      Yes...and no. Aesthetically...I frankly find Yoshihiro Togashi to be lacking. Many of the designs are not even functional for what they're trying to be. Storywise however...yep. There's just more character overall.

    I actually liked the Dark Tournament Arc because there was plausible reason and character motivation for it. It developed Characters, both Heroes and Villains, and gave side characters a chance to truely shine. Better than any other Tournament Arc I've seen in anime.

    • @arthas640
      @arthas640 6 років тому +3

      Some Tournament arcs are good, but the majority do feel like the writers just slapped "insert filler here" during the rough draft phase and couldnt be bothered to actually fill it with anything. A few series I've seen have literally stuck in a tournament arc when the manga wasnt finished or they were rushed and needed to by themselves some time or to stretch a season out.
      Some martial arts series actually do a good job of it since its A: justified in series and B: they actually use it to tell a story/add character development

      Sean Maguire I’d say HxH’s tournament arc was better paced but then again when both YYH and HxH are made by the same creator and are the the best examples of tournament arcs that shounen has to offer then we can safely say that he knows what he’s doing~

    Personally, I found the tournament in YYH to actually be well done.
    It got old having DBZ always have a tournament and then it never get resolved because of some plot thing.
    Cell is throwing a tournament! Oh wait, he destroyed the ring and doesn't care about a tournament.
    World Tournament? Nah, Boo is being awakened.
    World Tournament in the movie Fusion Reborn? Nah, plot.
    At least YYH actually made a tournament and finished it.

      The original Dragon Ball had three tournament arcs that were all great and all ended normally. Of course it made allot more sense back then since Goku wasn't defending the world he was just a trying to improve as a martial artist and fight strong opponents.

      I've never managed to see DB all the way through, half on account of Toonami never airing it and anime companies not forcing it like they did with DBZ and half on account I haven't had the time/money to sit and buy/watch all five seasons. I'm hoping to get to it eventually because I feel like I may enjoy it more than Z.

      while i see where you are coming from, i dont agree, but its been quite a while since i watched that part of the series, so i cant really make a good rebuttal. So ill give this one to you... but only this once. Although i do think the tournament in the boo arc was resolved, if i remember correctly Mr. Satan won, because he paid 18 to throw the tournament, or at least that was what was supposed to happen, i could be wrong. It may not have happened because of the whole vegeta becoming evil again.

      Jo Smo It's because the people who adapted this movie went with a very direct transliteration of the Kanji that make up his surname. Not TECHNICALLY wholly incorrect, but still a bit wonky.
      This little snafu has nothing to do with the people actually doing the dubbing, so it's not fair to pin it all on them. It's not like this was a particularly rare thing to encounter in English dubs of yore.

    • @TheTubePoweredOne
      @TheTubePoweredOne 5 років тому +4

      Chris Conley Toei (and, indeed, practically every one of Toriyama's editors and/or Shueisha) were the real culprits to blame for the supporting cast to be turned into nothing more than glorified background characters for the series they assure you is ACTUALLY called "Son Goku's Variety Show + Vegetables, We Guess".
      That's why Toriyama had his arm twisted into completely kneecapping his own story by bending over backwards to completely undo the major point of the Cell Games and regress Gohan's character from Earth's New Protector to Goku's Older Son. Goku wasn't meant to come back because it was GOHAN'S time to shine. It's quite literally what the whole of Z was so painfully, obviously building towards: Gohan finally gets full access to his untapped power by overcoming his rage and surpassing his father.
      It's instances like this that makes it easy to villainize the editorial staff of manga publications, but I'd be remiss to not also mention that one of Toriyama's editors is the sole reason why Androids 19 and 20 weren't the big bads of that whole saga as opposed to Cell. His comments managed to get Toriyama to add in 17 and 18, then Imperfect Cell, then SP Cell, and finally Perfect Cell. So there's some good, at least.
      ...Unless you, like, REALLY loved the fat mime-bot, in which case more power to ya.

    It always bugged when Sage says the tournament arc is always the worst part of a shonen series. Let's look at some tournament arcs.
    Dragon Ball, Hunter x Hunter and Kinnikuman's tournament arcs are officially the point were all three series got awesome.
    The tournament arc in Reborn is the only good arc in that series. Naruto's tournament arc is the only part of the series that is generally held in high regard.
    Shaman King is considered excellent and the entire series is one big tournament arc
    Not to say that there aren't bad tournament arcs (because there are) but the idea that they are always the worst arcs is clearly nonsense.

      interestingly enough, you pointing this out exposes a glaring error on both the translators' and producers' part: they never bothered to watch the series, or at least the movie, in any way, shape, or form.
      this mistranslation would pass if this was an American adaptation of a manga. this was obviously not the case though.
      it's a pretty lazy move on behalf of this company, and I kinda wish Bennet would have pointed this out. he has talked about something like this before.
      I realize the task of translating this movie would have been difficult for the company, but considering the popularity of Yu Yu Hakusho, laziness shouldn't have been allowed. I wonder if these guys still have something resembling a business?
      TLDR:

    But there's just one thing I hate.. When a show starts off with a rather entertaining premise but then it devolves into endless fighting and/or needlessly convoluted plots. Like Bleach and Hitman Reborn are prime examples. I started to read both and I absolutely loved the direction they had them going in, but then boom, all the charm and fun is sucked out.

      Not to mention the thing that bothers me the most with shounen animes - the writer ALWAYS forcefully gives EVERYONE a love interest sooner or later they end up together with... and of course, it's ALWAYS heterosexual couples ONLY. Because god forbid a gay character (particularly male gay protagonists) would get to find someone to end up together with of the same gender... apparently.

    And now, some of my favorite lines from when Lanipator abridged this movie:
    Kurama: "Have you ever watched the dub of an anime and then watched a completely different dub and felt it didn't sound right? Well, that's the effect the Nether World will have on us."
    Yusuke: (Sounding old) "Man, if that's what you guys sound like what the hell does Kurama sound like?"
    Kuwabara: (Sounding like Dr. Weird): "You don't want to know!"
    Kurama: (Sounding like Stitch) "I hate all of you."

    I usually like tournament arcs. For once, we have someone to root for, but we don't know if he will actually win. Also we can see a power comparison between characters who would normally not fight against each other. The first two tournament arcs of the original Dragonball where excellent.
    I just hate aborted tournament arcs.

    • @NeoShadowWolf
      @NeoShadowWolf 9 років тому +3

      Shounen is also not typically written to be good stories. It was written to sell lots of merchandise, so you'll often see huge character casts, colorful character designs, magic systems (or similar), and needless filler to stretch out the series and delay the main plot so that the company can continuously milk the cash cow. While shounen can have depth and complexity to it, it is also often put into simple words and simple subplots so that the target audience can understand it without trouble.
      So artists like Hayao Miyazaki and Tite Kubo are on completely different planes from one another. Miyazaki aims to make high quality art. Kubo aims to make more moolah.
      Some people like to see an expansive world that grows endlessly. Some just want a good story. It's very difficult to obtain both.

      @Brendan Milburn It was long but efficient. Most matches last from half an episode to three at most (except for the final one). It's generally regarded as YYH's best arc, significantly developing each character along the way. The one arc that drags a bit is the Chapter Black saga during the fight w/ Sensui in the cave. While the Three Kings saga was rushed halfway through by the author's own admission.

    I'm not going to act like Shonen anime is worth heavy praise, if anything it kinda kneecaps the possibillity for other shows to get some attention in the west. But to give some credit where it's due, without them the Anime scene wouldn't be nearly as popular or even that well recognized in western media. Of all anime I've seen, Shonen is low on my tier list for personal favorites, except one: FullMetal Alchemist. Specifically the Brotherhood remake. That series, despite being classified as Shonen, is much begter in terms of quality. No elongated arcs of filler and needless plot deversions, superb voice acting, and the common tropes of the genre are minimal and don't detract from the overall story. Out of all the Shonen anime, FMA: Brotherhood is definately the best.

    I'm going to have to disagree on a couple things. Mainly concerning some comparisons to dbz. Firstly, I think "never escaped dbz's shadow" is a matter of opinion, as some, myself included, hold this show in Much higher regard then dbz. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy dbz, just to a lesser extent. I just don't get as invested in the stories, and think there's too much fluff. That's not to say yu yu isn't guilty of having fluff, it's just to a lesser extent, and the series in general isn't Nearly as bloated as dbz, what with their nearly 300 episodes.
    Also comparing Genkai with King Kai, is pretty harsh on Genkai. King Kai becomes irrelevant pretty early on in the series, except for as a makeshift telecommunication device, and that one time goku blew up cell there. Hell even That is a testament to King Kai's uselessness, more or less implying that King Kai's place was the only place of no real consequence he could think of to bring cell, and then they all die (except cell of course). Hell when Genkai dies, there's actual Weight to it, people are heart broken, and mournful, how many people Other then goku, in the main cast, even Realized King Kai was dead? Of course, then they pull the bs dues ex wishia, and make everything better, which I thought was bullshit, but at the end of the series they imply that Genkai is more then willing to let herself pass on, and makes plans for the crew to take care of her property, and all that pass through looking for sanctuary.
    What did King Kai do, aside from teach goku a couple of moves that become all but irrelevant almost immediately in following story arcs? Seriously, I'm having trouble remembering.
    ALL THAT being said, I really, Really didn't like this movie. I saw it before I was even Aware of the series though, and it's a Very poor way to get introduced to the series, for obvious reasons. Shit, as soon as they brought up those magic japanese elemental sights, I was having fucking Tenchi Muyo In Love flashbacks...
    In closing, I'm not trying to stir up any shit, honestly, just trying to point out the subjective nature of audience feedback. One type of audience member may lean more towards dbz, one may lean more towards yu yu, it all really depends on the individual. For me, personally, I connected more with yu yu, which made Bleach really disappointing for me, as there were more then a few familiar elements. Anywho, I know this is late, since this episode is almost a full year old, but keep up the good work!

      Red Cloud Dude, you do realize when he said, "never escaped dbz's shadow," he meant the shadow of popularity, not quality, right? General audiences just cared more about DBZ even if Yu Yu Hakasho was better. And that is not a matter of opinion, just general observation.

    Of course a Man of Steel joke, because those jokes haven't gotten old since the five thousandth time someone made it. Superman didn't cause the building to fall, Zod did with his heat vision, physics made the building fall that way, as for the other building he flew into again that was physics doing the work. I love how people think: "This guy has been a superhero for about 24 hours now so he should be perfect at it by now even when he's thrust into a situation that he didn't expect would happen." Good review though Bennett, I laughed a crap ton. The OH MY GOD WE'RE DOOMED part almost made me have a heart attack from laughing. Spirit Gun? Really? Gee that isn't in anyway similar to the second most iconic move from Dragon Ball Z is it?

      ***** In all honesty the fight between Superman and Zod was tame compared to that of Superman vs Captain Marvel or Darkseid.
