  • Centipede is a different beast when it comes to winterizing your lawn. Here I review the importance of Potassium (K) leading into fall/winter and also discuss how to guard against centipede decline.
    Potassium products:
Dissolvable Sulfate of Potash (SOP): amzn.to/3BiB2Sj
    Simple Lawn Solutions 0-0-25: amzn.to/3FMzZgK
Herbicides (weed killers) safe for Centipede, highly recommended:
    Change Up: amzn.to/4e4rMVG
    Celsius herbicide: amzn.to/2SPy9ba
    Isoxaben herbicide pre-emergent: shrsl.com/31gjj
Fertilome Weed Free Zone (great post-emergent): shrsl.com/31gjk
    Southern AG Atrazine: amzn.to/3o2AnBe
DIY Pest Control (What the Pros Use) for Indoor/Outdoor:
    Talstar P: shrsl.com/3nfok
Fertilizers I recommend for Centipede grass:
Fertilome Centipede Lawn Fert 15-0-15 (w/ 3% iron and other micronutrients): shrsl.com/32lqj
Anugreen 16-0-2 (w/ 2% iron and 16% organic matter for soil health): shrsl.com/32lqq
    Simple Lawn Solutions hose-end 15-0-15: amzn.to/2U73h6D
Potassium boost -- Simple Lawn Solutions 0-0-25: amzn.to/3FMzZgK
Liquid dethatch products I recommend that would help alleviate the issue:
    LawnStar Dethatcher: amzn.to/3B0ued2
    Nature's Lawn Biological Dethatcher: amzn.to/3r5QTjv
    PetraTools Liquid Dethatcher: amzn.to/36zdw6o

Great explanations, potassium will also strengthen the roots of any type of grass. If you are burning wood, use the ashes for potassium

Best way I’ve found to winterize it is to cut it super short and keep debris off of it like leaves and and stuff I live down south in Louisiana so we can do winter rye and it really helps break up the soil for the centipede

A lot of the pre-emergents also have a good bit of K from some form of potash.

Hey, just a thought, but you should review the Subvert products on centipede grass and show results compared to something like the next liquid lawn plan. There's a lot of missing content on spraying fertilizer on centipede grass with results.

So should someone cut centipede grass shorter? I was told to let it grow taller in the fall and leave it a little taller throughout the winter. 🤷‍♂️. Just subbed and can’t wait to learn more about centipede. I have used a service this year. They did keep it fed, but didn’t stop any weeds at all. So this may be my new favorite channel to watch

Thank you! You can leave it a bit longer if you want but nothing crazy. I wouldn’t go over 2.5”. Im keeping mine at about 2” going into dormancy.

Sop or Mop for Centipede....I have heard conflicting sites and recommendations. Columbia, Sc...been watching you for a few years....great advice and keep it up!

SOP for sure. MOP has more chlorides and salt which is not good year after year on the centipede. Thanks for watching!

Just subbed. This is my first time taking care of centipede sod here in Charleston, SC. I did one application of 15-0-15 the end of July and the lawn looks decent compared to my neighbors. What can I buy to put down for fall and when exactly should I put it down? The temps are starting to cool off here, mid 60’s in the morning, mid 70’s in the afternoon. Thanks in advance!

The only things you may want to do now are building soil with carbon (granular Humic acid for example) and a Potassium feeding. You could do a fall pre-emerg app as well but be careful w pre-emergents on centipede

@@CentipedeCentralLawnCare thank you. What do I buy that’s a granular humic acid and potassium feeding?

What are the pros and cons for using some general purpose topsoil to fill in bare spots in centipede? The yard is virtually 100% sand here in coastal South Carolina. I'm thinking the topsoil will provide an organic component. I've not used any fertilizer products. Your videos are extremely informative! I'm totally new to centipede lawn care. My experience has been primarily fescue/Kentucky bluegrass.
    Thanks.

You are right, adding in good quality top soil or bagged compost would add some much needed organic matter. It’s probably something you want to do every year since you have so much sand. Just be sure the top soil you get is not full of wood chips. Thanks for watching!

I put down potassium in October as well after a soil test showed I'm low. How often do you think is ok to use it? It has been a mostly warm winter so far in Savannah, GA, but cold returns next week.

If you use a liquid you could apply monthly during the growing season. A granular potassium would add more so you wouldn’t have to use as often.

Great info thanks. I already achieved the nitrogen under 2 lbs. for the year so for my next step I will use SOP in October like you recommend. i found this one it's a 0 0 48. Don't know if 48 is too high. I have 14k sq ft of Centipede grass. I will link the product. yardmastery.com/products/yard-mastery-0-0-48-sop?_pos=1&_sid=40a938c97&_ss=r. what do you think?

Sure that will be good. Just follow label. That will be a good feeding to strengthen the grass heading into fall
