Wait a second, did I just hear "You never upgrade the medbay"? One point in medbay is a fantastic investment! For just 35 scrap, I found that it's worth about two crew members over the course of the game. I don't think there's a single upgrade, crew, augment or weapon which gives more blue text options than the Improved Medbay, and those blue texts often grant new crew members or save existing ones. Is that lone hermit eyeing your jugular? Give them some Improved Medbay antipsychotics! Is that mining colony suffering an unknown plague? They'll pay 50-60 scrap and a weapon for the cure! Did you stumble across (or create) a slaughter? Why not revive a few sympathetic crew? There's not a single upgrade that more consistently and directly pays for itself. Not to mention it can give you the advantage even in the most desperate of boarding battles! This has been Narpas telling you why you need the Improved Medbay!
If you have some extra scrap it is always a good idea to upgrade your med-bay, oxygen, piloting and etc so that they don't fully break when they're hit once. They can also give access to blue options in some events and will generally end up giving you back what you paid for them.
2:02 "I'm gonna accept it" Like you have any other choice. How would it look? "Ok, crew is dead, we gathered every valuable on the ship. What's next Capt'n?" "It is not enough! I refuuuuse it! *pouts in the pioting room*"
Don't forget NL with crew members you can "box select" that is hold down the left mouse button and draw a box around them to select multiple units. Its very handy for moving units around.
*Starts this up* Oh boy... NL's gonna use the Mantis ship! XD This'll be good. Predictions: *He'll send the Engi in the Teleporter *Mantis Pilot (not necessarily a bad thing...) exclusively unless he gets a Zoltan for it. *For the most part, he'll try to defeat enemies using only the basic laser. *He'll board at least one un-manned drone. *If he makes it to the Flagship, he won't board the weapons, but instead go 4 on 2 in the Shields room. *NL will at least once try to fight in the enemy medbay. *He'll totally bomb his own crew members. (I love your work NL and am like at LEAST 69% kidding)
Nice run Ryan, I'm glad you're finally getting some experience with boarding, it's one of the most effective ways to play the game once you master it. Some comments: @5:20- I noticed you select crew by clicking, try dragging the mouse to make a square around the crew you want to move, you can control them in groups that way. @5:50-"You never upgrade the medbay anyway, right?" Actually it's pretty handy to have a level 2 medbay, it helps unlock many high value special events. It's pretty handy to have early, the hard part is deciding when it's possible to divert funds to doing so. @52:00- This ship really could use drone defense, I'm kinda scared going into part 2 now that the sensors purchase blocked that crucial component lol. Good stuff as usual.
You can click, hold and drag the cursor to select more than one crew member at a time. Let's be honest, it IS annoying when you order two or three guys to the medbay, by clicking on them separately.
NL! with level one teleports, only rockmen can survive in an de-oxygenated room before being teleported back. with level two all except zoltan can, and level three, every race can survive. so when boarding the drones ships, the level two teleporter can teleport back the mantis in time before they die.
You can totally click and drag across crew to select more than one at a time. It'll prevent you from selecting a crew member and clicking on the med bay one at a time.
"I'm just going to fight this ship the old fashioned way because bombing their drone system once to get rid of their anti-personnel drone is a very complex strategy." Going from watching Lethalfrag to watching NL is kind of like going from sampling champagne to sampling a donger.
I just want to say 3 things for part 1. You can control multiple characters (shift-click and click-drag), this can make moving people about easier. 2. Even though i can be dangerous, there are times that commiting to an attack is superior to teleporting back. Moving one wounded character away so the other can finish off the last crew member can save you a LOT of heartache when it comes to waiting for teleportation back and forth. That, however, is a bit micro-heavy, and I don't think it's something you need to be focusing on right now. 3. Focusing on defense over weapons may be wise - though automated ships can be a problem if you do this too heavily. Working on dodge chance, cloaking and shields first can really give you what you need to be much more worry free when boarding! On to part 2 for me! So far, I have to say I was thinking of a previous FTL advanced comment I read mocking the idea of you boarding, and how they could imagine how bad it would be. Proved them wrong to be sure! Let's see if it can hold up!
- Click-n-drag to select more than 1 crew, especially useful for selecting two boarding members for movement or med bay. - Don't prioritize Zoltan systems when playing a boarding style, since their shields block teleporter (unless Zoltan Shield Bypass). - When starting a boarding run, prioritize finding a Store and buy if possible: - Clone Bay - Emergency Respirators, making automated/Lanius ships easier - Reconstructive Teleport, making boarding much faster/safer - (the Backup DNA Bank is a nice to have too, but not required) - Get Mind Control over Hacking -- it's like having 3 boarders and 1 less enemy crew, plus it's a good defense against Mind Control on the last fight. - Note: you can also teleport crew over more than once, giving more boarders than enemies. - Get lifeform sensors, but you only need one... Prioritize in this order: - Slug - Sensors - Lifeform Scanner - Before boarding, check two things: - Do they have Med or Clone Bay? (determine weapon priority/strategy) - Do they have O2? (determine amount of power in teleporters) - Your weapons are mostly for taking out Med/Clone, keeping them from FTL jumping, and accelerating automated drone destruction...if you plan/buy for a warship, you are playing the wrong ship. Generally, with most play-throughs you are looking for ways to bypass/down shields, disable/destroy systems, and do hull damage (offense, with little defense). With a boarding strategy, you look for ways to protect boarders, disable enemy heal systems, and avoid ship damage (defense, with little offense).
The Mantis B ship is FAR superior, but it is kind of like Judas from BoI, insofar as you need to get a good start in order to get rolling, but if you get a little lucky, you will be rolling in scrap and overwhelm your foes with 4 deadly pirates. Just be careful to not get hard countered by the Flagship.
Ahaha, i went by the same logic and i turned up to the flagship maxed in defence with 5 fully combat train mantis' though 1 forced to stay and pilot and through massive misfortune a single small bomb weapon, this ment i could easily desecrate the stage one of the flag ship killing all bar 1 crew but then i realised i had no way of finishing off the flagship without a crew member on board, an accidental idiot ness ment i actually lost 3 of my mantis' on stage 1 i lost another 1 to finish stage 2 and then i ran out of missiles and couldnt destroy the 3rd stages super shield and cried for the like 20 minutes as the flagship struggled to work through my incredibly well protected ship with 2 defence mk . 2's cloaking max (for 2 crew) dodge chance ect. makes meh sad :C
That was just dumb strategy on your part. With the shield bypass, you split your crew. First stage- tele two into the missile launcher. Mind control the ion room if you have the ability. If you don't... it's not essential, you just have to play smart with the cloak. If you don't have a cloak? On the final boss? You're fucked no matter what you do. After they're back. Destroy the medbay. Then tele your mantids into it. They'll run in and be slaughtered to the last. After that, trash their engines and shields. Teleport back. And you can (slowly) end their ship with nothing more than a burst 1 laser. Hopefully you can do better than that. Now all their crew (except that dude in ion room) will be dead- at the very least each time a segment is lost one will die. So you can tele all four into the missile lancher room. The two that can fit will be there and two others will be on the main ship area to rampage. So the second and third stages are the easiest wins ever. Hell, I have a zoltan ship with a screenshot of a perfect victory. Flagship destroyed. Zero damage of any sort taken.
I LIKE watching NL play FTL because he's JUST above my level of very casual play in this game. I have avoided a lot of trouble just by watching his mistakes so I know how to avoid them.
Once you get through with the Advanced edition you should add the mega mod call the Captain Edition. It adds so much more stuff, like new weapons, quests, enemies, and it also adds some much requested stuff like the ability to directly sell missiles and drone parts to stores for scrap.
Some tips when using the mantis ship. You basically always want to board the ship through the " helm" cos that way their dodge chance is lowered and you are more likely to hit the enemy weapons with your small bomb. From there on just kill the opposing crewmembers so you get the greatest rewards. Also once you have the teleporter on lvl 2 you are relatively safe to start boarding drone ships. Just keep a close eye to your boarders since they are going to have around 10hp once the teleporter is ready again.
5:50 - "Never upgrade the medbay"? Pffft. Ignoring the "for a low amount of scrap, heal your crew members from the brink of death much more quickly so they can stop dying and get back to their jobs of 'running/fixing the ship'" deal that the level 2 medbay's got going for it, there's also the part where craploads of encounters give blue options with a level 2 medbay. It's absolutely required on boarding ships; it's merely "really useful" on anything else.
By the way NL, you can click and drag on characters, AND on the small list on the left. Really useful. I would love if they just added a ctrl+click function so you can select a particular group in stead of picking one that's not really needed.
I would absolutely love it if the basic laser was to ftl what magikarp is to pokemon, and you COULD beat the flagship with just the basic laser somehow.
You can box select units... oh god, please start box selecting units. Edit: Also, you keep leaving 1 power to spare, without powering up something like your engines.
Eoin \eoin\ as a boy's name is of Irish and Hebrew origin, and the meaning of Eoin is "God is gracious". Variant of John, by way of Ian, and referring to Saint John. A homophone of the name is Owen. Eoin has 2 variant forms: Ean and Ion.
A very good defense against the Flagship is a lvl 1 Defens Drone, an anti Combat Drone and Cloaking max lvl. And a Weapon Combo that works (Fire Bomb is real good at taking out the Flagship weapons because they can't heal their Crew in that rooms
lol best surrender offer ever "we're all dead have our stuff, please don't destroy our corpses" :D but seriously NL if there is one bad mistake you repeatedly make, its not noticing unspent reactor power. thats super important dude!. glad you are playing the mantis finally :D
"You never upgrade the medbay right"... I always upgrade the medbay - partial "shielding" to the sub-system and helps a ton if your oxygen is knocked out for clutch repairs
If you're exclusively boarding with no decent weapons, you might consider avoiding Rebel sectors due to the large amount of automated drones. Green sectors are also more likely to contain shops to buy weapons. I look forwards to future episodes. Good Luck.
when it comes to killing the crew i really prefer the slug cruiser with the bio-beam, just cutting all the enemy crew apart. I really got problems with the mantis cruiser, but still want to unlock them all. Any really good strategies for winning with the mantis? I just cant get it done...
Protip: You get more scrap and have a higher chance of sometimes getting special rewards (like new crewmembers, new weapons, more fuel, etc) when you defeat enemy ships by killing all their crew
I don't know how it is now, but the B layout of the Mantis Cruiser used to be the greatest thing ever. Defeated The Flagship with that several times on normal. You just teleport into every weapon bay except for the 3 shot laser (have 3 bar shield), and then you have cloak to dodge the Power Surge and a weapon to finish the ship off with. i guess you now need to have a mind control unit to counter theirs, but isn't that about it?
Wow you did well with this ship, I remember my first steps with the mantis ship and many lost crewmembers due to me forgetting to board them back. Some decisions though, I'll never get why you do them.
Northernlion. Please keep the games sounds and music at this higher volume in the next episodes. It’s nice to hear the music and sound effects better. Kind regards.
+Arahmar Borealis omg that first ship he killed the crew, and he's like "oh they are going to surrender and i'll accept", yeah they surrendered alright x3
You should have as many doors as possible open until you get sensors. That way you don't get surprised by fires you don't see. It also makes boarding attacks less painful overall.
im new at ftl so sorry if this is obvious but slugs are supposed to be psychic/work as sensors right? So how come even with a slug member the rooms of his ship are darkened?
like your videos. This one you seemed very confident but had a split personality that was very unsure of your decisions. I guess the way you rant back and forth to yourself is what I enjoy the most.
12:12 this ship was no threat! the drohnes may had be, but you don t rly know what drohnes they had. but that was not a rocketlauncher, it was a standard beam
The first mantis ship is my favorite by far. Combining clone bay, reconstructive teleport and emergency respirators you can just move in and move out, hands up and hands down. Too bad the layout B is just horsepoop imo.
Yea much better than NL trying to use a weapon that does no hull damage to do hull damage. But in seriousness i would imagine that it would work really well since it could speed up the crew killing process. The only ship i know of that isnt a win when you kill all the crew is the Flagship, so it could be pretty foolproof.
you know, while you are not boarding, you can very much just send you'r two mantises into the weapons and shield rooms they'll be much more useful there
It almost seems like you might want to grab weapons that commit to disabling systems; like weapons, shields, hacking, cloaking, since it appears simply wiping ships with your crew is faster there is little need for high damage weapons, however its probably good to have the burst laser or something for the flagship since it has the auto-repair feature and disjointed rooms.--- but I've never played this game just a simple observational strategy based on 50 minutes of watching you.
Heavy Ion is probably worse than Basic Laser, honestly, if I had to pick one. Minibeam is competing as well in my eyes. Two power for a one-shot weapon that has a longer cooldown than the ion blast I... I guess it has its' uses, but it's pretty bad IMO.
The strategy is basically the same with or without sensors. For me: -If they don't have a medbay/clone bay, just go to town. With a two-person teleporter, teleport into a room that's only two squares large so that they can't outnumber you in combat. Chances are that they're not that much stronger than you are, at least not to the extent that you can't teleport them back to heal before they get killed. -If they have a medbay/clone bay, take that out first, then repeat the above. Sensors are useful to see crew numbers and composition, but all that really does for me is gauge the speed of the fight - it'll take a lot longer to kill off five Rockmen than a few Engis, etc. EDIT: They're also useful so you don't send your crew members into a room with a fire or a breach. Still, sensors aren't totally necessary.
Has anyone else got 2 flak mk2 and 1 flak mk1? It wrecks so much ass it is almost op. 17 projectiles is dumb. Only the unmaned drone have a chance because of room layouts.
for future reference NL level 2 teleporter is just fast enough to bring your mantis back before they succumb to asphyxiation

lol, I was playing FTL and RIGHT after I saw your comment I upgraded the medbay and got the "mining colony suffering an unknown plague" event.
And it's the best area for combat.
If you have some extra scrap it is always a good idea to upgrade your med-bay, oxygen, piloting and etc so that they don't fully break when they're hit once.

Every time Northernlion clicks one mantis and then the other, a puppy dies
I was literally just about to comment this!
I have told him two other times. Hopefully it will hit him one day.
DirtyWizard i think everyone was...
You can also hold shift and click on more crew to control.

That game is HARD.
Thank god you posted this, I was just done with ep 17! :)

As soon as I saw Mantis A as the selected ship I immediately started imagining all the things youre going to do wrong :D
You can box select units... oh god, please start box selecting units.

3:21 Oh my God, NL, you're the best...
You can click and drag to highlight multiple crew and send them to the medbay rather than clicking on each crew member.
I really enjoyed this video! Please dont make this your last where your focus is on teleportation and boarding, alot of fun to watch!

NL please when moving two or more crew at once you can click and drag to select more than one at a time
When you are fighting in a oxygen- deprived room with Engi against expert Mantis boarders, you're glad for that level 2 Medbay...
Count yourself lucky, NL. Back in Vanilla FTL, the Mantis A Weapons System took 100 scrap to get its second bar.
Northernlion- wishing for things that are already in the game since it came out.

The NL story
"Mike Weston?" I love that show.

Press 0... oh my god, just over and over it never gets old. "EY EVERY- EY EVERY- EY EVERY"
Haha, that first ship surrendered, but your Mantis killed the last remaining crew member anyway. Vicious beasts, those Mantis dudes

I don't know how it is now, but the B layout of the Mantis Cruiser used to be the greatest thing ever. Defeated The Flagship with that several times on normal. hey Northernlion ,you can choose multiple crew members by clicking and then holding while you are draging the mouse
Northernlion you can drag a box over several crew members to select them and move them all at once :) great video by the way
Wow you did well with this ship, I remember my first steps with the mantis ship and many lost crewmembers due to me forgetting to board them back. Some decisions though, I'll never get why you do them.
As a "boarding guy", watching this feels like having 34.5 razors in both of my eyeballs
Northernlion.
Please keep the games sounds and music at this higher volume in the next episodes. It’s nice to hear the music and sound effects better.
Kind regards.
He scans the ship, and discoverers that everybody on it has died. "Oh, they're going to surrender" Uhh.... Yea... "surrender"
+Arahmar Borealis omg that first ship he killed the crew, and he's like "oh they are going to surrender and i'll accept", yeah they surrendered alright x3
Shoulda bought that Zoltan in that last shop for shields. Fun run so far to watch.
all things considered i think hes doing far better with the mantis ship than any of us could have imagined
You should have as many doors as possible open until you get sensors. That way you don't get surprised by fires you don't see. It also makes boarding attacks less painful overall.
Hey NL you know you can drag select multiple crew members right, very useful
im new at ftl so sorry if this is obvious but
slugs are supposed to be psychic/work as sensors right? So how come even with a slug member the rooms of his ship are darkened?
Slugs only show where the enemy's crew members are, they don't actually reveal rooms besides the rooms adjacent to them.
Explanation for the crewless pirate ship surrendering:
AUTOMATED MESSAGING
like your videos.
NL if you bother to read the comments, you can draw a box to select crew members just like a RTS
Keep it up NL! I've started doing my own recordings + streams on twitch due to having watched you and strumm.
Killing every crew on an enemy ship tends to give you more scrap and a higher chance of acquiring a free weapon
NL, if this series goes long enough, will you play with any mods?
The first mantis ship is my favorite by far. Combining clone bay, reconstructive teleport and emergency respirators you can just move in and move out, hands up and hands down. Too bad the layout B is just horsepoop imo.
How is a 4 man tele poop? o_o
TheLucidChiba Well yea that's good but it starts with 2 members and no weapons so it's always a rough and slow starter.
Mephy But you have 2 lvl shield and defence drone, that's very good. I think layout B is the best for boarding.
Hey, now that set up seems like a good idea. I should try that sometime.
***** What good is a 4man teleporter vs an Auto Scout with no oxygen?
Who the hell is protomario and why do the hell do i keep getting his ads on everything?
I was waiting the entire time for you to jump away with your mantis on the other ship.
I loled when you went for zoltan, the worst nightmare of boarders.
A Buttload is actually a unit of measurement. It varies per origin, but is 126 US gallons.
I think you vastly under rate the value of shield charge booster. It may very well be the augment that saves you in the end
Just wondering what happens when you jump when you got crew on the enemy ship?
The crew is lost.
I love dis series
Do weapons like the anti-bio beam work well with the mantis ship?
sure just dont hit your own guys with it
Yea much better than NL trying to use a weapon that does no hull damage to do hull damage. But in seriousness i would imagine that it would work really well since it could speed up the crew killing process. The only ship i know of that isnt a win when you kill all the crew is the Flagship, so it could be pretty foolproof.
you know, while you are not boarding, you can very much just send you'r two mantises into the weapons and shield rooms
they'll be much more useful there
It almost seems like you might want to grab weapons that commit to disabling systems; like weapons, shields, hacking, cloaking, since it appears simply wiping ships with your crew is faster there is little need for high damage weapons, however its probably good to have the burst laser or something for the flagship since it has the auto-repair feature and disjointed rooms.--- but I've never played this game just a simple observational strategy based on 50 minutes of watching you.
Its awsome with the augment that heals when ypu teleport,
just some advice: every action has a button. Try to use those instead of scrolling with your mouse. It will save u valuable time.
If you ever want to speedrun the teleporter is the way to go
Two hours of NL?
My body is reggie
Level 2 O2 is high enough to prevent a single hull breach per room from completely draining the oxygen
you need to note for yourself that you can mark more then one crew memmber at a time
Way to fly around with a breach for two sectors.
Long episode? Better be good!
Do you get more scrap if you kill their crew and leave the ship in tact?
Yes. It also has an increased chance of netting you an augment or weapon. (Depending on the Ship.)
Sweet, that's a really cool, way to balance this strategy.
That help me...I NEED MORE MANTIS!!!
Hell yes. I needed this.
never board drones unless you have a clone bay or lanius boarders, and small bomb doesn't do hull damage, only system damage
I would guess auto pilot comes in handy with boarding strategy.
FYI, Eoin is an Irish name, pronounced the same as 'Owen'.
Heavy Ion is probably worse than Basic Laser, honestly, if I had to pick one. Minibeam is competing as well in my eyes. Two power for a one-shot weapon that has a longer cooldown than the ion blast I... I guess it has its' uses, but it's pretty bad IMO.
Learning curve is slang for common sense
I almost never use boarding as part of my strategy, but it just seems so confusing and ineffective to board without having good sensors.
it doesnt matter if you just murder everything on board. some of the highest scoring runs are done with boarding because of all the extra scrap yo get
The strategy is basically the same with or without sensors. For me:
-If they don't have a medbay/clone bay, just go to town.
Wow NL, you should step up your boarding game. It's the best farming strategy ;)
If you didn't like the weapons on this ship then you will hate the mantis type B with no weapons.
Federation C aswell
