooly shit those last couple of minutes were intense! I was literally on the edge of my seat.
NL plz. just throw your scrap into piloting oxygen and shield upgrades before the flagship fights it doesn't matter if you can't put any power into them its bonus hp for the systems to prevent a downward spiral having 200 scrap does literally 0 to help you fight.
Oh, by the way, this series is awesome! I watch it all the time.
"we can always jump away to repair". has the jump but stays and dies 😔
'We're gonna let that for rage on.' WHY? D: nl why?
Oh NL... you had so much scrap at the end that you could've used to buy extra shields, dodge chance, hacking, ANYTHING... sigh... I love you, but my God.
He wouldn't be able to use them as he does not have any more reactor power left.
That doesn't matter though - if you buy the extra slots in something, it gives you a buffer against taking damage; a single bar of empty space can mean the difference between a functioning system and a dead one.
... and? When further explanation is required, I give it. Just like now.
What a beautiful, beautiful ending.
if you actually cloaked and put out the fire before it dealt like 5 hull damage, you could have won :(
also why did you always return the boarders when you had the clone bay at level 3 witch revives your personnel in 7 seconds
NL you do know after you sent the hacking drone it doesn't take drone parts right?
NL CLOACK A THE END AHHHHHHHH
Classic.
Perhaps you should teach your mantis crew members the art of the judo chop, as demonstrated by your recent Hitman series.
In the final stage of the flag ship, before the fire spread to the door room you should have smothered the fire.
also please upgrade your ship on the final sector, you had over 200 scrap when you went to go fight the last phase of the flagship and you could have easily upgraded your shields, engines, or even weapons
He cracked under the pressure.
NL I represent the committee for free the scrap... don't hold the scrap hostage in your basement... the scrap can go towards doors/sensors/piloting ... especially piloting so you will have dodge chance even without a crew member inside...
Dont be afraid to let your guys die, or hell you can kill them in an airlock if they're low on life to heal them to full, they gain more xp per kill then what they lose when they die.
when does NL notice that you can select more then one crew at a time?
For as many times as you pause during your combat, I'm so surprised that you don't ever notice that a system is down until 2 minutes after its been destroyed.
You had a fucking clone bay, why were you teleport out your crewmembers then?
They lose skill bonus mainly
Mr95noodles
They make it back after a couple punches, it's not like reskilling your shields guy
Cotelio Grahamn
after "a couple punches" lol. have you even played the game?
Yes. When my boarding crew dies they're usually 2 star again at the beginning of the next fight, if not before the end of the same one.
webraider
He's correct, you haughty ass.
You could hack the pilot and teleport your mantis into there in the last fight. With the hack on the doors are locked so you could kill the last crew member and then boom!
NL for the love of god, check out FTL: Captain's Edition. You will enjoy the game so much more!
Yeah making the game harder will sure make him happy, the game is too easy for him.
Dammit NL, when you have the clonebay if you HAVE to worry about healing your boarders, don't flipping waste fuel on it, just throw them out the stupid airlock
if only you'd gone to that last repair station...
you should get rid of repair arm, youre basically just healing at an hugely increased price before you can get to stores
NL if you're going to do boarding then please remember to kill the medbay!
Gets clone bay, still teleports out when low health
A big problem with your play style is that you need to SLOW DOWN asses the situation before going at the enemy head first especially when your ship is damaged
I'll just ignore that fire and let it spread
Look at all of that 204 unused scraps :(
you hav clone bay why do you keep teleporting your mantis out
The clone bay kind of sucks actually.
