I want to talk about Whole Lotta Red

- Take a step back into the not-so-distant past with me for a discussion of Playboi Carti's extremely polarizing Whole Lotta Red. I really enjoy this style of video for a longer discussion of albums or topics that I think deserve it, and I hope you do too. I'd like to continue working on videos like this going forward, so let me know what you think!
Listen to the album: • Playboi Carti - Rockst...
#PlayboiCarti #WholeLottaRed #WLR
the man taught himself to be so concise, I feel like I've absorbed 6 hours worth of information in 10 minutes and 4 seconds
The mans a genius ! He found. The formula !
True the same can be said abt the ten second reviews he manages somehow idk how to sum up the whole album in ten seconds I thought he was trolling but nope coz they’ve recommended his channel a ton of times to me I was like no way bro and I’m glad I made the decision to join along and have fun
Edit : which 👆🏽could’ve been summarised into ten words but I’ll get there 😅😂🤣
INSTANT CLASSIC, LISTENED TO IT ALL CHRISTMAS DAY INSTEAD OF SPENDING TIME WITH MY FAMILY
On god
This but unironically
best day of my life fr, woke up at 5am UK time to listen to it and proceeded to all day
I did both 😂
Bought a Lean Purple Lambo just to get the full experience
Same
what you said about him being "king vamp" is the absolute nuttiest shit I have ever heard in my life, and yet somehow it's too perfect to not have been intentional on his part
No idea if it’s the intent but the art is in our hands now, up to us to interpret!
It's crazy to me that after one and a half year of this album being out this is the first time I'm hearing this
Wonderful vid homie
Hi Brad
Thank you man!
I remember being on the frontlines on that red Christmas Day.
I'm still surprised we survived that day ngl

Not even gonna lie i heard m3tamorphasis and teen x and I thought i seen/heard enough and started callin that shi ass but now its top 3 albums for me
That King Vamp part makes this quite literally the most informative review of Whole Lotta Red I've seen
I've been on the exact some journey. What a fun album
the last person i would expect to comment here, love the wow vids
Lmao I can’t imagine wow players bumbing stop breathing
What a great video. As someone said, your 10 seconds reviews made you so concise that in 10 minutes you articulate extremely well your thoughts and develop interesting ideas. There is no surplus, everything is on point and to the point.
The comparison with the glowstick, that detail on the meaning of "Vamp" and this conclusion on art appreciation and time... 10/10 video.
Appreciate it, thank you so much!
man… i’ve gone on a journey with whole lotta red. when it came out i was so confused and disappointed but as i listened more and more i got addicted to it, and it’s now my most played album ever… i saw carti live back in december and that experience was religious to say the least. anyways, i think wlr is one of my favorite albums ever now and it’s an absolute masterpiece.
EDIT: YOU DID NOT SLANDER TEEN X THAT IS EASILY THE BEST SONG ON THIS ALBUM AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL
good take
nah wish you wouldve seen him before he was better. seen him on tour december and it was dog shit. album was good tho
ME TOO
Give him time. When this album clicked I still hated teen x. Took me like 5 more months for teen x to click.
@@trenhen4311 that was the first song for me lol
Frankly, as much as I enjoy their output, I just don't believe a lot of the key critics/reviewers on youtube have enough time to properly sit with as many lps they say they do; certainly not to develop a meaningful relationship within the timeframe from release to review.. Honestly, I'm 58 years old and spent a lot of time working in music as a younger man, and even to this day there's probably only about 30 lps I listen to on a regular repeat basis. There's lots of records I adored in the moment and grew off me, and lots that left me cold that I came to really enjoy. And I always tell people the tale of how it took me over ten years to fully appreciate Duke Ellington's 'Far East Suite', and how I I hated Warpaint's debut lp when I first heard it, and now it's one of my favourite lps ever.
Cheers from Blighty :)
Love this perspective, thank you for sharing! I struggle with that myself sometimes, it can be impossible to know how you’ll feel about an album years after that first listen 💽
I *ADORE* Warpaint!
Agreed. That’s why I avoid making statements that are “all encompassing” when I make videos talking about music
Depends what mood you are in too
Great comment 👍
As a French, when I listen to US rap I usually don't care about the lyrics. That's why in France we don't have this war about him. I Fell in Luv instantly with his music.
I listen to rap primarily for how it sounds (even with french rap the lyrics comes second for me) and Carti delivers.
Keep up those vids they're really cool !
Are there any artists in french rap who you think has this similar "vibe" like carti's music has, or other french songs you think someone would love if they like carti's music? (asking for music recommendations )
@@vigneshdesmond Hmmm I don't know many french rappers who make Carti like music. The only one who comes to mind is REALO (with the track "C MA SHIT pt.2").
I think all those Carti/Pierre Bourne vibes are heavily american and I didn't stumble across many artist similar to him even when french rap is REALLY taking a lot of things from US rap (but still making different music from america which is awesome).
It's a little different but Serane with his last project "EL(L)E" is fantastic you may like it. Search for the track "GUILLOTINE", if you are into it listen to the album.
@Bryvan Thanks for the recommendations, I listened to both "C ma shit pt.2" and "Guillotine", and both are great tracks! I'm now listening to the entire album of EL(L)E.
@@vigneshdesmond ;)
Bro you are literally me. I used to hate Carti with a passion, but when WLR came out I listened and was confused and really hated it, but months later I was like : let’s put it on while gaming and that listen was better and I got another listen the next day, and by then I was addicted. Then I went and listened to Die Lit and Self Titled and added so many songs to my playlist. It’s crazy
same happened with me i think it's because he's music is unique and unpredictable that's why most people don't get used to it at first
Whole Lotta Red has truly lived in my head rent free since the day it came out. All throughout 2021 I found myself constantly coming back to it more than any other album that dropped that year despite me not even liking 80% of it. I absolutely loved Donda, Call Me If You Get Lost, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert. Yet it was Whole Lotta Red that kept pulling me back in. I think just because of how absurd, avant-garde and polarizing it is that made it such an interesting and alluring project. The fact that I hated it and thought it was trash but still kept listening to it anyway is just a testament to Carti's creativity and staying power as an artist. With how many listens it took for me to actually enjoy it I've definitely been stockholm syndrome'd by this record and I'm not even mad. Whole Lotta Red is such a stupid, bizarre, batshit crazy listening experience and that's always been more interesting to me than one that is great but not as bold and risky. My constant love-hate relationship with this record is what's made it so relevant and memorable to me more than any others this past couple years.
Kinda had the same thoughts of Carti and Die Lit on my first listen; nothing made sense and it wasn't enjoyable. I have to agree about the 'snap', it definitely happened to me because now I find myself coming back to Die Lit repeatedly. Still trying to process WLR though
I love this album so much. I can’t even put into words why I do, but it’s a time piece. “I just hit a lick with a mask MF DOOM” hardest bar of the decade. The production is so raw and unfiltered. Im so happy this exists. Saw him live at this tour and literally cried
Litteraly bouncing around drunk in the street with my buddy. This album makes you feel like a villain in a movie where the bad guy is the main character
Which song is this again, I heard it yesterday💀
@@Pinkystinkypie Stop Breathing
You think that’s the hardest bar of the decade? Holy shit that actually killed some brain cells.
That bar trash asf
WLR is unironically one of the best examples of modern music, encapsulating the energetic, yet vitalizing aura of art and withstand it's legacy for years to come
in other words, i mean it's in the name, it's the biggest W
Nigga it’s satanism lmao
Gunna and Carti has crazy chemistry
These were some great takes! This longer format really suits you, I’m hoping to see more!!
That glow stick analogy was fire
People just can't seem to forget about this album, that just goes to show that it indeed has a special place in people's hearts and minds and people think of it with such importance that they just can't forget about it and they feel like it deserves a discussion either for better or for worse. People know how important this record is and will be, I mean even Fantano did one of the most, if not the fastest Redux Reviews I've seen, he just had to talk about it again. Shawn Cee also did a second on it and then he did another and I've seen a bunch people drastically change their opinions about it. This record will prove to be one of the most artistically impactful records in the history of music to the generations to come because I think the more time passes the more people appreciate this piece of art especially those who've embraced the new Carti vamp rock aesthetic and to those who'll be inspired by it. Whatever people will say, Carti is one of the most unique artists of this generation, put some respect on his name. It's a masterpiece for me and I know I'm not the only one.
it may be worth your time to rewatch both fantano reviews and compare them, it’s pretty enlightening
Look at the date Fantano’s redux review was uploaded…
He's spitting facts 10/10 since release i was shocked to see people HATING it for like 6 months
Bro the redux review is an April fool's joke, he re-tells the same exact words of the first WLR review😂😂😂
@@diegoray8350 don’t tell him, it’s funnier that way 😂😂
The whole "art is forever" thing at the end was awesome. Great video Ruff 🔥
the introduction to carti is exactly how i feel about drain gang, at first its not very palatable and honestly fucking sucks. but then for some reason you keep listening and you understand this world of ethereal bliss where nothing has to make sense. there’s very few artists who can make me feel transported like that and they’re all very hard to get into at first (drain gang, 100 gecs, babymetal, yeat, etc.)
i think one of the most important things about music, and art in general is to try and understand it from the artists perspective. Like what were they trying to accomplish with this record, why did they do the things they did? When I first listened to WLR I did not like it at all, but for some reason I listened to it again and then it clicked. Art does not have to be this complex, multi-layered, multi-faceted piece, sometimes good art is just fun and nonsensical, doesn't make it any less of a piece of art than a Picasso painting. The emotions invoked is the most important thing to consider when engaging with art.
Also, on another note people on social media are so quick to give comments and opinions on things, you saw it for this album, and people even do it for the Kendrick album. Getting upset with the language he used, or mad because it doesn't sound like a past album of his. Don't let the fast paced nature of the music industry swallow you. Really sit with these songs and albums and give em some thought. So many times I hear people call something an "instant classic" or any other form of high praise then in two weeks they've already forgotten about it. It's gonna sound corny but I always think of that line on Pound Cake by Drake "Only real music is gonna last, all that other bullshit is here today and gone tomorrow,"
With all that being said Whole Lotta Red is absolutely a classic album. The influence will become more and more apparent as the years go on.
There's truly something different in his music. When I heard Wlr and Die Lit for the first time, I didn't like it all that much. But there was always something pulling me back to listen to it over and over again, even though I barely found a few tracks which i genuinely liked. Now wlr is my favorite album of literally all time. I have no doubt in about 5-10 years people will be looking back at this album and appreciating it as a classic that changed the music scene.
Talking about year end lists, I outright stopped doing those in favour of "what I found" lists. Releases not bound by time, only by the time I discovered of them.
So I can look back at the year and see my own growth / expanding my horizons, educating myself on great music from years or decades ago.
Instead of just conforming to what is out now.
Music isn't ephemeral, I'll find it eventually.
W take, was considering doing this for the end of the year but def gonna do it now
We need more of this man. You got a lot of charisma. I love your videos!
Honestly pretty incredible how much you managed to convey in under 10 seconds here
it does grows on you and the replay ability is insane, I love this album is so good
I loved WLR the day it came out but I’m a weirdo.
My album that I didn’t care for until one day it clicked was Happier than Ever, I was half-listening and nothing hit. Months later I came across the shorter edit of the title track that’s just the second half, and was shocked because that wasn’t the album I heard! But it was the album I’d heard, I just ran out of patience before then.
The Billie album? I’ve always liked that album but it grew on me to the point where it’s genuinely one of the best pop albums I’ve heard. I see so many people, both online and irl shit on it and it makes me sad :(
This video is amazing bro, youre really great at simply explaining this type of thing, amazing job
Thank you bro 🙏 I could never get on your thumbnail level tho!
I was one of the brave soldiers who loved WLR on my first listens, I’m glad more and more people are coming around to it.
Incredible video. Iv grown up with learning disorders, and even I can say that this video was incredibly cohesive. Half way through the video I had absorbed so much information, good job!
You have convinced me to listen again. Please more long form reviews Mr. Criminal.
The piece toward the end when you talked about cramming everything in for an "end of year" list, that hit pretty hard. I used to be music blogger for a lifestyle website and I can remember compiling my lists of albums in November/December then being ready to post and I would always hear something that made me want to rethink the entire post. You can't make an "end of year" list until it is actual end of the year or start of the new one. As for this album, I think I need to revisit it and give it a fresh perspective, I thought it was pretty good when it dropped but I didn't spend much time with it. Digging this new format.
This is the most polarizing record I've ever listened to. I change my mind every single time I listen to it🤣
Edit: oh hell yeah this album is good af
ill never forgive myself for listening to whole lotta red for the first time. cuz now im a certified VAMP
This album came out while I was in the hospital for something throat related and his raspy inflections on certain songs made me feel uncomfortable because at the time it made my throat feel funny, so I put off listening to it for a few weeks. however now it’s far and away my favorite trap album and I’m glad so many people love it now
This album came out when I was sent to the hospital for an allergic reaction to covid, and I specifically avoided "Stop Breathing" because I was scared I'd actually stop breathing. I came back and now that's one of my fav songs on the album
This is the closest video describing my thoughts about the album, and I didn't like it very much at first... although I always thought Die Lit was a banger.
WLR is just so different and weird that it definitely took me some time to get acquainted to it. Awesome video, glad you threw out a long one for this!
Thank you for reminding this might be my favorite piece of music of all time, unironically
Really like this video. The subject matter and how it's put forth and the meta itself. UA-cam was born for this kind of content. It isn't flashy production wise but it's very genuine.
Good video, make more of these please
Once you begin to love Teen X you will transcend
Love the glow stick analogy. I remember my buddy once described lil b to me as an optical illusion you don’t get at first, but once it clicks you can’t unsee the greatness, that always stuck w me for artists like carti too
Carti Is the most polarizing uhhh “rapper” in new era hip hop. He’s looked at as a deity of rap or the equivalent of a wet trash can with a microphone lol. Absolutely no in between
@@ericaolive Exactly, though it’s understandable how people can’t get into him.

I don't know if wlr is ever gonna be the album for me, but a very nice watch,, very concise with your words, and lovely little personal story
Yes!
For me it was revisiting IGOR, as well as Off The Grid.
I’m one the ones who listened over and over again, looking for why people were hating!

I don’t know if you need it, but you certainly deserve a well and fully produced show. 10 minutes with you is golden. I’d love to hear you talk about more albums and films in this format.
This thing gets better on each listen. I used to like only one song off of it (no sleep) but now it's a top 10 album fom me and I consider it to be a 10/10.
Keep up the long form content! You're quickly becoming one of my favorite music commentators with these vids.
Wow I never made that very literal musical VAMPING connection haha! Very self-aware haha I love it, thanks for pointing that out!

Think you've unlocked a little connection in my thoughts between these 2, and I'm sure more of my favourite artists as the connection grows, that I hadn't considered too much before!

Well said.
Appreciate it! And I’d love to collaborate with you on something in some way, I think that’d be a lot of fun!
TEEN X IS TOP 5 ON THE ALBUM ITS PERFECT
This album is amazing. I was similar to you and only enjoyed a few tracks on my first listen, but I started to notice I enjoyed more and more songs every time I replayed the album. Now, there isn't a single track I don't like which is hardly every the case for me. I think the combination of insane energy (performance and production) and memorable one-liners is what does it for me.
Hit a lick in a mask mf doom👺
For me that whole tour got me those Intro is crazy
Dude your long format videos are killer, keep up the good work!

Great video, love the honest opinion. Gonna use the dialogues in this ok people when I attempt to put them on carti
I love this video. More longies!
I love how nonchalantly funny you are 🤣 Good review
That thing you said about something snapping, like a light switch flicking on... that's how it felt with me and extreme metal and extreme punk. Lol When I first heard Cattle Decapitation, I was like "woah". I'm sure it'll happen for Playboi Carti. I like the beats.
You’re a legend dude I love all your videos and this might be my favorite of yours
I could listen to you speaking about music all day Man
another fantastically concise view of a record. your skill at compacting your thoughts into bite size pieces is unparalleled, while still remaining extremely thoughtful and careful

I don't think I'll ever like Playboi Carti, even his most popular and probably most accessible song too, Magnolia, I hate. That being said, I do really appreciate this video and while I don't share your opinion, you touch on a lot of points that are very true and applicable outside of Carti. So thanks for that!
Magnolia is a banger in my opinion

I went through the same journey with WLR, & it all clicked when I bought a 60 dollar ticket to go see him in concert back in October 2021. I’m a Vamp now.
