even though this is his first long-form video on a single artist & their work, i think we can all agree the beard is the star of the show.
idk man, Ruff's vocal fry for a full 10 minutes is unironically absolute perfection
nah, i actually loved his take,
it made me rethink how i see the album etc. nice editing too
Also his unique editing
I loved the 10 minutes review.
Thank you 🙏

“George Bush does not care about Black people” is still a very valid take.

my favorite kanye moment, people don’t even talk about what he said leading up to it, which I think is some of the realest things he’s ever said. I know that Kanye’s still here. He was always here.
@@Thorsyy What would make someone think he wasn't "still here" to begin with. Kanye didn't turn into a new person out of nowhere, he's changes his opinions on things but he's still got the same energy he had before. People act as if Kanye lost his soul once he stopped acting eccentrically in the ways they would have preferred.

Ruff... please share whatever and whenever you feel like talking about things you're are passionate about. I hate this cliche phrase, but this video was indeed a breath of fresh air. It's just you expressing yourself about something we can see you clearly thought about. No fluff, no over the top intros or fake mannerisms, no... "character exaggerations". Do you know what I mean? There are those photos which people pose for, every little detail is a fake posture to get "just the right picture", they add filters, they edit the whole thing... And then there are those photos we take, not exactly planned, the person may even pose for it but it's a pose conveying who they are, not only what they look like and want to look like. Those are the photos which capture a moment, an essence of something. Natural. Genuine. And those are usually the ones we really love and connect to. The internet needs more content like this. With unique style and taste related to real people being themselves through their artistic take and perspective. Anyways, typed to much. Hope to see more 10sec or see 10min videos, I'll be here either way.
Thank you so much, what a thoughtful and humbling comment! I’m honored to be that fresh air for you, I’ll try to keep doing what I do how I do it 💽
Wish the vid was longer! Great analysis and I agree with the idea that everyone should attempt their own tracklist for the album, it can be quite fun actually to make ur own compilation.
Donda came out right around the messy end of a relationship and a psych wward stay for me. The album had me on "Jail" from "Single life aint so bad", and never let go. DONDA is one of Ye's best musical statements ever, and it's TPAB levels of personal for me.
Lots of powerful, personal lines on here. Glad to hear you connected with it too, hope things are going better for you!
@@ruffcriminal the album starting with Jail basically is perfect for the message he's trying to convey. Living in the stadium, room looks like prison, free Larry Hoover/gang leader, Kanye compares journey of mental/spiritual prison he feels he is in to litteral jail and many of the featured rappers talk about gang violence or beefs. Also Come to Life ends with the words I'm Free... from Jail track one. Just suggest you listen to the album again with that context. Most of Kanye albums since MBDTF have a similar structure of him starting off more in his ego or unenlightened ex Bleached b-holes, and end with him with more clarity through his mistakes. Watching the Throne is an excellent youtube channel and podcast to understand his albums better, so if you're a big fan ,I guarantee you will enjoy and appreciate Kanye more after listening, they litterally analyze all of his songs and albums and put them in context. Your content is great too btw just like sharing because I'm a Ye stan.
I’m totally with you. DONDA helped play a role in my restoration in my faith in God. It wasn’t the only single thing, but it served as modern worship music for myself personally. On a level I could relate to
@@juju-vl7oj The album ended with "I'm Free" which then led to "He's done miracles on me"
This beard is getting intense.
Good.
I think this album is going to age incredibly well within Ye’s discog, in a few years I can see it cracking top 3 Ye albums for many people.
It's already in my top3
the censorship just makes it flow too awkwardly imo. if it was uncensored it would be in my top 3

Lovin da beard
I personally interpret the black cover not as a “make your own album cover,” but as a phone screen.
Yeezus was a open casket funeral for CDs, it was a cd album
JIK was an old school gospel record, it was a vinyl
Donda is an album for the playlist generation, it’s a phone screen, which kind of goes to your point of play with it yourself
I completely agree with your analysis otherwise
That’s the black mirror cover. For me, it was the only way he could show that the absence of a mother impacts every facet of life.
probably the most exciting, odd, artistic, chaotic album rollout ever. absolutley loved everything about the doda experience. ye is my favorite artist for a reason
The album rollout where he invited a sexual assaults offender and a domestic abuser to the release of his album dedicated to his mother? Thats just one of the messy things he's done for the album. People who like him as a person and artist are weird as hell. sometimes you need to separate the artist from the art.
@@Raccocooney yeah like, i really like a lot of ye's music (tcd is definitely in my top 10 albums oat), but I'll never get the people who be like "I'd take a bullet for kanye" or "he is the most beautiful human being of all time"
@@Oliver-hd5fk definatlly wont take a bullet for him, and no i dont think he is the greatest human being- definatlley not. however his art has always touch me in a way a few artists did. wether art ahould be separated from the artists is a good discussion, but no I don't condone supporting abusers obviously.

Really enjoyed this video. Truthfully didn’t know how it’d pan out compared to your 10 second reviews, but surprise surprise, you’re just good at making videos. Keep it up bro excited to see where you go
2:15 oh bro, Donda timeline goes back to the beginning of 2020 😩😩
Loooved this shit, absolutely would love to see more of these deeper dives. 🔥🔥🔥
The way you tied the idea of the "living album" to the Donda stem player is something i had never thought of before but goddamn it makes total sense. To add to the pool of theories and I remember one going around in between LP2 and LP3 about each LP representing each plane of existence in the afterlife, LP1 is hell, LP2 is purgatory, and LP3 would be paradise/heaven. Most of those theories long died out before LP3 but considering Kanye's entire relationship with his mom and LP3 centering around his childhood home, maybe they were onto something. 🤷♂️
Thank you! I hadn’t heard that theory, but I love trying to piece things together like that!
When you said that watching Kanye on SNL was the moment you "got" hip hop/rap, I had the same moment. I bought Yeezus based off that performance, listened to it when I got home and then it all kind of made sense. I opened up to much more hip hop/rap after that, going back through the golden ages and trying to stay current. Kanye and Kendrick did that for me, Kendrick's performance the following year also blew my mind. The reason I signed up for Spotify was to hear TLOP since it wasn't going to be a physical album and that was crazy to hear when it first dropped. Plenty of people give me shit for digging Kanye just because they don't like him as a person, granted I may not care for Kanye's personal life that he projects to the entire world but he makes some amazing art and that's what pulls me back. I gave Donda one full listen when it was released and I haven't gone back to it since, I need to go back to it and give it another chance.
cool
My man, thank you 🙏
I've tried really hard to enjoy and appreciate this album this year, and throughout this video I was kinda getting down on myself for not being able to appreciate it how you did. But then you threw in the line at the end, making sure that we found an album that resonated with us this year. This year was great for music, and I am super grateful for the numerous albums that came out this year that have become some of my favorites of all time.
Hey, we can’t (and shouldn’t) all have the same opinions, art is too personal! What were some of your favs this year?
Your version is actually sick, plus I love the themes.
This is the best reviews of any album I’ve ever listened to. You’ve distilled what’s been my feeling about the album in an eloquent, funny, and succinct manner. Hats off bro.
I was at the second listening party in Atlanta. Extremely moving, interesting, and fun experience. Love how the rollout is equally as thematic and meaningful as the album: the black fashion, the mask, the prison like environments, the criminals (DaBaby and Manson). One could even highlight the Free Hoover concert as “in theme” with Donda due to the forgiving of Drake and the prison reform message.
True
I think the reason I love Donda so much is because I got to see it take shape. At the end of the day, I didn’t care what sequence it was in, I just cared that I could listen to these songs that I got to see Kanye work on over time. It was such a cool experience and one I will never forget.
i am glad you posted this, i was thinking the same thing about Donda being a part of Ye’s ‘living-work’ and this made a lot of that click.
Anthony Fantano has been real quite since this came out

hey Ruff, absolutely LOVED hearing your thoughts about the album! even though I'd consider ye my favourite artist of all time as well, it felt like I just asked a friend at the bar 'hey, why do you like that DONDA album so much?' and then heard about Kanye and the rollout for the very first time - felt very unscripted and straight from the heart. would love to see you talk about more stuff you like for longer than 10 seconds!
Thank you so much!
I want to share a story
Before Donda dropped, I saw this Watching the Throne notification telling me “Donda Dropping at 8:00 am EST” for something like that. After seeing that I checked the time. Greatest moment of all time

Would like more of these longer videos, love it
I love how pure this guy is I can just feel the love thru this calm ass register of voice 😂
Love the short videos but if u gonna keep making videos like this I will also enjoy as much if not more than the 10 seconds
This is definitely one of those albums that may not be fully appreciated upon release but over time will be more and more looked up upon.
Love your videos, great to see a full one. Wanted to say your choice for the cover art pulled me in on the thumbnail
That’s good to know this is your album of the year…I’m debating where to put it. I switch from Top 10, to Top 5..or Top 2 & it’s not 2 (Word to Drake 😂) in all seriousness this album released during a time I needed it most. It’s powerful what music can do.
Also ironic you mentioned Eminem at the end 😂 cause while Kanye was your introduction to Hip Hop, Eminem’s catalog from 1999-2010 was my intro to Hip Hop - album wise - but yea..lately I’m not a fan.
Great video Ruff 🙌🏽 can’t wait to see your year-end list.
Thanks Jordan, I’ll be sure to tune in if you make one too! Appreciate you sticking around since the early days 🙏
this is so epic. i love kanye, and i love this album. i never knew about the stem player, incredible! Andre 3000's verse on Life of the party is worth a thousand words. Kanye and who he works with are just painting beautiful audio waves for us. true pablo picasso. I've recently discovered frank ocean, i know im late. But the vibes of this and frank in my playlists is just amazing, they are futurists for real. jesus lord, come to life, new again, praise god etc, there are so many to recommend, this album just feels so good to listen to lolol. such a strong message i could gush all day about everything, but this video was very nice to watch thank you, very informative surprisingly. you said you wanted to talk so here, need more random 10 min vids, such a treat lol, also still learning so much music from the 10 sec reviews, just keep going please thank you buddy. sorry for bad english, im american.
i've been missing you daily short videos; getting a 10-minute analysis that i totally agree with and gave me more to talk about really made me feel like we're in holidays
thanks ruff
ik you are known for mainly making short form stuff but god this was a good video, looking forward to more of these types of videos
this was incredibly heartfelt and honestly a perspective ive not seen but the zamn meme fucking sent me
I agree with making a playlist and/or edits with very convoluted and fat albums. There was a version of “The Life Of Pablo” that was shared online for free, called “The Life of Paul.” Although it was very ambitious and longer than the original, it was very very fun to listen to and you can tell that the creator was a fan of Ye. So I appreciate this approach, fam
Your sequencing is sick! I'm loving your version of Donda
Damn, never thought of the album in this DIY way, it really does create a more personal relationship with the music. Great video man
Thank you for finally talking about the “living” aspect of donda cuz no ones talking about it kanye changed the way I think about a piece of music or art and if a final version of a song even exists in the digital era
I don't think I realized how important the sequencing of this album is until the Deluxe version came out. On the original, Donda (the song) felt like a somber moment, like Kanye was taking a moment after this intense crescendo on Heaven & Hell to pause and reflect on his mother's legacy and his relationship to it using her own words. A nice, soft, touching moment that brings the energy down to prep for Keep My Spirit Alive (unrelated but thank God we got that Kaycyy hook back lmao). But on Deluxe when Donda (the song) comes after Never Abandon You Family, it just hits so different, it's like he feels like his mom's condemning him, and the song feels so shameful. His understated vocals go from "This is a quiet song, I want to let my mom speak and just ad lib for emphasis" to "I'm ashamed of what I've done, my mom would be so disappointed in me". Honestly I have a hard time listening to it on Deluxe, the type of shame it communicates to me is really uncomfortable, there's no glorification, it feels really personal and sad.
By The Time I Get To Phoenix has AOTY for me, but Donda was my most listened to album by far. So many skips, but the songs that hit hit so hard.
Anyways, great vid, really liked hearing your thoughts more fleshed out! (Really dig the short stuff too tho lol)
The second listening party was, to me, the best. All of the amazing shots Ye posed in, the energy, everything was great. I even liked how I could almost sense when Ye knew he'd be cutting out a verse or adding one, like, you could see him listening and pondering how to work a song out. If you want to see a high quality stream of the event, lemme know!
I would appreciate that, can you send me an email or reach out on Twitter?
@@ruffcriminal Hey man I emailed that to you btw.
Please do more long-form video like this cause I really enjoyed it :)
I appreciate that you're video is still on brand 10, lol, 10 seconds, not today, now it's 10 MINUTES!
Can't wait for the 10 hour video
Every time I listen to this album, I like it more. At first, although I liked a few tracks, I was kind of disappointed. On my second listen, I found a lot more to like and started to think a lot more highly of it. I’ve now listened front to back 5 times, and it might just be my album of the year.
Honestly I loved seeing you make you own version, because that's exactly what I ended up doing. I even put a cover on it as well. And when I listen to the version of Donda that I sequenced and cut tracks out of, honestly it'd probably be my favorite of the year too.
Great video bro! Huge Kanye fan and I must say I was and am blown away with donda. Didn’t expect to like it this much. I’m gonna def listen to your version with the changed order cuz that just makes so much sense lol
Thank you, hope you enjoy!
Love this deep dive much much much more than the 10 second reviews, great hearing your thoughts in long-form!
Thank you so much for the Ruff Cut, I'm three tracks in and I feel like you really brought this album to life. Oh and the longform video when you feel like it is such a treat, Thanks Ruffffff
I'm very curious to hear your personal CD mix/sequence of the album. Like you said you tinkered with it for a while, and with the stem player your able to play with the root of the songs. I'm glad you made playlists for multiple platforms of your version, but id like to hear the Ruff Cut in it's completed form. Then again with the way Ye does his albums nowadays, I'm not sure that's entirely possible. Still I'm glad you shared your thoughts on Donda, and your Ruff Cut. Ye has been a mixed bag for me lately, but I know he's still capable of great shit. And this vid, and the Ruff Cut is proof of that. Thanks man.✌️
Your ruff cuts inspired me to make my own cuts on other artists’ albums (including Donda of course). Making these cuts are so fun and rewarding because you make it based on YOUR own preference which is better sometimes.
Thank you Tfue! Didn't know you were this invested into music but keep going dude
this was a fantastic video, I love this style! Would love to see more of these videos sprinkled in every now and then about more of your favorite albums!
That CD cover is awesome. I also tinkered with the album to cut it down to 10 songs:
1. Donda/South Carolina (on a UA-cam channel called "Sunday Service Choir")
2. Believe What I Say
3. Pure Souls
4. Hurricane (10 minute version with all the original Yandhi features and SSC)
5. Jesus Lord
6. 24
7. Lord I Need You
8. Moon/Only One
9. Come To Life
10. No Child Left Behind
It's still about 49 minutes long, but it's made me appreciate the album even more, especially since it's proof of the constantly changing/"living album" concept. Loved this video, would not mind seeing more longer-format vids on the channel
Ruff....pls make more of these. Your electric editing style and tbh analysis is much appreciated
You are absurdly well-spoken sir. I also was really impacted by Donda along with it’s rollout and I agree that this album was a real standout moment culturally of 2021.
Perfect title format btw.. "I want to talk about ______" is catchy, and eye-grabbing, also simple. Nice :)
This was a really good, well produced video. I don't even really like Donda that much, but if this video is a taste of what's to come for your longer reviews, I'll listen to them all.
You dropped an exclusive Kanye album I might actually listen to all the way through. Thank you
I also curated a playlist, cutting out Tell the Vision, Junya and the pt. 2s. I listened to it so much my Spotify top 5 songs were all from Donda. I really love this album. If you're patient and spend a lot of time with it it really gets under your skin. AOTY for me. Some of Ye's best work. Looking forward to having a listen to your version!

Glad that Donda was one of your top albums. Loved this video, definitely fresh to see you talk more about your opinion. Still keep the 10 seconds going, but I wouldn't mind 10 minute sprinkles when its really passionate and meaningful to you. Absolutely loved it!!!
Really enjoy hearing your thoughts and feelings in a longer format like this, especially with the edits. Would love for more of this kind of stuff with other albums that've been on your mind.

Man, the Donda Deluxe playlist IS the album. And the quality is much better!

Donda was a hella personal album for me as well, and I'm so glad you went in depth with it. Great stuff dude.
I was not expecting a ten minute review from THE Ruff Criminal, but I am so glad to see. This is such a cool passion project to see you put out and I'm glad to say I watched the entire thing. You did a great job at summarizing the DONDA rollout and you captured a good moment of hip hop history here. Love the conclusions of Kanye wanting his fans to mess with the album.
What I always love about your channel is how even though it started out as a bit of a meme with the 10 second format, the lack of depth or discussion within the videos made people talk about the albums more than a formal review that often times are approached as if there’s an objectively correct answer. It’s very communal. Though this video is longer, it still accomplishes the same thing. This is what I wish music discussion was more like. It’s very cool hearing you talk about the album like this.
As for Donda, a lot of what you said about the sequencing, track selection, and other tiny changes also applied to me as well. I thought the album was sequenced horribly, is way too long, and I also have a bunch of specific critiques for individual songs. Without getting into the specifics, I thought I’d share what my track list would be.

Felt less like a review and more like a short podcast, a very personal and in dept approach. I enjoyed it and will be listening to donda with your review in mind.
this was a wonderfully executed video, I really enjoyed hearing your perspective on not just the album but the rollout. Fantastic video, and I'm excited to hear what other albums you enjoyed this year.
Love the long form critique. This is great man!
No complaints from me if theres more of this format in the future, great video 👍
more of this format please! i obviously love the concise 10 second reviews but the occasions deep dive would be more than welcome :)
I really think that if Kanye hadn’t been doing all these crazy antics over the past year or two, and that if he didn’t have DaBaby or Marilyn Manson association during the rollout and what not that this would no doubt be amongst talk as a top 5 album in his discography. The general publics reaction to this album has been the best I’ve seen since MBDTF I swear.
almost 100k subs !! you killed the longer-form video I’m excited for more. thanks for makin a great music year even more fun mr. criminal, i wish you all the success in the world
I love ruff! He said 10s? No. How about 10m for my album of 2021. This was perfect!!
I just want to defend the OG sequencing a bit lol. I think there is coherence and flow and a narrative structure there. Would be interesting to have a discussion about that.
I’d be down for that! The notion of the “OG sequencing” is worth discussion on its own due to all the listening parties
You are spittin but i think it is still cool to customize the album sequence, since it is such a long but consistent album.
Fantastic long-form review. Kept my attention the whole time
I love this man and his reviews he is truly a GOAT
The biggest frustration I've had with the criticisms of this album are how people say the album is too long because of the part 2s. If he would've labeled them deluxe tracks nobody wouldve cared. They are literally deluxe tracks I dont know why people cant wrap their head around the concept of the album ending with No Child Left Behind.
I promptly made my own version of donda after hearing about yours, I had so much fun picking out the specific order for tracks, but ultimately I kept the same tracks you kept but put them in a different order.
Lmao the target extra songs meme made me crack hard. Dope reflection/review/words ruff 🤙🏽
I see the Donda album cover everytime I close my eyes helppppppp
This is it. You have reached a peak I didn’t think was possible. Love your videos. Keep it up.
Lmaoooo omg absolute 10/10 video. I did something similar to this but more strictly focused on the tracklist of the final album we got, so im so happy to see you go through the whole timeline of the Donda experience cause it was something else and deserves that praise
Unforgettable rollout, truly…thanks man!
Just listened to your sequence and loved it. Songs flowed into each other really nicely, quite different from mine but it’s cool listening to the album from someone else’s perspective
This was great man. Writing, editing, and it was so much more dynamic than most “reviews”.
Just when I thought I’d seen it all about Donda. The long review was awesome! Would love to see more of them
I have, for a long time, defended Kanye's musical talents. It's difficult, because I have to start each discussion with "Yes' he is a POS, but he is near unparalleled in in producing music." He is a musical genius. Full stop. I'll add this video to a rotation of others are articles, written by critics, defending his musical talent as well. Because you do such a good job of separating the artist from the art, which is difficult. It's very difficult with a medium like music, where the artist is financially supported (short of pirating the music) when you consume it in any form. Kanye is a complicated man, but he isn't evil. He even recognizes he is problematic in his music (Runaway is 9 minutes of self reflection and criticism). I don't see Drake making even a 2 minute song about the optics of getting friendly with underage girls. Ultimately, I at least encourage people to listen to Kanye before summarily dismissing him based on public faux pas' , and arrogant attitudes, to find the musical talent within, because we are all flawed. You don't have to support someone, but the least you can do is understand them.
I agree, I always tell people you can love and appreciate the music somebody makes but you don't have to like the person.
I'm not a fan of completely dismissing him as a person outside of his art just because he's had some public outbursts and made a fool of himself a few times. It baffles me that people basically come to the consensus that he is one of, if not the greatest artist of all time, he is now a multi billionaire for his impact on the fashion world, he is doing many things for his community and the world, and then to just dismiss him as a lunatic. It doesn't make any sense and feels like a cop out and a way for people to shield themselves from the hate they receive for liking or supporting Kanye.
I don’t disagree with him being a questionable person, but boiling down to him being a POS just doesn’t sit right with me.
Please continue doing these longer videos, this is great
I really like this format it’s my first time getting your channel recommended and was definitely worth watching. Keep It Up
Loved hearing you talk more in depth. This was like 60 videos worth of videos in 1 video.
