- Join me on the adventure of a lifetime as I (an American) try and review New Zealand pies! Are they really as good as the Kiwis say they are? What's the hype about? Have we been missing out this whole time?!?!
Watch this video to answer any of those questions or any other questions that you may have!

and let me know in the comments, What's your favorite pie?
I went to the US for a few months and every day I was shaking my head in disbelief at how they didn't have meat pies. The meat pie is the sign of an advanced civilisation.
To the choir doth he preach
Oh no you should of jumped off the nearest tallest building when you realised Americans dont do meat pies
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
I lived there for 20 years and a month before I left I went to Upper Michigan and had Cornish Pasties there. OMG they were divine! Never saw a meat pie in all those years except a chicken pot pie that had no base.
My guy just smashed two pies on the side of the road, thats a bona-fide kiwi fine-dining experience right there!
Second only to driving with your knees and smashing it on the road
Man smashed two pies, a ginger slice and a lamington.. without a drink 👀
THIS New Zealander is in awe 🤣
fucking eh!!!!
Welcome too nz my guy 🤙💯
To be fair, resisting eating a pie for 20min will leave you being able to eat it without it being complete lava.
as the cop said in an old kiwi meme, always blow on the pie
Safer communities together! LOL
Or hold it out the window while you're driving. (Risk getting a blowfly or wasp in it then though)
Hahaha that’s one of my favourite episodes always blow on the pie 😂😂

Welcome to New Zealand. :) Have a wonderful time here.
Thank you! I have been enjoying every minute that I have spent in this beautiful country!

Fairlie Bakehouse / Fairlie, South Island NZ - Best Pies in the South Island.
They're overrated
Pork belly top tier
$9.50 for a fair lie pie is so overrated.
Try Jimmies pies ...in Roxburgh, but can get them all around the lower South Island.
100%
Patrick's Pies in Tauranga consistently take out most of the awards every year. They're the benchmark.
fark off, best pies routinely come out of rotorua. tauranga too richy rich to get their hands dirty to make good pies.
@@zackr1896Pat has the same bakeries in Rotorua
Is that the one in Bethlehem? Fuckin brilliant
Tauriko Patrick's pies are bad ass the garlic prawn is a must
@Channel_of_nothing didn't know they had one on that side....
If you're ever in Auckland, Blue Rose Cafe In Sandringham has amazing Polynesian inspired pies like:
The Palusami pie - Corned beef (not the tinned stuff) Taro leaves, onion, coconut cream and a little chili
The Hangi Pie - Pork belly, stuffing, kumara and pumpkin
Lamb, taro and cream cheese pie
The Boil up pie - Bacon bones watercress and potato
and a few more amazing pies that have to be tried.
I was really disappointed with Blue Rose cafe's pies. There are so many better places.
Overrated pies
Na bro, sorry those are trash. There's so many better places on the Shore.
Bland nz taste buds. 😅
They're good for the advance pie eater wouldn't recommend to a first timer
I've eaten pies all over NZ and Oz, and my favourite - by a long way - is the Beef Wellington from The Lunch Shack in Hawera. It's a pretty modest looking place that's easy to miss, but all of their pies are top tier.
Beef Wellington is not a pie u duffuss
I'm from Hawera and that's not even the best pie in Hawera, the Hawera Cafe and Bakery has better pies and they are cheaper too
@@whatshappenedhere1784Thanks. Street parking for my tanker - alrighty!
The roast Lamb pie at the lunch shack is great. Taste ls like a roast meal in a pie, then their brisket pie is good aswell..
Andersons!
As a kiwi living in Australia, i can confirm Australian pies are just not there. Who uses a pastry with the consistency of a moist biscuit? And steak that's 90% gravy? Mrs macs the pride and joy of Australia, that's who! 🤮😂
Yeh our pies aren't as good but seriously if you're going to get a pie in Oz go to a good bakery do not buy that Mac shit, the best commercial pies in Oz are villies stuff mac
The last time I had a Mrs Mac's "steak" pie, the label should have read "tough steak and (mostly)gristle pie".
Mrs macs that's getting desperate mate haha
I miss NZ pies so much... you just don't get those cheap-n-cheerful local bakeries that are everywhere in NZ
I’m gonna just go ahead and list my complaint. Got a pie in eastern Sydney…… not gonna name and shame the suburb.
BREAD INSTEAD OF PASTRY.
Enjoy your time in New Zealand .
Thank you! I will! 😁👍
The cream in the coffee much like the milk will be actual decent milk from grass fed cows, you would of noticed NZ being very grassy and green, that translates to good food for cows, which in return gives NZ the worlds best dairy, beef and lamb, grassfed compared to grainfed is very different.
Don't forget Chocolate ❤
I could always taste the difference in the milk when cows changed their diet to green grass
After Australia....kiwi is probably a good enough a second choice....when you can't get the best!
Milk is fkn ripoff and this coming from born kiwi. Dairy prices are outrageous in NZ. Its kind of a joke how much we pay.
I have visited NZ from brisbane and I never had a bad coffee or a bad meal the whole time. Their food standards are fabulous!
Just a comment about the whipped cream. Lots of places nowadays use cream from a whipped cream dispenser called a Whippit, sometimes spelled whippet or whip-it, they have a cartridge of nitrous oxide (nangs) which squirts the cream out under pressure when the trigger is squeezed. The cream looks as though it's whipped but, because the process is different it actually reverts to a sloppy, slightly watery mess not long afterwards. I'm betting the reason you felt the whipped cream in your iced coffee was somehow thicker is because it had been whipped the old school way, using beaters until it thickened. Much better end result and stays whipped and thick for ages afterwards and makes more sense if they're using it in the kind of quantities they'd need to coat the inside of glasses. Lots of places only use whipped cream to squirt on top of a serving of cake so it's much more practical for them to just use a Whippit even though the end result is a bit rubbish.
I mean it's still going to be better comparing it to American whipped cream, which is almost always from a can.
I haven't ever had problems with whippets, though I must say I've never let it sit for even a short time.
Two words of advice. Always have heaps of cheese in your pie and always have heaps of cream in your lamington.
It's the kiwi way
Jimmy's pies is a must! It's worth the trip south!
Favourite slice is a custard square with passionfruit
That sounds great!!! Thank you for watching!
Custard Tart in Oz. Or schoolkid's name , Snotblock
Lamington without cream?..bro
I've never seen them without cream. Bit odd.
My wife, watching this vid with me, said your exact same words bro lol
Yeah very weird but I guess he would not know
More confused why the cafe would charge extra for cream on a lamington… wtf
Gosh, no! Although I'm an Australian so maybe it's a NZ thing? A pink jelly cake has cream 😊
"No way Australia can beat these" Chur Bro +1 like
Yep, I don’t care about having the best scenery or being the friendliest people….having the best pies is a real badge of honour 👍
Keep dreaming. 😅
Why do you guys have the worst takeaways and bakerys in NZ because you don't know any better.

I've lived in Oz for over 20 years and haven't found a pie here better than a kiwi pie 😋
Mrs Macs is the best you will find, hahaa.
Same here but been in Oz for 44 years :)
Try Pinjarra Bakery if you are ever in WA. The BEST!
@@shelleyblunder3656they are good, priced accordingly. We call into the little bakery in Brunswick Junction. $5 last time we were there.
Yep and cost arm and leg....@shelleyblunder3656
As a Kiwi living in Australia New Zealand food is amazing but Australia is a better place to live over all. But you can't beat New Zealand food.
You need to try the pies from Darfield Bakery and Fairlie Bakery in the South Island. Absolutely superb.
went to darfield bakery today, pie and crumbed chicken roll, then stop at sheffield bakery on way home, chur
FatBastard Pies from Invercargill are has to beat. Look em up on the Google
Such a good place to stop while heading to the coast
Pork belly pie from Fairlie. hands down the best
McGregors Mutton pies from Palmerston. The best.
I am so invested in this. My heart is filled with patriotic pride as you enjoy our national cuisine.
Fairlie Bakery pies, in the South Island. The apple and porkbelly is awesome. We go out of our way on trips down south to go there.
Lamington with cream is the way to go!!! Pies are life! 😅
Favorite pie: Butter Chicken, or Steak, Bacon, and Cheese. Favorite slice: Custard slice.
My local bakery does a chicken, camembert and cranberry pie - it's SO yummy!
We need more people like you trying things out. This is the kinda people we need in our country haha
Australia they can never ever compete with our meat pies we have the best pies and we own the meat pies and make them sooo good we the best no country can make it better than new Zealand pies💯💪😋✨
Big difference, ozzy meat is grain and dust fed, ours is grass fed. 🤷♂️
I once bought a pie in a "famous" pie shop in Braidwood NSW. It was labeled as a steak pie, but when I bit into it it was mince, so I went back and complained, and the girl behind the counter said "It's steak mince."
Just moved to aus 2 weeks ago and I've had a very meaty steak and pepper pie and it was pretty good but it was made by Asians, and asian food is always good. But im not sure if they were aussie or not. The only think that let it down was the pastry it wasn't flaky at all.
Yeah right, of course they are, so can all the kiwi's on the Gold Coast move home now please? Cuz?
@@scottkilla I'm not on the gold coast ask someone else 😂
I'm glad you're enjoying our food! Pop over the cook straight and try a pie from the Burleigh gourmet pie shop in Blenheim. I've only had their vegetarian pies but they are the most popular pies in the region and sell out often.
Wow! That bakery is amazing - we live just around the corner from them. When we were renovating our villa, we would buy lunches there - the least we could do, we were using their toilet! If I got there quick enough, I could get the potato top pie - mince inside. They would have a slice of tomato in melted cheese on top of the mashed potato - amazing! Though they no longer seem to use tomato on them. And they use real cream in the cakes and eclairs - you never end up with that nasty taste in the back of your throat like you do with mock cream.
For a first timer those selections were amazing. I don't understand why they aren't a thing in the states. Lamb and Kumura sounds delicious
You gotta try a mince and cheese pie and potato top pie. Two of my favourites.
How to make a lamington.
Either make/bake or buy a sponge cake. When cold, cut it into cubes and freeze it. Make up a raspberry jelly with about 1/3 the amount of water usually needed. Quickly dip the frozen sponge into the cool but unset jelly and then roll into coconut. Set aside to set on greaseproof paper. Easy peasy. Cut when set and fill with whipped cream.
Damn man the rate you’re growing at is insane, so happy for you! Haven’t been able catch your videos as frequently but I just completed university so I’m gonna be rewatching them all!
That pie looks great, would love to see more videos of you trying out New Zealand's food
Hello from Wellington New Zealand, enjoy your time here😊
Thank you, I will!
I love how much you love the food! Most places have pretty good pies. If you are ever in Tauranga head to Patrick's Pies in Bethlehem, you will be impressed with all the awards everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE in their shop and the pies and creative flavours do not disappoint!
If you eat a pie straight away remember to blow on the pie! A very common kiwi saying because the lava hot gravy and pie insides will burn the top of your mouth if a decently made pie!
And a lil controversial for some people but if it is your standard mince, mince and cheese, steak, steak and cheese, or potatoe top pie, some Wattie's tomato sauce goes great on top!
Loo forward to watching more of your adventures!
Thank you for the advice! I'm glad that you enjoy the content!
Enjoyed the video. Thoroughly entertaining. Loved it. ❤️ 👍
Just a heads up if anyone is looking for cheap pies, quiches and sweet slices etc in Tauranga. Raymons Pies have a wee store open to the public at the front of their factory, which is at the very end of Cypress St in Judea. They sell their food at wholesale prices there, so way cheaper than you'd pay at a retail bakery. For example a long slice of custard square (equivalent of three) is only $2.50. Definitely worth a look if you want reasonable food for a cheap price. Hope this helps someone. 😊
Hi 👋 I'm a Kiwi and have been to the USA. I can't remember eating a pie when I was there. So I can't comment on American pies. I liked the diners , and the bottomless cups of coffee. Buy one and get more cups for free. The cafes don't do that here. I'm pleased you like our pies.
The closest they have to a pie,is a chicken pot pie, nowhere near as nice.
@@Andy_M986 Sounds nice. I like chicken.
Denny's used to have bottomless coffees but it's only the filter stuff. More kiwis prefer flatewhites & espresso.
Everyone in NZ have their favourite pies...you got the mince pie right..the bag is designed to keep your hands some what clean...and to catch any of the insides that might drip out.....Cream doughnuts, cream apple turnovers....are something that needs a try.
Glad you're enjoying the pies and scenery in new zealand guy!
Dude, you have to try a creamed paua pie. Paua is the same as an abalone. Just yum! Try one at All The Sands Coffee when you get to sunny Whakatane. 😊
I used to love the Steak and oyster pies from Nelson's bakery in Inglewood when i was growing up. Hands down best for me - they were addictive as!
Steak and oyster 😂😂 that's plain wrong

Nada Bakery has won a bunch of national pie awards. Their pepper steak and the pork crackling and apple pie go hard. They have a shop in Johnsonville and Tawa (just outside Wellington)
Their Rueben pie is fantastic.
Kumara is what Americans call sweet Potato. Ever travel to the South island of NZ. Visit Oamaru there near the old dock is a penguin colony during breading season they're everywhere and these are little cute one's called Blue Penguin.
And don't forget to try a Penguin pie....
And seals too, just chillin on the beaches

Oslers pies, Marine Parade in Wairoa, Hawkes Bay. Winners of multiple awards. So if you ever head to Gisborne from Napier, be sure to stop for an Osler's pie
So happy to see this! I crave the Boil Up Pies daily 😊
Lamb curry pie looks yum as :)
I wish we had Meat Pies here in the USA.

I appreciate the view! I was there having a picnic two weeks ago. Miramar peninsular is spectacular!
Daily Bread Bakery - Waiwhetu/Wellington or Patrisha's Pies in Island Bay/Wellington (small corner shop)
Aaah! So many good pies to enjoy. My favourite (because I thought it was an unusual combination) was a Fairlie Bakery Salmon & Bacon pie. To die for. But Mariangi Bay Bakery has award winning pies as well.
Many years ago I was visiting Tasmania and driving around the coast south of Hobart in the middle of nowhere, there was a bakery from where I bought their Seafood pie. Again, to die for, crammed with scallops, prawns, and other seafood. Don’t know if it still exists, as it was over 20 years ago. Best pie that I tasted in Oz when I was working there.
Tasmania is the only place in Australia you will get good pies, but, in Aotearoa New Zealand they are everywhere even in the Sorvos i.e. B.P
Chur I'm kiwi living in Oz,my memories of my best pie ever tasted has to be ham & cheese pie at the corner shop near tekuiti high school NZ😋🤙😜
The salmon and bacon 🤗 it must be the richest pie (but its the pastry in Fairlie that steals the show)
Kawa Kawa paua mean pie❤❤❤❤❤😂
And if you visit Mapua in the top of the South island, Mapua village bakery makes INCREDIBLE food and insanely good pies.
Just want to say I appreciate the effort you went to to get a nice background - looks great!
Thank you! I'm glad that you appreciated the effort! Also, thank you for watching!
Daily bread bakery in Lower Hutt is the best

Welcome to New Zealand dude, glad you like the pies and hope you have a good time here
If you're ever up in Hawkes Bay; check out Shane-o's in Hastings, the Brisket pie is incredible.
Hammer Springs bakery had a crayfish (lobster) pie a few weekends ago. Was claimed as delicious but it was $50 so it should have been.
If you come to the South island you should definitely visit these two bakeries in Marlborough and try their pies: Burleigh pie shop in Blenheim, and Renwick bakery on main street of Renwick attached to the butcher shop.
Dude. I love your demeanor.
You give me good vibes man.
Stay healthy and happy bro... that means stay away from lamingtons !!!🤣
When next in Kilbirnie, Wellington I'm going to try those pies. Where you stopped to eat, I believe was Evans or Shelly Bay. Shelly Bay used to be the site of a NZ naval base. The very next suburb is Miramar where Weta Workshop and Peter Jackson's movie operation is. The filming is actually done at a former naval land-based facility in Miramar, when I last checked it out they had built a huge green screen mounted on a stack of shipping containers, really cool.
It would be a mistake to not try those pies if you're in the area! That's some pretty cool history about the area, thanks for the info! I hope you enjoyed the video!
Dont forget the fish and chips bro❤
OMG YES ITS SO GOOD I HAVE IT EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT
What a polite young man ❤
Glad to see our Aussie Lamingtons getting a look in!
Oh I don’t think so!
If you are coming to Blenheim in the South Island you need to go to The Burleigh Gourmet Pies and also Farlie Bakery.
Burleigh gourmet pies are a level above anything ive tried!
Lol just commented about the Burleigh pies!
*Oscars Kiwi Kafe* in Inglewood, NZ has the best pies in the country hands down...🥧 😋
This city girl approves!
There’s a place in central Otago about 30 mins south of Queenstown called Athol, they have a restaurant/bakery/BBQ smokehouse there called the Athol Shop I think but they do incredible in-house baked pies. Had one of their pulled pork, apple and thyme ones and it was mouth-wateringly good!
The West Coast Pie Company in Westport are the best pies, closely followed by Fat Bastard Pies in Invercargill. You can get both online shipped NZ wide. And always get the lamingtons with cream, NZ cream and all dairy products are amazing!
If you're in the mood for a mac daddy feast of a pie, then just around the corner from Cupcake is Trisha's Pies, which sells large size pies. Just make sure you go earlier in the day because otherwise the tradies tend to clean them out and leave only the regular ones (if any) behind. Cozy Cake Shop on Manners also has a large array of pie flavours that feel like they should be bakery staples but somehow aren't, so that's worth checking out too if you're in the city looking for food.
Trisha’s pies after a winters day spent bodyboarding nice clean cold swells at lyall bay was a must, good to hear they are still going
Subscribed the minute I knew uou were eating pies and sealed the deal when I realised you were filming in Wellington.
A perfect lunch a meat pie and a vanilla slice Yum! One of the best pies I've ever eaten was from Balfour's bakery in Adelaide Australia.
Try the pies from Mr Bun in Miramar, loved getting them during lunch in high school
I'm writing this down in my notes, if I try it I will let you know what I think! Thank you for the suggestion!

To think Brock, 10 - 15 years ago we did have not a great selection of pies - Mince, Steak or Bacon & Egg. Look how far we have progressed !! Great video & location -thank you
NZ has had places with great specialty pies for decades. There are lot more around these days, though, and more varieties.
That's interesting! I would've never guessed! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching! 😁👍
Yeah that's not true - I remember being amazed by the concept of a Thai chicken curry pie, then wowed by the taste, that I got from a frigging BP!!! in 2003 or 2004. If we had them in gas stations 20 years ago then they were elsewhere before then.
WHAT? 😂 NZ's pie selections have only been available in the last 15 - 20 years? What a total load of bollacks lol.
Patricia's pies in Kilbirnie are really good too, especially their large mince pie. It is interesting listening to different perspectives. Thanks and enjoy your trip.
I used to live in Wgtn. Very familiar with that area. Brought back happy memories! Thank-you.
Gotta try a potato top... my reserve melts from wanting other pies when I see one of those - but do have tomato sauce with it, Kiwi tomato sauce is yum.
Also is south island , try Oxford pies baked in Oxford
Sheffield Pies in Sheffield on Arthur's Pass Road. Try the Venison and Whisky pie. You'll find the same pie in Oxford. You won't be disappointed.
Always keep a bottle of watties tomato sauce in your glove box in case the chance of a pies happens upon you. Mince, mince & cheese and steak & cheese pies go good with tomato sauce
My kids think I'm a disgrace but I can't bear the thought of eating a pie with cheese in it. Never gonna happen.
