Thanks for the support on the series so far guys!
Nice run Ryan,
Comments as usual:
@2:40&@18:00- You don't need to walk on egg-shells with a clone bay turned on, in fact you could just suffocate your crew to heal them after battle lol.
Really, you can just let them die, it's even better usually so they come back healed for another round. The point of the ship is to teach how drastically the clone bay changes the way the game is played.
Only problem is losing the clone bay during combat, so unless you have DNA bank then leveling that up would be good just to be on the safe side.
Also they are awesome for spider events and such btw.
@22:00- Takes time for Oxygen to drain from a ship, their ships behave the same as your own when Oxygen is hit. Probably a minute later it would've worked.
@33:20- Only Mantis repair at half speed, Engi at double, everyone else is same speed.
I hope that helps.
22:10 The oxygen won't just instantly disappear after the O2 room turned red....Oh NL.....
Its true, oxygen takes an exceptionally long time to drain enough for them to start taking damage.
Also the 4 Square rooms take a lot longer to de-oxygenate because of their size and with a single crew member inside it doesn't drain much faster either.
"I like fighting ships without weapons because it means we can just use our ion to take out their weapons and then use the chain laser to take out their weapons"
Probably his finest utterance.
"I like fighting ships without any weapons because it means that we can just use our ion stunner and take out their weapons and then just chain laser to take out their weapons" - 6:06 NL 2014
6:05 "I like to fight ships wihout any weapons because it means that we can use ion stunner to take out weapons" Legit.
Drag selecting was there from the start, same as shift select for multiple units. You can even do that to the portraits on the left. This is top-down unit control 101, it's always like this unless the game is bad.
"They are trying to get away" - proceeds to attack anything but engines or piloting chamber. Five or so seconds later:
"Oh they jumped. I didn't even know they tried to get away."
- The Northernlion Story
In the store that you could've bought the Lanius (apologies for spelling), if you were to buy her and then replace your pilot with the new Lanius, then you wouldn't have to have oxygen on at all. Thus meaning no boarding at all.
Northern Lion. Something that could improve your play greatly is to stick to an order of operation.
Like after a fight check power levels and send crew to their room and heal them if necessary. Before a jump. Only takes like half a second to do.
Lot's of times you have fights with wrong energy settings and crew in the wrong rooms.
You DO GET the heal bonus even when the cloning bay is depowered!
It's annoying NL doesn't know, because it's one of those things you'd notice right away if you read the description of the system, OR just pay attention when jumping.
Forgot how good this series is! But hot damn the comment section is mean lol. I'm so much worse than you NL this is helping my play, so thanks for the old series =]
click and drag was not added recently
Lol right?
I laughed so much at the siren/muffler party comment
if you're going to try the 0 Oxygen trick on the Lanius ship you absolutely have to prioritize getting doors up. It might actually have been handy to buy the Lanius crew member from that store and put them in the door room at least temporarily. Also the clone bay clones crew members back with a penalty to all learned skills. So if you want to kamikaze don't expect your soldiers to be very good at anything else but kamikaze.
21:50 The reason the Engi did not die is because the ship was sealed up. Oxygen and vacuum both flow faster through a ship when doors are open and allow them to spread. With the Engi in a room that was filled with oxygen even with the oxygen system off there is sufficient air left in the room to sustain him for quite some time, especially in rooms that are 4 squares big. Units won't take asphyxiation damage until the room is in the red \ state.
"same as when the motorcycle parties where everyone get together and checks if their mufflers are still broken" great quote I hope I remember this.
By the way, Northernlion, you've gotten so much better at the game since you started this series way back when the original version of the game came out. It's really cool to see. Love your series!
Love the series NL! When you try to asphyxiate crew members, you have to be patient, it'll take some time for the oxygen to be drained and the rooms turning completely red.
You DO get the healing bonus even if it's not powered, so you can get three power for it but not actually have it powered and get healed +25/jump.
Im very happy that you're boxing multiple crew members now!
Still loving this series immensely, keep up the good work NL! :)
12:47 Only NL can hack shields with Ion Stunner
How can northernlion miss such obvious stuff while still being probably the smartest youtuber ive seen
I replace "ion stunner" with "Stone Cold Stunner" in my brain every time... I can't be the only one that does this... there has to be a mod for that
Hi, these are advices :
In general : Don't shoot weapons if they can't harm you. It'll increase your dodge and shield ability.
For this ship : When ennemies are boarding, close all the doors and remove oxygen energy.
In 21:30 , you've made a mistake. Oxygen doesn't vanish instantly. You must wait for the oxygen disapear.
You don't need to power the clone bay to get passive healing when you jump. For all these things which you are unsure about just check what it says ingame. Also when you take out O2, oxygen doesn't simply vanish much like if you enter an airtight room with no recirculated air you don't die until you actually breathe all the oxygen. Thus if you take out the O2 room, you have to wait a bit for the oxygen to deplete. This also means if you need power you can depower O2 at the start of a fight and periodically repower it to keep crew alive or power it inbetween enemy shots and depower it and put its power into engines when the shots come in.
For the attempt to kill the engi by disabling O2: The rooms don't get deadly until they become red and stripey. When you disable their O2 it takes freaking forever for rooms to naturally vent out. The only things that alter the rate of oxygen loss is opening the doors to space, fire(which will consume the available oxygen), and I THINK having more people in the room. I had a huge fight in a room once with O2 disabled and the room went airless pretty quickly relative to the rest of the ship.
NL, the oxygen drain from a broken O2 system is pretty slow, however, if you hack their O2 system, you can make it drain a lot more quickly. Try it a bit and see how it works for you, for the cases where their shields or weapons aren't worth hacking. Keep the series going, glad to see you move up to normal! Wish you the best of luck.
Also I'll keep posting this, you don't need to keep o2 on for the whole fight, you can depower it for a while if you need the energy.
the 02 was going down the room was turning pink slowly
You always forget that the Defense Drone 2 takes 3 power and not 2 so you can't use it until you upgrade your drone system at least one time.
Don't forget if you get hacked and you are using the open door trick to keep the oxygen out it will close the doors and let the oxygen in during and after the fight. This burned me on a run where I was trying to get the achievement for not going over 20% oxygen in the Lanius ship. Also doors should be a priority if you are going to use the asphyxiation route.
NL, when using the Lanius the way you do, keep three rooms filled with air. The enemy will only transport into oxygenated rooms, since it was only your piloting room that had air, they teleported into that. Just a thought, I haven't actually played the game yet. Keep the videos coming, your doing great.
Hi NL!
At 21:40 you asked if you were missing something obvious... This is what you were mistaken about.
Broken oxygen unit means that ship will no longer generate oxygen and start to slowly bleed out its remaining oxygen. This means that breaking oxygen unit doesn't suffocate the crews instantly!!! See that room where the Engi was? The room didn't have red lines going across meaning it still had some oxygen left.
Given enough time with oxygen unit broken, Engi would've consumed all the oxygen in that room and then start to die, but until then he would've been fine in that room.
If you were wondering why it took that long for oxygen to deplete... 2x2 room with one crew should take that long and you can see that room did go darker red, indicating oxygen depletion.
Loving your series so far, keep it up.
i feel like auto-drones got the most insane evades of all enemy ships. I had my chain laser aswell as a burst mark III, so 7 shots in total, plus an artemis for 1 missile. I missed three entire volleys, so 24 shots in a row. Sometimes, these goddamn drones....
Actually, for the fight where you tried to drain the oxygen I have a different tip for you: you could've waited until the shield was at level one strength, then chain lasered the room the engi was in. The ship had two hull left and the engi had ten health, so the one shot that hit the room would've simply killed the engi.
never a dull moment with your FTL runs fella
NL, you've a bad habit of stretching yourself too thin across too much systems, the amount of reactor power and scraps are limited, as well as missiles and drone parts.
Focus on maximising 2 systems is much better then having teleporter, hacking and drones all together, spending scraps for early shield and engine power will help you avoid hull damage, in turn saving you more scrap.
Aaaand some general advice. After you start seeing 2 shields, target the engine with multiple fire lasers, then the shields, especially if you can hack the shields. You are been exposed to 5 missiles instead of 2, without defense, because you miss so many laser shots.
NL, just so you know you TOTALLY get the healing buff without having the Cloning Bay powered. The healing counts as a passive system buff, like sensors and junk, so you get the heals anyway unless it's destroyed. the only time it needs to be powered is if you're respawning your crew.
NL, intruders automatically board onto oxygenated rooms :)
I love watching FTL runs
Been watching this series again soooo good
You dunce! you forgot it takes time for oxygen to drain from a room. Loving the series please keep it going for a long time.
this video was me screaming.. NORTHLION THERE'S STILL OXYGEN IN THAT ROOM! striped red room = no oxygen white =pink solids = I can still breathe :D
NL, u rember that Statis pod in one of the first episodes, it has a crystal inside, it has half of rocks specials, but can't put out fires, and lock down a room
The mark 1 defense drone is better than the mark 2. It costs less power and doesn't waste shots on lasers.
***** I've never seen a mark 1 miss.
dan240393 I see a mark 1 miss at least once every sector every run I use it you need to look a little closer, mark 2 misses just as much the reason to get the mark 2 is because it can fire every .75 seconds instead of every 1 second like the mark 1 does so that it can shoot more missiles when the flagship fires the 3 barrage.
Goombario37 I'm paranoidly attentive when it comes to missiles and I've honestly never seen a miss. Also that 25% increased fire rate doesn't help much if the shots are wasted on lasers; which they generally will be on the flagship.
dan240393 AE fixed defense drone 2's a bit. Their AI now prioritizes missiles over lasers if both are coming.
Can someone tell NL, that destroying auto-piloted rebel ships sometimes gives you a map of the sector? And also, the more crew there is on-board, the faster the oxygen goes down (that's why on that Pirate Mantis Cruiser with only a rebel on it, oxygen went down really slow).
You dont need to power the clone bay to heal and as you upgrade the amount of healing increases per jump you only need power when crew die
Since you asked, the mistake you made with the engi in the mantis cruiser in sector 3, was shooting instead of hacking again to stun him. A locked room takes time to loose the oxygen. Unless there were more crew members, you could get more scrap out of that for not destroying the ship. Sorry if you hear it again, hard to read 107 comments as a viewer.
I think it's hilarious when Northernlion attributes his ignorance to "Must have been added in the DLC. I mean, I can't just be woefully inattentive, right? RIGHT?!"
12:23 NL pulls a Falco, "I guess i should be thankful"
Ships have much higher dodge changse on normal so it is very important to take out their engines or pilot system. So that the fight's don't drag out to long.
But also same is true for your ship. You encounter much stronger enemy's earlier so you need more dodge changse earlier than shield.
5:52
I almost spat out what I was drinking. xD
Hey NL, at 8:30 you should have just let that fire go and see if it got out of control, it could have killed the entire crew(since they had no reasonable way of putting it out, unless it burned itself out which sometimes happens.)
NL- Next time you use the Lanius cruiser, open all the doors to make you have less than 20% oxygen from first jump. There's an achievement (to unlock B type) for getting to sector 8 with less than 20% oxygen in your ship.
Err before the first jump, I meant.
If someone takes your o2 out you also dont instantly run out of it. You are out of it once it is striped diagonaly and with the engi it was only at deep Red so would've prob needed to wait 1-2 mins for all the oxygen to run out.
Northernlion, I'm staying up all night for the NLSS. It better be a good one.
You should try the Hack Stun + hack medbay combo. Is so delicious evil!
NL - Tries a million times on Zoltan, finally wins
Me - Tries one on Zoltan, wins with flying colours
I
Hacking a hacking system is one of my favorite defensive maneuvers. It's worth a try for this play style as well.
Try attacking piloting more often, usually goes down in one hit and guarantees 100% hit chance until it's repaired.
Even though the Oxygen system is broken, all the oxygen doesn't leak out immediately. It takes a while to suffocate them via lack of oxygen. Fire is a very power weapon type to work with that because it eats all the oxygen in a room. Let's recap.
Oxygen doesn't leave all at 1 time, give it a minute.
Use Fire to eat oxygen.
Fire on Oxygen room is OP.
Every day is motorcycle day everywhere.
Every time is party time for Old Gravey.
*Reference nobody gets*
=T
ThatNinjaGuy4 I know the reference...if its from what I think its from
zmatt007
Sips, from ze Yogscaste? =3
Yesh. Prison Architect.
I was thinking Banished, but now I know which series I need to watch next!
O2 takes time to kill the enemies the way you tried to do it, cause they only need like 10% O2 to survive. I believe thats why the engi didn't die yet. Just needed to wait longer
Dude. The enemies oxygen works exactly like yours, it takes time to dissipate.
"don't do me like this" the Northernlion story.
The click hold select was in the game the entire time.
David Bédard He said in the video that it was probably added in the AE, which is not true. Do you watch the videos before answering comments ? :)
Haha, yeah maybe. No reason to get all mad bro.
Mad ? :x lel son.
21:35 Dude, you can SEE the shields room slowly turning red, right? You should know by now that it means that the oxygen in that room is running low. You just weren't patient enough. And emergency respirators only slow asphyxiation of crew members, not the speed at which oxygen runs out. C'mon man, basic knowledge.
Thanks for playing on normal! You get better by playing the harder difficulties anyway.
The engi didn't die because you have to wait until all of the oxygen in the ship is gone. You'll know when it is when you see the red stripes just like when your ship doesn't have oxygen.
Go Northerncloud, keep up the good vids!
Also,if your human crewmember dies and you have only Lanius, power down the oxygen so you have 1 extra bar of power until you get another crewmember.
Oh how could you pass up that lanius crew member at the shop! theyre so rare and useful on that ship too!
Even when the oxygen system is down, it takes time for the oxygen to leave the ship.
so weird... right when he started talking about sirens outside, a firetruck or something went past my house.
Jesus, NL needs to be more patient. He could have oxygen starved that one Mantis ship. I mean taking out O2 doesn't automatically remove all the O2 on the ship, it takes a while for the O2 levels to plummet, and you could see that it was about to drain from the shields room as the color of the room was turning pink
you could do he click and drag before the update
1. Automate ALL non missile weapons.
2. Take a step back in pause, and notice your crew is not in ideal position
I love this seires please upload more faster
the clone bay does not have to be powered to heal, as the game says, the heal over jumps are "passive"
and that terrible mistake was that oxygen takes longer to drain from simply destroying it, so waiting about 15 more seconds would have done it >:|
NL, next time you use the Lanius ship, a good idea is to vent every room in the ship aside from the pilot bay so boarders die from oxygen loss.
Aaaand he did EXACTLY that. Bye and thanks !
I mean before the first jump so he can get the acheivment
Mass selection of crew members was a thing forever NL
it takes time for the ship to lose oxygen, just because you destroy the system doesn't mean that they'll start to suffocate instantly
Usually when i am trying to flush out people i power down oxygen so that i can close off the rooms without them refilling with oxygen again. As long as you have your people in a safe pocket their oxygen should last long enough to kill off the intruders. or somewhere close.
"recently added"
Sure Northernlion
I like fighting ships without weapons so I can use my ion to take about weapons so then I can use chain laser to take out their weapons
the terrible mistkae was that since the enemy ship had 1 shield you could had hit it, have one shot pass by, and kill the engi that way.
This literally is making me wanna bash my head on a wall
You should minimize Oxygenusage with this ship: There is an achievement to make it to sector, I think it was 5, if you only have up to 20% of the ship oxygenized. For the most part you were there but there was a brief moment where I think you had too much oxygen.
it starts counting after the first jump, and he didnt empty his oxygen right at the start anyway. So he had no chance to get it from the beginning on. Wish he would read what the achievements are.
Ah that's right. Yeah. Too little too late, I guess.
I believe it's sector 8.
Also, if you're going for that achievement, beware of hacking. If a large room gets hacked and its doors closed, and you have oxygen powered up, you can get your oxygen "forced" above 20%.
The box select was always there, it wan't added in AE.
That's kinda sad - he could have (potentially) got the achievement for leaving the ship nearly completely depressurized, if he had just thought to depressurize at the start of the run, only (one?) jump before he thought of it.
Also - that ship with the lone engi you were trying to suffocate? Oxygen takes time to run out; you just weren't patient enough.
[7:06] Nope, it's been there for a long time...
You do not need to power the clone bay in order to heal your crew.
Did a person in 2014 seriously not know you can drag the mouse to select things? Has he ever played a video game before? Heck, has he ever used Windows before? It has been a common feature in all sorts of software, including video games for decades.
Hey NL, not really important but using the click and drag thing to move several crew members at once has ALWAYS been a part of FTL.
You are playing this like you are playing easy. You just need to take a breath and look at what you are doing before you jump. You are leaving 3-5 possible jumps behind in every sector. That means you are missing out on 50-100 scrap. Play a little more thoughtful and look at your jumps more in detail.
Also not getting your fear of nebulas. Yes they can be a pain, but they also reward you with a slower pursuing fleet and give you the possibility of 2-3 more jumps in a system.
NL, the click and drag thing has been there since the beginning, not from the advanced edition
Hey NL, can you do an Engi cruiser B run? Have been stuck on that ship for a while and can not unlock the next ship because i can not win.
sadly, it was like this since the first version of the game (drag to select more than one crew members)
Yay normal! Weird as it sounds like others I enjoy seeing you struggle a bit but there's something else that stopped me from watching it and that was spoilers on the new content - which I strangely don't mind if you earn it.
