Dang Pete one of your vids helped me convert an old AC system to R134 like a year ago and now here you pop up again trying to figure out a carb for my Falcon
The 240 and 300 ford inline six engines were a completely different block. They also have removable intake manifolds. The Ford family of engines including the 144/170/200/250 all share the same block with slight differences. All of their cylinder heads can be swapped. After a certain year, 68 I believe maybe later, the ford 200 and 250 shared the same large log cylinder head. The biggest difference between the 170/200 and 250 block was the deck height to get the increased stroke for 250 cubic inches. The earlier blocks had a small log head on them. The small 144/170/200 engine family is also referred to as the “Falcon Six”. This engine family is easiest noted by the intake log being cast into the cylinder head. This makes the engine very very different from the 240/300 inline six that ford used in their van and truck lines....
If one is going to swap heads on a 200 6 it's best to go with one off a 250 6 made after 75 as it flows The best of the small 6 heads and has hardened valve seats so there's no need for lead additive but I believe it would have to be decked to maintain proper compression ratio.
Can see where this would puzzle many since so many people have done swaps beforehand. Research will be king when starting anything approaching a rebuild as I've seen lots of substitutions made for the proper item. Thank you.
thanks Pete! I'm in the UK and I have a 53 F100 with all Bronco drivetrain and 170/6 motor with a yf carb which is missing the linkage between throttle and choke. Choke doesn't open much, going to get a replacement carb sent over - this video was crucial info, thanks mate!!!

Stay safe and well from Artie out on eastern Long Island. 👍🇺🇸 gosh you brought me back to the days of the carburetor 👍
I been seeing plenty of people using the 1100 autolite because of the 3/16 smaller diameter it increases velocity and low end torque.H.P. decreases only moderately on rhe high end where you don't use these engines anyhow.Best it increases mpg.
Thanks, best video I have seen on yt yet, going to give it a try, wouldnt have tried done it with out your video, thanks again. (65 mustang 200 ci barn find, )
Can you make a video of you connecting the vacuum lines from the carburetor to your vacuum advance? As well as any other hoses that need to be connected. I have an inline 6 240 with the YF carb.
i think you may have the 250 cyl head from a mustang the 240 is the same engine family as the 300 with removable intake the 144/170/200&250 all have the manifold cast into the head my 79 granada has a head that looks identical from the outside but has larger valves than the previous years if you want a little better performance look for a 78,79or 80 granada 250 cyl head they also have hardened valve seats for unleaded gas
If it was out of a Falcon it was not a 240 which was the big block 6 in the 240/300 family used for full size cars and trucks. Probably a 250 which was same block as 170/200 with a slightly taller height.
That is most definitely a 250 cylinder head I have owned both small and large block ford 6 cylinders and its not hard to tell after you work with them for a while. You can actually remove the intake from 240 and 300 but not the small block
There are a couple 250 heads wich have a removable intake but most are not ford origonal heads but one sure way to tell is if the distributor is forward of center of engine from front to back its small block six and big six has the distributor pretty much in the center but always on drivers side
Not sure if you still follow questions on this post but heres a shot. I have a 1983 ford bronco with the 4.9 300 inline 6. The carb is nothing but hut problems for us at 9k feet elevation. Everyone says modify to a 2 or 4 barrel. Id rsther figure out a better carb than the original motocradt single on it. Any suggestions on an upgraded carb and air cover? We are running high idle like screaming high and adjusting it can get us to a low scream. Still smells of fuel no matter what and at low idle scream it likes to die. So any suggestiins are greatly appreciated!
Hi. I have almost the same problem, but I am looking for the spacer you have on your car, what is it so I can look it up? I don't need the spacer to fit the 100, I have the carb you have but need the spacer. Thank you!
@@PetesGarage Do you think a larger carburetor, the 240, such as you show here can go onto a 200 6 cyl? We have had nothing but problems with her carburetor for years, preventing me from driving my sweet '66. We have replaced, and rebuilt, to no avail. I bought her in 1990 and have restored her with my Dad. He's been a mechanic for 50+ years ( a Studebaker lover), but even he is pulling out what's left of his hair and ready to think outside the box. Thanks again.
I've tried a few different carbs. Make sure you have the right gasket. A 200 doesn't need a big carb. You may have to play with the jets to get it right.
Awesome video. I just replaced my carter 1bbl on an f-150, but I feel like my fast idle is way too high. How do I adjust that? Just put the screw lower on the gear?
2:12 That hole you say is for the idle control circuit is actually a vacuum source to draw hot air from the exhaust manifold through the choke housing. Follow it back up the side of the carburetor and you'll see it leads to the choke. If you block that off, for instance by using a gasket with no hole there, it stops hot air from circulating to the choke, making it take a looong time for the choke to open. It has nothing to do with the idle circuit.
Is there anywhere I can find that gasket you used for the gasket that goes between the spacer and the intake manifold? I’ve looked everywhere and have had no luck. Your video has helped me a ton!
I got gaskets that didn't have the hole, carefully poked the proper locations with a screw, and then punched holes in them with an el-cheapo multi-size punch. Harbor Freight should have 'em. I had to put a few thicknesses of regular paper between the gasket and anvil to get the punch to go all the way through the gasket; I banged on the punch with a hammer to make sure it made it all the way. Once installed and engine running, before connecting the hot-air supply to the choke assembly, stick you finger against the choke assembly inlet to verify that you have vacuum there to suck the hot air in. Success!
Question, do you have a video on the choke adjustment on both the spring and linkage side? Also where is the choke pulling the air from on the manifold.
