I'm always iffy about people from outside of the culture speaking on Hip Hop, especially from artists deeply rooted in the culture because they tend to miss the cultural nuances... but I ALWAYS love your takes. Definitely appreciate this one.
DAMN. is one of my favorite Kendrick albums because I have a very personal experience with it (long story short, my senior project was a jukebox musical based off of DAMN.), and I absolutely adore it’s place in the story of Kendrick Lamar. Give DAMN. another listen now that Mr. Morale is here, and you can see the progression. The struggle with fulfilling his savior complex, his fears about how far he’s fallen and if he’s doomed to get worse, wondering if there’s a path to redemption; the abuse he suffered, domestic and environmental; listening to LOYALTY. and LOVE. after what happens on this album is… wow it really hits different man.
Albums like this and “melt my eyez see your future” are very special. When artists show their vulnerable side it makes them more relatable. Only special artists can pull these albums off at this high of quality. Definitely worth the wait, we’ll be dissecting this record for years to come. Great video!
You make a great point about listeners pressuring artists to continually pump out music even when they aren't ready or just don't want to, and how that pressure is particularly high on critically acclaimed artists like Kendrick, Frank Ocean, etc. What frustrates me is that we've had decades worth of insight from artists (across all genres!) about how destructive that mentality is toward both artists and music itself, and yet that mentality persists :(
I find this album especially interesting because no one ends up with the same list of favorites. Both have a particular intention and style. Both have their highlights and even their own controversies. What's more: When's the last time a conceptual album sparked this sort of political and social discussion? I'm always surprised how deeply art can provoke and engage us.

A theory of mine is that if you take a track in the first disc and find it’s mirror (fe: 3rd track is worldwide steppers and 3rd last track is mr morale so 1/last, 2-2nd last,3-3rd last ,4-15,5/14,6-13 and so on till 9/10)you have the vision of the steppers and then mr morales view on the issue. For example you have N95 which says « all the boys and girls have got some true stories to tell » and mother I sober is Kendrick telling his story. Idk if it’s true or if it checks out but it would make sense. Great video too

To me personally commercial doesn't always mean it's lesser than other songs. Depending on the artist a commercial sounding song can still be crafted beautifully. Kendrick is one of the artist who can make a super commercial sounding song and still make it introspective and something that's uniquely his, which is why DAMN. is my favorite album of his. Kanye is the same way and his commercial sounding songs are still amazing and creative, while people like Drake make commercial sounding songs and it doesn't sound like they're being super creative and doing it for the money instead of their own vision. I love Drake still though.
well I agree with you about the second half being stronger than the first, I actually really love Rich Spirit. but from what I can tell the majority of people I've talked to don't really share that same opinion I guess I can understand why a lot of people wouldn't like it but there's just something about that song I would truly love the vibe is amazing

i like to think the crown of thorns represents a fusion of both mr morale and the idea of a "big stepper", representing him as both his younger and more egotistical/insecure self and as a matured figure who accepts himself and his place in hiphop culture
I'm quite a casual listener so I don't really go too deep to analyze music (my favorite rapper is Future so I don't really have to LMAO) but these longer videos explaining some ideas behind albums are always interesting to me and you manage to make it all feel snappy and not boring so keep it up!
I really appreciate you taking your time before giving full reviews/thoughts on albums, rather than turning a video out the same week as its release. It really gives both you and the audience the chance to absorb the album and give some extra perspective to it as a full work of music. Great vid.

Honestly I think Kendrick using the f slur in auntie diaries was essential for him to bridge the gap between his message and the audience he’s trying to reach, even if it’s not pretty.
pretty solid understanding, but it's interesting to point that kendrick commented on the crown and he said its a reminder to not forget the greatest prophet who walked the earth (interesting how he said prophet as only jewish people see him as a prophet and christians see him as a savior), but he said he wears it so that we can walk in his image. He lived life perfectly, or at least tried through temptation. He was God in the flesh, so that God could experience what we go through in our every day lives and that's it's possible to live a loving and pure life, even though it's hard.
I absolutely enjoyed your approach to this album review. I first listened to this album during a solo hike in nature and was blown away. It is indeed a heavy listen and many people may not go back to it often, or ever again. But like you emphasized, he had a lot to get off his chest and it’ll always be here. When I listened to it, I felt as if it was an album about triumph. Triumph from recognizing one’s own traumas along with those you’ve hurt and those who look up to you for guidance. It’s a lot to deal with. This album ranks as my second favorite K. Dot album behind TPAB. I absolutely am thankful for artists who are willing to be open about their lives. There’s a lot of watered down music and this album is incredible imo. I’m glad the algorithm brought me to your page. Not sure how I’ve never come across your page, but I’m a fan. Salute to you.

And regarding people pressuring Kendrick and other artists to release music, it’s perfectly summed up by my favorite line on the album, from my favorite song on the album: “And they like to wonder where I’ve been / Protecting my soul in the valley of silence.”

Really enjoyed this video. At first I wasn’t really feeling the album but then I started listening to it more and it really grew on me. Like you said, it’s a therapy session, and fittingly enough, the music sounds therapeutic. Don’t really have much else to say beyond that which hasn’t already been said. Props to Kendrick for finally being able to open up about his deeper issues. Also, ngl, DAMN. is my fav Kendrick album because of how commercial it is 😭 I like how much replay value it has. Probably not the first neither the last time im gonna comment this but, you absolutely need to listen to Tako Tsubo(album) by L’imperatrice. Its unreal and absolutely beautiful.
Kendrick also said that he doesn't create this music for anyone besides himself, that it's for him as a therapeutic essence. He said this in the Rick Rubin interview he did. Just wanted to say! :)

Excellent video! Took until a few days ago for me to fully accept and appreciate the album but now I have it on repeat in the car. It's refreshingly honest and human.
After listening to the album and listening to DAMN many times, i feel like DAMN is a kind of renaissance for him as an artistic (because he gets shot at beginning and at the end of the album) so in mr morale & the big steppers he is a more mature artist and person compared to how he was in Section 80, TPAB and GKMC, where he was more like a rapper telling about his past
Mr. Morale & U&U are my two favorite Kendrick projects personally. Both are incredibly underrated. I understand why people love GKMC or TPAB as much as they do, but I wouldn’t really put either in the convo for best rap album ever made. In time, I think it’s possible for Morale to reach that status.
Everything you said in this video was what I thought basically exactly. I think its a bit underrated. Music i can connect with, although I can't relate to a lot of his experiences, are the ones I enjoy the most, and kendrick really puts it all out there on this one. Nice vid.
kendrick using the f slur on auntie diaries really made me think of that dave chappelle bit where his network told him he couldnt use the same word. he asked the network “why can i say n**** but not f*****?” “because you’re not gay mr chapelle” “so because im not a f*****, i can’t say f*****…. well im not a n*****!” i think kendrick finds himself, like most of us, in the middle of the whole “cancel culture thing,” we absolutely dont wanna offend anybody, but its become harder to have honest conversations so we wanna speak out about it. but then we dont speak out about it in fear of being the truly TRULY unbearable bill burrs of the world. kendrick tries to reflect the fact that even in his idolized position, this is just as hard for him to navigate. idk if any of this made sense, great vid mr criminal 2 thumbs up. if i had 3 accounts, itd be 3

I always scratch my head when people say “they don’t like the album” or that “it’s mid or trash” because I honestly feel like Kendrick made this album for everyone. I understand that’s it’s his most personal album, but I believe that he still made music on this album for his core fans & for the average listener to enjoy. I’m excited to see where Kendrick goes next & I feel like he had one of the best album runs of all time on TDE. Pglang up next 💫

comparing this to ye didn't feel as far off as the idea sounds. I would've compared it to tlop well before that, but you're right about just how vulnerable both portray the respective artist. even if I like this a lot more than ye. I was wondering how you'd take the commercial tracks from this. I'm definitely someone who enjoys them, but I also have a deep appreciation for when kendrick goes into different lanes.
In my eyes the crown of thorns is also meant to show that, like Jesus, Kendrick is only human. He may be one of the greatest artists of all time and no doubt has an incredible amount of influence over hip hop and the music idustry as a whole, but he still hurts like everyone else. He still grieves, makes mistakes and is ultimately an incredibly flawed person like the rest of us.
Fair to say that it might be too much to wear the big crown of Rap & deal with a not-so-easy life. Unfair to believe throwing away that crown is the default option.
I love this album, but I think that I might prefer Melt My Eyez See Your Future for Album of the Year just because its much more listenable. Like TPAB suffers from the same issue, but I really fuck with the whole jazz/hip hop sound. And while I do like the sound on this album, songs like Auntie Diaries are the hardest kendrick songs to listen to, and its like that by design. I get the feeling that he wants to make people uncomfortable, to stop "tap dancing around the issue" like you brought up in the video. I cringed every time I heard him drop the f-slur, and I still don't know my feelings about him using it. But by that same token, I really love that he was brave enough to make music like this, and make it sound good as well. Overall, I really like this album, but I think goes to MMESYF since it tackles many similar topics and yet is a great listen all the way through over and over.
I think it's an entirely realistic expectation to assume kendrick will guest star in this video.

Everything you said in this video was what I thought basically exactly. I think its a bit underrated. Music i can connect with, although I can't relate to a lot of his experiences, are the ones I enjoy the most, and kendrick really puts it all out there on this one. Nice vid.

kendrick using the f slur on auntie diaries really made me think of that dave chappelle bit where his network told him he couldnt use the same word. he asked the network

i think kendrick finds himself, like most of us, in the middle of the whole “cancel culture thing,”
we absolutely dont wanna offend anybody, but its become harder to have honest conversations so we wanna speak out about it. but then we dont speak out about it in fear of being the truly TRULY unbearable bill burrs of the world. kendrick tries to reflect the fact that even in his idolized position, this is just as hard for him to navigate. idk if any of this made sense, great vid mr criminal 2 thumbs up. if i had 3 accounts, itd be 3

And I couldn’t agree more. Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers is definitely my album of the year & I also believe it’s a top 3 Kendrick album behind TPAB & GKMC. I always scratch my head when people say “they don’t like the album” or that “it’s mid or trash” because I honestly feel like Kendrick made this album for everyone. I understand that’s it’s his most personal album, but I believe that he still made music on this album for his core fans & for the average listener to enjoy. I’m excited to see where Kendrick goes next & I feel like he had one of the best album runs of all time on TDE. Pglang up next 💫

comparing this to ye didn't feel as far off as the idea sounds. I would've compared it to tlop well before that, but you're right about just how vulnerable both portray the respective artist. even if I like this a lot more than ye. I was wondering how you'd take the commercial tracks from this. I'm definitely someone who enjoys them, but I also have a deep appreciation for when kendrick goes into different lanes.
In my eyes the crown of thorns is also meant to show that, like Jesus, Kendrick is only human. He may be one of the greatest artists of all time and no doubt has an incredible amount of influence over hip hop and the music idustry as a whole, but he still hurts like everyone else. He still grieves, makes mistakes and is ultimately an incredibly flawed person like the rest of us.
Fair to say that it might be too much to wear the big crown of Rap & deal with a not-so-easy life.
Unfair to believe throwing away that crown is the default option.

I love this album, but I think that I might prefer Melt My Eyez See Your Future for Album of the Year just because its much more listenable. Like TPAB suffers from the same issue, but I really fuck with the whole jazz/hip hop sound. And while I do like the sound on this album, songs like Auntie Diaries are the hardest kendrick songs to listen to, and its like that by design. I get the feeling that he wants to make people uncomfortable, to stop "tap dancing around the issue" like you brought up in the video. I cringed every time I heard him drop the f-slur, and I still don't know my feelings about him using it. But by that same token, I really love that he was brave enough to make music like this, and make it sound good as well. Overall, I really like this album, but I think goes to MMESYF since it tackles many similar topics and yet is a great listen all the way through over and over.
