The shoulder strap was the official way to carry the infantry cartridge box. But a lot of Skirmishers do use the belt alone. My own rig uses a shoulder strap…with a cap pouch on the strap.
Perhaps in the union army but some Confederate cartridge boxes were made only for a waist belt and others for shoulder sling only. Yes, the English cap boxes sent over with the Enfield rifles were made to go on the cartridge box sling. Great info!
