Back in 1986, I had the opportunity to roadie for David's band, El Rayo X. I was already a huge fan. And after a few months on the road I was in awe! Night after night, Mr Dave, Jorge, Bernie (later Ray), Smitty, and Walfredo blew away audiences with their unique chunky style. I absolutely loved every single show!! I also really enjoyed this time with David. He was musical royalty, but he was also a sweet guy who made this young insecure musician feel right at home. I will miss you, David, and will always wish I could've seen just one more show.

@@danielosullivan3110 , Yeah I chatted with Paul Irwin, aka "Santa Claws", at a couple of gigs and corresponded with him a little bit when buying T-shirt's. (If you watch the performance of Quarter of a Man from the Reggae on the River concert, which you can find on UA-cam, you'll aee Paul Irwin standing behind Lindley on stage). I was a subscriber to Lindley's newsletter in the pre-internet age! I just ordered a couple T-shirts and left a donation for David's family through the fundraiser set up by promoter Douglas Reynolds on the Custom Ink website.
I saw that tour in Nashville. A peak musical experience, to be sure! It must have been amazing to witness it night after night.

Hats off to Henry for this most generous, thoughtful, witty and accurate testimony to the peerless Mr Dave. He enriched my life from the days of Kaleidoscope and subsequent side trips with Terry Reid, Jackson Browne, El Rayo-X, Henry, Ry Cooder and his endless collaborations down the years. "Session-man" etc never did him justice. I met him once and interviewed him a little later and he was a musical encyclopaedia and an engaging, funny subject. His musical spirit
will be undiluted by the years.
A huge loss. One of the finest musicians of our time. And that voice! I never knew whether to laugh, cry or just enjoy. But I loved him anyway. 😘
This is I think the richest tribute anyone could give to David Lindley. It went deeper into the music and the person than I have really experienced so far. I had listened to all those albums but the last one. I had thought that David Lindley had been on only a few records in my collection including his solo album and some Jackson Brown albums but here I find he's in the deep end. I should have known. Or maybe I did and am just getting too old to remember. At any rate, Thanks Henry, for this clearly loving tribute.

David's lap steel is like a warm summer embrace, a childhood memory such an amazing lyrical voice and that was just one of the many contributions he made to music...
This morning on the way to school my ten-year-old daughter asked me if I knew that David Lindley had died I said yes course and she said what did he do I didn't know how to describe David's vast Talent so I just cued up Running on empty and said he's not the guy singing he's the guy playing that really high beautiful guitar she listened all the way through without saying a word and at the end she said wow he was really good huh I said yes honey he really was
I had the incredible luck to have David Lindley as my guitar and banjo teacher in Pasadena in the mid 60's. He had short hair then! He was always nice and patient. He found me a guitar and a banjo (which he reworked for me). I still have those instruments and still play them today. He had unimaginable talent that was so evident sitting across from him and watch him play. He is in polyester heaven now! RIP

I believe it was El Rayo X...UCSC Staff Appreciation Day..up top, outdoors on a stage set up on the field overlooking Monterey Bay, maybe summer. Just UCSC staff and some friends. I was a lucky staff member and a longtime fan. They checked us at the campus entrance. Some food, drinks and a flea market, some selling clothes. The band started playing their usual amazing tunes, the fog rolled in, the wind picked up and it got really chilly; those flea market guys sold every sweater, jacket and shirt real quick and we all had the best time. I wish I had a video. Mid way in the show they were cookin' and a gust of wind blew a towel off the top of a speaker and it wrapped around David's face while he was singing....he didn't miss a beat, finished the song with the towel flapping in the wind. The place went nuts. Thanks, Dave!

Thanks Henry for this well-stated and heartfelt tribute to David Lindley. He was a true original. He was an "idea" man who also had supreme technique, and that's kind of rare. El Rayo X was one of the best bands ever. People will enjoy his music for many years to come, so in a way, Lindley is immortal.
The shirt is a nice touch! There couldn't be a better tribute to a musician of this caliber than to show us these sides of his playing that we've never seen - thanks for that.

So very sorry for the loss of your dear friend, Henry - and thank you so much for sharing this treasure. Lots of folks missing this guy, and this sure helps us remember his genius as if we needed reminding!
The first time I became aware of David Lindley was seeing him with Jackson Browne during the Running on Empty tour. They played in a relatively small venue in Columbus, Ohio, I think it was called Zachariah's at that time. David played guitar, slide guitar, and fiddle. It was very evident that Jackson Browne was "just the singer" and David Lindley was the band leader. When he sang his little falsetto bit in Stay, he just about brought down the house. That show was one of my fondest memories in hundreds of concerts in my life. I didn't know his name at that time, but years later, I remembered him when I discovered the first El Rayo X album. Most people who are taking the time to watch this video probably know that David Lindley was an important session man at Asylum Records, supporting such artists As Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, and Linda Rondstadt. David was less well known, but in a class of "musicians' musicians" like Ry Cooder, people who can only be truly appreciated by fairly accomplished musicians, and in terms of American Roots music - but he was also a world music, world class musicologist. He was one of those guys for whom stardom would have been an inconvenience - he had more important things to do than be a celebrity. And his sense of humor... Goodness...

@@xray7908 I was at his home once in the early 1980s and was taken aback, when nature called, to find a framed Gold Record Award for the album Late For The Sky hanging right above the commode. That was a memorable moment indeed.

Dammit, Henry, you made me cry, for the umpteenth time since I heard about Dave's passing. Tears of sadness mixed with tears of joy that I got to hear, appreciate and enjoy David's playing for nearly 50 years, both on record and in concert. Thank you for this tribute. By the way, the World Out of Time series is a favorite of mine, and my wife and I used "Izahy Si Malala" as part of our wedding ceremony! In closing, all I can say is Lassez le Bon Temps Roulez; Let the good times roll!
I had just heard about his passing this morning and, this is truly a great loss to this World ! About twenty years ago, I had sent David a message about Mandolin Pick Ups. He sent me a very quick reply and told me to check out Grisman. I replied him back with a Thank You. It is funny that , at times of throwing names around the Music Circle and people have no idea of whom David Lindley was. They will say "Never heard of him" I would reply that you most certainly have ! Just listen to Jackson Browne or maybe Dolly Pardon. David was a Stringed Instrument Genius and could make a Teisco Del Rey sound like a Gibson Byrdland ! Henry thank you for this Video and once again I am so sorry for your loss Sir ! And for the entire Universe !

My guitar teacher Mitch keys Norco taught David Lindley how to play the banjo and he told me that he's got jealous cuz it took them two days to master it
I auditioned for you guys in Boston in the late 80s. David wanted to work together but we got busy. My condolences. I admired him.

My sincere condolences to David’s family, and to you as well Henry. It is so hard to have a close musical collaborator pass on to another plane of existence. We not only miss their physical presence, their silly jokes and their friendship, but also the aspects of their playing that were unique to them. And David’s playing was so unique.
I also relate to seemingly suddenly having become one of the “old guys.” I started hanging around and learning fiddle from older musicians while in my teens. Now fifty years later I’m still playing with the “young guys and gals,” friends I made back then. Now that we’re officially “the old farts,” we don’t know where the time went and not a day goes by that we don’t think of our mentors, their playing (and their dumb jokes). I am most certain that David (and you as well) will live on in the hearts, minds and music of all those you have shared your tunes and friendship with.

I’m so very fortunate to have seen him numerous times in the nineties and had the pleasure of meeting him every time. He did that schmoozing thing after shows. God bless him. He’s one of the best, Prince of Polyester..
Was lucky enough to see him play at a small outdoor stage with my 3 young kids. It was a warm summer night and my children danced and twirled under the stars to Lindley's music without a care in the world. What a night that was for us, and one that will leave us with memories for a lifetime.

I was first introduced to David's music in the late '60s, via the third Kaleidoscope album. The 11-minute globetrotting (and exhausting) "Seven-Ate Sweet" still ranks as a masterpiece for me. The album made clear that David saw all the world's musics as equal. I think the only reason he hadn't tried his hand at Tuvan throat-singing was because there weren't any stringed instruments involved.
I had the good fortune to meet David briefly about 20 years ago, at the Ottawa Bluesfest, after seeing a set of his (that I think he partly shared with Kaki King). Later that evening, he hosted a "steel summit" of many of the players at Bluesfest who either held a bar in their hand or tube/pipe/bottleneck on their pinky or ring finger. There was Harry Manx, Bill Frisell with Greg Leisz, the Campbell Brothers, Don Rook and the Henrys, and a few others. Sadly, Sonny Landreth had left earlier in the day, after his set, as had Colin Linden, or else we would have had "the complete set" (as we used to refer to our baseball cards). It was, as David often referred to such things, "too much fun".

He was such an adventurous player. I've liked his music going all the way back to the band 'Kaleidoscope'. What a band they were. There's a bit of film with David playing with Terry Reed at the Glastonbury Festival in England. It's mezmerizing stuff. Well, I'd like to think that he's back on Mount Olympus playing for the Gods and eternally healthy and well.

A true and fitting tribute to a very great musician
'll never forget his Original House of Blues concert-( Cambrige MA)I was a bit late. Climbing the stairs I could hear a very full glorious sound Guitar, Vocals,Drums, and a superb bass player. Sliding through the elbow-to-elbow crowd to get a close look, I discovered that Lindley was playing lap-style and was finger-styling the bass lines as well while singing. A two-man band: Stage left was all drums, a massive completist collection of all toms, bells, hand-drums, rattles, gongs...stage left was a very large collection of various string instruments, including balalaïkas, bouzoukis... Each instruments was rigged with there own pick-up and plugged into their own preamp, stacked in a fridge-size rack-mount unit. Lindley had tweaked each instrument to perfection ( at least 12) That was my dream set-up: Variety and perfect tone. ( For the Geeks: All contact-mics, with a small pinch of chorus, I'd say 5%) Lindley's singing was also surprisingly great and what an superbly awful polyester shirt. ( I actually have my own collection of those too!-) I helped him after the show putting things in their cases so I could touch and smells the magic wands. David was gracious, and pleasant, easy going. I guess the true Spirit of California....ChEars to David Lindley!!!

Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin loved David Lindley and the band 'Kaleidoscope'. They were so eclectic. They were ahead of their time. Incorporating 'world music' into psychedlic rock and roll. The world's a poorer and sadder place without David Lindley around, sigh.

Thank you for this loving remembrance and my condolences go out for all who feel the impact of his passing. Mr. Lindley's music has had profound influence on the soundtrack of popular culture and will continue to be an inspirational beacon going forward into our indeterminate futures. Thank you man. I saw him at multiple times at world music festivals back in the day. He was always the highlight of the evening. He played and sat in with huge numbers of bands from everywhere.

I know David was your great friend, and I'm sorry you lost him.
Henry , thank you soo much for this rare view of those precious moments, Lindley was my mentor,friend and my inspiration for all things Lap steel. I was introduced to him by my Nadine’s buddy Bernie Larson. He played my 1st Lap Steel at the Roxy with Rayo X then asked me to make him a snakeskin lap steel which I gave him. I am out on tour with Jackson Browne & we miss Lindley very much ! There will never be another soo great!!!

I can count on my fingers the great musicians that have touched my emotions in a way to move me to physical tears. David was/is one of those at the top of the list, in fact. Watching this video brings those emotions to the surface. There is every so often a conduit that can tap into the vibrations of life and the universe. To me, David was one such a conduit. He was a gift that will continue to be appreciated and cherished for years to come. Thank you, Henry, for sharing this lovely collection a videos.
