As someone who isn’t into rap as a genre, or even a Kanye fan Not even religious This album had me tearing up and singing and bopping on 90% of the tracks I always heard Kanye was on a different level by fans, I can see why now.
Wut I love ab him man. He’s always gonna work with the new gen. dude flew melly out and made a song w him when he was pippin. He’s always got good intentions he jus has trouble communicating w the ppl.
The album arc is essentially Kanye starting in “jail” then going through a redemptive journey to purify his soul. It has two acts. Act 1 ends with Heaven and Hell. Act 2 starts with Donda. So New Again fits thematically as the follow up to Jesus Lord and the start of the purification. That baptism you mentioned up front. Come to Life is him essentially apologizing to Kim and accepting that he’s now free from his past, his mistakes, his grief, etc etc
“24” actually does reference Kobe apparently - the lyrics “God’s not finished” resembles Kobe when he was being asked why he’s not happy being up 2-0 in the Finals by the press conference reporter “job’s not finished”
To me this album is Kanye sitting back and showing his Mother, "Look Mom, look at all these sounds and artists I can bring together to shine not only for themselves but in the name of you." For an album about his own Mother who passed away, Kanye was his most selfless and let the production and featured artists shine before him. This is truly a moment for the culture.
there’s truth to that, but i also don’t like how he clearly used manson and dababy for publicity (even if they did good on the album, he knew what he was doing).
Donda feels like a museum. Multiple exhibits, different artistic Interpretations of multiple themes, but nonetheless showcasing the strengths of each artist on display. It may not fully feel like a completely Ye album. But that’s not a bad thing.
Don Toliver and The Weeknd had me feeling like that Spongebob meme ngl. I was on my way to Heaven with those tracks. Believe what I say is such a summer vibe man. Loved the album

I just love that Ye made it so long. Not cutting songs short to be radio hits. The songs really create an ambience, like a huge cinematic performance, like it’s really meant for its listen party experience.
I agree, listening from start to finish is a whole experience and it feels like you go through the emotions with him similar to watching a film the same length
There's a total of like 4 unique songs tbh. The rest are mostly just high tier music made in the current zeitgeist and don't deviate from trends. not at all a bad thing but it definitely is over hyped how "unique" it sounds
BillyBob Thorton - nah.. even the filler, most skip able tracks don’t conform to really any trends.. the production and features all show out to the point you wouldn’t find that on most - if any - music that drop today. So can’t really say that they don’t deviate from trends.
This album released right when my grandfather passed away, I tried my best to keep my spirits up for my dad who just lost his father so when I had the chance to listen to it I kinda had it in the background until Jesus Lord came on. It hit me hard hearing that song as it felt like it resonated with me and my situation. I'm going to miss him more than I know but I just felt the need to comment this somewhere. Thanks for reading
Idk if it’s my memory with the listening party but I never heard an album like this ever it’s like how did he come up with these sounds fr. Either way the listening parties were genius and I never seen something like that ever

I agree that sometimes it felt like Kanye didn’t have enough “contribution”. But I think it’s more like this album was an orchestra and Kanye was the conductor, intricately controlling every aspect of the songs, even if his presence isn’t as obvious
I think it’s more of a, “this is Kanye, so I’m about to actually try” feels like a lot of artist today follow a formula and don’t put passion into it. This album just has PASSION. That’s what music today is missing
yeah totally agree....thats why many of the features on a kanye record end up being some of the best performances of the individual artists....working with a man like kanye would be so inspirational
He’s beyond “rapper” “albums” “producer” etc.. the dude is a full blown artist.. this isn’t even a album release.. it’s a whole experience and shit. Real life movie stadium event .. years later everyone will try to do this.
Kanye is simply him, call me meat rider but this man deserves it lol prolly best artist in all time imo, couldn’t live Beatles and queen era my bad this guy is pretty close if not better

Kanye even admitted on an interview that performing and even making music is LOSING him money, he doesn’t care about the numbers, he cares about making actual QUALITY music that moves the game forward. Not more substance that’s indistinguishable from other albums. Cough cough More Life, CLB, Scorpion
This album is like the exact opposite of mbdtf. Mbdtf is about the music, the musicality, the glorious ness of the whole album, the richness of everything. But DONDA, is mainly about the voices. It’s kind of like ambient music. Very rich and dark, mainly focusing on voices. Like every song shines because of the voices, like all the features shine on every track. Every single one. Like it’s insane. This is for sure top 5 kanye for me
Idk about that. MBDTF had way better bars and of course the music was awesome. Donda has like 7 good songs out of 27. It’s okay, not that great. A lot of filler
@King Nova People who don't like Donda really just want an album with a lot of rap. All of the negative comments I've read talk about it not having bars.
This album is a watershed moment for Kanye. There’s so many elements of Kanye post 808’s and Heartbreaks in DONDA and it feels like a recap of his life since his mum passed.
had to do timestamps for this legendary reaction :) 1:43 - Donda Chant 2:18 - Jail 4:33 - God Breathed 6:31 - Off The Grid 9:37 - Hurricane 11:48 - Praise God 14:26 - Jonah 16:20 - Ok Ok 18:07 - Junya 19:17 - Believe What I Say 19:56 - 24 20:39 - Remote Control 21:51 - Moon 23:20 - Heaven & Hell 24:43 - Donda 24:56 - Keep My Spirit Alive 26:33 - Jesus Lord 28:08 - New Again 28:40 - Tell The Vision 29:11 - Lord I Need You 29:33 - Pure Souls 31:11 - Come To Life 32:20 - No Child Left Behind Pt. 2’s skipped
The black album cover and black bag masks and lack of features titled on the album, make me think he wanted us to focus on the music. He promised his mom he'd make an album for her, and IMO there's no way she's not listening to this one in heaven.
The thing that makes me soo emotional about hearing Jay z talk about Donda on jail is just knowing the impact Jay Z had as a male role model and friend in Kanye’s life, also the role he played in mentoring Kanye and his relationship with Donda. And knowing the impact Kanye’s mom had on helping him get his start as an artist. Beautiful 🙌
This album means so much to me, death has really fucked with me ever since my dad died and this is the first thing to really make me sit back and say, “you know what, everything might be fine after all”. Also moon had me crying for obvious reason, and same with come alive.
I cried during ye's verse on Jesus Lord. Simultaneously it's the most impressed I've been by his rapping, ever. "If I talk to Christ, could he send my mother back to life?" and Jay Electronica's verse is fucking HARD. "Earthquakes will strike this nation for what Bush did to Rwanda"
“Lord I need you” hits so hard for me, wish you covered it more as it’s really the only song that deeply talks about his relationship with Kim especially considering how they remarried after the song came out
I know a lot of people hate this album and it probably isn’t for everyone but I legitimately found myself fighting back tears at multiple points on this album. If you’ve ever lost someone with regrets on the table you feel it.
Facts, people have different music taste. Donda and CLB won’t even be comparable music wise. Not bc of whose better or worse. Bc Drake and Ye make entirely different music and to different fanbases. Drake has went more R&B/Rap on most his albums while Ye is just on his unique wave bc he makes his own beat!
@@checksoverstripes2498 I mean me personally I’m a rap fan and I felt like hai features and production carried him on the album but it’s a couple songs on there that’s nice. I wouldn’t play them in my car or while studying for finals but they’re good for his fanbase. I think Ye is wayyy past his prime but even ye post prime is a great artist. Like falling from Mount Everest to Kilimanjaro.

i feel like at the points where kanye lets the features shine is genuinely a decision. he has nothing left to prove rap and music wise. hes just letting the other features have their moment on a kanye album. but you know he not gonna let too many tracks go by without him reminding u how great he can be if he tries
Kanye is the Goat just accept it. Once you get past that it's all pretty simple to understand. Since Kanye is a timeless hip hop figure he features people who are the current sound of the time he drops that way their place in music history is forever marked in the discog of the lineal GOAT. That's a concept that's rather obvious from the actual artists being featured's perspective which is why they all perform like their lives depend on it even if the conception is that they're sub par talent wise.
“Hard to be an angel when you surrounded by demons” could easily be a way of saying it’s hard to be morally pure and live by those values, while living life as an artist of his caliber consumes you with things like fame/money/notoriety

This album is a decade ahead of today’s music, it’s an orchestral symphony with singers, too much talent coming out of Yeezy, his best work to date, errrbody catch up.
@William Humphrey I listen to it twice and I’m in tuned with mostly all the songs, I can’t say the same for his last albums, it’s probably because he has so much guest appearances that contributed out of their respective elements to Kanye West work, it was as if Kanye was the conductor of his own symphony, i feel like this is futuristic positive Chronic 2001, and it’s so crazy that all songs don’t have any derogatory influence, pretty amazing in my opinion.
I felt that the Donda Chant is like repeating a word so many times that you forget what it means, it just becomes a sound. Its basically coping with his mothers name hurting him so much. Beautiful opener for a beautiful album.
YES. im personally not a fan of the 40s clip of the guy talking. it doesnt add much to me but if it wasnt there then that song is easily top 5 kanye songs
Been a fan since Dropout. I'll keep it real, I wasn't expecting much from this album considering the last couple projects, but I am thoroughly enjoying it and was surprised how good it is/was. In my opinion, this is his best project since Yeezus.
I think tlop is better but yea this one surprised me. im embarrassed to admit i thought he was washed and wasnt hyped at all because of jik, but the album is pretty solid, a lot of really good tracks.
@@andrewandrew3218 check genius he was co producing majority of the songs. he works usually the drums and sometimes but the synths and guitar on jail were made by hella producers
Donda is a children’s gospel rap album The beats are unfinished and leave you waiting for the drop that never comes. How you gonna have young thug and pop smoke on a gospel album? No cursing either? Kanye lost his edge.
Kanye doesn’t need to contribute lyrically as much as others when you are over 40, with 20 something Grammys and your hands are on the boards. Greatest producer Producer/Rapper of all time.
I feel like the combination of the album name, spiritual song names, religious references, grief and depression all combine to create a peice which in theory isn’t about himself; simply about his hardships which could relate to everyone else. And the abundance of incredible features, is like Kanye giving back to the community and creating this force of artists to promote his love for Christ. A lot to think about really, which is why I love Kanye’s genius.
Nah definitely not the best rapper but you can call him best artist of all time. Especially nowadays you can almost tell he doesn’t write anymore, its like hes just going in the booth and freestyling it.

I love how Kanye feels like a conductor on this album. my favorite tracks are: Moon, (Don Toliver sounds beautiful on this) Believe What I Say, Heaven and Hell, and Jesus Lord just has one of Ye's best verses ever
Pain - some of the features are astounding like Jay Z and the Weeknd - - but then Kanye would come in and sabotage his own song with his own verse.. or he’d get a mid feature sometimes.. I wouldn’t call it “Ass” but it’s certainly one of the most dynamic projects of the year.
After taking a week and a bit to take Donda in for myself I do believe this album is a classic experience. My favourite songs rn are heaven and hell, God Breathed, off the grid , moon , come to life and jesus lord and Junya
My disappointment not being able to see your full reaction to Jesus Lord was immeasurable. That's definitely my favorite track off of the entire album.
Kanye has me shaking right now, he's in my head, my ears are being blessed. When I go to sleep I hear DONDA, when I eat I hear DONDA, this album has captivated and completely changed my life. Nothing will happen greater than this album so life ends here.
When you say Kanye isn’t contributing, you gotta remember he is behind the keys and the board for almost everything. That’s half of his art and that’s why he’s so special. Not just a rapper, he’s a generational musician. Have to appreciate the beats that Kanye makes come to life
I think he means actually being the best within the song. Like when Roddy came on and the shensea it felt lien their song instead of Kanye. I don’t even think Ye has a top 5 verse on his own album, with that being said, every ft went NUTS. Griselda, Jay, both Baby’s, Roddy, Thugg, Fivi, Carti. I mean they all went crazy, even Shensea had an amazing part. Those songs gravitated towards the features instead of Kanye, but his production definitely made them SHINE HARD
This album is growing on me for sure. At first, I was too hyped for it so of course it didn’t live up to my gargantuan expectations, but I’m starting to really appreciate it for what it is. My only gripe is I wish if he wanted it to be clean, than I wish that he and others didn’t curse and censor themselves cause it sounds a bit off sometimes.
@@checksoverstripes2498 I like Ye, and agree, people are hyping it and reaching hard. I don’t want to listen to it when I get into the car. I’m still listening to KDII, which is so cohesive.

because it’s not a conventional hip hop album i guess, a lot of people will be tuning in expecting just that due to the amount of publicity the album has gotten and then been shocked that it doesn’t just follow the conventional formula. it’s no coincidence that hurricane, off the grid etc seem to be the more popular ones bc they stay closest to the modern formula
I have been wondering too, like are just trolling?...cuz it doesnt feel like too long or boring . i like that they are plenty stuff and music to digest and the production is another level.
As a HUGE kanye fan since the beginning and losing both my parents my mom at 21 and father this year at 33 I can appreciate your abstract and out of box interpretation of this album. This album was a tribute to his mother and his journey within christ. Its art. Its glorious, its emotion and its such a journey. Def subscribing, we vibe HEAVY. Music is more than just sound it is spiritual. Best reviewer I have seen yet. Keep dissecting and diving deeper than the sound. Music has saved my life more than once. Kanye is to me someone who got lost and was buried in the dark but stayed true to who he is and his "weirdness" and learned that his "weirdness" was actually his ability to be different without needing validation. This is why he is a billionaire now. He never gave up and embraced his gifts as a visionary. This mans journey is an absolute triumph for anyone who has been told to "be normal"
@@Lumkilembeje doing great now apart from my youngest daughter battling Leukemia. She is in remission though and I just take each day as a gift thats why we call it the present ;). Little Ye knowledge there aha 🤣
I was listening to the college dropout earlier today. Go back 17 years ago and listen to spaceship, and now in 2021 listen to moon, it speaks to his versatility and how he can cultivate so many different sounds.

This album is a fuckin masterpiece man. Shenseea really did her thing on this album. To see her grow as a dancehall artist and then get TWO features on this album is something else. Her vocals on Pure Souls was just mesmerizing.
When I first heard "Moon" I had the same exact reaction. That song hits too deep and Kanye fucking knew that adding Cudi and Don Toliver would fit like super well
Kanye really is such a good director to these featuring artists. Making them perform their best. Similar to how Kendrick directs the instrumentalists to making them perform their best.

And the choir sung 24 candles 🕯. There were were candles in the shape of 24 at his memorial.
Kanye loved Kobe, Kobe said Kanye was his favorite rapper or sum and Kanye called him "one of my close friends"

That’s exactly what it is
Yep exactly. His vision, just using these tools.
He produced on every track too so even if he has a short or weaker verse, he still maintains that ownership of the sound through that
gotta remember that this is the most he’s actually rapped on an album since College Dropout too !
Yo that's an amazing way to think of it
I think it’s more of a, “this is Kanye, so I’m about to actually try” feels like a lot of artist today follow a formula and don’t put passion into it. This album just has PASSION. That’s what music today is missing

This album is like the exact opposite of mbdtf. Mbdtf is about the music, the musicality, the glorious ness of the whole album, the richness of everything. But DONDA, is mainly about the voices. Hot take: IN MY OPINION, the song was too long, empty, and repetetive.
Jay Elects verse was fire tho
I love how Kanye feels like a conductor on this album. my favorite tracks are: Moon, (Don Toliver sounds beautiful on this) Believe What I Say, Heaven and Hell, and Jesus Lord just has one of Ye's best verses ever

Jesus Lord so annoying tbh 9 minutes the beat gets boring after like 4 minutes

AOTY or not u can’t deny this album has been the craziest drop of the last couple years
Not even close to aoty it’s ass, album had so much hype for it to be this ass
It has
Pain - some of the features are astounding like Jay Z and the Weeknd - - but then Kanye would come in and sabotage his own song with his own verse.. or he’d get a mid feature sometimes..

Heaven and hell is gonna be in future movies

Losing your mother is a pain that you can't get over, you just learn to live with it. Kanye really loved his mom and it shows ♡
My disappointment not being able to see your full reaction to Jesus Lord was immeasurable. That's definitely my favorite track off of the entire album.
Right, that’s my favorite song on there too, especially when he’s describing a broken family, it’s a story
What? He didn't? 🥺
Yo “lord I need you” is definitely the best song on the album
I think moon is my favorite, but Jesus Lord is definitely a top 3 for me

This album is caviar, every song hits different. This is art released out of a time capsule. In my opinion CLB is tuna i feel like i heard it before.
CLB tastes like flat soda
CLB is just another another attempt to being a trendy radio song
clb is great but just not on par with drakes past great albums. still a really good album
Album is trash, let’s be honest. Nothing on the level of Father Stretch My Hands or Runaway

Didn't expect this album to be THAT fire, I never got bored throughout the whole thing, I can't see why people hate it...
because it’s not a conventional hip hop album i guess, a lot of people will be tuning in expecting just that due to the amount of publicity the album has gotten and then been shocked that it doesn’t just follow the conventional formula. it’s no coincidence that hurricane, off the grid etc seem to be the more popular ones bc they stay closest to the modern formula
I have been wondering too, like are just trolling?...cuz it doesnt feel like too long or boring . i like that they are plenty stuff and music to digest and the production is another level.
Because ppl have a different taste in music that isn’t yours or others that liked the album.. simple
I just don’t get it…..
It’s because it’s not average. No banging drums and 808s its more of a melodic and ambient kinda thing
The best comment I’ve read 🙌🏼 and I hope that you’re doing well now
