Marathas ruled Thanjavur and Gingee (Which was made capital of Maratha Empire for a few years during Maratha Mughal wars. They never managed to conquer all of Tamil Nadu. No Northern Indian power ever managed this feat only the Southern Vijaynagar (though they never managed to conquer the Tamil Kingdoms in Northern Sri Lanka) and the British managed it

Founder of Maratha empire Chhatrapati Shivaji created hindavi swaraj, self-ruled Indian empire in a small enclave.
But later Marathas created Maratha empire in half of India many times larger, stronger, and wealthier.
And later marathas went even further and made their own house states. Downfall was must. They defeated the very purpose of Shivaji's foundation of state.

They might have been more powerful if they had stayed united
They would have, the problem is after Shivaji's line was exhausted and the Maratha civil war broke out, such unity would have been impossible. Aurangzeb's scheme worked at the end and he did cripple the Maratha Empire and turned it into an entity it was not originally. The Marathas could have been a very different creature if Sambhaji hadn't lost.

@@binujoy6109 Well considering that they laid waste to the Mughal Empire despite the horrible odds from which they started out, and fought and defeated nearly every Indian power, and challenged the most established European powers, yet get mostly completely from the text books in the West and in india (outside of Maharashtra) . I'd say they are VERY underrated.

@Arid The map specifically shows tributary states, protectorates and puppet states/influence. How is it 'misleading' ? Marathas didn't bother taking over territories outside of their core , rather they settled with taking tributes from states they raided or extended influence over. So yes, they were an Indian power which influenced all of the sub-continent, but they did not 'take over' as in extended their territorial hold over those places. The aspect of extracting tribute is important as is the scale at which they operated, to hit home how much influence they really had, contrasted with how much history actually covers them (which isn't a whole lot outside of marathi textbooks) . Additionally, the plunder extracted by the Marathas indirectly set the stage for the British to take over from bankrupted and weakened Indian states in the South and North. Rajputana directly went under British protection from Maratha influence, solely to be rid of their exploitative hegemony.

@@sharadowasdr The Maratha empire at its peak in 1758 stretched from Khyber Pass, Peshawar in the north to Tanjavur in the south and Bengal Subah (upto Hoogly river) in the east. An area of 2.8 million kms. So yes, they did control a major party of the subcontinent.

Chhatrpati Shahu was not a nominal ruler.
He was an effective ruler.
The peshwas gained direct control and made Chhatrpati position nominal in 1750, after the death of Chhatrpati Shahu.

From what I can tell, it wouldn't have made much difference. The Afghan losses were so heavy in that battle that they were essentially locked out of India after 1761 anyway, which allowed the Marathas to return to Delhi shortly after.

The boundary between the Marathas and the state of Oudh after the battle of Panipat was Yamuna, not the present day Madhya Pradesh boundary. Also the Marathas captured whole of Punjab from the the Durranis, while you showed only a part of it, while actually they conquered all of the land from Sindh to Peshawar. From 1785 to the end of the First Anglo-Maratha War in 1805,for almost 20 years Marathas ruled till Satluj river, while you showed their rule till present-day Haryana-Punjab Border.

From 1752 to 1762, Marathas collected Chauth or tributes from Sindh, and was administered by 10,000 marathas. Maratha power was decimated in the entire region after the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761. In 1762, Mian Ghulam Shah Kalhoro brought stability in Sindh, he reorganized and killed all the Marathas and their prominent vassal the Rao of Kuch in the Thar Desert. However the Marathas briefly again invaded Sindh in 1772.

After *1* *year* ,not 3 years,
in 1759, Abdali retook multan, attock & peshawar but failed to gain only lahore because combine maratha & sikh defended lahore.
In 1760 Abdali also gain lahore and then, in Jan-1761, won battle of panipat.

1584 o 1700 - Picture shown here is totally wrong. Territory does not just come out of nowhere. In last days, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj campaigned in Southern direction and every little kingdom including Kutubshah accepted his rule. It was contiguous empire from Pune to Ginjee which is not shown here. Biggest achievement and basis on which Maratha Empire stood is not covered here. Gingjee saved Rajaram, where he refuged during Aurangjeb's Deccan Campaign. Shahu was not Titular ruler, only hi successors can be called Titular. Rani Tarabai's mention is missing, after Rajaram she was leading Maratha effort.

Oh it wasn't sudden. From the time of chhatrapati shivaji mahraj, the danish, portuguese, french, english etc were trying to make inroads for trade and the western coast was safeguarded from extreme colonialisation due to the marathas. If only bengal had a visionary ruler and not some stupid nabob, history would have been different.
