Love the video Tom, but it made me laugh at @4:40 when you said "That's the great thing about the Fish n Chip experience is finding a wall or a bench", then you end up just eating it standing up 🤣😞.
Golden Union on Poland Street, close to the junction of Oxford Street is A MUST imho. The batter is wafer-thin, light and crisp, the Cod fresh out of the sea.
For me, Golden Union off Oxford Street does the trick. Eaten there a bunch of times now, and their Haddock & Chips pretty much always hits the spot. Their soft swirl afterwards is perfect to round off the meal.
I could not agree more: Golden Union is out of this world, and the staff are wonderful: I recently left the South of England and had to say goodbye to Adrian; Kerry, and the team. On my farewell visit they gave me a most thoughtful gift as a reminder of good times. I cannot sing their praises highly enough, and boy, do I miss the staff and the food xx
I love your taxi vlogs, Tom, but it’s also great to have other content as well. Food reviews, places of interest off the beaten track, history. Who better than a friendly, likeable and knowledgeable taxi driver to show us all the real London. Keep up the great work!!!
But your salaries are lower on average than the people buying fish and chips in London (or pints) - free market means prices will inflate yo what the market it will pay (accommodating the cost of doing business)
The Seashell of Lisson Grove - still the best and caters for all budgets. You can dine in and have the full works washed down with a lovely chilled Chablis or just go for a takeout. Never been disappointed.
And back in the day this used to be a real cabbies place….always heavily patronised by the trade. There’s a rank round the corner but you could even park up outside… I always remember a punter coming in and asking the cabbies busily eating their fish suppers if anyone would take him to Kings Cross. You can guess the collective reply he received…!! a
If you're off the beaten track out east, Ifratelli at the top of West Ham Lane in Stratford are pretty hard to beat. Italian family owned, they've been there since 1966. Closed on Mondays like a proper fish and chip shop should be. The traditional reason for this is that people didn't go fishing on Sundays so there would be no fish at the wholesale markets on a Monday morning. So if someone was open on Monday they were selling two day old fish. Doesn't really matter with refrigeration nowadays but it's funny how what once had a good reason begind it has just now become tradition.
Great to watch all your You Tube streams I was born in London lived there for 27 years growing up we used to to admire the London cab drivers due to the knowledge that you have to learn Keep them coming.. Do you know Mark the taxi driver done a best fish and chip stream. Best regards 85 year old silver surfer
Tom finally does Fishcotheque Found it a couple of years ago when looking for a good chippie to take an American friend to... definitely not disappointed
For me, the best chippy in London is my local chippy, Ken’s Fish Bar. It featured on Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix and Jay Rayner has said it’s the best, if that’s anything to go by. Chips are great, fish is great as batter is great. (Its in South-East London, between Dulwich and Herne Hill)
I would also add Station Fish Bar outside West Ham Station. Fish is superb , loads of chips which are perfection and their Southern Fried Chicken is the best I have had.
The Sea Shell on Lisson Grove, any of the Sutton and Sons, and the one on the top of Poland St, been there ages but think it's changed names a few times now, and the Golden Hind on Marylebone Lane. Mental about Fishcoteque, been past there, literally, hundreds of times, and never been tempted to stop. Always thought it looked like it would be awful. Nice surprise that.
I’m an ex Brit living in Sarasota Florida and more several years doing fish and chips reviews on Facebook. So far only 1 restaurant awarded 10/10 Love your video
The only thing I've learned from watching a half dozen fish-and-chips shootout videos is that no one can agree on which place is the best. It seems to be completely subjective.
I actually did end up eating at Rock and Sole Plaice in London, as it seemed to rank fairly well in every shootout I saw. It wasn't bad but honestly it was just fried fish. It pretty much tasted exactly like any fried cod you'd get almost anywhere in the US.
Price of doing business in that London unfortunately. I grew up 20 miles from Whitby and I would guess its £10 or so for fish and chips from most places.
@kirklamplugh5062 £7.50 round here. Just outside Leeds Worked and lived in whitby for couple years and loved it. Think it's only that expensive in the tourist traps.
@@GittosGaming perfectly fair but Tom is covering very central London areas in this piece, so thats the comparison. Its not like he's checking out prices in Hounslow or Wood Green. I bet The Magpie and Hadleys in Whitby are probably 12 quid for takeaway.
My fav local chippy is Mr Chips in the City of Salford. Regular Cod/Haddock & Chips costs £7.75 (6oz) Large Cod/Haddock & Chips £9.45 (8oz) Small Cod/Haddock & Chips (small) with Mushy Peas £4.50 (3oz) I think one great thing about most chippies is the large portions of chips so me and the partner will get two fish and share a portion of chips. It’s more than enough for us.
How about Sea Fresh on Wilton Road in Pimlico? Just a few days ago, I spent £6.50 on 3 cod pieces & chips (although I was given 4). OK, it’s not your traditional ‘fish’ as it’s the smaller cod pieces. But at £6.50, who can argue with that?
Now you’re talking. Goddard’s in Greenwich gets my vote. Sad they couldn’t stay in their old shop but even being across the road in Greenwich Market it’s just as good and single/single for £5.50 is a bargain all things considered.
I can't believe Hobson's is in this review!! I'm from Chicago and come here every time I visit London. I always felt like nobody knew about this place but me😂.
Are you sure they really are made fresh? So many shops no longer make fresh batter and pick the fish out of a box with a coating on it already. Chips are similarly coming from a pre cut bag ie brought to the shop pre cut. Also you don’t really go for tartar sauce, gherkin or pickled onion? I can’t eat them without.
Should have given rating for health as well ie based on oil used, skin kept on the fish, etc. Also you missed out inclusion of green mushy peas, that was a staple part of the British chippie experience for many growing up!
The video says Fishcotheque cod & chips is £12.95 but Fishcotheque's online menu shows it's £16.95. Why 30% price difference? Can you please clarify? Thanks
After watching this, we were excited to go try Fishcotheque. Not as expected... Price was 16.95...thought it was a bit expensive for what it was. In addition, there was a 12.5% service charge. Not the best experience.
I remember our local fish and chip in Camden Road, Tunbridge Wells having a picture of Arthur Mullard on the wall. Better than John Prescott, I think plus they always had a queue every lunchtime which was something missed these days.
For the few years leading up to covid I worked off Covent Garden. The best thing about going on somewhere after office hours was treating my self to some ‘top chips’, as they became known, from Rock and Sole Plaice. Worked for me! Nom 😋
The Camden Eye has really good fish and chips but it's a pub and there was a really, really good one under London Bridge in Flat Iron Square in 2017, but I think it's gone. Great vid!
I moved to London from the North. Jeez, I had a chippy from Harrogate the other week. Ridiculous! 10/10. Southerners don’t know how to makeF&C but Brockley Rock’s alright for London
I happened to stumble into Hobson's at Porchester Road last Thursday ... I liked the cod very much, but as a Dutchie I like my fries more crispy ... but overall I had a very good meal !
Great and honest fish and chips review.ok I can recommend two amazing fish and chips in north London the 1st is fresh fry fish and chips in Barnet and the 2nd is toffs in muswell hill . please do a video review on those one day I'll be happy 😂
I went on a tourist trip to London during last week and had fish&chips at that exact Hobsons near Charing Cross, what a coincidence😄 Just like you i gave it a solid 7/10. Taste wasn´t remarkable, and i can make a pretty good replica at home in my kitchen. Quite expensive also if you like me, come from a Euro currency country. The pound seems to be strong at the moment.
Pretty sure Fishcoteque is where my dad and I went one year some time ago. We got into a black cab and asked the driver to take us to his favorite chip shop, and he even went inside with us and ordered himself lunch. Aaron Eckhart was in there eating, too.
Thanks for that, I was staying out near Olympia the other week and couldn't find a chippy. Didn't want to go to a pub as the last time I did the fish had skin on, which is a severe no, no.
It’s a pity there aren’t many good chippies in London. Toffs in Muswell is my favourite but even that isn’t anywhere close to the quality of a northern seaside town
Agree with you 100% - the skin is the best part, why are some people so fussy about it, it definitely seems to add flavour to cod and haddock if the chip shops leave it on the fish.
Fish not your thing? What about Sandwiches in London?
ua-cam.com/video/8-dhcyrYdc4/v-deo.html
Can you do best sunday roast or best sticky toffee pudding with custard (really hard to find)!?
No such thing as best Fish & Chips; because straight out of a deep-fryer they ALL taste of nothing but cooking oil.
Can the restaurants you shown on the video do UPS Export Next Day Air to New York, USA? Just want fresh London fish and chips without flying in.
The first loved simple meals of the early naval crew
Love the video Tom, but it made me laugh at @4:40 when you said "That's the great thing about the Fish n Chip experience is finding a wall or a bench", then you end up just eating it standing up 🤣😞.
I have 1 rule in life, "Never buy fish and chips from somewhere which also sells southern fried chicken or donner kebab"
100% agree
Same thing. I have rule about Asian restaurants selling Chinese food with Sushi or Thai foods together. Just not professional to me.
I only buy a Fish supper from Italian Fish and Chip shops. Fact
Not bad if that’s the only rule you got h 😊
Wish I had your life. I have 2 things that rule my life.
Golden Union on Poland Street, close to the junction of Oxford Street is A MUST imho. The batter is wafer-thin, light and crisp, the Cod fresh out of the sea.
I go to Golden Union everything I visit London. Have been gong htere for yrs. Huge portion of fish and chips.
Glad to see Poppies is still going. Had some good fish & chips from there over the years.
Visited London for the first time last summer and landed on Fishcotheque - delighted to see it come out on top here! Had a great experience with it.
Love this style of video! It's very Insider food tours style!
Thanks for the reviews, Tom! We took down some valuable notes for our next visit to London.
I love your taxi vlogs, Tom, but it’s also great to have other content as well. Food reviews, places of interest off the beaten track, history. Who better than a friendly, likeable and knowledgeable taxi driver to show us all the real London. Keep up the great work!!!
Two of my favourites are Kennedy's on Goswell Road and Fish Central, on Central Street.
I agree with you . Been giving them both business for over 20 years .
Some of these prices feel rather expensive, here in South West England, you can buy fish and chips for under £10.
the rent in london is a lot higher
That is rare now, and you know it
Kebab and chips for us is £12, fish and chips about £10. Norfolk.
But your salaries are lower on average than the people buying fish and chips in London (or pints) - free market means prices will inflate yo what the market it will pay (accommodating the cost of doing business)
I can get a fish dinner (with a massive fish) for £8 in Liverpool and as its a fish dinner you get mushy peas and either curry or gravy with it
The Seashell of Lisson Grove - still the best and caters for all budgets. You can dine in and have the full works washed down with a lovely chilled Chablis or just go for a takeout. Never been disappointed.
I grew up round the corner from the sea Shell, many years ago, well before their current location. It was always great.
Yes mate. Seashell is the best in London !
The Fryer's Delight.
19 Theobalds Rd, London WC1X 8SL
Old school fish and chips and 10.50 👍
Definitely this one ☝️
Worst fish n chips I’ve ever had, rancid old oil that hasn’t been changed for about 15 years, sorry !
One of the few places that cook with Tallow
And back in the day this used to be a real cabbies place….always heavily patronised by the trade. There’s a rank round the corner but you could even park up outside…
I always remember a punter coming in and asking the cabbies busily eating their fish suppers if anyone would take him to Kings Cross. You can guess the collective reply he received…!!
a
Could walk to Kings Cross from there!@@mrnickyexit
Back in the day it was The Seashell of Lisson Grove for me.
Was going to comment the same it’s very good lots of cabs outside too so must be a cabbie favourite
10 yrs ago, this was the best. disappointed when went back in sept 23,
Yeah used to go decades ago love the "plaice!"
The chippy on Pembridge Road near the mini roundabout is a nice one

It's nice that they've maintained their standing close to 60yrs..fantastic,worth checking out for that alone.👍✌️
Did anyone else spot the real Routemaster going past at 1:52.
Priceless.
Nice to see promotion of other Traditional forms of London Transport. 😎
Great to watch all your You Tube streams I was born in London lived there for 27 years growing up we used to to admire the London cab drivers due to the knowledge that you have to learn

I can’t wait to try this one day, was a great feature in that episode
@@TomtheTaxiDriverIf you do an episode of fish and chip shops outside of central, definitely feature them. 11/10 quality and Ken is really friendly !

I've actually sat where you were sat at Waterloo but with a kebab from the place over the road. Really entertaining video.
Such a personal thing, a regular topic of conversation on the rank...fishcoteque looked great.
Tom the foil is to keep it heat and box warm( like runners after a race)
£14.60 for the first one. I'm gonna get angry watching this. I pay half that price for bigger and better up in the north
Us northerners would die if we payed that price 😂😂
Price of doing business in that London unfortunately. I grew up 20 miles from Whitby and I would guess its £10 or so for fish and chips from most places.

I'd suggest Fish! kitchen in borough market. Worked for KCL and divided time between Guy's Campus and James Clerk Maxwell Building
I can't believe Hobson's is in this review!! I'm from Chicago and come here every time I visit London. I always felt like nobody knew about this place but me😂.
Thank You Tom .
Excellent Fish Chipps.
13.60 £ good Price.😂😂😂😂😂😂 People in London live in a parallel Universum.
What is crazy to me is how this channel is still under 100k subs.
Its because he eats fish n chips without mushy peas.

What about sausage in batter and chips for those of us who don’t eat fish?

Kennedy's of Goswell Road or Barbican
C’mon driver, these are legendary!

Have a great day!! ❤
Nice one mate good energy good video
“You don’t look like a cab driver.” Keep eating all that fish and chips and it won’t take long.
I like Seashell in Lisson Grove - best fish and chips in London!
How exactly did you manage do MISS the 4-5 epic locations and choose good but not great ones?
I trust a cabbie far more than so-called influencers
Master's Superfish, past Fishcotheque on Waterloo Rd, still the finest. Free prawns while you wait and you get a pot of tea too.
Extra points for NO MUSHY Peas!! The best I've had was in Stoke-on-Trent, but I had to work hard to keep the peas off. The search continues! 🙂
Got to try Fryers delight on Theobalds road, central, round corner from Holborn station, they only take cash but trust me, proper worth it!!
respect on the baracuta jacket
Great video Tom love that 😃😃😃
I moved to London from the North. Jeez, I had a chippy from Harrogate the other week. Ridiculous! 10/10. Southerners don’t know how to makeF&C but Brockley Rock’s alright for London
Old Captain next to Tottenham Stadium the best for me
Agree 100%
Best I've tried is the ideal fish bar in pinner, northwest London, pretty far from the centre but they do some of the best fish and chips I've had!
I happened to stumble into Hobson's at Porchester Road last Thursday ... I liked the cod very much, but as a Dutchie I like my fries more crispy ... but overall I had a very good meal !
Best value in London is Gigs on Tottenham street with their lunchtime special mini cod and chips of £8.50 Monday to Thursday.
This must have been a very fun video to film! Haha
Great and honest fish and chips review.ok I can recommend two amazing fish and chips in north London the 1st is fresh fry fish and chips in Barnet and the 2nd is toffs in muswell hill . please do a video review on those one day I'll be happy 😂
Sutton and sons on Stoke Newington High Street ... With nice homemade tartar and of course mushy peas.
Mate just go to a random local pub and ask for fish n chips, it will surely be great
shouldn't the fish batter be much more crispy? i would hate soft batter on a FRIED item....
You just came up at random. I like you immediately. Liked and subscribed, as the kids say. Carry on.
Mr Tom saw you today around Pimlico greetings from a PHV Driver ❤

Masters superfish - Waterloo road. Best f&c in london. Try their mustard cod. Been there for decades! Well worth a try.
Thanks for that, I was staying out near Olympia the other week and couldn't find a chippy. Didn't want to go to a pub as the last time I did the fish had skin on, which is a severe no, no.
Try the one in Queen’s Park , excellent
9:04 that one looks like a frozen cod warmed up
My thoughts exactly. As soon as I saw it I thought frozen all day long.
The sea shell in marylebone use to be the bees knees. These days Mr Fish in Queens Park and than a nice sit in the park is great
😀👍
Could try the Laughing Halibut, 38 Strutton Ground

Josephs fish and chips on Tower Bridge Road is worth a try when your in the area Tom. Also Toffs in Muswell hill is legendary!
Toff’s of Muswell Hill
Enjoyed the review's! There's a good fish and chip shop just down the crowd from Fishcoteque called Master's it's £10.50 takeaway Cod And Chips
Sorry mate my favorite and I Grew up with Mr.Fish Queens Pk station. Can’t miss it on the corner !! 👍🏾👍🏾
Why are people trying to compare central london prices to some remote chip shop in their local town 🤦♂️
Because they are idiots, you want to ask them how much their houses cost.
Forgot Gravelys in Leeds town centre eat in or take out they’re lovely too.
It’s a pity there aren’t many good chippies in London. Toffs in Muswell is my favourite but even that isn’t anywhere close to the quality of a northern seaside town
Nice to seean absorbent paper , removes grease
Best by far on the other side of the river is Brockleys Rock in Brockley. Delicious
@tom…no Fryers Delight?
Agree with you 100% - the skin is the best part, why are some people so fussy about it, it definitely seems to add flavour to cod and haddock if the chip shops leave it on the fish.
great video, i love these tips. Anyone knows the places for the best poured draught beers in London?
Always go for haddock over cod. Just a better fish for frying in my opinion.
Do they all eat with taste testing spoons?
