@@GlobetrottingBrock I basically sat there till after midnight watching your videos, I couldnt stop, my hubby came and dragged me to bed. It is so good to see the real NZ as we kiwis experience it. Especially in a real life, simple way. No ceremoney or fake bull#@$%. A lot of kiwis never get to do the expensive touristy things that are often portrayed, but the stuff you show is what most of us can relate to. Keep up the great work.

A British UA-camr and his wife came to New Zealand and the wife ordered fish and chips for lunch. She leaned over to her British husband and said " I think New Zealand makes fish and chips better than England where they were invented." Her husband looked down sad and said "Yeah I Know".

The main difference is that they cook the fish and chips when you order it in NZ, while in the UK it's generally pre-cooked, sitting in a vat. The NZ fish is nicer as well for some reason.

It's the same story in Australia.
NZ and Australian seafood tends to be much, much, better than the UK.
I suspect it's a combination of very fresh local fish, Australian sunflower oil at exactly the right temperature, a well made beer batter and chefs who really care about the overall quality 👍

I'd definitely be keen to hear your thoughts on New Zealand ice cream. I know it's winter but Kiwis do ice cream year round are the world's largest consumers of ice cream (8 gallons per person). In Wellington, Duck Island on Cuba Street is hand's down the most popular spot for ice cream, followed by Kaffee Eis which does gelato. For maximum flavour options, I'd recommend getting a Flight (8 flavours) from Duck Island or a half litre (4 flavours) from Kaffee Eis. 🙏

Initially I was surprised about the prices. But then I saw what you got for your money. The serving of snapper (fish) was really big. The Paua (abalone) patty was full of the meat, and large to generous. Both are expensive in NZ. So I think you got a great deal. I wish I was in Karori, Wellington to check a similar meal out!!!!
Some fish and chip outfits put very little Paua into their patty's..... your Paua patty looked like a luxury patty.
Also, they do have Paua (abalone) in the southern areas of Australia. I don't know if they feature them in fish and chip shops tho......

Where most cooks make a mistake with pineapple fritters is they use canned pineapple, but if you get a dead ripe pineapple peel it and cut a good thick chunk, the fritter will be amazing. You can even make pineapple chunks deep fried in batter, that you can make bit sized!

Dad & I were keen fishermen in the 60’s .. we used to get an assortment of reef fish, snapper, sweet lip, red rock cod, squire, in winter we went fishing for whiting, beautiful sweet fish, we would catch between 50 & 100 (big job scaling, gutting & filleting) but the were delicious fried in egg & bread crumbs. The best fish I ever had was Perl Perch ❤. I’m 72 now & finding it harder & harder to get nice F&C now in Australia.😔

That’s a good fritter, they have obviously got a fresh source for all their seafood, I’m from Wellington but live in Auckland now, that pāua is def $13 on todays market sadly inflation has robbed the youth of their fish and chips we used to get 5 potatoe fritters for 10c back in the day after swimming we’d walk home from swimming in the freezing cold and spend our train fare on potatoe fritters as they were more filling than chips. You are doing such a great job sourcing good places and I love you googled picnic table, am going to start doing that too. ❤

Paua is Abalone. It's actually endangered in California (or it was) and really fancy chefs are only allowed to harvest a couple a year. You can get it canned but it's bleached, processed, and often from places where the water quality isn't as good. You got to try the real thing. Also, the mayo you get in NZ is sweeter than US mayo, so if the sweeter mayo was used in making the tarter sauce that would be the reason for the different flavour.

It might just have been the Chinese fish and chip shops I've ordered them from but 99.99 percent of the time you won't get the paua flesh. Usually you get paua gut bag we call the Hua or pear that's been sitting in their freezer longer than they need to be because no one orders them for that reason. A lot of us eat the Hua from the paua but if it's not fresh it's not even worth it.

    Cool video!
The main reason why Pāua is expensive; Is because of supply & demand.
We treat it more of a luxury treat item, much like Bluff oysters.
Many jewelers also use the shells for necklaces or wristband bangles.
However, it is more frequently used by traditional Māori carvers to depict eyes in the faces of sculptures.
I use the shells as a soap-holder for the bathroom basin ;)

As a local to the area, can I give u the bakery and the combo to order from? It’s in Porirua which is the hood of the whole Wellington area, go to the Waitangirua Bakery and order a Filled Roll (Chicken is my preference), Pizza Stick (Warm), Pork and Egg pastry, Steak and Cheese pie. And also get a custard pie and a tray of coconut buns (Panipopo) for the sweet side. All I’m going to say is it’s a 20/10 feed that u will be thanking me later for. Go during the morning preferably

Australia and the UK (fish and chip shops are everywhere). You should try a Banana Fritter with honey and fresh whipped cream. There is a trick when cooking chips. Mild boiling the chips before frying. Add the chips to boiling water for 3 - 5 mins (depends on the thickness of the chips). The outside will be crisp and the inside will be light and fluffy. You can do the same process for Roast Spuds (boil 5 - 7 mins). It takes a little practice but when you nail it you will always have great chips and fantastic Roast Spuds.

There's a couple of places with mega burgers. They come in a large pizza box if you can imagine that and no you can't close the box as the burger is 75mm (3") high (approx). Try a fried banana (coated in breadcrumbs) with real cream and ice cream, it will make any one a fan as a dessert. Thnks from a kiwi for the great review and as for the paua fritter you have to know what your doing or it would be as tough a trying to eat the sole of a work boot 🙂

We have some Abalone fisheries in Australia - mostly in Tasmania but the majority is exported to Asia where they pay a lot for it. It's not really a local thing. Maybe in high end seafood restaurants but never at a local takeaway. $13.50 sounds dirt cheap. I'm tempted to fly over just to try it.

Here in Western Australia we used to just take the abalone from the reefs at local beaches. Then an abalone ‘season’ restriction was introduced and I am not sure that locals are allowed to take them for free at all anymore

Imo there are two types of fish and chip shops in NZ. There are the fancy ones in a great location who cater to the trendy / more affluent and there are the ones in the suburbs who feed the masses on the regular. This second type can be hit and miss but we all know the good one in our locality.
If you are in Auckland, roughly in the Airport vicinity, try Kiwi Takeaways on Puhinui Road in Papatoetoe. They are consistently good for fried foods, but their burgers are just OK. You will get Hoki and chips for well under $10. Snapper is available at a premium but reasonable cost and is excellent.
Do not be afraid to try some foods from other cultures in the less affluent suburbs of Wellington - Porirua for example. Ask around and find some Island food outlets

Great vids btw. Lived in America for 1 year, they only had sweet pies, no mince etc pies. Friend in America couldn't believe NZers had savory pies lol.

Paua here is known as abalone in oz & usa.
Paua fritters are usually pre-frozen & rubbery garbage or just terrible i.e not fresh.
The best chips require the right type of potatoe & usually goes by the name of moon or it might be agira, they're usually for sale in june/july.
Wash them, then slice with a knife to make chips, under no circumstances peel them as this is where the flavour is.
Use a normal saucepan to deepfry in chefade or other fat,do use oil.
You can grate a potatoe to create crisps to add to the pot.
You'll never eat pre-cooked chips ever again. If you try them you'll understand. In reality making your own from actual whole potatoes & not peeling them is just superior. That goes for catching your own snapper & eating it same day.

In Kiwi takeaway shops, the food is cooked to order, when a customer buys it. The ingredients are sourced locally, so potatoes for chips are grown by local NZ farmers. Fish is bought wet, so is super fresh. Buns for burgers are usually bought that day, and salad ingredients are also bought fresh.
