    I worked for a Honda dealership from 2002-2008. I replaced several of these hvac/head units I'm the Accords. The first iteration of the service bulletin had us replacing the entire unit. Later versions had instructions that specified a component failure (think it was a capacitor) on a board. The revised bulletin required you to use a static mat and replace just the problem circuit board within the radio.

    Ivan, the radio and HVAC illumination problem may be a bad surface mount resistor on one of the radio boards labeled R797 , according to a UA-cam video titled "2003 Honda Accord Radio Repair - Part 2". You may want to skip the Part 1 video because it only shows how to remove the radio from the dash, which you already know how to do. The actual repair starts about 10 minutes into Part 2.

  • @100SteveB

    Crazy how they complicate something so simply like a lighting circuit. Mad. Yep, stick with the old Mystique! But, tip for you Ivan, if the lighting circuit is similar on your Mystique to my 1997 Mondeo, take note if your dash lights go out - on my Mondeo that is normally down to just dirty contacts in the dimmer switch. But, my Mondeo does have another trick up it's sleeve that can catch you out. If your dash lights go out - don't assume it's just the dimmer switch playing up again - get out of the car and go and check to see if your rear tail lights are working, along with the front side lights. On the European Mondeo the dash lights and the tail lights and front side lights all get there feed from one wire going into the main light switch on the dash. Ford in the EU seem to have got their sums wrong when it came to just how much current the contacts in the connector on the back of the light switch could handle. I have come across a few Mondeo's where one of the main feed connectors on the back of the light switch get hot during use, eventually melting the plastic around that connector causing the connector to not make contact properly.
    Ends up with the dash lights not working, along with the rear tail lights and front side lights. Headlights still work fine. So if your dash lights go out on a Mondeo - don't assume it's just the dash lights! Like i say, don't know if the Mystique can suffer from the same - but keep it in mind just in case. Keep up the good work Ivan, always find your videos very interesting.

    Honda is learning from Gm and Ford & Chrysler...none repairable, intergrade it all together so when it breaks after warranty, it’s payday for the dealer and the manufacturer. Stupid! But that’s the way this one is. And when they get old enough, they all have the same problem so a used radio isn’t even an option. (They all hope you trade every 3 or so years anyway) Great video as always my friend!

      @midwestfarm757 5 років тому

      We have three of them. 175,000 miles, 205,000 miles, and 280,000 miles. Don't have these problems. Maybe calling it a horrible design is premature?

    • @CubasAutomotive
      @CubasAutomotive 5 років тому

      @@midwestfarm757 you may be lucky. Maybe the location... temps or humidity making a difference. But I will stick to my original comment. To have 1 integrated unit that joins at least 2 different systems (radio & HVAC) is a poor design, that if 1 area has a failure, the entire unit must be replaced. Also mentioned, no possibility of installing an aftermarket head unit either? I'm not 100% sure there, but that would be nonsense as well! Being a customer (or this model's owner), I would be furious if I couldn't replace JUST the radio at a later date. Just an example. Yes. Poor design.

    • @opl500
      @opl500 5 років тому

      Early 00s is when Honda build quality started going downhill. Honda like Nissan, ain't what they used to be. Still good, just nowhere near as good as they were in the 90s.

    • @midwestfarm757
      @midwestfarm757 5 років тому

      @@opl500 In the Midwest, the quality has gotten a lot better in the body not rusting out, suspension parts that last much longer than before, and with engines like the 2.4 liter they managed to make an engine with a timing chain. With proper maintenance those 2.4 motors are running around with 300-400,000 miles if not more. Believe me, I have owned many 90, 00's Hondas and the new ones aren't rusty like they used to be, and reliability for my Accords and CRV have been awesome.

    The main reason those die is high power LEDs people stick into those thinking it is a cool mod. It fries the central unit in about a week and they are stuck with both HVAC control and the dash lights dead. The easiest fix usually is to replace the HVAC control with a used one, expect around $100+ for the part

  • @calebmohler3082

    Hey Ivan actually the integrated Radio display , controls an HVAC controls is now standard on pretty much every vehicle. Jus did 2013 Cadillac SRX radio display touchscreen not responding to touch. No codes. It was $1100 just for the integrated screen, radio controls an HVAC controls unit. Also a 2015 Tahoe the other day just the CD/DVD Player was bad. $850 just for it . That doesn't include the separate radio, radio display/controls unit, the Bluetooth module, the onstar module, the rear seat entertainment module, the amplifier an the list goes on. Yep you can easy have $2000 in one repair on a newer vehicle.

    You may as well start getting used to it.... The newer luxury cars all have this epic head unit in them, that literally everything runs through.... You need the touch screen to do your heated seats, heated steering wheel, climate control, full audio suite, nav, all of it....
    So when that dies..... You're outta business....

    I have replaced a ton of those boards on Acura TSX's, they had a warranty extension on them a while back. Terrible design. I bet you could take the board off and fix it. They added an extra heat sink mat on the new updated boards

    So many failed bulbs and an electronic issue, maybe the alternator or the voltage regulator are not operating properly?

    These were a problem back then ... the dealer would replace the entire unit and give you a new radio code .

    A customer was really pissed that in order to get his HVAC control to work he had to buy a whole new navigation radio at $2000. And he never used the navigation nor did he play any CDs.

    Yep. I work at audio shop. There is a kit for aftermarket radios for this design. Whole dash minus radio while keeping the HVAC intact.

    I would find a radio on sale at Crutchfield and get them to throw in all the connectors needed, or maybe best buy . Some high school kid should be upgrading their music and get their old unit, the code is inside the fuse cover under the hood.

    All those lights popped must had to do with a big voltage spike. Maybe somebody jumped the car and blew up the regulator on the cd passthru. VW had this problem. It was on the back of the dash.

    I'm supprised at honda, silly to tie the radio up with hvac :-(
    My bodgy brain says a Tip41a npn transistor with it's collector to +13.8 and it's base fed from the junction of two resistors, 1k8 to ground and a 1K to the dimmer wire, emitter to bulbs.
    Sorry bodgy mind at play :-D

    when you put 12 volts to that circuit board i cringed. a lot of those radios have 9 volt bulbs. some are actually diodes that that look like bulbs. did this have an alternator in its history? lots of times a faulty regulator will cause that many bulbs to go out due to over voltage. perhaps it damaged the radio too.

      Recall that the illumination contacts on those connectors on the green circuit board were marked 8 volts out to the lamps.

    Clearly you have not diagnosed instrument illumination for a 2002 and up ford thunderbird. Radio and havac normal type system your speaking of. Instrments and shift indicator are controlled from FEM Front Electronics Module. They are not cheap and control almost everything in the vehicle.
