why is this upsetting people? chappell IS drag, she’s over the top she’s playing a character. she’s very inspired by drag already which got her into this conversation in the first place
She is also knowledgeable and respectful of the drag community
They don't even know what this girl's name is.
@@forciaroandha9855lol yes they do you are tripping
Being called a Drag Queen by a Drag Queen is such a compliment. It's not only makeup and hair, its also about being accepted and feeling part of a community. It's such a raw form of self expression.
and personality also!
Absolutely
Lady Gaga is considered drag too so this makes sense to me.
Why?
Over the top outfits camp ect
@@ajax4887 Campy costumes and over the top hair/makeup coupled with adopting an alternate persona to express parts of you that are different or hidden from your everyday life is the core of drag. As an art form, it is traditionally dominated by male presenting people adopting a feminine persona, but the art is not limited by everyday gender expression or identity.
@@christyogle_thedinnerbell this comment is eye opening, thank you.
@@ajax4887 cis women can be drag queens. cis women are drag queens, kings or things. drag isn't just cis men impersonating women!
Drag is for everyone! It is purely entertainment. It’s NOT THAT DEEP
Drag is and has always been “deep”. Seeing drag being detached from art is what makes it so lackluster and sad. She, along with someone of the more popular queens are really reviving the art form!
@@Nikthehermit THANK YOU
Drag is not for everyone.
@@viciousLUA it surely is for everyone, just not able to done by everyone!
@@viciousLUAanyone can do drag therefore it is for everyone! However, I think cis females wanting to do drag you really need to do your research and make sure you know your history!
Can we stop gatekeeping drag? Women are allowed to do drag too. Anyone can be a drag queen/king
i mea sasha colby and sonique literally won drag race
Lol 😂 who is gatekeeping it? U r late to this conversation, even drag Race welcome women now, not only trans women , for example clover bish and Victoria scone are CIS and are amazing. Also in the scene there’s always been women doing drag
@@PuccioMA People in the comments are gatekeeping it lmao. I am well aware that women have always been doing drag, I just felt we were in need of a reminder
@@maveryriley i don’t see anyone doing it babe, u just wanted to sound like a savior , admit it
@@PuccioMA I’m not trying to be a savior. Good lord
I think people don’t understand that drag is about Gender and about Performance and about Self-Transformation and hiding yourself and revealing yourself at the same time but 90% of it is about just having and being FUN. Making people laugh, and then cry, and then laugh. Being a doctor for the audience’s SOUL.
You mean drag is not about gender. It’s about transformation!
Good lord what is up with this comment section. First of all no crayola (the drag queen who opened for her) did not “slander” her by comparing how she performed to drag. Clearly Chappell didn’t feel slandered because if she did she wouldn’t have incorporated drag into her performance style or referred to what she does as a “drag project”. As well as that there is a general vibe here that comparing Chappell Roan to a drag queen is disrespectful or negative in some way. That is some baggage that I don’t have time to unpack today lmao.
lmaooo, fr like Crayola just accepted her into a loving and accepting family, idk how that's shade
as a dancer, this makes so much sense, and i might actually start using this mindset in my own way. thank you, chappell!
Didn't know who this was, the next yt short was her in a fancy red bedazzled corset and gloves explaining how she wanted to be a cheerleader in high school and she wrote Hot to Go, and looking at her, yeah, that's lovely drag!
These comments are insane lmaoo
Literally, everyone’s got their panties in a bunch and just need to chill
@@JTheDivawhat are they saying. I don't wanna look at the bad comments
Yesss!!! Anyone can do drag💖💖💖
Drag is for EVERYONE! Sometimes im a drag King and sometimes I'm a queen depending on what im feeling
He is really listening which is crazy. Rarely do interviewers do that.
Tom is a great interviewer, his is the only show I bother to watch lol
I love that that's what drag is. It's a transformation into a persona
I literally held my breath for like 20 seconds after that bridge. Damn. Amazing.
I love that drag is so popular and almost mainstream. Yes, her whom aesthetic is very campy and over-the-top, like playing a caricature of woman. That's drag. Crayola was being inclusive and paying her a compliment, and she ran with it. I love her for that.
There is an ancient saying „you’re born naked and the rest is drag“

I thought it was intended as a drag name 😅 chaperone
remember, drag is meant for everyone regardless of their gender! you can be beautiful no matter how you identify :)
You are fierce! Thank you for gracing us with your presence!
Its refreshing to see the newer generation still carrying on the tradition
We love Mama Crayola for helping Ms. Queen step into her own
I wish we had more normal looking celebrities like chappell
as a retired drag queen, I support her for understanding how drag works. drag is my way of performing entertainment for ppl, it the same for chappelle
I don’t see why people want to segregate women from being drag? Huh?
women have literally won drag race
Drag is a type of performance and a fashion choice, not a gender identity. Anyone can be a drag Queen.
Great explanation!
a DRAG queen? a drag QUEEN?
i… am the Queen of Drag 💅
I truly don’t get the confusion here, drag is performance art. The make up, hair, and outfits chappell wears IS drag in its most authentic form.
Yes and we love her ❤
She looks like Jinkx's little sister ❤
where can i buy her hat at?
I think it’s on her merch website! I bought a bumper sticker from there that says “Midwest princess”
Her most recent album is called the rise and fall of a Midwest princess and I adore it
Chappell roan isn’t even her real name GIRL YESS YOURE A DRAG QUEEN😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
There's a guy I used to work with ( hairstylist), and I was informed by another co-worker that he also did drag as ME! I was shocked , flattered, and a tad confused because why me I am no one special
Full video??
This is exactly the mindset I had doing dance in high school as a future trans guy trying to figure out his gender. The ultra fem costumes and makeup were bearable because I mentally separated myself from my dance "persona." The only times I've felt comfortable as a girl were in some sort of costume.
❤❤❤❤❤
I did drag in high school for a Pricilla queen of the desert performance I absolutely enjoyed it I was a young girl at the time and thought nothing of it dressing up is fun and creative for girls and boys why not enjoy life
That was beautiful. Shes an attractive human and artist when stripped of her persona and gender.
I want her hat so bad and I’m born in LA 😂
Let’s go kraken week!
explained perfectly
I love that hat.
You can get it on her website
Yep. "Bio Queen" some ppl say and there's other terms but, it's the art form and transforming into a character. You dint have to gender bend to do drag.
people dont say that anymore
Not bio queen.
It’s just Drag please stop
You can tell the difference between her performing and her during this interview, it’s definitely a persona/drag queen difference and I think that’s it’s amazing she makes that distinction
y'all don't have an issue with trans women doing drag but suddenly it's a problem when a cis woman does it? how are you even to know which drag queens are "valid" or not based on that & just by looking at them? it's so impractical. just spread love idc
just shows that theyre not just misogynistic but also dont see trans women as women
Metronome is CHOAS lol
Drag is how I define wearing normal makeup lol I'm adam sandler in disguise.
not the man thinking it was an insult
Her pupils are huge omg
Why does the guy look offended after hearing the word drag queen
@@rob-dq7sv straight probably
He’s just trying to get a clear understanding. People are still uneducated about drag and haven’t realized her persona is drag inspired. The guy is a pretty thoughtful interviewer.
Oh chappell isn’t her real name 😂 I feel like such an idiot😂
I think theres a shift from camp to drag that a lot of femme creators think we're not made for or they think its overly performative-- but it has to be, to keep the human seperate from the art. Because to be in drag is to be art first and a human last. Its a safety net. She can go home and actually be Kaitlyn, away from her persona.
If this doesn’t make sense to u then maybe this will LADY GAGA!! She found her Gaga she is dressing like how Gaga would very drag queen inspired
Anyone can drag
Not everyone can slay
We’re all born naked…
you don’t need to be a dude to do drag guys 😭
Reminds me of when my trans fiancé said “oh I know you’re a drag queen.” This also flashed a giant light bulb in my mind
The fact that people are now proud of being from the Midwest is wild 😂😂😂😂😂😂
The dude don’t understand if that was a compliment or an insult
Rupaul might have some bad takes, but "we're all born naked & the rest is drag" is absolutely correct.

Let's hope she only talks to friendly people the rest of her life
Did you watch the video though? She said this was VERY impactful in a positive way.
Him asking her that was annoying
I guess. Idk. She just seems like a singer to me. She's like if Cyndi Lauper and Nina Hagen had a baby. I think calling her a drag queen is taking away from real drag queens. Like, what's the metric? All singers wear costumes and makeup.
because she’s performing an over the top femme character, drag is about over exaggerated femininity - which she does?
@juzahyodo not necessarily. I work in drag clubs. Only some drag queens do "over the top femininity", and like I already asked.....what's the metric? Who decides what is "over the top"?
drag is putting on an exaggerated persona (and putting on a performance), anyone can be a drag queen, that includes cis women, trans women, cis men, and trans men. same with drag kings, anyone of any gender can be a drag king. drag is literally one of the most inclusive communities out there, and lots of performers most people don't consider drag actually are! like Lady Gaga for example
Why is it not just putting on a persona or getting into character via costume and makeup. Not all costuming is drag
Cause honestly who cares that much, drag is easily comparable to what she does so why not?
Why is he wearing a lab coat
Who tf is this

@@popcornj.chicken7944 yeah I have, but how is that drag. Drag is gender swapping
thank you for being an intelligent person and realizing that many people put on makeup and act as a different person a lot and are not labeled a drag queen.
drag is a style, an art
People can call it whatever they want, but how is this not just Glam?! It so literally fits Glam that it’s like calling a rock band a really slow version of punk…
Glam literally influenced drag culture, New Romantics, rocky horror etc…and unlike Drag where it intentionally plays on having one sex portray a super exaggerated stereotypical version of the opposite sex; Glam can use all different elements and is not limited to one or the other. Like drag would be a sub genre of Glam that specifically uses gender and sex as one of the main properties, but Glam can have a way broader spectrum that is why more about a super over the top stylized version of yourself.
I feel like instead of constantly trying to redefine every single movement to be inclusive to literally everyone, is literally watering down every little bit of nuanced culture that a niche group of people have as their own thing, and making it into this aggressively hyper inclusive commercialized monster of ambiguities.
God forbid we leave out the rich cis white women from a niche counter culture…cause what else would they use to sell their music?!
You do realize that drag is older than glam?
@@ts5284 Yes, but new trends have impacts and changes on older trends all the time. And in particular, though the “Drag scene” really got started in the early 20th century, the term “Drag Queen” didn’t pop up til around 1950, and while Glam or Glam rock didn’t pop up til 1960. So yes, any way you look at it, Drag and even the idea of being a drag queen is older…however, Drag Culture when thru huge changes in the 70’s-80’s as pop culture and tv really started playing off each other as well.
The other reason I say she should use Glam, as she is a musician, and that’s what we’ve typically called musicians who also put on a hyper exaggerated or hyper specialized character into their performance.
Also, this idea that drag has nothing to do with one’s biological sex, and that anyone can be a drag queen or a drag king, is absolutely a very recent thing. I mean, hell, lady Gaga almost got cancelled for claiming to be a drag queen or for appropriating Drag culture back in the early 2010’s. And there’s a huge divide from among the average person, and then the small minority of young Twitter people who believe that biological sex is irrelevant to any identity, and that anyone can be any one of infinite genders as it is a fluid spectrum. Whereas, you ask the average person(if they even are familiar with drag), they’ll tell you it’s men dressing as women or women dressing as men and performing on stage. Thats not a spicy take whatsoever.
You're thinking too deep about it dude, I'm not reading all that, i got a job 😅
anyone of any gender can be a drag queen, same goes for drag kings. sure, drag is in part about exaggerating and playing with gender, but it isn't exclusively about dressing as the "opposite gender". cis women can be drag queens.
How do u bor realize that if ur on stage thats your persona and.. but when u gi back to the green room.. who are you... Dont let a drag queen slander you lol
You don’t get it
Lol you really have no idea do you.
I have an aneurism every time I try to read this. Go back to school.

She’s not 😂😂😂 -- she’s a female putting on female clothes lol -- nothing radical about it.
This is a dumb way to define drag lmao
I don’t know any women who dress full glam and put on an exaggerated character on the regular
How trendy...
Drag to me is the same amount of cringe as Furries.
Sorry to break it to you, everyone thinks you're cringe 😢😢😢🥺🥺🥺
k. no one asked nor do we care
Now everyone wants to call themselves drag queens, some time back when it wasn't popular and MEN were being discriminated against, bullied, and actually feared for their lives for being Drag queens, it was a different story. it is so easy to just take something when other people worked so hard to build it.
Cis and trans women have been a part of drag for a very long time. I think you need to read up on your drag history before making such a claim.
Dude do you think women secrete foundation and blush and lipstick and eyeshadow naturally from their pores? Do you not understand that literally everything we wear is a performance?

Babes do you think drag is the same as being trans? Like; yeah. We know. Gigi Zahir isn't a woman. The point is that Crayola is a character - Crayola uses "she" pronouns because she's a woman character.
