Not quite 50 years ago as a 16 or 17 year old, I was driving my Dad's F100 with the 240 and "three on a tree". Had gone to town, was still in town but heading back home to the farm. Turned onto a one way street. Custom Chevy van with fancy mags, and a v8 with glass packs is sitting side by side with me at a stop light. I pulled out the manual choke a little to make it run a bit rough, as if I had a cam. Might have revved it a little once or twice just for fun. The light turned green..... Choke back in I started out normally. Not the van. And what he didn't know is that a cop who was a block behind me on the other street turned the corner at the right time to see this guy smoke his tires and really take off. Yes, in a van. I was very rarely a naughty teen, believe it or not. But that day, I confess I was bad. Cold blooded even. Hope he just got a warning. I miss that old truck. Have a hankering for a 4wd (for snow) F100 or 150, or maybe even 250 with a f.i. 300 and a 5 speed manual. Might put carbs and a points distributor in it for ease of maintenance, even if a bit more frequent.

Ed, have you seen the turbocharged 300 Big Six built by youtube's Power Nation? It produced 517 hoursepower & over 600 lb/ft of torque !! on the dyno! They detuned it some & installed it in an old 1966 1 ton dually as I recall. Rethink the engine swap. A matched turbocharger could be a gamechanger. It will make your engine more of what it now is, a torque beast, but with with more grunt!
I just got 1973 forklift that has this motor, it needs a little love, I figured I’d start here. I’m a mopar guy, I got a slant 6 in my ‘67 Power Wagon…
I had a 250 I6 in a 70 Maverick when I was a stupid 80's kid. As a stupid kid, I used liquid drano to clean out the cooling system one time. Ran for several years after, was later rebuilt and ran for more years after that. Could still be running to this day, for all I know. I loved the sound of it at idle. I can't imagine how long it would've run if I wasn't an idiot.
Have a 96 CCSB 4x4 7.3 with the ZF5 manual transmission, and a 91 SCSB 4x4 4.9 with the 5 speed. I use the little F150 for weekend trips to the dump and just to cruise around in. Truck rides great, easy to drive and my wife loves it too. The 7.3 does the heavy lifting, and is great when we need to tow and haul the whole family around too. Haven’t had much trouble with either.
I had about a dozen various F250- 450s 4x4 bush trucks in our fleet in the early - mid 80s .. everything from 77 to 85 .. some were close to 600k miles.. without doubt the 300-6 and and 460s pre efi were outstanding . a couple of 400m' s all did wel too. Most of our gensets were 300-6 powered, as were our on truck welders, pumps and compressors.. Were i to turñ n the clock back to early mid 80s , with todays knowledge, i wouuld still have no hesitation in bùying same again ..
Thank you for the video 😊😊, Hello I’ve been trying to look for another 300 to install in my 95 f150 which I believe has the same engine but mine is failing but I’m not sure what it is, if someone has one or might have some more information on the engine I would take any help I can take.
My 72 has a 68 300 swapped into it when the 360 blew up by the old man who owned it. It doesn't burn oil, barely leaks oil, never rebuilt. The truck it came out of rusted apart and was scrap. Funny story, the old man died because he was around 200yrs old and his neighbor sold it to me because he had no living family. I would park it illegally and get tickets all the time when I lived in Everett and laughed when I balled them up and tossed them in the bed stake hole. Fun fact: most cargo tugs at the airport have 300s in them. I got introduced to them when a rug came in with a horrible metal banging noise from the engine, we were really busy and it ran well enough if you were deaf. When it came in for repairs 2 weeks later the noise was gone and I realized it had a miss. Found no compression on cylinder 1, pulled the head and found the exhaust valve dropped and flipped upside down shoved steam first through the piston. I found a spare piston and valve, put it all back together and it went back to hauling baggage
I got an 85 F-250 with the 351W, and a 1992 F-150 with the 300. I absolutely love both trucks. My 1992 is currently being a turd with the alternator, it is the original Alternator from 1992.
The 240/300 series are the “big blocks” for the Ford six cylinder. To my knowledge, the 144/170/200/250 don’t share any commonality. The 240 was a good motor also.
Yea I think he might have misunderstood. To my knowledge, the 240 and 300 engine block share bore spacing, bore size, and possibly deck height but I don’t want to lie to you there. I’d have to go back to my old books to confirm the deck heights. My guess is he read about using a 300 rotating assembly in a 240 block, which would still be a 300. However, I would have to look at different combinations of rod length and pistons that were available to see what could maybe be done. ( Think Jeep 258 crank in a 4.0 block ) My guess is Ford would have done this though if a viable engine displacement would have resulted. A 240 head will fit onto a 300 as well, but 240 heads are almost non-existent now. The 240 had a combustion chamber of 68cc vs the 76cc of the 300. Otherwise, the heads were almost identical. Also, some industrial and heavy truck variants of the 300 had a forged crankshaft rather than cast steel.
I won't say you are ruining anything but as far as high performance I do want to point out Scott Donohue won the Baja 1000 3 times with this mill in his rally truck.
I've heard someone say that their industrials were 4 bolt , but that is the only reference. Given I've have wrote a lot of cheques for our repair shop, and given we had at least a dozen 300/6 motors on the payroll, nothing rings a bell..
Don't let no haters bother ya bud I had a sweet 79 Ford with a 300 six in it I loved it but I was young the truck was show truck good looking jacked up on 40 in monster murders bud I wanted that V8 sound with chrome tips coming out in fron of the tires so 351 Windsor build we go It had a granny 4 speed in it so I just went with the Windsor so it would bolt up to bell housing easy swap and I might say it got the ladies attention I was 16 worked on it from 12 years old with dad working to make it the baddest truck in school and it was me and my pap was awful proud
Beautiful motor . Love Tham ❤️ to bad my 67 hi boy 3/4 was stolen. But I still own a 300 6 in a 95 e150 van that I've completely rebuilt . 297g miles no oil consumption running today & forever providing it's not outlawed by government. No more 1 tons or larger gas or diesel pickups or motor homes A or B models can be sold in Washington state. Dictatorship
Oh man, that would be a great engine. I've got an EcoBoost in my 2015 and it's pretty fun. Maybe I should keep the 300 once I pull it and build an "Old School EcoBoost" for another Bullnose.
I'm not trying to sell anyone on an engine swap. I'm simply explaining why I'm swapping mine. The swap will be a big part of my channel and telling everyone how great the 300 is without explaining why I'm dumping it isn't fair to either engine.
I see that you have the same crappy red paint that my 85 F150, 300 six 4x4 has. At least we have the greatest gasoline in line 6 ever produced. I've modified my with a DUI electronic ignition, Offy 4bbl intake and Headman headers. I also replace the exhaust to 2 1/2 inch tail pipes. Vast improvement over stock. Out pulls and gets much better gas mileage than my son's 94 F150 with the 351.
It won’t be tougher than the mopar leaning tower of power 6 or the La 318. Sorry those were the toughest engines ever built. The ford is a great motor…
I'm building turbo kits for the 300s, will blow away any v8 smaller than a 460 while sipping fuel and unparalleled powered Should look into the boss 300 from 1970, made about 625hp which the small blocks of the time could not do
Tough engine. One of the reasons they last so long, yhey don't have enough power to break anything. The carburetor on mine.looked like it was borrowed from a lawnmower
Àll you need to know about them is they made millions of them and stuffed it in everything and they were underpowered gas guzzling pigs no topend power
Friends not liking my '87 F250 4x4 with a 6 cylinder joked saying, "I could of had a V8.
That was then. Friends are gone. Truck is still here
They need to bring it back !
While all other engines in the 80s had rod knock and blowby, the Ford 300 straight 6 lived.

I'm a ford man love the 300 6 but it's a tuff fight between the big 3 i6s the slant dodge was a very close competitor than the 250 chevy in my opinion
The 300 was my favorite pickup engine. I always got 450 to 500 thousand miles before rebuild. And that's under heavy construction conditions.
got over 50000miles and still going strong.
What year is it ?
Had one and a Chevy 250 str 6, both were outstanding great torque at low rpm better overall than any V8 ever made

Great video.. thank u..
Friend went through couple of fuel injected heads pulling horse trailers up grades. Switched to carburetor head no more problems.
Is there a split exhaust manlfol like dutra duals fo
r slant six?
Is there a cross flow head available? Without having to buy 3 heads and cut/weld?
Thanks Ed, appreciate the info.
I wanna stick a turbo on my 300 i6
where did you find a stroker kit at? cause from what i understand they dont exist.
One of these with *three* IDF40 Weber carbs? Headers? Lots of internal work to make it run *especially* well?
Hold up…..stroker kits for a 300? I can’t find one. I’m building a 300 with an intake/carb/cam upgrade and would have LOVED to stroke it.

I daily drive a 1996 f150 4x4 5 speed 300 inline, yes no replacement for displacement. Hinse my bbf 429, 460, an 400. I can't say enough about a 300.
What ford 300’s came with a 4 bolt main?
Ive never seen a 300 with a 4 bolt main only 2 bolt mains but crankshaft in other versions can be forged.
I've heard someone say that their industrials were 4 bolt , but that is the only reference. Given I've have wrote a lot of cheques for our repair shop, and given we had at least a dozen 300/6 motors on the payroll, nothing rings a bell..
Had an F 100 only issue was intake ehaust manifold warpage. 300,000 miles once that was fixed
Other than the fiber timing gear, they were very durable
Had 89 85. the 85 carb model had more power. both were in F150s 4 speeds.

You rarely have to fix a 300 six.
Wonder why they ever quit making this. If they wanted this eco boost mess, they could’ve done it with the 300!

Emissions might have cancelled the 300 - but the tooling was also likely getting worn out. And the 300 wasn't powerful
Id like to here about the 460 and the c6
Thanks for the feedback!
I don't think I would buy a Ford truck that doesn't have the 300 6
Are they that reliable?

The Cleveland is definitely on the list. Thanks for the suggestion!
You can make over 500 HP and 600 + pounds torque with simple bolt together parts for the 300 six. Dyno proven.
love the video, except for the ai

They're reliable because they're a solid, simple design. Horsepower has no factor. You can raise the power on these and they'll still be reliable.

I had one in my 1989 F150. Sucking through a single barrel carb, it got 26 mpg. Better still if I stayed out of it. Wish I'd kept that ol beast.
