      Same here. I was always lost in thought and it was brought to my attention many times. I dismissed it as I’m just a deep thinker or an intellectual (arrogant, I know) Meanwhile I’m getting lost in conversations, especially in groups and my life was completely disorganized. Balancing high school and sports is one thing. But college, a job, health (I’m getting older) and a social life is a completely different animal. My life has been so much better since my prescription (3 yrs) and I hope you all share a similar experience :)

      What is this supposed to mean? It's not as if studies can utilise small sample sizes in a way that surveys cannot... Your sample size is going to affect the validity and reliability of your results; it's as simple as that.

    • @Anakianaj
      @Anakianaj 6 років тому +45

      well, usually it's difficult to find participants and/or funding for studies. Studies like these are, as far as I know, meant to give a pointer and something for practising professionals (e.g. those that deal with people taking Adderall for varying reasons) to take into account and document. At some point what these professionals have found might find its way into a different paper that then has more validity. (technically a number of replication studies would be ideal to increase validity and reliability - but no way in hell you find anyone who provides the funding for those replication studies)

    • @azlan194
      @azlan194 6 років тому +190

      32 people is definitely is too small sample size to be anywhere conclusive. Since assuming they divide the group equally, it would be 8 people in each group, this is too small and other affects might come into play like gender, age, physical and emotional well being and their base intelligence in the first place.

    "Adderall is a growing problem" NO. Misuse and abuse of Adderall is a growing problem. This video is contributing to the stigma surrounding a medication that can really help people with ADHD lead more stable, fulfilled lives. If you're going to focus on only the negative effects and abuse, say that. Don't act like this is really a helpful, all-encompassing video about how the drug works as intended.

      It's not all about learning easier most the time, it's about just helping motivate a person to study in the first place. Meth is notorious for having people tweak out and clean their house all day. Adderall is like Meth Ultra Light, you become much more motivated to get stuff done. That's why people take it to study, because otherwise they just wouldn't or would study less.

They all have different effects, hence why they use a mix of salts and not just prescribe straight up amphetamine. Amphetamine itself has a similar molecular structure. The only difference is the Methamphetamine has an extra methyl-group (CH3) which on paper looks insignificant, but in actuality it makes meth SUBSTANTIALLY stronger in terms of its effects the "high" that it produces.

      it's all flawed. being brought through the American school system, it's ingrained in your head that "more is better". More AP's, more extra curricular, more everything. All of it riding on you getting into a good college. Currently, as a junior in highschool, I take 2 AP's, 2 honors, 2 regular classes, school band, I participate in my schools Model UN program which is very time consuming, and I have a job. On any given night my school work will consist of 2-3 hours of work and that's after I get home at 5 on a regular day. With after school activities sometimes I can get home at 7 and work on the weekends leaves me with very little free time. It's incredibly stressful and there's no disputing that. Kids need social lives and free time to be kids! I know kids who are taking 4 AP's as juniors and when I ask why they take them they say "it's what colleges want". No one can tell me that's the right way to think about school

      100% agreed. I'm a chronic pain patient, and people like me are getting hit hard by all these new restrictions and laws on our medications. I'm certain that it's the same for ADHD patients who take Adderall. And I can't help but roll my eyes when people in favor of restrictive laws tell us "you can get your medicine". Doctors are way too scared of the DEA to prescribe certain meds, and they are trained to view everyone with suspicion. We need better addiction resources, not further prohibition for people who get their medication legally.

I always had an inkling that I had ADHD, but I didn't realize it was affecting my life so drastically. If you think you have ADHD and need to try stimulant medication, don't let others make you feel badly about it. You know yourself the most. ADHD is real, and it's also Really hard.

    • @benjaminjohnson6936
      @benjaminjohnson6936 6 років тому +41

      Absolutely. This video even makes it seem like Adderall and meth are equivalent and is super misleading. It also points out the increase in people taking it. An estimated 8% of the population has ADHD, and stimulants like Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse, etc. are the most effective treatment. As more of that 8% gets diagnosed, of course we are going to see the increase in use of these drugs. Even more damning is drawing attention to a study with a very small sample size and ignoring the fact that stimulant medications are among the most studied in pharmacological history, demonstrating that these medications work for those that take them, and are safe if taken as prescribed. Videos like these don't do those who actually need these medications to treat their condition any favors. They just stigmatize the use of the drug (whether use or abuse), and, whether intentional or not, contribute to public perception of these drugs being bad, and making them more difficult to obtain for those who need them to function normally.

      I love this discussion and am fascinated by this conversation. Why shouldn’t nuerotypicals be able to use the stimulant drug to help them write an essay or get things done as they find the medication helpful too? If they want to use it in a controlled way that isn’t hurting themselves or anyone else why can’t they? I mean I understand why not for professional sports, but I’m talking everyday life. If someone without adhd wants to enhance their cognitive performance for their job per say- why should we limit them from doing so?

    edit: i (now 18f) have learned sooooo much about Adderalll and ADHD since i commented this and i am still very correct. Someone with ADHD isn’t comparable to a drug addict in the slightest. We don’t take the medication to get high, we take it so that our brains can function normally. we lack dopamine and serotonin and our brains aren’t properly stimulated like others. the medicine stimulates our brains allowing us to focus and have clarity while also helping with depression, anxiety, RSD, and many many more things that go hand-in-hand with adhd. this video is not only ignorant, but is STILL spreading misinformation and stigmatizing a very real mental illness and struggle for many people.

For someone with ADHD, it can be a live-changing medication that they need to function. There ARE significant improvements in cognitive tests for people with ADHD, but not for people without ADHD.
    They don't make the clear distinction between someone with ADHD taking a therapeutic dose, and someone who is abusing. It only adds to the stigma of people with ADHD taking these medications :(

      Methamphetamine and amphetamine are quite similar. The main difference is that methamphetamine is a lot stronger than amphetamine/dextroamphetamine. However, there is a huuuuge difference between a therapeutic dose to treat a medical condition and recreational usage.

    Thanks for putting out a video that harmfully stereotypes a medication making it more difficult (in a very small measure) for people who need stimulus medication, for their nuero divergences, that much harder to get. Saying it’s meth or “cousins” of meth is like saying a prescribed painkiller is similar to H…. Thanks.

    • @jkerman5113
      @jkerman5113 3 роки тому +5

      The only stereotype comes from your head. Adderall produces similar effects and is chemically similar to Meth, that's just a fact.
      Also ironically, a prescribed painkiller IS similar to Heroin. Both Codeine and Heroin get metabolized into Morphine. The differences between the two are more extensive, but they're both opioids and they both produce effects in similar ways. Not only that, but Heroin is regularly used as a painkiller in some hospitals as "Diamorphine".
      Societally, we learn to think of 'meds' and 'drugs' very differently, even though there's literally no reason to believe this. The truth is, we have many chemicals that affect the brain, and many of them can be used safely if proper measures are taken.

    That was a pretty inconclusive study mentioned, and video in general.
    1. Sample size was way too small (32 people, really?)
    2. The drug was administered to ONLY those who do NOT need it. (Equivalent to someone with 0.5% body fat taking diet pills, then wondering why they didn't lose weight)
    3. Many variables were not mentioned. (Such as; people who actually have ADHD, Age, Gender, length of time administered, release rates, dosage, etc.)
    4. The fact that when some people take Adderall when they are not diagnosed with ADHD, the effects of the stimulant can be the opposite of those expected.
    5. And much more

      @cornheadahh 6 років тому +134

      It's true though. You're only choosing to believe it's a scare tactic because you already have a negative view on meth. The only difference between amphetamine and methamphetamine is a single methyl group. The effects and "high" are almost indistinguishable. Methamphetamine can even be prescribed in rare cases under the brand name Desoxyn. The reason meth sees more abuse is because of the route of administration commonly used. Smoking allows for faster onset and more compulsive redosing while adderall has a smoother/longer onset especially if it's adderall XR.

      and that SINGLE methyl group makes all the difference in the world.. just because a simple chemical change doesn seem drastic doesnt mean it is.. meth is literally like cocaine times a hundred according to the people who take it, while the same amount of adderall doesnt will just make u feel more focused and energetic .. not to mention all the negative side affects of smoking meth , including seeing hallucinations like bugs crawling out of your skin and rots your teeth.

    • @Escrublet

      @@alirocksize the high of meth and adderral is indistinguishable. When you say "a bit more energetic and focused", you mean having your dopamine shot up to a level that is literally multiple times more than naturally possible. And yes if you abused adderral you would get the same psychosis of seeing shit as meth. If you are in denial that they are a similar drug, adderal is the same as street speed, and look at the effects of that. Im not saying adderal is even a bad thing, its just dangerous to give them good and bad labels. Same thing as when people take oxys from the doc thinking its all fine and dandy when its really not much different to heroin. Yet heroin is given such a horrific image.

I am prescribed adderall and I’ve taken it for 2-3 years now.. and yes sometimes I do take it recreationally, never have I ever experienced any form of psychosis or hallucinations, so again ur research does not affect me

      Same here! I have narcolepsy T1. People don't understand that when you have narcolepsy, your brain doesn't know when you should be awake or asleep, and it also doesn't know how to direct wake- and sleep-promoting neurotransmitters at the correct times anymore. So that's your job now 🙃
      Narcolepsy T1 and T1 diabetes actually share some surprising similarities: they're both autoimmune responses caused by genetic and infectious triggers, they both cause extremely low or absent levels of an important hormone (insulin) or neuropeptide (orexin), and they both result in the patient using medications to try and restart those important processes.
      We take stimulants during the day so our bodies can release stimulating neurotransmitters at the correct times. Then we take sleep meds or sodium oxybate to do the opposite.

      Methamphetamine and amphetamine are pharmacologically very similar. So much so that some studies don't even bother distinguishing them. The main difference is that METH tends to be studied in an abuse/recreational use context, and AMPH tends to be studied in a therapeutic context. But when you actually look at studies that compare the two substances on equal footing, there isn't much difference.
      Context is everything with these particular drugs.

      It's not irresponsible, it is watered down meth. I was prescribed it when I was 12 and after only a few months got hooked on it because the ADHD I had wasn't severe yet I was given it. I stock piled it and in high doses it is the exact same thing as meth. I've tried different amphetamines and I have the right to say that it is practically the same thing so don't just say that it's irresponsible or some bullshit like that. BTW I'm a little over a year sober. I deal with my ADHD without a chemical that fucks you up, the problem is over prescription

Not only does it make me study for several long hours and stay incredibly focused and be incredibly efficient, it makes me LOVE studying and love the material I’m studying and I find it so interesting. But hey I know it’s dangerous so I limit it to finals weeks.

      Aspect Science Of course. So Adderall is mixed amphetamine salt, as the video mentioned, in an enantiomeric ratio of 3:1 dextro:levo. Dextroamphetamine has the stronger action at both TAAR1 and VMAT2 of the two, and as such is the stronger central nervous system stimulant. Levoamphetamine is much more peripherally active, leading to a higher incidence of cardiovascular and vasoconstrictive side effects. Serotonin is released by amphetamine, but substantially less so than is dopamine or norepinephrine to the point that it can be considered practically negligible in context of dependence or general effects.
      Methamphetamine is of course the N-methylated "cousin," as the video said, of amphetamine. There is a tendency of videos discussing Adderall for a laymen audience to employ the scare-tactic that amphetamine is “basically meth.” And while that may be correct in the context of molecular structure, even a small change chemically can have functionally major implications in vivo.
      M-amp is much more resistant to metabolism by MAOs and also has a much higher involvement with serotonin than amphetamine does. Its stimulant effect is more potent and lasting, controlling for all other variables.
      Most importantly, it’s apples to oranges when implying the negatives of recreational methamphetamine abuse to a stimulant naive student taking a typically or less than typically prescribed dosage of Adderall. If an individual consumed a 10mg Desoxyn tablet (pharmaceutical d-methamphetamine HCl: a rarely prescribed med indicated for refractory ADHD responsive to ATM and inadequately treated by first-line, esp. presenting with comorbid social/general anxiety disorder(s) and/or dysthymia), it would be very comparable to the effect produced by 20mg of Adderall, but most likely with fewer side-effects, and not anything like the general public perception of “METH,” with that image of an emaciated, scab-picking tweaker with dental damage robbing a 7/11. The key pharmacological difference other than those aforementioned is that methamphetamine is neurotoxic in a dose-dependent matter, but even at a therapeutic dosage its effect on dopamine, serotonin receptors is still considered neurotoxic, whereas the former is all true for amphetamine but opposite in the latter in that amphetamine is not considered neurotoxic at therapeutic dosages. This difference probably has to do with excitotoxicity and greater oxidative stress as a result of methamphetamine's longer duration of action .
      This equating the two is also unfair in that 10-20mg Adderall is equivalent in effect to one or greater orders of magnitude fewer than the typical dose of street meth (racemic and often highly adulterated) used by a meth addict, but most essentially, the RoA is very different between the two. Amphetamine tablets are taken orally the vast majority of the time, whereas recreation meth is typically smoked or injected, significantly changing the effect on the brain as the release of neurotransmitters is so strong and so immediate.
      I hope this cleared some things up, and I’m always glad to help. Know that it wasn’t the video with which I was upset per se, but rather the general tendency of nearly all educational videos aimed at laymen that discuss this topic in a pejorative narrative. Even when the discussion is limited to diverted stimulant medication as study-aids, implicitly equating these medications with the recreational use of street methamphetamine ultimately perpetuates a stigma of individuals with ADHD prescribed these substances as dishonest drug-seekers and tweakers in the eyes of the public and may dissuade someone with the disorder from seeking professional testing and/or help.
      As a final note, the media tends to focus on Adderall as the primary prescription ADHD med. or as the only ADHD Rx med. of an amphetamine type, and that may also make one think that treatment for ADHD is Adderall or bust, but it’s actually a combination of therapy, support, exercise, diet, and medication (when indicated) that highly improve quality of life for the patient. Additionally, there are many ATM besides Adderall for treating ADHD, and they don't all work the same for everyone. Just as Prozac is not a one-size-fits-all SSRI for depression/anxiety, the same is the case for ADHD with respect to Adderall. Strattera (atomoxetine), Provigil (modafinil), Wellbutrin (bupropion), Kapvay (clonidine), and Intuniv (guanfacine) are all non-amphetamine type medication. The active compound in both Vyvanse (lysdexamfetamine dismesylate; prodrug, sustained release) and Dexedrine (dexamfetamine sulfate; active, immediate release) is amphetamine's dextro enantiomer, which is more ideal for reduced peripheral side effects and increased therapeutic effective potency than Adderall typically is. For mixed salt compositions equivalent to Adderall's, options include Adenzys (3:1 d,l-amphetamine liquid base, sublingual, sustained release) and Mydayis (3:1 d,l-amphetamine salts of a single entity; 33% immediate, 67% delayed). Then, of course, there are the methylphetidate medications (all the focus of media and parental concern in the 90s and 00s but has since shifted to Adderall for some reason), for which immediate and sustained release racemic USP formulations exist as Ritalin (d,l-methylphenidate HCl) and Ritalin-SR respectively. Concerta is a popular non-USP SR racemate, as is Daytrana, differing in RoA as a transdermal patch. Then, there is the enantioselective SR preparation Focalin XR (dexmethylphenidate HCl), which is analogous to the therapeutic potency of Dexedrine as compared Adderall IR or, more accurately, to Benzedrine. Lastly, the aforementioned Desoxyn (dextromethamphetamine HCl) is a rarely prescribed and highly scrutinized second-line medication, but it has its place for cases when its benefit would demonstrably outweigh its risk. All this goes to show, is that there's a lot more to this topic than can be surmised in a four minute youtube video where half of its evidence is anecdote or soundbite, and attempting to do so in this manner has potential to arguably be harmful.

      I asked for more information - and man did you deliver! What an interesting read. It's rare you find people put the effort into explaining a topic in detail like you have here, so I can only thank you for it! A couple of things: 1.) "image of an emaciated, scab-picking tweaker with dental damage robbing a 7/11" is a surprisingly poetic way of putting it. Nicely done. 2.) Your final line of how the oversimplified and casual way a lot of people (including myself unfortunately) have drawn the comparison between the two can actually perpetuate a stigma of medical usage of the drug is extremely important and eye-opening, so again thanks for including that. 3.) Just in case you aren't aware, my channel is actually a different one to this (still science-based), and I'm not involved with ASAPScience, although I can understand the confusion, the names are pretty similar haha!

    It's frustrating to see so many people around me using medication like Adderall when they don't actually need it. As someone with ADD I need my medication otherwise simple daily tasks don't get done. It took me years for them to diagnose me since I wasn't hyperactive and was quiet (and very confused) as a kid and teenager. It was hard to get a diagnosis and I ended getting mine so late in life because of everyone faking symptoms to get medication. I've been on Vyvanse for years and have recently noticed a lot of my friends going to the doctor for medication when they don't need it. I hate when people abuse it because it affects my accessibility to it and people never take my diagnosis seriously.

I didnt want to be one of those but I knew there was something off when my grades started to drop in college: not paying attention or not being able to sit and do work for more than 10 minutes isnt great in college, so I got diagnosed by 3 different doctors just to be sure. This video is very misleading in many ways

      Amphetamine doesn't increase the effect of dopamine and serotonin. It increases the release for dopamine and noradrenaline, and to a lesser extent serotonin. (It has a far higher affinity for dopamine and noradrenaline then for serotonin. and it reverses the re-uptake transporters to doesnt even touch the receptors itself) This made it seem like dopamine and serotonin were being "affected" by this drug which is just not the whole picture.
      Amphetamine can increase focus and attention in lower doses, but it is a bell curve and can inhibit them at higher doses.
      he focused on the sympathomimetic effects of noradrenaline and didn't even talk about the role of NA in the CNS and where the main stimulatory effect comes from. shocked there was no mention on the actual sympathomimetic effects like pupil dilation, sweating, and pilli erection etc.
      the single test he quotes is pathetic and isn't very strong statistically. there are heaps of better studies on amphetamine.
      the relation to methamphetamine is EXTREMELY biased. the difference between the two of them is one single carbon atom. Meth is also used for ADHD, its called desoxyn. Methamphetamine and amphetamine are were found indistinguishable between users of meth or speed. These drugs arnt scary they just have abuse potential and the negative stigma they portray is horrible for future drug research.
      the mention to addiction was extremely weak, and only focused on one "form" of addiction. The negative reinforcement aspect of addiction, in that you need to take it to feel normal. (He mentions this without even talking about tolerance too..) What about the fact that it feels good so you take it. What about the moment before they take the drug the "winnie the pooh theory of addiction". what about social isolation theory of addiction (rat park). many highly successful people can use drugs of abuse, on and off without becoming addicted.
      furthermore he focuses specifically on Adderall. Adderall is a mix of amphetamine salts with the L entonimer found to be significantly weaker then the D. Street amphetamine is usualy purley D or a half half mixture of both. Furthemore many other adhd medications include purely the D isomer.
      Further more as far as ADHD medications went there was also no mention to ritalin, whichh works similar to cocaine and is also as equally a drug of abuse.
      where the hell did generation Adderall come from, I have never heard that before.
      finally he makes it seem like the population is abusing adderall like a street drug. remeber adderall is a prescription medication, so doctors are prescribing and people like you are supplying it. Why try to put such a negative impact on the drug itself, when it should be put on the way society treats the drug. Its the dose that makes the poison.

      Nice response. It's true they should have clarified 'release' of neurotransmitters into the synapse not just 'increase.' I was happy that they eventually mentioned norepinephrine and its cardiovascular effects (it seemed like they were going to skip it entirely).
      Thanks for mentioning Desoxyn, although rarely prescribed, it is commercially available, and most of the comments from others don't want to admit how similar Desoxyn and Adderall are, pharmacologically speaking.
      From my experience, I have seen a large increase in stimulant prescriptions over the past 10 years, and lots of people 'losing' their meds, needing it filled 'early', and are on massive doses (70mg Vyvanse am + Adderall 30mg pm, or 120mg-150mg Adderall per day, Concerta 108mg/day, Ritalin 120mg/day), and even kids 5-8 years old starting on Vyvanse 10mg or Concerta 18mg who I assume will be at the massive doses eventually. There seems to be a need to have one's children compete competitively with the other children in the classroom, and a lot of parents put their kids on stimulants solely because their neighbors' kids take them too...keeping up with the Jones'. I hope prescribers are aware an epidemic may be afoot, and to use caution when prescribing.

    Currently not subscribed adderall but have taken it freely. I feel like ADHD is something ive struggled with for a longtime. I am the kind of person to say I’ve never resorted to anything to get stuff done. As I got older and my job/career got more demanding. I started resorting to adderall. It got me far and is getting me far today. It does help ADHD but yeah taking it often I couldn’t imagine. The come down is terrible and you can get hyperfocused

    Stereochemistry makes all the difference . Chemical structures may look similar but the orientation of atoms gives rise to different function .

    That voice and the speed at which he talks made me think that i had used the speed playback feature in the previous video and carried over to this one.

    Umm don't forget people do use the drug who are properly prescribed it. So yes there are a lot of abusers but please don't think so black and white to think this means people with ADD fall in the same catagory. Also yes there are people with ADD who abuse it... But please don't think so black and white that this means all people fall into the same category. Basically don't be simple, cause life is complex.

    While it definitely helps your grades, over time it’ll be the worst shit you’ll ever go through in your life

    Such a disappointment, this video. Insensitive, far too little scientific evidence, and focused on the effect... On people who don't need it? Seems like you just needed to pump out a video that would attract viewers. How disappointing.

    As someone with ADHD who has been on medication for many years, I would like to point out that although it is similar in chemical structure to meth, it is still very different, especially when it comes to dosage. I do understand that the abuse of Adderall and similar ADHD meds is an issue, however I believe you could of handled talking about this problem better, as you and many other nerotypical people covering it, barely touch on people with ADHD using these medications to help them. The problem with this is that treatment for ADHD and other mental disorders, especially medications is stigmatized for unknown reasons, and when people with a large influence like AsapSCIENCE talks about it in this way, it increases the stigma around stimulent medications, which can discourage people who need it to seek out treatment

    I take adderall but I make sure to use it in moderation. Even though I have ADHD. I've learned to funtion at work without it and only use it when I'm off and need to focus on getting stuff done. If I'm just hanging out, I never take it. What this did is allow me to funtion way more effectively than I was before without making me rely on it. On average I probably only take 1-2 doses a week. Usually on my off days to focus on getting important stuff done

      Thank you for sharing. I’m making an appt tomorrow or Monday for a diagnosis. I’m almost 40, really need to get this taken care of. How would you describe how it feels to be on Vyvanse and the benefits you get from it? Do the non stimulant days feel different than they did before you were diagnosed and taking the Vyvanse? Also, do you or have you done any cognitive behavioral therapy or any other interventions?
