Fair review. I tend to eat at least half of my chips first before I get to the fish. Reminds me to take a little bottle of vinegar when on a road trip. People here who say that's a small portion of chips are harking back to several years ago. Two tasty pieces of fish for $9 is a good deal. Getting chips with them is a bonus. There's not many takeaway outlets left that haven't substantially downsized their portions for the money.

I’m an Englishman who loves fish and chips, I live in the USA (where what is called fish and chips is generally very expensive and very poor quality), and have family in Australia where I love barramundi (and other fish) and chips. Used to visit Auckland when we had family there and watched f&c go gradually downhill. Nevertheless, the best fish and chips I ever had was at Shelley Beach near Auckland down by the bay - freshly landed gurnard and chips. Magnificent

My several trips across the Tasman haven't yielded any decent fish but their prawns in FNQ are next level.

The best fish and chips in this country are from Hampden Takeaways. Their Blue Cod and I think they use Makihikihi chips are head and shoulders above anything else in NZ. Eta mayonnaise is best with fish and chips, Watties tomato sauce is overrated that and other tomato sauces wouldn't go near mine except for maybe "Rocket Sauce" that is made in Wellington. The thought of malt vinegar makes my stomach churn.

Hi man. Impressed on your pronunciation on the Tarakihi it sounded better than how 90% of "kiwis" say it. I've noticed a lot of "award winning" takeaways are pretty dam stingy in NZ. This guys prices are crap. Are you coming to the north island?

You got lucky. In our house tarakihi is prized above nearly all others when we have fish and chips here in Auckland. Many Kiwis enjoy tomato sauce with their chip, vinegar is not commonly preferred. Most chip shops have sauce and other flavouring sachets on the counter for purchase. Enjoy your travels.

Here in Australia in our Fish & Chip Shops (Chippies) is that you would Never Ever get Mushy Peas with your Fish & Chip Orders at any Chippie Shop anywhere here from places of any Towns &/or Cities all over Australia at all but the only thing you can only get is Tartare Sauce and also Vinegar and also a Slice of Lemon as well too & beside that (NOT) Only we have both Grilled Fish & Battered Fish but also these is Crumbed Fish that you can also have with your Chips & the Crumbed Fish Fillets is covered in Bread Crumbs instead of Batter of course.

Fish in the Fish and Chip shops in NZ are damned nice , actually better than in Britain. Usually the fish is prebattered in the UK and sits in a warmer . But In NZ they usually batter it on the spot as you order it and then they cook it , so it is absolutely nice and crisp . So different . I live on the Isle of Arran and theres a Chip shop by the Ferry Terminal that does the on the spot battering and theres local fish so that is good. I grew up in NZ , and I made myself cut out the treats as I was tempted too often when back on a visit. Much better than the takeaway. Though maybe you like more chips -sometimes they can make you too heavy so with 2 bits of fish I found the amount is just right. ( I think the chip shop in the UK has been going down-hill over the years maybe with costs and so on but maybe there is a few gems here and there. Like on Arran!)

You'd usually get a bit more chips in a scoop than that, that is a bit poor...or did you ask for less than a full scoop...? You need a few different tastings, a range of seaside locations throughout the country...some of the most famous, best-rated fish and chip shops are up in Northland.

I don't think vinegar has ever been a big thing with NZ fish & chips. Maybe get a wee bottle of it to take with you in case you encounter f&c that doesn't supply it? I shall be trying vinegar as a condiment next time I have f&c... tonight

What is it with Brits and vinegar? The stuff is disgusting! Kiwi's don't have a palate for vinegar, we 100% go for Watties Tomato sauce.
NZ fish is better as Pacific Ocean fish are different and better tasting than Atlantic Ocean fish.
