    It's 2024 and this advice remains relevant! Thank you, Markus! I would never have attempted using an AD200 in the mid-day (Florida) sun. Adding that small 4.5" reflector made all the difference...even at less than full power.

    Love, love, love the AD200s. Have 18 for what we do and the following rig set up for each. We use the Flashpoint Bowens head (Flashpoint eVOLV Dual Power Twin Head with Bowens Mount AD-B2) that can also use just one bulb and one AD200 (versus two & two). Single bulb goes to the center prong set. We never take the single bulb out of the head, just dismount the single AD200, collapse the Glow Foldable Beauty Dish With Bowens Mount (Silver, 40"), slip on the covers, done. Very light, very portable, very powerful for our needs. Fantastic light fill, make inverse law adjustments as needed, go for it. Kick them all with Flashpoint R2 Pro MarkII 2.4GHz Transmitter for Fujifilm (your flavor may vary). Great review of this underestimated little light, keep up the great work.

    I often use a bracket to mount to AD200s so I can put them inside a 45" reflective umbrella. Works great for me on the go because it folds down like a briefcase without completely breaking it down

    Love my AD200s, and the AD-B2. The entirety of my lighting kit is 2x AD200, 1 AD-B2, and the extension heads, 2x of the Zoom II r2 (AA type), a V350, and the R2 trigger. I've never run into a situation where I needed more. Being able to split the smaller units up, mount them anywhere, and not need super heavy equipment has been awesome. Without a studio to work from, the portability has been key.

    My favourite thing about AD200’s and 600’s? No cables to trip over and super easy to set up and control with the X-Pro controller. I use the AD200 with bare bulb in Octoboxes and I love them for indoor shoots.
    I have ordered one of the AD-S2’s to try it out on one of my AD200’s at the next event I shoot. Bought one of the Fosoto light stands as well so going to try that as well for mounting the AD200.
    Thanks for taking the time to make these videos 👍👍💯😊

    Love the 200's. Best BANG for the buck! So many photographers fall into the the "Bigger is better" theory, when that's not always the case. The word for the 200's is "versatility."
    The power main difference between the 200/600 is two stops of light. If youre shooting wide open, you can just adjust the ISO to compensate of just move the flash closer to the subject...

    • @pointeroverflow
      @pointeroverflow Рік тому

      Thats not the way stops work. The power difference between a AD200 and AD600 would be 1.5 stops. The power difference between a AD200 and a AD1600 is 3 stops, not 8 stops. It is a sad state of affairs when this ended up as the top comment and everyone else who viewed or up voted it is dumb enough to not know how stops work either. Also the point of using strobes is so you dont have to shoot wide open.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 3 місяці тому

      @@pointeroverflow The point of using a strobe is to control the light. Not shooting wide open is not the explicit purpose of strobes.

    I wish I would've found Marcus a lot earlier. People always think bigger is better. As a solo, amateur street photographer, I recently started to take portraits and thought I needed all this stuff to haul around. I've been holding off on doing the HSS thing and came across this series of videos and tried both HSS and using an ND filter without HSS. I think it may have been the quality of the ND filter or my lack of experience, but the HSS photos came out a little sharper. I have one AD200 with the Fresnel head, so I gave it a shot. The little ad200 was powerful enough without any modifiers and still had a little room to go. I have a little 4-5-inch reflector that came with my AD200 as a package. I'm gonna go out next weekend and give it a shot with the bulb.

    Great video as always Markus!! There's one thing I LOVE about the AD200 that the new units don´t have: spare head included the box in case of accident without paying extra! Not only the Ad200 gives you the option of barebulb/mini fresnel but one head serves as an spare in case something happens with the other, I carry an extra barebulb in my back pack so I have triple redundancy! Something the AD100 and AD300 don't have.

  • @paristo

    Totally have missed this channel for some odd reason, and must just love the real enthusiasm about the content with great amount of sense and "foots on the ground".
    One reason although why I don't like the HSS modes, is that it can be seen as scanlines in some of the gradients, like in example the "greycard" on left of the head.

    Individual AD200s can be used with MANY softboxes and beauty dishes quite easily with the S1 or S2 flash brackets (and even though it's one extra thing to carry, it doesn't take up that much space. I do it all the time. Just did it on a beach shoot and a wedding. I love my AD200 Pro. I think I'm going to get a couple more. I also love my AD600BM (old model. Like you I have no interest in the 600Pros)I like these lighting vids, though. Keep 'em coming.

      In the shade or sunset or cloudy days or indoors, yes AD200 softboxes are fine. But I shoot in full bright sunlight and need to overpower the sun and darken the sky and shoot at f1.8. A couple 200's can do that if I use the reflectors, but not with softbox

    I can use the AD200's in soft boxes because there is a third party bowens mount holder for the AD200. It was made for speedlights but since the wide of the AD200 is similar to a speedlight it fits perfect. I love the modifers you are using on the AD200 I got some for mine and its very nice. I also got that reflector you had in your video with the odd pattern inside to help increase a stop of light. Works perfect.

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  2 роки тому +3

      I've made numerous videos about AD200 modifiers including the S-bracket you mentioned. My comment in this video was not that modifiers cannot be used, just that the AD200 was not designed for modifiers like the Ad300, 400 or 600.

    Thank you. First time watcher. There was a lot of practical advice which as a newer photographer really helps. When budgets are tight, it’s hard to figure out where to spend money most wisely. I’ve always liked the Ad200s. I do some product photography and everything else I shoot is generally indoors. Seems like those 200s would be perfect. My only thing is I bought 3 older Nikon SB950 speed lights which actually do amazing and if I don’t get the 200s, then I’ll buy the Godox remote trigger system for them.
    Sorry for the long comment but i really like your channel. I’m subscribing. Peace.

    I recently had a gig and used my ad200. I would say maybe 2 hour of shooting it started to not flash. The battery wasn’t dying it was fully charged. I turned it on and off as well as the transmitter. It would flash a few and start acting up again. I had it powered at 8. I was thinking it started slowing the recycling time. That’s something that I can’t have going on. My help on this issue or maybe you experienced this. Can you share anything on this. Thank you for your time.

    One mod I've seen people do is to get the frosted half-dome diffuser for the bare-bulb and remove the dome so you're just left with the back (the reflector plate) and you can use that to push more light forward). Even using the dome diffuser with the barebulb produces quite a bit of light (I'd say at leaest as much if not more than using the round head or Fresnel head with a standard reflector mounted in a Bowen's mount. And the bare-bulb dome diffuser is cheap like under $10 each (i bought two of them -- modded one and remove the dome, and kept the other one with the dome attached -- and I have a spare dome in case the one breaks). Some tests suggest that you can get 1/2 to almost a full stop of power doing this (with the diffuser dome removed and only using the reflector plate).

    I shoot 4 x 5 which sucks up light for indoor portraits. Fast apertures starts at f5.6 or more ! You need at least 500ws. What do you recommend? (BTW leaf lenses can sync at any speed but you know that.) The challenge is I don't need all the fancy Godox/strobe/speedlight features because I am taking a simple snap, metered slowly with a Sekonic meter. I can get something used for way less. The question is: what should I get? A used Bowens? Great video, yet again!

    I use my AD200 Pro's inside 42" umbrella softboxes (super cheap Neewer), using the bare bulb (one in each). This way the weight is in the middle, and if it falls over then the flash itself doesn't hit anything, as it's encased in an umbrella protective shell. Using an X-Pro transmitter means I never have to go in and touch the flash itself, as I can control it from the transmitter, and the only time I have to touch the flash is to wake it up if it's been idle too long. I also have 2 TT685S's and a v860ii, plus a bunch of other flashes, and I am looking forward to replacing them with AD200 Pro's soon!

    Hi Marcus, thanks for the tips! I always come back to these videos for advice. Curious why you would use the AD600 while traveling instead of an AD200 or two? I have 3 AD200 pros and considering another to go with my AD-B2. Thanks.

      For fun trips I take the 100s or 200s, but when going to once in a lifetime places around the world like Bora Bora, I take some 600s because I never know what I'll be dealing with. I also take 600s sometimes when I take road trips because size and weight doesn't matter and if I'm shooting in Death valley in the middle of the day where the sun is blindingly bright and Im in wide open desert with a wide angle lens and want lights out of the shot...

    Instead of 2 ad200s. Can 1 Ad200 with a speedlight achieve the same result ? Since Ad200 is doing hss anyway and the speedlight just lighting the object more... as I have just one ad200 and 2 speedlights

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  2 роки тому

      You can make anything work if you want, but remember AD200s are three times more powerful than any speedlight. Just stop eating and fast for a week and use the money to get another AD200 and you'll be healthier to boot.

    Hi Marcus, love your straight forward ,'tell as you see it's videos. l wonder if Godox isn't just using different color biased tubes on their newer kit AD100/300 vs older 360/AD200? If so does it mean we eventually need to adapt? I too love my AD200s and use 3 regularly instead of a larger battery pack twin head strobe.

    I love my AD200pro's, but I purchased the new Nikon z8 and I get serious horizontal banding with I shoot in HSS. ALL firmware is Current and Up -to-date. I'm at a loss. I'm shoot changing from rear curtain and front curtain and STILL I find banding when I shoot past 1/250 shutter speed. I've tried I tried to leave a comment on your other UA-cam page, but comments were not available. So I hope you see this one. I have reached out to several UA-camrs and they all feel its the ad200pros. I have tried changing the Photo Flicker Reduction in Z8 settings and the High-Frequency Flicker Reduction. Nothing changes. I hope someone reads this and has some good advice for me. Cheers! Leanna

    Hi Marcus
    Is the AD 200 just a flash or does it stay on?
    When you recorded Carra food day with the panasonic camcorder and your small light, could you have used the Ad200 as your light or is it just a flash.?
    Learning loads from you, thanks

    Honestly when I use the ad-b2 with the reflector vs the ad200 with the the small reflector I noticed the light being so much more harsher especially on darker skin tones. Ad-b2 just always been easier for me.
    Funny thing is while the video was going I was just about to ask you to compare the two and then that part of the video came up just in time lol.
    But yeah I love the AD200s am able to use them with almost anything. One even work good in a 60in umbrella. So I was able to put one in the umbrella and one in a beauty to get a punchy look. And that was enough for a inside studio shoot. All I needed is 400w split up the right way. What I might try tho is the small reflector on one ad200 inside a 60” umbrella 🤔

  • @RichardServello

    So what about putting that reflector on it then putting that in a soft box?

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  Місяць тому

      Reflectors concentrate light into a beam which you don't want in a softbox- you want the light to go in all directions, hence bare bulb being best

    I love options, so..
    I have 2x AD200's 1X AD360 1X AD600
    2x V860III 1x V1
    plus I have an ADB2 & 2-3 of those 4.5in dishes
    So I'm probably going to grab the bracket just so I have more options when using my lights.
    I can have various different set ups as is.. I may add one more AD600 to my kit so if needed I could have 2 600ws lights.
    And Note you can get the adapter to turn 2 AD600's into 1 1200ws light.

    As a user of differently branded AD200, I love the details and information - will be there something about barn doors with color gels, that can be attached to A type head? Or C type head with constant light? Or a grid, that could be attached to this small reflector? I have found these and I wonder, how much use these addons would be. I've considered getting one of these bigger lights in the future, but with how much apparently can be squeezed out of these, I would pretty much prefer the portability, as I just carry everything.
